Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary,
The last few popes have lamented the declining church attendance in Europe. When Pope
Benedict XVI visited the USA a few years ago, he was pleasantly shocked to see the numbers of enthusiastic faithful welcoming him. Certainly, although it is a problem in some parishes, here church attendance is not.
Although we have a parking lot the size of Arizona,
at times, it is still not big enough. We here at St.
Margaret Mary’s are incredibly blessed to celebrate
eight Sunday Masses (including the Saturday 5:00
PM vigil Mass). And with few exceptions, almost
all of them are pleasantly packed. Why is that?
Well, my experience as a newcomer is that our parish is a very welcoming place. It’s a faith-filled
place, with generous and service-minded people.
It’s not perfect by any means, but there is the sense
that every member feels included and a part of the
mission. Many visitors have commented on this,
usually saying that they felt “something special”
here.

Perhaps you’ve experienced this in you own life,
times when you’ve been less than faithful in regularly
attending Sunday Mass, thinking perhaps that it’s no
big deal. During my college years I myself only attended Mass when I went home to visit my mom.
The main objective of the evil one is to get us to miss
Mass. Why? Because in missing Mass we disobey
God’s third commandment to honor the Sabbath,
which for us Christians is the day of the Resurrection,
Sunday. Moreover, without the two legitimate excuses of illness or travel, we have consciously and
gravely sinned, risking the loss of grace. Practically,
that means we are defenseless against the temptations
surrounding us in our modern immoral society.
Knowing this, the enemy of our souls seeks to make
missing Mass a habit until the downward cycle leads
to doubts about the faith and even to abandoning
God. So, it is God’s will that we attend Mass every
Sunday for our own good. Our loving Father wants
only to help and protect his children. The God who
loves us needs nothing from us but does desire our
love in return. The celebration of the Holy Eucharist
is the greatest expression of love. And so, we joyfully
attend Love’s Banquet every Sunday.
That “something special”, of course, is the presence
of the Lord. He is present in the sacred space, in the
tabernacle, in the Eucharist, in His powerful Word,
and through the Holy Spirit in the assembly. This is
why we attend Sunday Mass. Because our God is
with us. He is our Joy. We need Him because without Joy we die. We don’t come to be entertained—
we come to be filled with God. After an exhausting
week, struggling through the secular jungle, we
seek the Peace of the Divine Presence. This is why
the Church teaches that Sunday Mass is not an option but an obligation—because the world wears us With prayers and friendship in the Risen Lord,

Estimados Amigos y Familias de Santa Margarita María,
Los últimos Papas han lamentado la baja asistencia a la iglesia en Europa. Cuando el Papa
Benedicto XVI visitó los EE.UU. hace unos años, fue gratamente sorprendido al ver el número de
entusiastas fieles dándole la bienvenida. Ciertamente, a pesar de que es un problema en algunas
parroquias, aquí no lo es.
A
unque tenemos un estacionamiento del
tamaño de Arizona, a veces, todavía no es
lo suficientemente grande. Estamos aquí, en
Santa Margarita María increíblemente bendecidos para celebrar ocho misas dominicales
(incluyendo el Sábado 5:00 misa de vigilia). Y
con pocas excepciones, casi todas
están
gratamente llenas. ¿Por qué? Bueno, mi
experiencia como un recién llegado es que
nuestra parroquia es un lugar muy acogedor. Es
un lugar lleno de fe, con gente generosa y con
vocación de servicio. No es perfecto, por cualquier medio, pero no es el sentido de que todos
los miembros se sientan incluidos y una parte
de la misión. Muchos visitantes han comentado
sobre esto, por lo general diciendo que se
sienten "algo especial" aquí.
E
se "algo especial”, por supuesto, es la presencia del Señor. Él está presente en el espacio sagrado, en el tabernáculo, en la Eucaristía, en su Palabra poderosa, y por obra del
Espíritu Santo en la asamblea. Es por esto que
atendemos misa dominical Porque nuestro Dios
está con nosotros. Él es nuestra alegría. Lo necesitamos porque sin la alegría de morir. No venimos a ser entretenidos - llegamos a estar llenos de Dios. Después de una semana agotadora,
luchando por la selva secular, buscamos la paz
de la Presencia Divina. Es por esto que la Iglesia
enseña que la misa dominical no es una opción
sino una obligación - porque el mundo nos
desgasta y sin ser alimentados espiritualmente nuestros semanales espíritus volubles desvanecen en lugar de florecer.

al vez usted ha experimentado esto en su
vida propia, momentos en los que has sido fiel en menos de asistir regularmente a la
misa dominical, pensando tal vez que no es
gran cosa. Durante mis años de universidad
yo sólo asistí a misa cuando me fui a casa a visitar a mi mamá. El principal objetivo del maligno es conseguir que perdamos la Misa, ¿por
qué? Porque faltando a Misa desobedecemos
el tercer mandamiento de Dios para honrar el
día de reposo, lo que para nosotros los cristianos es el día de Domingo de Resurrección. Por
otra parte, sin las dos excusas legítimas de
enfermedad o un viaje, hemos consciente y
pecado gravemente, arriesgando la pérdida de
la gracia. En la práctica, eso significa que
estamos indefensos ante las tentaciones que
nos rodean en nuestra sociedad inmoral
moderna. Sabiendo esto, el enemigo de nuestras almas busca hacer falta misa en un hábito
hasta que el ciclo descendente conduce a
dudas acerca de la fe e incluso a abandonar a
Dios. Por lo tanto, es la voluntad de Dios que
nosotros asistimos a misa todos los domingos
por nuestro propio bien. Nuestro amoroso
Padre quiere sólo ayudar y proteger a sus
hijos. El Dios que nos ama no necesita nada de
nosotros, pero no desean nuestro amor a
cambio. La celebración de la Santa Eucaristía
es la máxima expresión del amor. Y así, con
alegría Atendemos banquetes de amor todos
los domingos.

We typically take breathing for granted. It’s a physical
process that we must do to live, and we do it without
even thinking about it. It must have been much different
for the disciples when Jesus breathed on them and said,
“Receive the Holy Spirit”. It’s doubtful that they took
the experience of breathing in the Holy Spirit for
granted!
Each of us, through our baptism and faith, has been
filled with the Holy Spirit. Each of us has received gifts
to serve others on behalf of our Lord.

LA ASCENSION DEL SEÑOR

Jesús sube al cielo, pero sigue presente en su iglesia. El evangelio de San Mateo termina narrando la
última de las apariciones de Jesús. La forma como
Jesús les habla a sus discípulos indica que el tiempo
de su presencia visible en este mundo ha terminado.
Es una escena donde se reúnen todos los elementos
de las apariciones del Resucitado. Jesús ha fijado
un encuentro con sus apóstoles. El es quien toma la
iniciativa de manifestarse: al ver a Jesús, se postraron. San Mateo sitúa esta última aparición en Galilea, sobre el monte. Son dos indicaciones que tienen más un valor teológico que topográfico. Galilea
fue donde inicio el ministerio de Jesús. Además,
está región se encuentra en los confines del mundo
pagano: se le llamaba “Galilea de los paganos”. La
despedida del Señor desde este lugar sitúa la misión
universal de los apóstoles y de la iglesia en continuidad con la obra de Jesús. Lo mismo podemos
decir del Monte, otro lugar teológico en el evangelio de Mateo. Es sobre la Montaña que Jesús ha
proclamado las Bienaventuranzas, la carta magna
del Reino.
La Ascensión del Señor.
Hoy celebramos la Ascensión del Señor. Una fiesta
simpática porque comenzó con un día de campo, en
un cerro donde Jesús había citado a los discípulos.
Debió de ser muy hermoso porque el Maestro le
gustaba mucho el campo y a Pedro le encantaba,
sobre todo si Jesús manifestaba su gloria. Por eso
los ángeles tuvieron que volverlo en sí, lo mismo
que tuvo que hacer Jesús en el Tabor, pues se encontraba bien y quería seguir allí. Claro que Pedro
no era, ni es, el único; lo que pasa es que era muy
sincero y lo manifestaba todo, pues el libro de los
Hechos de los apóstoles dice que todos quedaron
“mirando fijos al cielo” Naturalmente que nos le
faltaba razón para ello, pues con el hecho de la Ascensión, terminaba una etapa de la historia salvadora de Jesús para dar comienzo a otra que iba a ser
más dura para ellos, y a nadie le gustan las cosa
difíciles. Jesús había dicho anteriormente: “¿Es
bueno acaso que los compañeros del novio anden
tristes cuando el novio está con ellos? Vendrán días
en que el novio les será quitado; entonces ayunarán”.
Lo grandioso del caso es que Jesús se nos ha ido,
pero, a la vez, no se nos ha ido. “Entonces en presencia de ellos, Jesús fue levantado y una nube lo
ocultó”, así hemos leído en la primera lectura, pero
el evangelio nos ha dicho: “Yo estoy con ustedes
todos los días hasta que se termine el mundo”. Es
decir, lo que ha cambiado es la manera de estar con
nosotros: antes estaba como novio; ahora está como
esposo formando un solo cuerpo con la iglesia, de
la que es cabeza suprema, como hemos leído en la
segunda lectura. Esta forma de estar con nosotros es
hasta más perfecta que la primera, como el matrimonio es más perfecto que le noviazgo, aunque
haya momentos en los que parezca que no.
Otro punto muy importante de las lecturas de hoy
es que Jesús no sólo no nos deja huérfanos, sino
que nos da el Espíritu Santo. “Ustedes serán bautizados en el soplo del Espíritu Santo”, “recibirán la
fuerza del Espíritu Santo, que vendrá sobre ustedes,
y serán mis testigos en Jerusalén, en to Judea y Samaria, y hasta los límites de la tierra”; son palabras
de la primera lectura y se trata del Espíritu de Sabiduría que ilumina nuestra mirada interior y que nos
lo da Dios para que podamos comprender, para que
veamos lo que esperamos a raíz del llamado de
Dios, para que entendamos la herencia grande y
gloriosa que Dios reserva a sus santos y para que
comprendamos con que extraordinaria fuerza actúa
en favor de nosotros, los creyentes, usando toda la
eficacia de su poder, como hemos leído en la carta a
los Efesios.
Reflexión
No olvidemos el contenido central del Ascensión: que tenemos que dar testimonio de Cristo
en la familia, en el trabajo, en la comunidad y
en todas partes, porque somos miembros del
Cuerpo de Cristo, porque para eso se nos ha
dado el Espíritu Santo.

Recuerden que es un requisito de la Arquidiócesis
de tener dos años consecutivos de educación religiosa con el fin de recibir los sacramentos.
Los formularios y cuotas de inscripción completas
deben ser entregadas a la oficina RE. Una copia del
certificado de bautismo debe acompañar a todos los
registros nuevos. Incluso si un niño fue bautizado
en Santa Margarita María Alacoque Parish, una copia de cada certificado necesario (s) se debe incluir
a todos los niños que se están registrando para la
Formación de Fe para la primera vez.

FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION
Registration for the 2014-15 Faith Formation Classes is now open..
Registration forms for elementary, junior high and
high school confirmation can be picked up at the RE or Parish Offices
or downloaded from the
parish website.
Current and New students need to register.
Remember, it is an Archdiocesan requirement to have two consecutive years of religious education in order to receive sacraments.
Completed registration forms and fees must be hand delivered to the
RE office. A copy of the Baptismal Certificate must accompany all
NEW registrations. Even if a child was baptized at St. Margaret Mary
Alacoque Parish, a copy of each necessary certificate(s) must be included for all children who are registering for Faith Formation for the
very first time.
PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN
A healthy scrutiny of programs for kids helps create a
healthy environment
It is not a best practice for a parent, guardian, employer,
or manager to blindly trust everyone who works with children. Yet,
paranoia of those who work with children is also not a best practice. There is a healthy balance. By regularly and frequently questioning the actions and motives of those who work with children,
parents and other adults can audit the programs their children participate in and help keep caregivers accountable for their work. In
this process, parents and other adults can create a constant fear of
being caught in the mind of a perpetrator. By channeling this kind
of healthy scrutiny and suspicion into accountability, adults can
create an environment where children are protected, quality care is
emulated, and abuse is not tolerated.
