The Roman Ridge School Issue 3— Summer Term 2012—Newsletter THANKSGIVING SERVICE & GRADUATION CEREMONY MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Summer Term 2012 brought with it an array of emotions, ranging from excitement, exhilaration, jubilation, pride, reflection and deep gratitude for our countless blessings! Through this newsletter, we invite you to share in our experiences and achievements. We thank you for your continued interest and tremendous support for our programmes. On behalf of all of us at The Roman Ridge School, we wish you a safe holiday and look forward to welcoming you back on 3 September 2012. Valerie Mainoo INSIDE THIS ISSUE Class Visits & Excursions 2 Our school year came to a close in grand style, with a lavish ceremony celebrating the Graduating Class of 2012 . The event began with a Thanksgiving Service in commemoration of The Roman Ridge School’s 10th Anniversary. See photo gallery —pg. 10 , for complete coverage of this very special occasion. UK EXAM RESULTS ARE IN! Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 & Common Entrance examinations are a direct comparison of student academic performance with those in the UK state and independent system, at ages 7, 11 and 13, respectively. We are proud to announce that this year’s results are truly outstanding; and surpass the academic standards set by our British counterparts. At Key Stage 1 in Maths we achieved a 94% pass rate with 58% of pupils achieving ABOVE the age-expected level set for 7 year olds in the UK. In English Reading we had a 97% pass rate, with 67% of pupils scoring ABOVE age-expected level. In Writing 89% of pupils passed and 11% achieved ABOVE age-expected level. At Key Stage 2 we secured a100% pass rate in both Maths and English, with an impressive 54% and 66% of pupils achieving ABOVE the age-expected level for 11 year olds in UK, in Maths and English, respectively. At Common Entrance our pupils achieved the STRONGEST RESULTS IN OUR SCHOOL’S HISTORY! 94% of all papers written, across 7 different subjects received a grade of C or above, 57% of which earned a grade of A! Congratulations to all of our pupils and their Teachers on achieving these truly impressive results! Music & Dance Festival 4 Middle School Science Exhibition 5 Curriculum Carnival 6 Class 2—AU Day 7 Teacher of the Year F3 Work Placement 8 Sr Sch Debates Model UN Speech & Prize Giving 9 Thanksgiving & 10 Graduation Ceremony Reminders 14 CLASS TRIPS AND EXCURSIONS Reception Class visited the Planetarium as part of their lessons Knowledge and Understanding of the World. Class 4 visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, as an extension of their lessons in History. As part of their IT lessons, Form 1 visit the Meteorological Agency. Page 2 The Roman Ridge School Class 1 visit to Bojo Beach and Jamestown Beach, as part of their study of Beaches Old and New in History & Geography. Class 3 pupils visit Metro TV Newsdesk Building on their study of the Great Fire of London in History, Class 2 pupils paid a visit to the Ghana National Fire Service. Issue 3—Summer Term 2012 Page 3 MUSIC & DANCE FESTIVAL TRRS Students and Teachers put on quite a show for an enthusiastic audience of parents and friends, performing a number of musical and dance numbers that got us on our feet! This event marked the debut of our new School Band, which also performed at our Speech & Prize Giving Day and our Thanksgiving Service and Graduation Ceremony. Page 4 The Roman Ridge School MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE EXHIBITION After exams had finally come to an end, our Middle School students and teachers proudly hosted an exhibition of a variety of project work and scientific demonstrations. Exhibits on display included: Wind Energy, How to Make Electricity from a Lemon, Circuits, Solar System and Planets, Making Foam, Volcanic Eruptions, and much more! Thank you to our Science Department for organising this event! Issue 3—Summer Term 2012 Page 5 JUNIOR SCHOOL CURRICULUM CARNIVAL At the end of term, pupils in the Junior School hosted a Curriculum Carnival for their parents and friends. Each class provided a unique and exciting presentation based on one of the topics they studied this academic year. The morning’s festivities began with a beautiful rendition of ‘We Are the World,’ sung by all pupils, followed by impressive and informative demonstrations from each year group. An exciting morning of learning and fun—Congratulations, Junior School! Class 1: Solar System Class 3: Healthy Eating Class 2: Passport to the World Class 4: An Indian Village Reception: Children Around the World ‘We Are The World’ Page 6 The Roman Ridge School CLASS 2 CELEBRATES AFRICA UNITY DAY To mark Africa Unity Day, Class 2 pupils worked with their Teachers to create a memorable performance for their friends and parents at Junior School Assembly on Thursday 24 May 2012. They sang and displayed traditional African dress and jewellery, to commemorate this very special occasion. Well done, Class 2! 2ND ANNUAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR - MR. PETER OFORI-ATTA Our annual Teacher of the Year Award is a programme introduced by our Board of Directors and Academic Board of Governors, to recognise excellence in teaching and learning, and everything it is to be an educator at The Roman Ridge School! This year, candidates participated in a rigorous selection process, chaired by Nana Osim Kwatia II (Academic Board of Governors). After a very tight race, the Selection Committee announced this year’s winner, Mr. Peter OforiAtta, at our Speech & Prize Giving Ceremony and awarded prizes to our finalists and runners-up. From an original list of 21 candidates, our finalists for this year’s award are Ms. Gloria Awuku-Boateng (Class 2 Teacher) & Mrs. Viviane Sowah (Reception Teacher). Mr. Charles B. Akotua (English Teacher) was named Second Runner-Up and Mr. Thomas SarfoManu (Class 6 Teacher) our First Runner-Up. Our Teacher of the Year, Mr. Peter Ofori-Atta, receives a 3 week, all- expenses paid, working holiday to the UK and will visit a selection of UK independent and state schools in October 2012. Page 7 FORM 3 WORK PLACEMENT DAY On 19 June, our Form 3 students went to work! As part of our Guidance & Careers Counselling programme, students chose from a list of host organisations and spent the day observing and experiencing what a typical day in their chosen field is like. This programme seeks to expose students to the academic and practical requirements of their desired profession, as well as assist them to better understand the link between the subjects they study in school and their possible future careers. Many thanks to our host institutions for their kind participation: The African Regent Hotel, Vodafone Ghana, Citadel Clinic, Bethel Dental Clinic, Databank, GT Bank, Insel Communications, CharterHouse Productions, Labadi Beach Hotel, Lithur & Co.,Nature Conservation Research Centre, and GTG Energy. SENIOR SCHOOL DEBATES & ENGLISH QUIZ On 20-21 June 2012, our English Department hosted a series of activities and debates for our Senior School students. Form 3 East faced off against Form 3 West in a quiz competition. This was followed by exciting debates between Form 4 students (Motion: Ghana has achieved middle income status) and Lower Six students (Motion: Africa alone must be blamed for her food insufficiency). We eagerly await the rematch, which is set to take place next term! MODEL UNITED NATIONS Model UN is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. It helps to sharpen skills such as: public speaking, group communication, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing. The Roman Ridge School was recently featured on the Best Delegate website, covering our experiences and successes with Model UN last year. Over the course of the year, pupils worked closely with their Teachers to learn new things, develop skills and build the confidence they need to grow, achieve and pursue excellence in all that they do. Together, we celebrated their achievements and their journey, not only with awards and prizes, but also through various performances that showcased our children’s tremendous gifts and talents. Members of our Academic Board of Governors distributed prizes to pupils and we were honoured to have Mr. Geoffrey Allen (Founding Principal) close our programme with his inspirational words of wisdom. Adu, Jnr (Board of Directors, Chairman) On 26 June, we gathered together to celebrate the Graduating Class of 2012. The programme, entitled: Dream it. Believe it. Achieve it., began with a Thanksgiving Service in commemoration of our 10th Anniversary; giving thanks to God for our many and continued blessings. We were honoured to welcome our Board of Directors, Academic Board of Governors & Shareholders to the event and recognised their support and contributions to The Roman Ridge School over the last ten years. We also welcomed Rev. Father Ignatius (St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Aflao), a former member of TRRS staff, who led our Thanksgiving Service. Our Special Guests, Mr. Geoffrey Allen (Founding Principal) & Mrs. Amy Fafa Awoonor (Former Principal) each addressed the Graduating Class and shared inspiring words of wisdom and messages of encouragement, before finally presenting them with their certificates.
