This Saturday marks one of my favorite national holidays
This Saturday marks one of my favorite national holidays, Independence Day, or as my children know it, “The 4th of July.” In the
midst of all the joyous celebrations, hot dogs, fireworks, picnics and patriotic displays, I hope we make time to remember our
heritage as a nation. Our forefathers envisioned a nation of freedom, where all men and women are created equal by the hand
of God. It is still a shining story, unequalled among all the nations of the earth, and worth remembering.
This coming Sunday’s message in my Overhauling: Bible Lessons from Classic Cars series is “Getting Ready for Show” from Joshua 6:1-7, where the Israelites prayed, prepared and paraded around Jericho in obedience to the Lord. Most of us know the story not so much from the Bible but from the old spiritual, “Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho.”
I’ll be talking about all the careful preparation that goes into getting a classic car ready for a car show, how we can each spiritually prepare for obedience to God, and all the parades and patriotic celebrations of Independence Day Weekend. I’ll be praying
for God’s calling for us as a nation, where the walls of division come crashing down, and we move forward to a brighter future.
In the rest of July, all the pastors on our staff will be sharing about why they are passionate about their area of ministry in a series we are calling, “Why I Love My Job.” Check with the Church office for the pastor on call for your pastoral care needs as our
pastors and staff will be trying to work in a summer vacation.
And don’t forget August 16th – Back to School Sunday - one 9am outdoor service at 9am. (Under a big tent!) Don’t miss the fun
this summer!
And I will see you this Sunday at Old Mission! Happy Independence Day!

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS NEWS
All of our adult Sunday School classes welcome
visitors and new members. All classes begin at 9:35
am unless otherwise specified.
Give Ye Them To Eat (GYTTE – pronounced JIT-ee) is
a health promotion and economic development program serving people who live in the villages of South
Central Mexico. As a congregation, we have a Covenant Relationship with the United Methodist missionaries at GYTTE. This means that our Missions
Committee sends financial support for GYTTE missionaries each year. Would you like to see the wonderful work GYTTE is doing at their “Tree of Life”
health training center first hand? There is still room
for you to join the Old Mission UMC team going to
Mexico January 8-17, 2016! We currently have a
team of 12, and we would like to take 15 people on
this amazing journey. Many of us have participated
in past GYTTE trips and are looking forward to going
again. First time missioners are especially encouraged to join us! Most of the work we will do for GYTTE at their health training center will involve construction and maintenance of the buildings and
grounds. We will also be participating in worship
and fellowship with a Methodist congregation in the
nearby village of Tlancualpican. Our time in Mexico
will be divided between volunteering, learning, and
growing in faith. Built into the schedule are visits to
nearby sites of interest, including the historic city of
Puebla. For more information, please contact Deb
Adams [email protected] 913-219-4080.

DO SOMETHING KC!
Old Mission wrote a VBS inspired by Matthew West's
song, "Do Something" and the Charlie Hustle Heart
KC shirts that are so popular in the community. Our
VBS was called "Do Something KC!" We served 170
students through 6th grade last week. The week was
spent learning about getting out there and making a
difference in Kansas City by putting our love into action. The story of the Good Samaritan was retold in
engaging and relatable ways for children through
real good Samaritans in Kansas City. We invited community members to share how they are making a
difference in our community by visiting in person
and making videos. Families donated over $1,000 in
cash to be distributed between Roesland Elementary, Hope House, Reach out and Read KC and Johnson County Food Pantry. Children also built a picnic
table and planter boxes to donate to a local family
through Habitat for Humanity and packed nearly 400
sack lunches for the homeless community through
Neighbor 2 Neighbor in Westport. We had a great
week with visitors from the community like Slugger,
KC Wolf, a coach from Sporting KC, dancers from the
Kansas City Ballet and local Soul band, JLove. Over
60% of our children were from the community. God
is good! Thank you for over 100 volunteers and staff
members who made this week possible. If you
would like to purchase a Do Something KC shirt
(children’s $10 and adult’s $15) made by our own
Gonz Medina’s Blue Chip Athletics please see
Michele Bowen on Sundays or contact her
[email protected]. Thanks!

and strawberry shortcakes. Please R.S.V.P 913-7456334 by July 8th. See you there!
A NEW OPPORTUNITY AT ROESLAND
ELEMENTARY: READING TUTORS
CPR TRAINING
CPR training will take place Sunday, July 26 at Old
Mission. More details to come!
Beginning in the Fall of 2015, Roesland Elementary
will implement a reading program to help students
who are at high risk for reading failure (first graders). Volunteers will be trained to use the Barton
Reading and Spelling System. You do not need
teaching experience, just a love for children, and a
concern about education. Volunteers will meet with
the student for 45-60 minutes weekly from 3:00 to
3:45 pm. Materials may be kept by tutors following
completion of a level. Contact Audrey Wiegmann at
913-302-2015 or [email protected].
