I would like to thank the parents who attended our ‘new’ and ‘existing’
parent coffee mornings held this fortnight and hope that your visit was an
informative one. It is always a pleasure to enable parents to tour the
academy whilst school is in session, so that you receive a taste of your
children’s learning experience at Woodfield. It was lovely to meet and
speak to parents who attended and I would like to remind all parents that
we are only a phone call, or a visit away, if there is anything you wish to discuss
regarding your children’s education.
A further reminder is to all prospective parents that our doors will be open for our Open Evening on Monday
5th October between 5-7pm. Again, this will provide you with a flavour of what Woodfield Academy is
all about and there will be a chance to view all areas of the academy, plus an opportunity to meet with pupils
and staff. I hope that you learn everything that you need, to be able to choose Woodfield for the next phase
of your children’s learning. Please do get in touch if you need to know more!
This week we were very excited to receive Fairtrade ‘Fair-Aware’ status and look forward to further victories
from Miss Knight and her ‘Eco-Warriors’, who have developed our new academy-wide Eco Code, now on
display in every classroom.
Finally, I would like to make a plea on behalf of our Friends of Woodfield (PTA) group. As many of you will
know, events and campaigns organised by this group are very successful and we are very grateful to
everybody who participates and raises valuable funds, which provide resources for our pupils. The truth is
that the organisation of these events is undertaken by just a few colleagues. If you are able to support the
FoW further with just a small amount of your time, our staff and pupils would be extremely grateful.

Important Information
Please note that no energy drinks or 2ltr
bottles of drink are permitted in school at any
time. We do not recommend fizzy drinks in
school at any time and water in a water bottle
will be the only drink allowed in class during
lessons.
No calls home will be made for non-emergency
reasons such as forgotten lunch, PE kits or items for
class. Any such items brought into school will be
passed on to the children.

Used postage stamps are still being collected for
Leukaemia Research. Your help is greatly
appreciated.
KS2 Welcome Disco
Friends of Woodfield will be hosting a KS2 Welcome Disco in the main hall on
Thursday 15th October.
The disco will begin at 4:30pm and end at 6:00pm.
Tickets are £1 each and will be on sale soon.
There will be a refreshment stall with drinks and other items for sale during the
disco.
Please note that children will not be allowed to leave school without an adult.
Fairaware
Woodfield Academy are proud to announce that they are now a Fairaware school!
Within the curriculum pupils have learnt about Fairtrade and how buying Fairtrade can
benefit the people who make the products they eat and use. They have come to
appreciate how much effort goes into making the products that they sometimes take for
granted. Some Year 7 and Year 8 pupils have then completed Fairtrade surveys
showing their knowledge about how the Fairtrade scheme works.
Woodfield will be continuing their Fairtrade work throughout the year and we hope that
you will do your part too.
Tour of the Battlefields

I was extremely lucky
along with Hollie and
Ben, both Year 8 pupils,
to travel to Belgium to
partake in a tour of World
War 1 battlefields and
cemetery’s. This was a
government funded trip to
celebrate the centenary
of the war. In the weeks leading up to our trip we got
together on numerous occasions to research stories
of the soldiers graves we would be visiting. Once in
Belgium, at our first stop, we visited the grave of Nelly
Spindler who was a nurse who treated injured
soldiers. She was only one of two British Female
casualties to be buried in Belgium; her grave is the
most visited at Lijssenthoek Cemetery. Our first day
was followed by a visit to the Death Cells at
Poperinge and we questioned whether it was morally
right for the British Army to use the death sentence to
punish its own men; we then visited Flanders Field
Museum. The final part of the day was my favourite
part of the whole trip and the most moving: The Last
Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. Hollie was
extremely lucky to be chosen to take part in the
ceremony and lay a wreath; all three of us were
touched by the whole evening.
This is a brief overview of our tour, we
experienced so much and we will be creating
a video to share with you all. I had so many
proud teacher moments, Ben and Hollie were
both an absolute credit to the school. I know
they learnt so much and were enormously
moved by the whole experience.

Emma Shevah visit
We will be welcoming author Emma Shevah into school on Thursday 8th October.
Emma is half Irish and half Thai. Her great-great-grandfather was King Rama I of
Thailand so, by all rights, she should be living a life of ease and luxury in the tropics.
Instead, she spends her days dashing around rainy North London writing, teaching
English and raising her four children.
Her area of specialty is identity, race and culture. Stories and narratives play a
crucial role in overcoming discrimination, racism and prejudice as narratives help us
understand ourselves and each other.
Emma will lead several writing workshops as well as talking about her
books “Dream On Amber” and “Dara Palmer’s Major Drama”. Both
books are exceptionally funny and heartwarming novels about
modern-day families, starting school, being of mixed race and
celebrating uniqueness. They are packed with dialogue, while their
humour and illustrations lend them Wimpy Kid appeal.
There will be opportunities throughout the day for pupils to purchase
copies of her books, but no obligation to do so. Extracts from both
books are featured on the Lovereading4kids website.
“Dara Palmer’s Major Drama” is also featured in this term’s Scholastic
Book Club leaflet at a discounted price of £3.99.
