The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the first
Sunday at the 11:30 AM Mass (10:00 am during
Summer). No Baptisms are celebrated during Lent.
Parent preparation is required. The parent meeting for
Baptism is generally on the first Monday of the month
at 7:00 PM. Please call the Parish Office for more

will be made to see that your request is granted.
As a general rule, we encourage using “bulletin space”
instead of a separate insert whenever possible—–this
saves the cost of printing. The following guidelines
should be observed if an insert is necessary:A proposed
insert must be submitted for approval prior to bulletin
insertion weekend. Approved inserts must be delivered
by Thursday to the Parish Office.

Year of Mercy
Why do Catholics light prayer candles?
The Sight of burning votive candles -real or electronic - is
common in most Catholic churches. The candles are usually
placed before statues of saints or at shrines. But how did this
tradition get its start?
According to A Handbook of Catholic Sacramentals, by Ann
Ball (Our Sunday Visitor Books), the practice of lighting
candles in order to obtain some favor probably has its origins in
the custom of burning lights at the tombs of the martyrs in the
catacombs. The lights burned as a sign of solidarity with
Christians still on earth. Because the lights continually burned
as a silent vigil, they became known as vigil lights.
Vigil Lights (from the Latin vigilia, which means "waiting" or
"watching") are traditionally accompanied by prayers of
attention or waiting. Another common type of candle offering is
the votive light. Such an offering is indicative of seeking some
favor from the Lord or the saint before which the votive is
placed.
Lighting a candle is a way of extending one's prayer and
showing solidarity with the person on whose behalf the prayer
is offered.
After the 9/11 tragedy, lit candles figured prominently in a
televised concert affirming the power of goodness over the
darkness of evil. The symbolism was similar to the Catholic
custom of lighting candles as a form of prayer.

In the lighting of candles we remember and truly live the words
of Our Lord: "I am the Light of the World." In the lighting of
candles we not only pray, but our prayers become smaller
symbols of the One Light of Christ. In burning candles, our
prayers rise up to Heaven day and night; prayers for the saint's
intercession are also common because of their friendship with
God in Heaven. Saints are powerful intercessors. The lighting of
candles has been observed since the time of the early martyrs.

Mary, Mother of Mercy
Mary’s role as Mother of Mercy continues today and is
evidenced in many Marian Apparitions, some as recent as 100
years ago. In the 1500’s Our Lady of Guadalupe came with
mercy for the Aztecs. The Aztec priests kept their people in
submission, bordering on terror, by offering human sacrifices
to their gods. To give an example of the scale of human
sacrifices being made, upon the consecration of the temple at
Tenochtitlan, 80,000 human sacrifices were made in just four
days. Mary appeared to Juan Diego saying, “I greatly desire
that a church be built in my honor, in which I will show my
love, compassion, and protection. I am your Mother full of
mercy and love for you and all those who love me, trust in me,
and have recourse to me. I will hear their complaints and I will
comfort their affliction and their sufferings. So that I might
show all my love, go now to the bishop in Mexico City and tell
him that I am sending you to make known to him the great
desire I have to see a church dedicated to me built here." The
church was built and within nine years of the apparitions of
Our Lady of Guadalupe, 9 million Aztecs had converted to
Christianity!
Marian apparitions also show that Mary has mercy on the souls
of sinners and asks for people to pray and do penance for them
to save them from going to hell. When she appeared at
Lourdes in the 1800’s, Mary asked St. Bernadette to join her in
praying for mercy saying, “Penance! Penance! Pray to God for
sinners. Kiss the ground as an act of penance for sinners!”
And when she appeared in Fatima to Blessed Jacinta, Blessed
Francisco and Blessed Lucia in 1917, she asked them to join
her in praying and sacrificing for the conversion of sinners to
receive her Son’s mercy, to pray that they be “saved from the
fires of hell” and that “all souls be brought to heaven,
especially those in most need of [God’s] mercy.” She asked
them to have everyone consecrate themselves to her
Immaculate Heart so that their heart might be like hers, full of
mercy, full of grace, and enter into her own fiat and triumph.
Her mission of mercy continues!

Rosary Relay for Priests
The St. Pius X Vocations Ministry invites you to join your prayers to the prayers of
millions throughout the world on Friday June 3, 2016 as we participate in
WorldPriest’s Annual Global Rosary Relay at St. Pius X’s Shrine of Mary
Immaculate Queen of the Universe. The rosary will begin promptly at 6:30 pm.
We will be receiving the rosary “baton” from the Shrine of Our Lady of the Cape
in Quebec, Canada, then passing it on to three shrines: Our Lady Star of the Sea in
NY, Maria Immaculada in Columbia, and Grotto of the Redemption in Iowa. You

The Annual Global Rosary Relay idea is a simple one. Each of the participating
shrines in 50+ countries prays a particular mystery of the Rosary at a particular half
hour on the day in thanksgiving to God for our priests and to implore the protection
and loving care of Our Lady, Mother of all priests, for all her priestly sons. With
the coming of midnight on June 3rd, the entire world, by then, will have been
encircled in prayer for our priests on this—The Annual Rosary Relay Day.
This is an opportunity for us to raise our hearts to God for all priests in the
exercise of their ministry; that they will be blessed, through our prayers, with
God's grace for their priesthood; that in this worldwide communion of prayer
for them, they may experience our gratitude and support; and finally that
they will persevere in unity with Christ and his Church and shepherd the
Lord's flock to the safe pastures of his Kingdom.
Please come and join us in prayer for 30 minutes as we pray for our own
Fr. George, all priests in our Diocese and throughout the world, newly ordained seminarians, and all discerning a vocation to the

St. Pius X Youth Ministry
Chicago Trip
On Monday, June 6, from 10:30 am-6:30 pm, the youth
group is going on a Chicago Trip. We'll meet at Pius at
10:30 am, carpool to the Lombard train station, take the train to
the city, go to Mass at St. Peter's, go out to lunch, and then go
to Navy Pier for their Fun-House Maze and games: Time Freak
and Atomic Rush. We'll be back at Pius by 6:30 pm. The cost is
$20 + money for lunch per student; chaperones go for free.
Forget Me Not Days
On Friday, June 10, from 1-3:30 pm, the youth group will be
collecting donations and passing out Forget Me Not seed
packets at the Jewel in Villa Park to raise money for the
Alzheimer's Association. Please meet at Pius at 1 pm for
carpooling and we will be back by 3:30 pm.

Catholic Charities’ Mobile Food Pantry
Catholic Charities’ Mobile Food Pantry will be distributing
food in the church parking lots on the date and location as
listed below (rain or shine). Catholic Charities and the
Northern Illinois Food Bank have partnered to deliver
nutritious food (meat, produce and nonperishable items) to
people in need.
Participants are asked to bring bags, laundry baskets, boxes,
carts or wagons to transport food and grocery products through
the line and back to their vehicles. A representative from
Catholic Charities will be available at this event to explain
additional services provided by the agency. You do not have
to be Catholic to participate. Catholic Charities helps people
of all faiths and beliefs. For more information about Catholic
