Pentecost Sunday
New Pastoral Assignments Announced
Jubilee Year of Mercy
On July 1, we will welcome Fr. Bruce Pa erson as our new pastor. Fr. Bruce comes to us
from St. Kilian Parish in Mission Viejo, where Fr. Pat has been assigned as pastor.
Announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy,
Pope Francis challenged us to proclaim
God’s mercy “to everyone without
excep on . . . again and again, with new
enthusiasm and renewed pastoral
ac on” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).
Pentecost proclaims that the door locked
for fi y days is thrown open at last. No
longer closed in on itself, the community
speaks to crowds from different
backgrounds, distant lands, exo c
languages. Everyone hears their na ve
language. The Spirit does not restore
Babel’s uniformity, but forges unity-indiversity of language, race, na onality—
embracing all without excep on. During
this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pentecost’s
Spirit summons us afresh from mediocrity
and isola on to share God’s mercy with
the world. “This is our mission!” Francis
exclaims. We are “given the gi of the
‘tongue’ of the Gospel and the ‘fire’ of the
Holy Spirit, so that while we proclaim
Jesus risen, living and present in our
midst, we may warm . . . the heart of the
peoples, drawing near to Him, the way,
the truth, and the life” (Regina Coeli
address, Pentecost Sunday, May 24,
2015).

What was happening in the Seventh
Century?
From the fourth to the seventh centuries, the Church in Western
Europe had been dealing with invasions from barbarian tribes and
armies from the north, northeast and south. Repeatedly, Visigoths,
Osthogoths, Vandals, Vikings, and others had invaded established
Chris an territories. Even when land was forfeited to the invaders,
a empts were made to Chris anize as many of the invaders as
possible, o en with significant success.
In the seventh century a new threat of invasion was about to take
place, one not so open to Chris an Conversion. Mohammed had
been born in what is now Saudi Arabia in 570 in or near Mecca. His
parents died when he was a young child, and he was raised by an
uncle. As a young man, Mohammed became a merchant and
traveled along merchant routes, during which me, Mohammed
encountered and learned about both Judaism and Chris anity and
found elements in both which appealed to him. The tribal system in
Arabia at that me followed a variety of polytheis c religions,
although there were some concepts of a single God, none of these
had developed into an organized religion. It was par cularly the
unswerving allegiance to monotheism in Judaism and Chris anity
that appealed to Mohammed.
Being of a mys cal nature, Mohammed would o en spend me in
secluded and isolated places, such as a cave, where he would
meditate and seek the truth about God. In his for es, he claimed to
have received a series of revela ons from God, delivered to him by
the Angel Gabriel. These experiences began on December 22, 609
when Mohammed was 40 and con nued un l his death in 632.
These revela ons which contained segments from both the Old and
New Testaments some mes reinterpreted, beginning with
revela ons given to Adam and working through the genera ons to
Mohammed himself. Unlike the Hebrew Scriptures which follow the
lineage of Abraham’s son Isaac, the revela ons place the lineage of
God’s covenant through Abraham’s other son, Ismael. The
collec on of these revela ons is called the Quran, which means
simply, “the Recita on.”
The person of Jesus is included in the revela ons of the Quran,
though he is considered a great prophet, but less than Mohammed,
and not as the Divine Son of God. The Quran acknowledges the
Ascension of Jesus as many of the prophets, Moses, Elijah, and
Mohammed were also said to have ascended, but it does not
accept Jesus death or resurrec on. Mary is men oned more o en
in the Quran than she is in the New Testament, and is highly
honored as are the mothers of all prophets.
From these revela ons, Mohammed began to formulate a religion
based on an immutable will of God to whom all must submit. The
religion was called Islam, a word which meant surrender. The
doctrines of the religion were not nearly as complex as those of
Chris anity and appealed to the wild tribesmen of the area,
replacing the tribal religions with Islam. It was believed that all
persons should submit to God through Islam either by choice, or, if
necessary by force of arms.
The converted Arab tribes joined together into a powerful military
force. The mixture of religion and military ac on was exhilara ng,
and the armies of Islam began to march across the Near East. By
635 Damascus had fallen to Islamic forces, followed by Jerusalem in
637 and Egypt in 641. Not only was land lost, but many Jews and
Chris ans were forced to convert to Islam or face death. Between
674 and 678, Constan nople was besieged, but the armies fought
back so strongly that the Arab forces turned away and
Constan nople remained one of the great centers of Christendom.
But Islamic armies con nued to march across North Africa and by
711 had entered Spain and moved throughout the Iberian
Peninsula headed north un l they had crossed the Pyrenees into
France. There they were stopped in Tours by Charles Martel and
forced to retreat back to Spain, where Islam remained in control for
the next seven hundred years.
And, so, the history of the Church con nues.
