Dear Friends in Christ,
The program year is about to begin once again with the anticipated beginning of Sunday School, Wednesday night,
and Sunday morning Worship. There are lots of opportunities for all ages to grow in faith formation. This past
Sunday the Rev. Talitha Arnold offered a devotional based on the above passage, that speaks to this time of year.
Can you hear the urgency in Moses' voice? He knows he's not going with his people into their new life
beyond the wilderness. He also knows that no matter the landscape, the temptations and trials they
experienced in the desert will continue throughout their lives.
So Moses urges them to let those lives—and the lives of their children and their children's children-- be
shaped by God's word. As we gear up for the new school year, we would be smart to heed Moses' urgent
command. Like those ancient Israelites, we too need to be "wise and discerning people." That means we
take seriously our ministries of teaching and faith formation—for all ages.
The African-American theologian Howard Thurman knew the importance of such ministry. In his classic
Disciplines of the Spirit, Thurman wrote of growing up in a Christian tradition with yearly "revivals," when
"opportunity was provided for the surrender of the individual life to God." But Thurman noted, "The church
did not leave (the person) there." With the sponsorship of an older Christian, "experienced in the Way," the
person participated in a weekly prayer service and other faith formation times. "Nurture in the Christian life,"
Thurman affirmed, "was another way of providing a time of intensive, deepening experience which gave the
new resolve a chance to establish itself as a permanent outlet for the creative energies of God."
Like the Israelites, we are called to be a "wise and discerning people"--or in Thurman's words, "the permanent
outlet for the creative energies of God." The place to begin is with our commitment to education.
Prayer: Thank you, God, for the call to be "wise and discerning people." And thank you for teachers, youth
ministers, mentors, and all “Ministers of Education” who help us heed that call. Amen.
I hope that the future offers us all opportunities to be connected to one another’s faith formation so that all accept
the call to be a “wise and discerning people.”

First United Church of Christ in Belleville has a logo!
The logo is a combination of our Mission Statement, a stain glass window, and
congregational conversations this spring. The three words on the right reflect
our mission to Welcome all, to Connect with God and one another, and to
Reach Out to our neighbors both locally and globally. The words “faith, hope,
and love” are inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now faith, hope, and love
abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.” When we welcome, connect, and reach out let us offer faith, hope, and love. Lastly, you might be wondering why the anchor of all the beautiful symbols in our stain glass windows.
The anchor is one of the first symbols of Christian faith. During the First Century, Christians used the anchor to inspire them to keep the faith in the midst of
persecution and anchor their hope in Christ. The words of Hebrews 6:19, “We
have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul” reflect this. A very special thank you to Carly Solberg who created this logo and Kim Goke who worked
very closely with her. Carly is the granddaughter of Joan and Jim Root.

SANDWICH/MEAL ASSEMBLY
SAT. SEPTEMBER 19TH -- 8:30 AM
Volunteers from First Church prepare a
meal for the State Street Family the third Saturday of each month. We prepare enough food
to feed 100 people. This includes sandwiches,
soft fruit, to-go snacks (individual size), to-go
drinks (water bottles or juice boxes), and dessert. A sign-up sheet will be available at the
Welcome Table on Sunday, September 13th
for the food items we need. Donations in any
size are welcome! Monetary donations are also appreciated. We ask that everything be in
the church kitchen in the basement before
8:30 am on Saturday. We welcome volunteer
help on that Saturday morning to put the sandwiches/meals together! If you have any questions, contact Kim Goke or the church office.
It’s back-to-school-time! Perhaps you’d like
to donate items that make for a healthy school
lunch -- or maybe some snacks to help with
homework time after school. Personal care
supplies are always needed, such as toothpaste,
toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, deodorant, toilet
paper, etc. Drop your items off here at church.
Feel good about giving back by
donating blood--there is a
constant need for blood.
Many people want to give back to the community, but may not have a lot of time to volunteer. The American Red Cross reminds
eligible individuals that in only about an hour,
volunteer blood donors can help save lives.

Trust in the Promise: STEWARDSHIP 2016
There are many ways to give and to support First United Church of
Christ. The most meaningful is making a written promise to share a
portion of your blessings with First Church. The result at the end of
the year may be more or less than the promise made in October, due
to the uncertainties of life – happy or sad.
In mid-September you will receive an Intention of Giving card for
2016 and a guide to help you. In the coming weeks members will
share their faith stories, highlighting the significance of First Church
in their lives and in the community. Bring your Intention of Giving
card to worship on October 11th.

I had a great time at Pilgrim Center Junior camp this summer. I
went crayfishing, kayaking and a lot of swimming during the
week. We also had great food and played a lot of camp games
together. I met some great new friends and can't wait to go
again next year. Thanks to the Women's Guild for the gift of
money to go towards camp. Avery Lettman
I attended an adventure camp at Pilgrim Center this summer.
We went sailing, kayaking, canoeing and rock climbing throughout the week. Also we had gospel and vesper group discussions. One day we took a day trip to the Mackenzie Nature Center and learned things from a DNR specialist and did archery. I
met some new friends as well as some old friends from previous years. Thanks to the Women’s Guild for the gift of money
towards camp. Amanda Lettman
While I was at camp I had a lot of fun. I went
to Jr High Adventure Camp. We went on a
different adventure each day. The adventures we went on were rock climbing,
kayaking, sailing, and we went to the MacKenzie Center for archery and survival
skills. This year’s theme was fire. While we
were at the MacKenzie Center we learned a
few ways to start survival fires. At the end
of the week we had a lip sync battle between each group and the counselors. It was
really fun going on all the adventures and

mission well, but is at the point where it
needs to be replaced. The Women’s Guild
has kindly made a donation towards the

Treasurer’s Report: Short discussion on reasons deposits reported as weekly collected and treasurer’s report differ.
Jeff made a motion to accept the report and pay all bills contingent on availability of funds. Greg seconded, carried.
Secretary’s Report: No Changes.
Consent Agenda (committee reports): Building and Grounds was removed for discussion. All other reports received
were accepted.

Endowment – Jean - Met on June 7th to review bylaws – will follow up in near future.

Pastor’s Report: Looking ahead - June 26-30 – Delegate to General Synod meeting in Cleveland. September 3 - October 7 – participating in “Church Renewal 2.0: From Growth Spurt to True Transformation.” Thru July 31 – continuing
to preach through the Psalms, organizing small group ministries, and coordinating worship theme related hands on
activities for young people during worship. Goals – 2014-15 – Increase worship attendance by 20%, attract 3 new families/household to worship, and get 30% of congregation involved in ministry.
Old Business:
Church boiler – Jeff – had discussed the need for more trained personnel. Committee will proceed to identify potential personnel.
Bells – Jeff – manual procedure in place. Will look into automated procedure.
Musical Coop: Kim will work with Sara Krueger to implement something in fall.
New Business:
Building & Grounds – will look into policy for shutting down boiler in spring and establishing a date. Waiting to
start out door fellowship pilot – weather prohibitive to date. Purchased atomic clock for Fellowship Hall Sanctuary clock is memorial - will work with Memorial Committee to retire and replace.
Discuss damaged Church sign – due to last storm – near High School – Motion by Jean to order replacement (~$139
plus installation costs), seconded by Kim, approved. Referred to Bldg & Gnds for action.
Basement Clean Up Day – Request Kerry VanKleeck get a list from Cleaning Service of things that need to be done
by volunteers. Will then issue a call for volunteers.
Nominating committee – decided to establish an Ad Hoc committee to recruit new members for Finance Committee and Council. Possible members include: Greg Wolff, Sandy Van Kleeck, Kathy Stenseth, Jayne Campbell
and Shawn Kippley. Paul and Pastor Heide will contact.

Discuss installing additional speakers in back of sanctuary – referred to Building and Grounds.
UCC Campaign to raise funds for camp – after short discussion decided not able to participate in this time. Motion

Fundraising – discuss lowering cost of ornaments – still have 200 left. Motion to lower cost to $10.00 each and authorizing Pastor using as gifts for events like baptisms, confirmation, etc. at her discretion. Motion by Chris,
seconded by James, carried.
New Business:
Computer purchase for Pastor Heide and AV System use – need HDMI capability. Motion to purchase computer
not to exceed $1200 and to request donations in newsletter made by Kim, seconded by James, carried.
Establish three goals for immediate action:
Increase community outreach – participate in Lake Fest, Fall Fest & UFO days. Organize ice cream social for
neighbors in fall.
Design a “logo” for First Church – utilizing the words reaching, welcoming, and connecting. Goal to have
draft by 8/17.
Continue faith formation activities.
