Met ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ willen het Festival van Vlaanderen Brussel en Toerisme Vlaanderen de herdenking
van Wereldoorlog I gezamenlijk luister bijzetten, zowel letterlijk als figuurlijk. Het project is van onderuit gegroeid
en geeft een stem aan gewone mensen, afkomstig uit alle windstreken, van Australië over Thailand en India tot
Canada. Het onderstreept het belang van vrede – veel meer dan op een louter symbolische manier. Dit is ook een
ode aan Europa en aan het feit dat er, mee dankzij de Europese Unie, al meer dan 65 jaar vrede én gezamenlijke
vooruitgang bestaan in dit deel van de wereld. Diezelfde EU kreeg in 2012 de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede.
Ten slotte hopen wij dat dit project iedereen die met kunst en cultuur bezig is, aanmoedigt én inspireert, in en
buiten Brussel. Laat nu deze oproep voor vrede in de wereld weerklinken!

En organisant “1000 Voices for Peace”, le Festival de Flandre Bruxelles et Toerisme Vlaanderen veulent, comme il se doit,
apporter leur contribution à la commémoration de la Première guerre mondiale. Le projet est parti de la base et donne une
voix à des gens ordinaires, venus de partout – de l’Australie au Canada en passant par l’Inde et la Thaïlande. Cet entreprise
met l’accent sur l’importance de la paix – et ne se contente pas de le faire de manière symbolique. Car il s’agit ici aussi d’une
ode à l’Europe qui rend aussi hommage à l’Union européenne, qui a contribué à assurer plus de 65 ans de paix et de progrès
sur notre continent. D’ailleurs, c’est précisément l’Union européenne qui s’est vu attribuer le Prix Nobel de la paix en 2012.
Enfin, nous espérons que ce projet servira d’inspiration et d’encouragement à tous ceux qui s’occupent d’art et de
culture, à Bruxelles et ailleurs. Puisse cet appel à la paix retentir dans le monde entier!

A CALL FOR PEACE
With ‘1000 VoicesforPeace’, Flanders Festival Brussels and Tourism Flanders want to add luster both literally
and figuratively to the commemoration of World War I together. The project grew from the grassroots and gives
voice to ordinary people from every corner of the world, from Australia to Thailand and from India to Canada. It
underscores the importance of peace, in far more than a purely symbolic manner. This is also an ode to Europe
and to the fact that, in part thanks to the European Union, there has been over 65 years of peace and joint progress
in this part of the world, the same EU that in 2012 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Finally, we hope that this project encourages and inspires everyone involved in the arts and culture, inside and
outside Brussels. Now let this call for peace resound throughout the world!

Meer dan 9 miljoen soldaten uit zowat 50 hedendaagse staten hebben de ‘Groote Oorlog’ niet overleefd. In ons
land sneuvelden 600.000 militairen, waarvan 550.000 in de Westhoek, in Flanders Fields.
Om de gruwelen van 1914-1918 te herdenken, investeert Vlaanderen niet alleen in infrastructuurprojecten.
Vlaanderen investeert ook in belevingsgerichte evenementen, zoals ‘1000 Voices for Peace’.
Dit slotconcert illustreert niet alleen het mondiale karakter van het conflict 100 jaar geleden. ‘1000 Voices for
Peace’ bevestigt de rol van kunst - in dit geval van samen zingen - als een universeel bindmiddel tussen mensen,
tussen jong en oud. Het grijpt de herdenking aan om te reflecteren over oorlog en vrede.
De Vlaamse regering verleent haar volle steun aan dit uniek multinationaal en multicultureel project van het
Festival van Vlaanderen Brussel. We willen immers harten beroeren en emoties losweken. We willen mensen
laten zien en doen begrijpen. In nagedachtenis van hen die stierven, ter lering van hen die herdenken.

Plus de 9 millions de soldats originaires d’une cinquantaine d’États contemporains ont péri au cours de la « Grande
Guerre ». Dans notre pays, ils sont 600 000 à être tombés au champ d’honneur, dont 550 000 dans le Westhoek, zone
de front de la Flandre occidentale (les « Flanders Fields »).
En mémoire des atrocités de 1914-1918, la Flandre n’investit pas seulement dans des projets d’infrastructure, mais
également dans des événements tournés vers l’émotion. Au rang de ceux-ci : « 1000 Voices for Peace ». Ce grand
concert de clôture illustre le caractère mondial du conflit dont nous commémorons le centenaire, mais pas seulement.
1000 Voices for Peace confirme aussi la capacité de l’art – et du chant choral en particulier – à tisser des liens entre
les gens, entre les jeunes et les moins jeunes. Une belle occasion qu’offre cette commémoration de réfléchir à la
guerre et à la paix.
Le gouvernement flamand appuie sans réserve ce projet unique multinational et multiculturel du Festival de Flandre
Bruxelles. Nous voulons toucher les cœurs et libérer les émotions. Nous voulons que le public voie et comprenne. En

More than 9 million soldiers from approximately 50 present-day nations did not survive the “Great War”. In Belgium
alone, 600,000 service men lost their lives; 550,000 of them were killed in the Westhoek, in Flanders Fields.
To commemorate the tragedies of 1914-1918, Flanders is not only investing in infrastructural projects; it is also
investing in experience-based events, such as “1000 Voices for Peace”.
This final concert illustrates not only the global character of the conflict that took place over a century ago; “1000
Voices for Peace” also confirms the role of art - in this case, singing together - as a universal means of drawing
people together, young and old alike. It uses the commemoration as a way to reflect upon war and peace.
The Government of Flanders is providing its full support to this unique multinational and multicultural project of
the Flanders Festival Brussels. After all, our aim is to touch hearts and elicit emotions. We wish to show this war
to people so that they can understand it. To commemorate those who died, so those who commemorate them
may learn from it.

1000 STEMMEN VOOR VREDE
Is ‘zingen voor de vrede’ iets naïefs? Iets dat makkelijk kan worden weggezet als schadeloze, want dromerige Spielerei?
De meer dan 1.300 deelnemers aan het project ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ – met zangers en andere musici uit achttien
verschillende landen, honderd jaar geleden deelnemers aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog – vinden alvast van niet. Het past
niet alleen in de uitgebreide herdenkingscampagne rond de 100e verjaardag van de start van de ‘Groote Oorlog’, maar
sluit ook aan bij een lange, en rijke traditie van vooraanstaande musici, die vonden dat samen musiceren en beluisteren
een bijzondere, mobiliserende kracht heeft.
‘1000 Voices for Peace’ verenigt op 9 november 39 koren, goed voor 1.300 amateur-zangers, jong en oud, uit alle
windstreken, en afkomstig uit landen die behoorden tot de in de Eerste Wereldoorlog strijdende naties. “De rode
draad is het muzikale engagement van musici zoals de beroemde cellist Pablo Casals en zijn collega, de violist
Yehudi Menuhin,” vertelt Anthony Heidweiller die instaat voor de regie en de artistieke coördinatie.. “Casals’ ‘El
Cant dell Ocells’, het lied van de vogels, overigens zijn lijflied, zal in een aantal vormen weerklinken.” Het project is
in zekere zin ook schatplichtig aan het humanitaire pleidooi van de onvermoeibare Menuhin. Die formuleerde zijn
opdracht als volgt, in zijn autobiografie Unfinished Journey: “Het is immers de taak van de muzikale kosmopoliet
om stuifmeel van bloem tot bloem te brengen, te zaaien, webben te weven en broze bruggen te bouwen.”
“Het concert wordt in drie delen opgebouwd,” vertelt Heidweiller. “Dat zijn achtereenvolgens: de Onschuld, de
Chaos en de Hoop. We beginnen dus met de ‘Onschuld’, met een stuk van de Chinese componist Tan Dun. Daarna
gaan we naar muziek luisteren van de jonge, Noorse componist Ola Gjeilo. Dan komt de ‘Chaos’, die door een
werk van Sofia Goebaidoelina, ‘Rider on a White Horse’ wordt gevat. De zangers komen dan in beweging. Dat
zal zijn alsof de wereld aan het bewegen is, één grote bijenkorf. In dit deel weerklinkt ook orgelmuziek van de
enige Belgische componist in het programma, André Devaere, die helaas op jonge leeftijd is gesneuveld op de
slachtvelden rond Ieper.
Eindigen doen we met ‘Dies Illa’, de wereldpremière van het nieuwe werk van Krzysztof Penderecki. Daaruit
spreekt de ‘Hoop’.” Tussendoor worden gedichten en ooggetuigenverslagen voorgedragen. Onder andere van
Louis Barthas, die als Franse frontsoldaat in zijn dagboek de onvoorstelbare verschrikkingen, het afstompende
effect daarvan én de laatste restjes menselijkheid aan het front haarscherp beschrijft. Gedichten als die van de
Pools-Amerikaanse jood Moisje-Lejb Halpern en de Indische schrijver-mysticus Rabindranath Tagore proberen
het rauwe surrealisme van de oorlog in woorden te vatten.
“Een muziekproject als dit is allesbehalve vrijblijvend Muziek, kan mee antwoorden formuleren op vragen die in
deze globaliserende, kosmopolitische wereld opduiken. Hoe gaan we om met de crisis? Met de uitdagingen op het
klimaatvlak? Bovendien vraagt een publiek met diverse culturele achtergronden, diverse manieren van muziek
maken en beluisteren, ook een nieuwe, creatieve omgang van de uitvoerders, aldus Heidweiller.” Het gaat dan
niet zozeer over virtuositeit, meent hij, met vaak technisch aartsmoeilijke uitdagingen, dan wel over authenticiteit,
over inzet, verbondenheid en wederzijds respect. Het programma van ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ blijft ook ver weg
van de historische, opgeklopte, vaak instrumentele muziek die de heroïek van het eigen land en het grote gelijk
moesten aanwakkeren.
Ten slotte mikt het project ook heel bewust op duurzaamheid, onder meer door de samenwerking met een
geëngageerd biologisch bedrijf als Biofresh en de oprichting van het koor Colom, in het Koninklijk Atheneum van
Koekelberg. Misschien op het eerste zicht schijnbaar bescheiden elementen, maar – om het met Menuhin te
zeggen – broze bruggen, die wel degelijk een verschil kunnen maken.
1000 VOIX POUR LA PAIX
« Chanter pour la paix », est-ce naïf ? Rien d’autre qu’un divertissement chimérique, aussitôt oublié parce
qu’indolore ? Les plus de 1 300 participants au projet « 1000 Voices for Peace » – chanteurs et musiciens issus de
dix-huit pays ayant jadis pris part au premier conflit mondial – sont d’un autre avis. Non seulement l’événement
fait-il partie de la grande campagne de commémoration organisée autour du centenaire de l’éclatement de la
« Grande Guerre », mais il se rattache également à une longue et riche tradition de musiciens de premier plan
pour qui jouer et écouter de la musique ensemble dégage une inépuisable force mobilisatrice
Ce 9 novembre, 1000 Voices for Peace rassemble 39 chorales, soit, au total, 1 300 choristes amateurs, jeunes et moins
jeunes, de toutes origines, mais toutes issues de nations qui ont combattu pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. « Le fil
rouge, c’est l’engagement musical de musiciens tels que le violoncelliste réputé Pablo Casals ou son illustre confrère,
le violoniste Yehudi Menuhin », explique Anthony Heidweiller, régisseur et coordinateur artistique du projet. Le El Cant
dels Ocells, le chant des oiseaux, arrangé par Casals – c’est aussi son air préféré – résonnera sous de multiples formes.
» Dans un certain sens, le projet a aussi partie liée au plaidoyer en faveur de l’humanité de l’infatigable Menuhin. Dans
son autobiographie intitulée Unfinished Journey, ce dernier évoquait sa « mission » en ces termes : « Quelle serait
la tâche d’un être cosmopolite et de musique si ce n’est de porter du pollen de fleur en fleur, inséminer, disséminer,
tisser des réseaux et construire de fragiles ponts ? »
« Le concert est constitué de trois parties, explique Anthony Heidweiller, qui s’intitulent successivement : l’Innocence,
le Chaos et l’Espoir. » L’Innocence débute sur une œuvre du compositeur chinois Tan Dun. Ensuite, nous écouterons la
musique du jeune compositeur norvégien Ola Gjeilo. Vient ensuite le Chaos, que l’on entame avec une œuvre orchestrale
de Sofia Goebaidoelina, Rider on a White Horse. C’est alors que les chanteurs entrent en scène. Ce sera comme si
le monde entier se mettait à bouger – une immense ruche. Vous entendrez ensuite une œuvre interprétée à l’orgue
et composée par l’unique compositeur belge du programme, André Devaere, décédé dans la fleur de l’âge lors des
combats près d’Ypres.
Nous terminerons avec Dies Illa, la première mondiale de la toute dernière œuvre de Krzysztof Penderecki, qui
exprimera l’Espoir. Au fil de notre progression, nous entendrons des récitations de poèmes et des lectures de
témoignages d’époque. De, notamment, Louis Barthas, soldat français qui consignait dans son journal intime avec la
plus grande précision les horreurs indescriptibles auxquelles il assistait, l’effet d’abrutissement qu’elles provoquaient,
et les derniers restes d’humanité qui pouvaient s’observer au front. Les poèmes, de la plume de Moisje-Lejb Halpern,
juif américain d’origine polonaise, et de l’écrivain et mystique indien Rabindranath Tagore, seront autant de tentatives
de mettre en mots le surréalisme cru de la guerre.
Un projet musical tel que celui-ci est tout sauf gratuit ; il entend au contraire apporter une contribution durable. Pour
Heidweiller, « la musique peut me donner des réponses à des questions que ce monde cosmopolite et de plus en plus
global suscite en moi. Comment gérer la crise ? Comment relever les défis climatiques ? En outre, un public avec un
bagage culturel et des manières de jouer et d’écouter la musique variés demande aussi une attitude plus créative de
la part des exécutants. » Il se s’agit donc pas de virtuosité, explique-t-il, de prouesses techniques hors norme, mais
bien d’authenticité, d’engagement, de fraternité et de respect mutuel. Le programme de 1000 Voices for Peace est
donc fort éloigné de la musique historique, gonflée et souvent instrumentale que l’héroïsme patriotique et la raison
ont maintes fois suscitée.
Enfin, le projet mise également de manière très réfléchie sur la durabilité, notamment grâce à la collaboration avec
une entreprise biologique engagée, Biofresh, et à la création de Colom, à l’Athénée royal de Koekelberg. Deux éléments
à première vue très éloignés l’un de l’autre, mais – pour l’exprimer avec les mots de Menuhin – des ponts fragiles, qui
pourtant peuvent faire la différence, en dépit de leur fragilité.
1 000 VOICES FOR PEACE
Is ‘singing for peace’ something naïve? Something that can be easily dismissed as harmless because it’s dreamy
child’s play? The 1300 plus participants in the ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ project – with singers and other musicians from
18 different countries that were involved in the First World War 100 years ago – certainly don’t think so. It’s not only
part of the elaborate commemoration campaign marking the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War, it’s also
in keeping with a long and venerable tradition of distinguished musicians who felt that making and listening to music
together has a special, mobilising power.
On 9 November, ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ will gather 39 choirs numbering 1,300 amateur singers, both young and
old, from all corners of the world and from countries who fought during the First World War. “The guiding theme
is the musical commitment of musicians like the famous cellist Pablo Casals and his colleague, violinist Yehudi
Menuhin,” relates Anthony Heidweiller. “Casal’s ‘El Cant dell Ocells’ the song of the birds is, as it happens, also
his favourite song and it will be performed in a number of variations.” After a fashion, the project is also owed to
the humanitarian plea of the indefatigable Menuhin who formulated his mission in his autobiography Unfinished
Journey as follows: “After all, it is the task of the musical cosmopolitan to carry pollen from flower to flower, to
sow, weave webs and build fragile bridges.” [quote translated]
“The concert will be divided into three parts,” Heidweiller informs us, “Those are, in order of appearance:
Innocence, Chaos and Hope. We start with ‘Innocence’ with work by the Chinese composer Tan Dun. Subsequently,
we move on to listen to the music of the young, Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Then there is ‘Chaos’, captured
by a composition from Sofia Gubaidulina called ‘Rider on a White Horse’, a work for orchestra. After that, the
singers will start to stir. It will feel like the world is moving, one enormous beehive. In this part, we will hear
organ music by the only Belgian composer on the programme, André Devaere, who sadly lost his life at a young
age on the battlefields around Ieper. We end with ‘Dies Illa’, the world première of the new work by Krzysztof
Penderecki depicting ‘Hope’.” In between, there will be recitations of poems and readings of eye witness accounts.
By, amongst others, Louis Barthas, a French front soldier who very aptly describes the front’s unimaginable
horrors, their numbing effect and the final remnants of humanity in his diary. Poems like those of the PolishAmerican Jew Moisje-Lejb Halpern and the Indian writer-mystic Rabindranath Tagore try to capture in words
the raw surrealism of war.
A music project like this one is all but free of moral Music, according to Heidweiller, “can help formulate answers to
questions that pop up in this globalising, cosmopolitan world. How do we deal with the crisis? With the challenges
of the changing climate? Furthermore, an audience with a different cultural background and different ways of
making and listening to music requires a new, creative approach on the part of the performers.” It is not so much
about virtuosity, he believes, with often technically extremely difficult challenges, but rather about authenticity,
devotion, connectedness and mutual respect. The programme for ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ also steers clear of the
historical, exaggerated, often instrumental music that served to stimulate the heroism and the self-righteousness
of the motherland.
Finally, the project also purposefully aims at sustainability, for instance by working with a dedicated organic foods
company like BioFresh and establishing the choir Colom at the Koninklijk Atheneum of Koekelberg. At first maybe
rather modest elements, but – to use the words of Menuhin – fragile bridges that can indeed make a difference.

WERELDCREATIE ‘DIES ILLA’ VAN KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI
De Poolse componist Krzysztof Penderecki (°1933) begon na de Tweede Wereldoorlog met een grote scheppingsdrang aan een radicaal vernieuwend oeuvre wat weleens omschreven wordt als de ‘catastrofestijl’. Zijn instinctieve
aantrekkingskracht tot het afschuwelijke en het afschrikwekkende werd rechtstreeks gevoed door de geschiedenis.
Penderecki stond begin jaren 60 in de voorste rij van de Europese muzikale avant-garde. Binnen een decennium
schreef hij zijn Ofiarom Hiroszimy-Tren (Klaagzang voor de slachtoffers van Hiroshima), een stuk met krijsende clusterakkoorden, sputterende pizzicatostromen en sireneachtige glissando’s en Dies Irae ter nagedachtenis van de slachtoffers
van Auschwitz. Gevraagd naar of dit nieuwe werk ‘voor symfonisch orkest, massakoor en drie solisten’ aansluit bij
die eerdere werken, zegt Penderecki: “In de jaren 60 inderdaad schreef ik in een stijl met grote clusters en microtonaliteiten. Er is sindsdien veel gebeurd, en ik heb speciale aandacht voor het prachtige instrument dat de stem is. Ik
probeerde opnieuw om vernieuwende muziek te schrijven, maar muziek die ook sterk in de traditie geworteld is. Ik
denk dat ‘Dies Illa’ met één voet in de traditie staat, en met de andere in de ‘nieuwe muziek’ – waarbij de menselijke
stem echt op een bijzondere manier wordt aangewend. Dat gaat van een monumentale, massieve klank, over het
nauwelijks hoorbare gefluister, ruis en gepraat...”
“Dies Illa’ betekent, vertaald, ‘Dag van Toorn’. Want oorlog is toorn, razernij! Oorlog en conflict komen geregeld terug in
mijn werk, in mijn opera’s en de werken voor a capella koor. Aanvankelijk had het festival me gevraagd om historische
tekstfragmenten van getuigen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, en ook gedichten over de oorlog te gebruiken. Maar dat
vond ik te riskant. Omdat er zo mogelijks afbreuk gedaan wordt aan de samenhang van de muziek. Ik heb dan ook
na de eerste gesprekken besloten, en in overleg, om slechts één tekst te gebruiken, namelijk een uit de klassieke,
Latijnse dodenmis. Dat zit heel erg geworteld in een traditie van meer dan 2.000 jaar. Het werk heet ‘Dies Illa,’”
CRÉATION MONDIALE « DIES ILLA » DE KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI
Au lendemain de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, le compositeur polonais Krzysztof Penderecki (°1933), mû par un grand
élan créateur, a entamé une œuvre radicalement nouvelle aux accents souvent décrits comme « catastrophistes ».
Sa force instinctive d’évocation de l’épouvantable et du repoussant est directement alimentée par l’histoire. Au début
des années 1960, Penderecki figure en première ligne de la scène musicale européenne d’avant-garde. C’est au cours
de cette décennie qu’il écrit la Thrène à la mémoire des victimes d’Hiroshima, une œuvre aux clusters perçants,
aux suites crépitantes de pizzicati et aux larges glissandi évoquant les sirènes, ainsi que Dies Irae, en souvenir des
victimes d’Auschwitz. Jetant un coup d’œil rétrospectif sur ses œuvres, il dira : À la question de savoir si cette nouvelle
œuvre « pour orchestre symphonique, grand chœur et trois solistes » est proche de ses premières œuvres, Penderecki
répond : « Dans les années 1960, j’écrivais en effet dans un style qui donnait libre cours aux grands clusters et aux
micro-tonalités. Depuis, beaucoup d’eau a coulé sous les ponts, et j’ai acquis un intérêt particulier pour le fantastique
instrument qu’est la voix. Je me suis à nouveau efforcé d’écrire une musique inédite, résolument moderne, mais une
musique qui soit aussi fortement ancrée dans la tradition. Je pense que Dies Illa possède en effet un pied dans la
tradition, et un autre dans la “nouvelle musique” – où la voix humaine est sollicitée d’une manière particulière. Cela
va de sonorités écrasantes et massives au murmure à peine audible, au brouhaha, aux bavardages…
« Dies Illa signifie littéralement “Jour de Colère”. Car la guerre est l’expression de la colère, la frénésie de la colère !
La guerre et le conflit sont des thèmes récurrents dans mon travail, dans mes opéras et dans mes pièces pour chœur
a capella. Au début, le Festival m’avait demandé d’utiliser des extraits historiques de témoignages de la Première
Guerre mondiale, ainsi que des poèmes sur la guerre. Personnellement, j’ai trouvé cela trop périlleux. Parce que cela
risque de porter préjudice à la cohérence de la musique. À la suite des premiers entretiens, nous avons communément
décidé de n’utiliser qu’un seul texte : un extrait en latin de la classique messe pour les morts. Un texte très fortement
ancré dans une tradition de plus de 2 000 ans ! L’œuvre s’appelle Dies Illa, conclut Penderecki.. »
KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI’S WORLD CREATION ‘DIES ILLA’
The Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki (°1933) showed a great creative urge when, after the Second World
War, he started a radically innovative oeuvre sometimes referred to as the ‘catastrophe style’. His instinctive
attraction to the gruesome and the horrific was fed directly by history. In the early sixties, Penderecki was at the
forefront of the European musical avant-garde. Within a decade, he wrote his Tren Ofiarom Hiroszimy (Threnody
for the Victims of Hiroshima) a piece with screeching cluster chords, sputtering pizzicato streams and siren-like
glissandos And as well as Dies Irae in commemoration of the victims of Auschwitz.
When asked whether this new work ‘for symphonic orchestra, mass choir and three soloists’ is in keeping with
these earlier works, Penderecki says: “I did write in that style in the sixties, with great clusters and micro tonalities.
Much has happened since, and I pay special attention to the beautiful instrument that is the voice. I tried again
to write truly new, innovative music, but also music that is strongly rooted in tradition. I believe that ‘Dies Illa’
has one foot in tradition and the other in ‘new music’ in which the human voice is used in a truly different way. It
ranges from a monumental, massive sound to a barely audible whisper, talking...”
Translated, “Dies Illa’ means, ‘Day of Wrath’. “Because war is wrath, rage! War and conflict reappear regularly
in my work, in my operas and a capella choral work. The festival asked me to use historical text fragments from
witnesses of the First World War as well as poems about the war. But I thought that would be too risky. Because
it may harm the cohesion of the music. So after the first talks and consultations, I decided to use only one text,
one from the classical Latin requiem. It is very deeply rooted in a tradition of over 2000 years. The work is called
‘Dies Illa’,” Penderecki concludes.”

EEN MUZIKALE WERELDREIS DOORHEEN HET PROGRAMMA
Het concert opent met ‘Hero Concerto, 8 ‘Sorrow in the Desert’ van de Chinese componist Tan Dun (°1957). Die
is bij het grote publiek allicht bekend door zijn scores van filmsuccessen als ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’
en ‘Hero’. Hij behoort tot de generatie componisten van de ‘New Wave’, die na de dood van Mao in 1976 hun
achterstand (met dank aan de Culturele Revolutie) snel inhaalden. Tan Dun bewandelde gretig het progressieve
pad, van Debussy naar Boulez, en stak vervolgens ook door naar Cage. Maar hij is nooit de rurale muzikale traditie
vergeten, die hij tijdens de tewerkstellingen op de collectieve boerderijen had leren kennen.
Daarna volgt ‘Sunrise Mass – III ‘The City’ van de Noor Ola Gjeilo (°1978). Die is opgeleid als pianist, en studeerde
verder compositie en filmmuziek. Hij woont en werkt in the Big Apple. Cellist Pablo Casals is op zijn eentje
verantwoordelijkheid voor de wereldwijde populariteit van het Catalaanse volksliedje ‘El Cant dell ocells’, vertaald
als ‘Het lied van de vogels’. Het is een traditioneel kerstliedje, dat verhaalt over de vreugde van de natuur –
en meer bepaald de vogels – bij het nieuws dat Jezus Christus is geboren. Nadat Casals in 1939 het nieuwe,
door de fascistische dictator Franco vormgegeven Spanje verliet, begon hij elk concert met een voor de cello
getranscribeerde versie.
Vervolgens komt ‘The Rider on a White Horse’ van de Russische componiste Sofia Gubaidulina (°1931). Zij is
een vurig bewonderaar van John Cage en maakt in haar werk graag gebruik van allerlei buitenissige geluiden:
gezoem, geklop, als kattengejank klinkende glissando’s van blaas- en koperinstrumenten, gebulder van tamtams,
tuba’s en elektrische gitaren.
Van de Vlaamse organist-componist André Devaere (1890-1914) horen we ‘Preludium en Fugue, Preludium’.
Devaere was soldaat bij het 27e Linieregiment sneuvelde in de eerste oorlogsmaanden, amper 24.
Dit alles leidt ons uiteindelijk naar de speciaal voor deze gelegenheid gecomponeerde creatie ‘Dies Illa’ van
Krzysztof Penderecki.
Tussendoor worden ook woorden uitgesproken – gedichten, ooggetuigenverslagen en persoonlijke beschouwingen
van mensen van nu. Woorden die de verschrikkingen van toen proberen te bezweren.
“Dit project doet een serieuze poging om niet alleen de oorlog in de herinnering te brengen, maar nodigt ook een
heleboel mensen uit om samen te musiceren, en iets moois te maken,” vertelt Gunther Broucke, intendant van het
Brussels Philharmonic. “Dat past helemaal in mijn aanvoelen van hoe we met deze gruwelijke geschiedenis moeten
omgaan. ‘1000 Voices for Peace’ is dus allerminst een goedkope ‘nooit meer oorlog’-slogan, maar zoekt precies naar
datgene wat we in de plaats kunnen stellen. Dus: als we niet met elkaar gaan vechten, kunnen we veel beter met
elkaar gaan zingen!”
LE PROGRAMME PROPOSE UN VOYAGE MUSICAL INTERNATIONAL
Le concert s’ouvre sur le Hero Concerto, 8, Sorrow in the Desert, du compositeur chinois Tan Dun (°1957). Ses
bandes sonores remarquées de Tigre et dragon et de Hero ont fait connaître Tan Dun du grand public. Il appartient à la
génération des compositeurs de la « Nouvelle Vague » qui, après la mort de Mao en 1976, ont rapidement rattrapé leur
retard (grâce à la révolution culturelle). Tan Dun a parcouru avec avidité la voie de la musique progressive, de Debussy
à Boulez, avant de découvrir John Cage. Il n’a pourtant jamais oublié la tradition musicale rurale qu’il a apprise alors
qu’il était contraint de travailler dans les fermes collectives.
Ensuite, nous entendrons Sunrise Mass – III, The City, du norvégien Ola Gjeilo (°1978). Ce pianiste de formation a
également étudié la composition et la musique de film. Aujourd’hui, il vit et travaille à New-York. C’est au violoncelliste
Pablo Casals que l’on doit la popularité mondiale du chant folklorique catalan El Cant dels ocells, dont la traduction
littérale est « Le Chant des oiseaux ». Ce cantique traditionnel de Noël traduit la joie de la nature – et des oiseaux
en particulier – à l’annonce de la naissance de Jésus Christ. Après avoir fui en 1939 une Espagne désormais fasciste
modelée par Franco, Casals ouvrait chaque concert avec une version d’El Cant, arrangée pour violoncelle.
La suite du programme annonce The Rider on a White Horse, de la compositrice russe Sofia Gubaidulina (°1931).
Fervente admiratrice de John Cage, elle fait volontiers usage dans son œuvre de toutes sortes de sons issus de
l’extérieur : bourdonnements, clapotis, aux côtés de glissandi miaulés par les cuivres et les instruments à vent, de
roulements de tam-tams et autres sons tirés de tubas et de guitares électriques.
Puis, du compositeur et organiste flamand André Devaere (1890-1914), nous entendrons Prélude et fugue, prélude.
André Devaere, soldat au 27e régiment de ligne, a péri dans les premiers mois de la guerre – il avait 24 ans.
Enfin, en point d’orgue de l’événement, nous découvrirons le Dies Illa spécialement composé pour l’occasion par
Krzysztof Penderecki.
Au fil du programme, nous entendrons également des récitations poétiques et des lectures de témoignages de jadis,
entrecoupés de réflexions personnelles de contemporains. Des mots et encore des mots pour s’efforcer de conjurer
les horreurs du passé.
« Ce projet non seulement tente de commémorer la guerre avec le sérieux qui s’impose, mais invite également un
grand nombre de personnes à faire de la musique ensemble, afin d’en faire quelque chose de superbe, explique
Gunther Broucke, administrateur du Brussels Philharmonic. Cela rentre tout à fait dans ma conception de la
façon dont nous devons gérer ce pan terrible de l’histoire. 1000 Voices for Peace est donc tous sauf un slogan à
bon marché du type “plus jamais la guerre”, parce qu’il va précisément à la recherche de ce que nous pourrions
mettre à la place. En résumé : au lieu de nous combattre, nous ferions mieux de chanter ensemble ! »
A MUSICAL WORLD TRIP THROUGH THE PROGRAMME
The concert will open with ‘Hero Concerto, 8 ‘Sorrow in the Desert’ by Chinese composer Tan Dun (°1957). Most
people probably know him from the scores he wrote for box office hits like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’
and ‘Hero’. He is one of the ‘New Wave’ generation of composers who quickly caught up (thanks to the Cultural
Revolution) after Mao’s death in 1976. Tan Dun eagerly walked the progressive road, from Debussy to Boulez and
subsequently also found his way to Cage. But he never forgot the rural musical tradition that he became familiar
with while employed on the collective farms.
What follows is ‘Sunrise Mass – III ‘The City’ from the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo (°1978). He trained as a pianist and
continued to study composition and film music. He lives and works in the Big Apple. Cellist Pablo Casals is
single-handedly responsible for the global popularity of the Catalan folk song ‘El Cant dell ocells’, translated as
‘The song of the birds’. It is a traditional Christmas song that talks of the joy of nature – and, more specifically,
of the birds – at the news that Jesus Christ was born. After Casals left Franco’s newly formed Spain in 1939, he
started every concert with a version transcribed for cello.
Next up will be ‘The Rider on a White Horse’ from the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina (°1931). She is an avid
admirer of John Cage and likes to use a plethora of excessive sounds in her work: buzzing, knocking, glissandos
from wind and brass instruments that sound like caterwauling, thundering of tom-toms, tubas and electric guitars.
From the Flemish organist-composer André Devaere (1890-1914), we will hear ‘Preludium en Fugue, Preludium’.
Devaere was a soldier who fought in the 27th front line regiment and who, at barely 24, was killed in the first
months of war.
All this ultimately leads to the work that was specially composed for this occasion: ‘Dies Illa’ by Krzysztof
Penderecki.
In between, words will be spoken – poems, eye-witness accounts and personal considerations of people in the
present. Words that attempt to ward off the horrors that occurred.
“This project is making a serious attempt not only to commemorate the war but also to get a lot of people together
to make music and to make something beautiful,” relates Gunther Broucke, intendant of the Brussels Philharmonic.
“The way I see it, this fits in perfectly with how we must deal with this horrific part of our history. So ‘1000 Voices for
Peace’ is not just a cheap ‘never again’ slogan, not in the least, rather it looks for what we can replace it with. So, if we
are not going to fight each other, we would much rather sing together!”

DE ARTIESTEN
Krzysztof Penderecki (1933), één van de meest toonaangevende Poolse avant-garde componisten. Zijn grote
oeuvre omvat onder andere orkestwerken, oratorium, opera, liederen, kamermuziek en filmmuziek (onder
andere ‘The Shining’ en ‘The Exorcist’). Zijn best gekende werken zijn onder andere ‘Threnos’ voor de slachtoffers
van Hiroshima, St. Lukas Passie, Pools Requiem en Anaklasis.‘Threnos’, is een klaagzang die hij schreef ter
nagedachtenis van de slachtoffers van Hiroshima. Het stuk ging in wereldpremière op 31 mei 1961 te Warschau.
Het werd in de jaren 60, één van de standaardwerken binnen de nieuwe muziek.
Gedurende zijn muzikale carrière is Penderecki in vele landen geëerd voor zijn composities. Hij won onder andere
in 1968 de Prix Italia voor de Dies Irae ter nagedachtenis van de slachtoffers van Auschwitz. In 1998 werd hij
Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2004 won hij de Praemium Imperiale
voor muziek (Japan) en in 2005 kreeg hij de hoogste Poolse onderscheiding: de Orde van de Witte Adelaar.
Andres Mustonen, studeerde in 1972 af als violist aan de muziekacademie van Tallinn en behaalde vijf jaar later
zijn diploma aan het Conservatorium van Tallinn. Vrij snel richtte hij zijn eigen ensemble, Hortus Musicus, op.
Na zijn studie orkestdirectie werkte hij als dirigent bij orkesten zoals het Riga’s kamerorkest Sinfonietta, Het
Tchaikovsky symfonieorkest, het Philharmonic orkest en het Nationale orkest van Rusland. Daarnaast werkte hij
met het Finse radio symfonieorkest en vele koren in Duitsland, Zweden en Nederland.
In 2003 nam hij deel aan het Viljandi Folk Music Festival en in datzelfde jaar werd hij geëerd door de Estonian
Music Council met een prijs. In 1998 ontving hij de Estse onderscheiding: de Orde van de Witte Ster.
Anthony Heidweiller was onder andere artistiek leider van het Yo Opera Festival. Zowel in binnen -en buitenland
behaalde dit festival grote successen. In 2011 startte hij het gezelschap Operamakers voor het ontwikkelen en
produceren van educatie- en participatieprojecten. Het gezelschap werkt voor organisaties in het binnen -en
buitenland waaronder Het Concertgebouw, De Nationale Opera (Nederland) en NETzeit (Wenen). In 2008 ontving
hij de Prins Bernhard Cultuurprijs voor Educatie en in 2011 de Cultuurprijs van de stad Utrecht. Daarnaast was
hij in 2011 genomineerd in Duitsland voor beste culturele evenement.
Brussels Philharmonic werd opgericht door de openbare omroep (NIR) in 1935. Het orkest werkte met grote
dirigenten, solisten en componisten zoals Stravinsky en Bartók. Sinds 2008 is muziekdirecteur Michel Tabachnik
een sleutelfiguur in de werking van het orkest en weet hij het grote orkestrepertoire met de muziek van de 20ste
eeuw te koppelen. Het orkest is niet alleen thuis op de grote podia in Vlaanderen, maar ook in de rest van Europa,
met een residentie in het Parijse Cité de la musique, jaarlijkse concerten in het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, het
Festival Musica in Strasbourg en het Festival de Besançon. Internationale erkenning kwam er met de Golden
Globe-winnende soundtrack voor ‘The Aviator’ van Martin Scorsese (2005), en meer recent dankzij de Oscarwinnende muziek voor ‘The Artist’ (muziek van Ludovic Bource).
Sopraan Johanna Rusanen was onder meer lid van het jonge artiestenprogramma bij de Deutsche Oper in Berlijn
voor twee jaar. Gedurende haar carrière in de opera zong ze in producties van de Nationale Opera van Finland,
de opera’s in Vantaa en Turku en de Bolshoi Opera in Moskou.
Rusanen heeft als oratorium soliste opgetreden in Europa, maar ook in Japan, Chili, de Verenigde Staten en NoordKorea. Het sopraanstuk van de Kullervo symfonie gecomponeerd door Jean Sibelius is één van haar bekendste
zangwerken. In 1995 won ze de Timo Mustakallio competitie en in 2001 kreeg ze de Karita Mattila Award.
Poolse mezzosopraan Agnieszka Rehlis was onder andere soliste bij de Wroclaw Opera van 1996 tot 2007. Samen
met deze opera toerde ze onder meer in Duitsland, Engeland, Ierland en ook België. Als mezzosopraan brengt
ze oratoria en cantantes, haar repertoire bevat meer dan zestig stukken. Rehlis trad regelmatig op in concerten
onder leiding van Krzysztof Penderecki waarbij ze zijn werken bracht zoals: “Pools Requiem” en “Te Deum”. In
1991 won ze de Franciszka Platówna zangwedstrijd in Wrocław. Enkele van haar opnames werden bekroond met
de prestigieuze FRYDERYK Awards van de Poolse Fonografische Academie. Op 14 januari 2011 kreeg Agnieszka
Rehlis de eer om op te treden tijdens een speciaal concert in de Philharmonic Hall in Warschau waar ze samen
met het Sinfonia Varsovia orkest het werk bracht van Krzysztof Penderecki “A Sea of Dreams Did Breathe on Me”.
Russische bas Nikolay Didenko studeerde in 2003 af aan de Academy of Choral Art te Moskou als zanger en
dirigent. In 2003 en 2004 was hij solist bij de ‘New Opera’ in Moskou en tot 2005 was hij lid van de Houston Grand
Opera Studio. Daar speelde hij mee in verschillende producties waaronder Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Die Zauberflöte
en Tosca. Daarnaast zong hij mee in ‘Il Turco in Italia’ bij de Koninklijke Deense Opera, in Rayok bij het Liceu
te Barcelona en in Petite Messe Solennelle te Cologne. Recent had Didenko een groot succes met La Forza del
Destina bij Cologne Opera en La Sonnambula in het Bolshoi Theater, waar hij opnieuw is uitgenodigd dit seizoen.
Actrice Isnelle Da Silveira is performer sinds 1979 en vooral gekend voor haar werk in ‘Public Security’ en ‘Anna
Makossa’. Als danseres, choreografe, pedagoge, actrice, songwriter en zangeres is ze een veelzijdige artieste.
Ze ontwikkelde haar eigen talent door verscheidene invloeden en levenservaringen.
Met zijn niet-aflatend engagement voor duurzame vrede, drukte Herman Van Rompuy een onuitwisbare stempel
op het nieuwe Europese presidentschap dat hij gedurende 5 jaar bekleedde. Festival van Vlaanderen Brussel zet
met het concert van 9 november 2014 zijn inspirerende en drijvende kracht als bruggenbouwer tussen landen
en culturen in de kijker.

Luc Tooten is de eerste cellist bij Brussels Philharmonic. Hij studeerde aan het Conservatorium van Brussel bij
Carlo Schmitz en vervolmaakte zich bij Reine Flachot en Mistislav Rostropovitch. Hij legt zich toe op het uitbouwen
van een carrière als chambrist en solist. Tooten speelde al in het binnen- en buitenland onder de leiding van
vermaarde dirigenten zoals Yoel Levy en Tan Dun. Lovende kritieken krijgt hij van het publiek en van de vakpers
voor zijn cd-opnames. Zijn cd opname samen met het Vlaams Radio Orkest van het Symfonische gedicht “Naar
Hoger Licht” van L. De Vocht voor cello en orkest werd door het muziektijdschrift ‘Monde de la Musique’ bekroond
met een ‘Choc’.
Felix Casaer studeert momenteel blokfluit aan het Lemmensinstituut in Leuven. Hij werd geboren te Brussel en
verhuisde als tweejarige naar Brazilië. Op elfjarige leeftijd verhuisde hij naar New York om er blokfluit te studeren
bij Nina Stern en om hobo te spelen in het voorbereidende universitaire programma van de Juilliard School. In
2012 studeerde hij af aan de Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music and Arts en verhuisde hij terug naar België
om Oude Muziek te studeren bij Bart Spanhove en Bert Coen. Daarnaast is Casaer actief als plaatsvervangende
koorleider bij het koor van het Belgische leger.
Twagirayesu Clélia, afkomstig van Rwanda, is 17 jaar en studeert humane wetenschappen in het 6e middelbaar
aan het Atheneum van Koekelberg. Ze heeft interesse in de wereld op politiek en sociaal vlak. Daarom spendeert
ze graag tijd met jonge kinderen en politieke jongerenorganisaties. Ze zou graag volgend jaar Journalistiek gaan
studeren.
Organist Cindy Castillo studeerde onder andere aan het conservatorium te Brussel, Namen en Parijs. Haar
repertoire is een dialoog tussen het orgel en andere kunstexpressies waaronder dans en video. Voorbije seizoenen
werd ze uitgenodigd om grote recitals te geven waaronder in de kathedraal van Brussel, de Filharmonische Zaal
in Luik en het Ars Musica festival. Vandaag is Castillo laureaat van stichtingen als de Rotary Club en Vocatio. In
2008-2009 werd ze uitverkoren tot “Artist in Residence”aan de Sapporo Concert hall in Japan.
LES ARTISTES
Krzysztof Penderecki (1933) est l’un des compositeurs polonais d’avant-garde les plus réputés. Son œuvre prolifique
comprend notamment des partitions pour orchestre, des oratorios, des opéras, des lieder, de la musique de chambre
et des musiques de film (notamment pour « The Shining » et « L’exorciste »). Ses œuvres les plus renommées sont,
notamment, la Thrène à la mémoire des victimes d’Hiroshima, la Passion selon Saint-Luc, le Requiem polonais et
Anaklasis. La Thrène, lamento écrit en souvenir des victimes d’Hiroshima, a été créée en première mondiale le 31 mai
1961 à Varsovie. Avec elle, c’est une œuvre clé de la nouvelle musique qui voyait le jour au cours de la décennie 1960.
Tout au long de sa carrière musicale, Penderecki a été célébré dans nombre de pays pour ses compositions. Il a
notamment décroché en 1968 le prix Italia pour son Dies Irae, en souvenir des victimes d’Auschwitz. En 1998, il est
nommé membre honorifique étranger de l’American Academy of Arts and Letters. En 2004, il remporte le Praemium
Imperiale de la musique (Japon) et, en 2005, il est décoré de l’Ordre de l’Aigle blanc, la plus haute distinction polonaise.
Andres Mustonen, violoniste diplômé de l’académie de musique de Tallinn en 1972, décroche cinq ans plus tard son
diplôme du Conservatoire de Tallinn. Rapidement, il monte son propre ensemble, Hortus Musicus. Après des études
de direction d’orchestre, il dirige notamment l’orchestre de chambre Sinfonietta de Riga, l’orchestre symphonique
Tchaïkovski, l’orchestre philharmonique et l’orchestre national de Russie. Il collabore ensuite avec l’Orchestre
symphonique de la radio finlandaise et de nombreux chœurs en Allemagne, en Suède et aux Pays-Bas. En 2003, il
participe au festival de musique folklorique de Viljandi. La même année, le conseil estonien de la musique lui décerne
un prix. En 1998, il est décoré de l’Ordre estonien de l’Étoile blanche.
Anthony Heidweiller a été notamment directeur artistique du Yo ! Opera Festival d’Utrecht, un festival particulièrement
plébiscité tant aux Pays-Bas qu’à l’étranger. En 2011, il fonde la compagnie « Operamakers » pour le développement
et la production de projets éducatifs et participatifs. La compagnie travaille pour des organisations dans et hors des
Pays-Bas, notamment le Concertgebouw, l’Opéra national des Pays-Bas, et NETzeit (Vienne). En 2008, il reçoit le prix
de la culture Prins Bernhard de l’éducation et, en 2011, le prix de la culture de la ville d’Utrecht. En 2011 toujours, il
sera nominé pour l’un des meilleurs événements culturels en Allemagne.
Le Brussels Philharmonic a été fondé en 1935 sous l’égide du secteur public de radiodiffusion (INR). L’orchestre
collabore avec de grands chefs d’orchestre et solistes, ainsi qu’avec des compositeurs renommés tels que Stravinsky
et Bartók. Son directeur musical Michel Tabachnik joue un rôle essentiel dans le fonctionnement de l’orchestre depuis
2008 en combinant le répertoire traditionnel avec la musique du XXe siècle. L’orchestre a ainsi conquis une place de

Isnelle Da Silveira, actrice de théâtre et de performance depuis 1979, est connue essentiellement pour son travail
dans Public Security et dans Anna Makossa. Danseuse, chorégraphe, pédagogue, actrice, songwriter et chanteuse,
c’est une artiste aux talents multiples, qu’elle a développés au gré d’influences variées et d’expériences de vie.
Grâce à son engagement interrompu en faveur d’une paix durable, Herman Van Rompuy a laissé une empreinte
durable sur la Présidence européenne qu’il a endossée cinq années durant. Avec le concert du 9 novembre 2014, le
festival de Flandre Bruxelles prend exemple sur l’inspiration et la motivation qui le caractérisent pour jeter des ponts

lui valent des critiques élogieuses tant de la presse spécialisée que du public. En particulier, l’enregistrement avec le
Vlaams Radio Orkest du poème symphonique Naar Hoger Licht [Vers la lumière] de L. De Vocht pour violoncelle et
orchestre lui a valu le prix « Choc du Monde de la musique ».
Felix Casaer étudie actuellement la musique ancienne à l’Institut Lemmens à Louvain. Né à Bruxelles, il part vivre au
Brésil alors qu’il a deux ans. À 11 ans, il s’installe à New York pour étudier la flûte à bec avec Nina Stern. Il apprend
également le hautbois dans le cadre du programme pré-universitaire de la Juilliard School. Diplômé en 2012 de la
High School of Music and Arts Fiorello H. Laguardia, il retourne en Belgique pour étudier la musique ancienne avec
Bart Spanhove et Bert Coen. Felix est également chef de chœur suppléant de la chorale de l’armée belge.

l’Athénée royal de Koekelberg. Elle s’intéresse au monde sur les plans politique et social. C’est pourquoi elle passe

ensuite poursuivre des études de journalisme.
Cindy Castillo est organiste diplômée notamment des conservatoires de Bruxelles, Namur et Paris. Son répertoire
explore les dialogues possibles entre l’orgue et d’autres langages artistiques, notamment la danse et la vidéo. Au cours
des saisons dernières, elle a été invitée à donner de grands récitals, entre autres à la Cathédrale de Bruxelles, à la
Salle philharmonique de Liège, ainsi qu’au festival Ars Musica. Cindy Castillo est également lauréate des fondations
Rotary et de la Vocation. En 2008-2009, elle est désignée artiste en résidence au Sapporo Concert Hall au Japon.
THE ARTISTS
Krzysztof Penderecki (1933) is one of the most outstanding Polish avant-garde composers. His extensive oeuvre
includes orchestra works, oratorio, operas, songs, chamber music and film scores (including ‘The Shining’ and
‘The Exorcist’). His best known work includes ‘Threnos’ for the victims of Hiroshima, the Passion of St. Luke, the
Polish Requiem and Anaklasis.
‘Threnos’ is a lament he wrote to commemorate the victims of Hiroshima. The piece had its world première on
31 May 1961 in Warsaw. In the sixties, it became part of the standard repertoire in new music.
Throughout his musical career, Penderecki has been honoured for his compositions in many countries. These
honours include the Prix Italia in 1968 for the ‘Dies Irae’ which commemorated the victims of Auschwitz; in 1998, he
became a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters; in 2004, he won the Praemium
Imperiale for music (Japan); and in 2005 he received the highest Polish decoration: the Order of the White Eagle.
Andres Mustonen, graduated from the Tallinn music academy in 1972 as a violinist and obtained his diploma at
the Conservatory of Tallinn five years later. Soon, he started his own ensemble, Hortus Musicus. After completing

spending time with young children and political youth organisations. She would like to study journalism next year.
Organist Cindy Castillo studied at the Conservatories in among other cities Brussels, Namur, Paris. Her repertoire
is a dialogue between organ and other artistic expressions including dance and video. In past seasons, she has
been invited to give large recitals in, for instance, the Brussels cathedral, the Philharmonic Hall in Liège and at
the Ars Musica festival. Today, Castillo is laureate at foundations like the Rotary Club and Vocatio. In 2008-2009,
she was chosen as ‘Artist in Residence’ at the Sapporo Concert Hall in Japan.
MET HET OOG OP DUURZAAMHEID
Het feit dat meer dan 1000 musici uit alle windstreken naar Brussel zijn afgezakt om een artistieke invulling te
geven aan de herinnering van de oorlog is een krachtig symbool. Dat biedt veel hoop voor de wereld. Maar wat na
het concert? Anthony Heidweiller, artistiek coördinator: “Ik hoop van harte dat dit niet beperkt blijft tot een eenmalig
‘incident’. Ik zie héél veel enthousiasme. Ik denk bijvoorbeeld aan de leerlingen van het Koninklijk Atheneum van
Koekelberg.” Heidweiller verzorgde in die school in het voorjaar twee intensieve workshops zang. Zijn aanstekelijk
enthousiasme sloeg over en een 80-tal jonge mensen meldde zich aan. Ook al hadden ze nog nooit gezongen of
‘klassieke muziek’ beluisterd, toch wilden ze meewerken aan ‘1000 Voices for Peace’. Het was een kleine stap om
een eigen koor op te richten. Dat kreeg de veelzeggende naam ‘Colom’, duif in het Catalaans. Dat nieuwe koor is
als een dwarsdoorsnede van de Brusselse bevolking: jongeren van heel diverse achtergronden zingen er samen,
en symboliseren op die manier het samenleven, en de hoopvolle droom op een harmonieuze(re) toekomst.
Daarnaast is er binnen het project ook aandacht voor de ecologische invulling van duurzaamheid. Zo werkt ‘1000
Voices for Peace’ samen met Biofresh, een belangrijke speler in de voedseldistributiesector. De heer Renaat Daem
van Biofresh stelt: “Een ambitieus evenement als dit, waar duizenden mensen uit de hele wereld samenwerken om
een krachtige vredesboodschap te verkondigen, vinden wij belangrijk. Wij zorgen voor een lekkere, gezonde maaltijd
voor alle koorleden in de Brusselse biologische boerderij La Ferme Nos Pilif. Ik kan stellen dat dit, hoe bescheiden
ook, een ‘biologische solidariteitsactie’ is. Net als deze muzikanten ijveren wij voor een betere toekomst waarin
gezondheid, ecologie, zorgzaamheid en billijkheid centraal staan.”
LE DÉVELOPPEMENT DURABLE À L’HONNEUR
Que plus d’un millier de musiciens de tous les coins du monde se rassemblent à Bruxelles pour donner une forme
artistique à la commémoration de la Grande Guerre représente un symbole puissant. Et offre de l’espoir au monde. Mais
que restera-t-il de tout cela après le concert ? Anthony Heidweiller, coordinateur artistique, propose sa réponse : « J’espère
de tout cœur que ce projet ne restera pas cantonné à un événement ponctuel. J’observe beaucoup d’enthousiasme. Je
pense notamment aux élèves de l’Athénée royal de Koekelberg. » Heidweiller y dispense en début d’année deux ateliers
intensifs de chant. Son enthousiasme communicatif a fait mouche et « contaminé » quelque 80 jeunes gens. Qu’ils aient ou
non une expérience du chant, qu’ils soient ou non féru de musique classique, ils ont voulu participer au projet 1000 Voices
for Peace. De là à fonder une chorale, il n’y eut qu’un petit pas à franchir. Une chorale baptisée « Colom », qui signifie «
colombe » en catalan – ce qui en dit long. Cette nouvelle chorale forme un échantillon très représentatif de la population
bruxelloise : des jeunes d’origines très diverses chantent ensemble et, ce faisant, symbolisent le vivre ensemble et le
rêve plein d’espoir d’un avenir (plus) harmonieux.
Par ailleurs, dans le cadre du projet, une attention certaine a été accordée à l’écologie et au développement durable. C’est
ainsi que 1000 Voices for Peace collabore avec Biofresh, un acteur important du secteur de la distribution alimentaire.
Laissons la parole à monsieur Renaat Daem de Biofresh: « Un événement aussi ambitieux que celui-ci, qui voit collaborer
des milliers de personnes du monde entier pour délivrer, haut et fort, un message de paix, force notre admiration. De
notre côté, nous nous chargeons d’offrir à tous les choristes un repas délicieux et sain à la La Ferme Nos Pilif, une ferme
bruxelloise bio. Même si c’est à une échelle modeste, je considère cela comme une “action de solidarité biologique”. Tout
comme ces musiciens, nous militons pour un avenir meilleur où santé, écologie, sollicitude et justice seront primordiales. »

That more than 1000 musician from
every corner of the world have come to
Brussels for an artistic interpretation
of the memory of the war is a powerful
symbol. It offers much hope for the
world. But what about after the concert?
Anthony Heidweiller, artistic director: “I
truly hope that it won’t be limited to a
one-off ‘incident’. I see a great deal of
enthusiasm. For instance, amongst the
students of the Koninklijk Atheneum of
Koekelberg.” That is the school where
Heidweiller organised two intensive
singing workshops this last spring. His
infectious enthusiasm caught on and
about 80 young people signed on. Even
though they had never sung or even
listened to ‘classical music’ before,
they wanted to be part of ‘1000 Voices
for Peace’. It was a small step to starting
their own choir which was given the
telling name ‘Colom’, which is Catalan
for pigeon. The result is a cross section
of the Brussels population: young
people from very diverse backgrounds
sing together and that way symbolise
the act of living together and the hopeful
dream of a (more) harmonious future.
Within the project, attention is also
paid to the environmental side of
sustainability. For instance, ‘1000 Voices
for Peace’ is working with Biofresh, an
important player in the food distribution
sector. Mr. Renaat Daem of Biofresh
states: “We think that an ambitious
event like this is important. Thousands
of people from all over the world will be
working together to impart a powerful
message of peace. We’ll be providing
a delicious, healthy meal for all
foreign choir members at the Brussels
organic farm La Ferme Nos Pilif. I can
say that this, however modestly, is an
‘organic solidarity action’. Just like
these musicians, we are showing our
commitment to a better future where
health, the environment, consideration
and fairness are focal points.”
