DON ATION OF 0,50% OF Y OUR INC OME TAX
Your income tax can help Bianca. With no cost for you!
When you fill your tax declaration of 2011 you can direct 0,50% of your tax income
to help our animals. To do that you need to put our tax number - NIF 506 068 196 in the file 901 of the Square 9 of the Annex H in the Model 3.
The taxes we pay are destinated to finance public expenses. However, exceptionally,
according to the Law no 16 of 22nd of June 2001 the taxpayer can, without an
additional cost, direct 0,50% of his income tax in favour of non profit organisms of
social and humanitarian and legal persons of public utility.
Bianca, according to the Decree no 10298/2010 published in Diário da República (the
Journal of the Republic) 2nd Series, no 118 of 21st of June 2010 was awarded the
status of public utility.
This is why we are asking you to choose to direct 0,50% of your income tax to Bianca
whose animals need help so much.
After receiving the taxes the State sends the amount that the
taxpayers donated to the chosen institution. So the amount you
donate in 2011 from your tax on the income of 2010 will be received
by the Institution in 2011. And with no cost for you!

This month Gil was the volunteer
to talk. Check out in page 5!
On the 21st of March we are
celebrating the coming of spring
and the International Day of the
Tree.
Also in Bianca trees are very
important. They give shade during
the day and they constitute a
natural fencing. This is why a
donation of a tree is an important
donation for us. At the moment
we urgently need bamboos: they
will be used as a fence between
the "parks". We also need a plant
called "arruda" that drives the
mosquitos away.
As for February
happened:
here’s
what
On the 5th of February we had the
usual Let's Walk the Dog day. The
next one is on the 5th of March
and the next on 3rd of April.
Also on the 5th of February we
had a project with St Dominic's
school – over 20 children and
teenagers came with their parents
to walk the dogs. The day was
very successful! The next one will
be on 19th of March.
The weekends 12-13 and 19-20 of
February we have organized a
Food Collection in Pingo Doce in
Quinta do Conde - we would like
to thank Pingo Doce for this
opportunity!
And we are still proceeding with
work on the "parks" in the shelter!
In this section we present you the
animals that arrived to our Association
during February and are still with us.
Those that arrived in February but were
rehomed the same month are already in
the section of adopted animals.
Here are their stories:
Cotovia was found abandoned on the
street; Biscuit was also found on the
street and was crying of pain as he had
stones in his bladder, he was already
operated; Pocahontas and Anya were
found on the street and both are quite
scared, they must have been mistreated;
Nanuk was found on the street sick and
hungry; Cl arinha was found on the
street and she is only a puppy; J ava and
Philip were found on the street; Ofelia
and her 3 small pu ppies ( Orval,
Ollie an d Orbi s) were abandoned
overnight at the shelter; Inu sca was
found wandering on the street with a
wound on her head as if she was beaten
with a stick; Eye s was found with a
broken leg closed in an abandoned
factory, hungry and thirsty, she was
already operated; Havana was found hit
by a car and whoever pretended to
rescue her "lost" her twice as twice she
was found wandering streets of Sesimbra
with her broken leg in a cast; Eddie,
Edna and Emma are 3 puppies born in
the wild and taken into a temporary
home - now they are big enough to be
adopted, same for their mum, Tiffany;
Shakira's owner died and her family did
not want to keep the dog (but she is
going to a new home soon!); B ambin a,
Bethoven an d Biju are siblings born in
the wild from mum who is very scared
and no one manages to catch her; Maya
and Magda are two tiny sister whose
ex-owner was not responsible enough to
have their mother sterilized, but now he
will; the Cock er was found late night
near the shelter with a big tumor in his
mouth that took months to grow before
his owners decided to abandon him near
the shelter.
Jazz was adopted from Bianca to a good home two years ago. He lived there happily
for one year. Then his owners went on holidays and placed him in a dog hotel, a thing
that a responsible owner would do. The hotel however.... lost the dog. Two days into
her holidays the owner, being on another continent and without possibilities of quick
return, received a phone call from the hotel that the dog disappeared and they didn't
know where he was.
As it appeared later, the dog went out through the main gate without anyone paying
attention to him.
Bianca volunteers engaged an immediate search for Jazz and the owner joined as
soon as she could come back (the dog hotel did not get involved). The dog was
rumoured to had been seen here and there but they never managed to actually find
him. The owner put lots of ads on the Internet and papers in many places, cafes, cash
machines, bus stops, vet clinics, shops, supermarkets, anywhere you can imagine.
Some people seeing a similar dog on the street were calling her, she was always going,
but it was never him. Nearly 8 months have passed.... And then she received another
phone call from someone whose neighbors were feeding a stray dog similar to Jazz,
she went there and it was Jazz! Scared and fugitive, he was eating the food left for
him on the street and running away, no one could approach him. He did not recognize
his owner, he run away. He did not come back to this place for a few days but
eventually he came back. The women feeding him managed to direct him into a
closed area and there they caught him. He was very scared.
The owner came to get him and she took him back home. Once at home it was as if
the memory came back, he became immediately relaxed, went to his own bed,
recognized all the family members. Now he is safe at home. After 8 months on the
street.
Never give up. If you lost your dog, never stop looking and never stop advertising. Put
your ads everywhere where people go: bus stops, train stations, veterinary clinics, pet
shops, cash machines, cafes... A very important tool is

when you have lost or found a dog or a cat. There’s
also Facebook. But prevention is equally important: your dogs
should have a chip AND a badge with your telephone number.
Not everyone who finds a dog on the street will take it to the
vet to look for the chip. That's why the badge with telephone
number is also vital.
Gil is our first male volunteer to be presented in
this Newsletter. His work and testimony are
important because Gil with other male
volunteers simply represents the physical
strength of our shelter for the heavy work.
Moreover, his testimony is a proof of the reality
of the shelters in Portugal and it defies the
common belief that only women participate in
those causes; on the contrary - more and more
men join the struggle for the good of the
animals.
"I am Gil, I am 57 years old and I am married to Anabela. I live in the area of
Barreiro, work with graphic arts and spent my Saturdays in the shelter
with other volunteers to do whatever is needed to improve the quality of
life of our dog friends. Honestly, there is so much to do and every time
there are more tasks. Now we are facing an enormous work related to the
construction of parks for the dogs [see previous newsletter] so we could
move the dogs to the parks and take them of the chains. But I also
participate in adoption fairs and food campaigns, I take dogs to the vet
when they need....
I was "dragged" to Bianca by my wife who did not want to miss a single
Saturday. It became our routine to spend Saturdays in the shelter and in
fact it is really nice, regardless the cold, heat, rain - a day in the shelter
helping and working brings an enormous satisfaction and is spent in good
company of other friends volunteers who have the same objective: they
want to improve the life of our 4-legged animal friends and they love and
respect them as much as I do!
So I would like to invite other couples to participate in the shelter
activities, even if it is just to come and walk one or two dogs.... It is very
fulfilling and believe me, you come once, you end up coming back!!!"

WE NEED FOOD FOR DOGS AND
CATS!
Our dogs eat OVER 400 kg of food a
week.
The basis is dry food, but we also need
canned food to serve medication. Puppy
and Kitten food are also urgent!
WE NEED MEDICATIONS!
We need urgently Actidox, Ronaxan,
Vetmedin, Vibramicina (three boxes a
day),
Glucantime
and
Fortekor,
between others.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS for helping
...that tricolored cats are usually
female?!
This is due to their genetic nature.
According to researchers, the orange
color comes from a female chromosome,
which the male cats do not inherit.
The truth is only 1% of tricolor cats are
male and even so sterile. All the result of
a chromosomal abnormality!
On the other hand, all orange cats are
usually male.
…that there were dogs aboard the
Titanic?!
They were a total of 12 and belonged to
first class passengers! It is believed that
three of them have survived by boarding
the first lifeboats carrying so few people
that no one cared they were there!

WE NEED TEMPORARY FAMILIES
for cats (until adoption) and small
puppies (until they are vaccinated and
can go to the shelter).
Adoptions in our shelter: Every Saturday between 12 pm and 5 pm
Visit us and adopt an animal. Every animal is vaccinated, dewormed and has an electronic chip.
Adult females are all sterilized and some adult males castrated.
Adoption is done on the basis of an adoption contract.
