Thuringian Three Towers Trail
Kaatschen-Weichau. Nearly every village and
town has its own sights or distinctive features to
offer. A piece of advice: give yourself enough
time to be able to discover all these gems for
yourself and to appreciate the Thuringian hospitality – as well as the local food and wine of
course! Maybe the best reason to try out this
cycle route is Goethe, who explored this countryside intensively, drawing both scientific and poetic inspiration from it. His traces are everywhere
you go. Each section of the route has its own particular charms – and the Ilm even has its own
microclimate.
Following the former narrow-gauge
railway line, the 46km Laura Cycle
Route completes the link between
the Ilm Valley Cycle Route near
Weimar and the Unstrut Cycle Route near Sömmerda. Far from mass tourism, all the gems survive,
tucked away in this idyllic region: the rural customs,
age-old village churches, half-timbered farmsteads, windmills on the edge of town, ancient linden trees and woad stones. Traditions centred on
the potato continue to be celebrated in the area
surrounding Thuringian Dumpling World in Heichelheim. An annual highlight is the Heichelheim
Potato Festival at the beginning of September.
Other must-see attractions include the castle of the
Teutonic order in Liebstedt, the 'tirica' theme park
and Leutenthal's 'Mechanika da Vinci' exhibition.
A treat not to be missed is the
Thuringian Three Towers Trail,
which has been awarded the
Wanderbares Deutschland seal of
approval from the German Ramblers' Association.
The 26km trail enables you to explore the landscapes and cultural attractions of this walking
region situated to the south of Weimar, the home
of classicism. Following a circular route, it links
Bad Berka's Pauline Tower, the Hain Tower near
Weimar and the Caroline Tower on Kötschberg hill
near Blankenhain. Enjoy outstanding views across
the surrounding countryside and seek inspiration
from the combination of nature, the arts, learning
and Thuringian heritage.

Nature, history and culture –
a veritable feast of things to see
and do on the 125km Ilm Valley
Cycle Route, which goes through
small villages with enchanting churches and past
captivating manor houses, castles, museums and
mills. Many of the route's attractions in Weimar,
home of classicism, are listed as UNESCO World
Heritage sites. The scenery on offer is just as varied: forests, meadows and pastureland float past
as the route winds its way along the river
meadow. The Ilm Valley Cycle Route follows the
blue ribbon of the Ilm from its source in the
Thuringian Forest, through Stützerbach, right up
to its confluence with the river Saale near

The 225km Towns of Thuringia Cycle
Route extends right across the Free
State of Thuringia, linking seven of
the region's prettiest towns between
Eisenach in the west and Altenburg in the east.
Along the way, you can explore the delightful nature of this densely forested region. It begins in Altenburg, the town where the card game skat is said
to have originated, and passes Gera before it reaches
Jena, a 'City of Science'. A visit to the world's oldest
planetarium should not be missed. The route then
continues on to Weimar, the home of classicism,
where famous figures such as Bach, Goethe, Schiller,
Liszt and Cranach all lived and worked. In Thuringia's
capital Erfurt, the sights awaiting you include the
Merchants' Bridge (Krämerbrücke) with houses all
along its length, the Petersberg Fortress, the Church
of St. Severus and Luther's Augustinian monastery.
The next section of the route takes you past the Drei
Gleichen castles to the former ducal town of Gotha.
Finally, you'll reach Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO
World Heritage site, in the west. It towers over the
town of Eisenach and is where Saint Elisabeth lived,
Luther translated the New Testament and Wagner
found inspiration for his opera Tannhäuser.

Feininger Cycle Trail
This route of around 30km gives
you the chance to trace Lyonel
Feininger's progress around the
Weimarer Land region, whilst getting to know some of the artist's influences and
admiring a host of cultural landmarks. Feininger
himself was a keen cyclist and always took his
pencil and sketchpad whenever he ventured out.
Explore at your leisure the charming villages to the
south of Weimar within the Middle Ilm Valley conservation area – a favourite haunt of Feininger's
on foot or by bike between 1906 and 1937.
You are, after all, in Feininger country. The wellsignposted cycle trail begins in Weimar, at 8
Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse, the main building of
the Bauhaus University, where Feininger taught
from 1919 to 1925. There are large glass display
panels at each stopping point, which for the most
part show a Feininger painting of a particular
church, with a grandstand view of the radiant
original.

Goethe Trail – from Weimar
to Grosskochberg
The Goethe Trail leads walkers
through 28km of charming countryside from Weimar to Grosskochberg
and its castle. From 1775 to 1788
the young poet often hiked to the castle 'beyond
the mountains' to visit his fiancée, Charlotte von
Stein. The trail starts at Wielandplatz in Weimar.
The well-signposted trail, with letterboxes and
stamps at various wayside points, leads ramblers
through richly varied scenery, charming villages
and magnificent beech and conifer woods. The
many places of interest along the route include
Buchfart's historical mill and unique hilltop castle,
Neckeroda (the village of dyes), Luisenturm tower
and Kochberg Castle – one of the jewels in
Thuringia's crown. Goethe noted that it took him
two and a half hours to make the journey on
horseback. Walkers should allow themselves six to
eight hours. Benches, picnic areas and traditional
taverns invite you to take a breather along the
way. Every year on the May Day weekend, there is
a traditional procession along the Goethe Trail,
starting at Weimar, Bad Berka or Blankenhain and
ending up at Grosskochberg.

More than 200 years have now
passed since the twin battles of
Jena and Auerstedt in 1806. The
Napoleon Cycle Trail and Footpath
are the ideal way to combine walking with history. The trails, peppered with numerous memorial stones, monuments and other points of
interest, link up the memorials in Jena-Cospeda,
Hassenhausen, Kapellendorf and Auerstedt
amongst others – sites that keep the memory of
the 1806 battle alive. Carefully prepared display
boards present a wealth of information on the
historical events, tales and legends that have entwined themselves around these places. Unspoilt
scenery awaits you – plus a view of the battlefield that once spread itself out before Napoleon
Bonaparte, General von Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen,
Field Marshal Wilhelm Ferdinand – Duke of
Brunswick, and Marshal Louis Nicolas Davout.
