ll true connoisseurs of the Istrian peninsula know
very well how charming this area can be in the autumn-winter months... The excitement of the summer
has dwindled and has been replaced with the jubilant
expectation of a true explosion of scents, tastes and colours.
Without fail, the secret hedonism that lurks within all of us
rises to the surface and wants to taste as many of the elixirs
that have been generated and discovered by the mind, soul and
body as possible. The word elixir is the only one that can be
used here because how else can we describe the Istrian countryside that enchants with its colourful, intoxicating wines that
are being created or are maturing, or the dishes made by fresh
autumnal produce that are etched deeply into our memories.
Then there is the truffle, this cherished morsel from the Istrian
forests, which sits majestically on its imaginary throne. Weeks
and weeks of celebrations, events, manifestations, culinary exhibitions are dedicated to it, and at the same time its faithful
followers – those who taste it – write eulogies about it.

beautiful sights and experiences that life can give you. With a

A resting place for the antique rulers
T
he turbulent history of Umag, a small town on the far north western coast of Istria, is still visible today in the architecture of the
town’s old part. In addition, the archaeological sites along the
coast and the surrounding areas conceal many interesting historical tales.
Katoro and Sipar offer just a few of them...
Luxurious villas or ‘villae rusticae’ were once found in the area that
is now the site of the Sol Polynesia and Sol Stella Maris Resorts, as
well as the hotels’ Sol Aurora and Sol Coral. It is a known fact that
Antique Roman noble families discovered this area and built their summer residences here. Evidence of this has been found in the remains of
numerous Roman villas that were situated right along the sea’s edge.
Archaeological digs, especially on the coast, have unearthed tombs and
a whole series of Antique objects such as coins, the remains of tools,
amphora’s, statues, monuments... The floors of these villas were covered
in coloured mosaics and according to some remnants and legends, the
roofs were covered in copper sheets or red tiles. At sunset, these roofs
would shine in a way that made them look like they had been gilded,
and it is precisely because of this reason that the entire area is called
Katoro (ca’do’oro = golden house).

mag, eine Stadt im Nordwesten Istriens, dessen turbulente
Geschichte heute noch an der Architektur der Altstadt und
Fundorten entlang der Küste sichtbar ist, versteckt in seiner Umgebung viele interessante Geschichten aus der Vergangenheit.
Katoro und Sipar sind nur einige davon...
Dort, wo heute die Siedlungen Sol Polynesia und Sol Stella Maris sowie die Hotels Sol Aurora und Sol Coral stehen, befanden sich einst
prächtige Villen – die Villae Rusticae. Bekannt ist, dass das römische
Adel dieses Gebiet entdeckt und dort seine Sommerresidenzen gebaut
hat. Davon zeugen Reste zahlreicher römischer Villen in Meeresnähe.
Vor allem entlang der Küste wurden viele Grabsteine und eine ganze
Reihe römischer Gegenstände wie Münzen, Werkzeuge, Amphoren,
Statuen, Monumente ausgegraben.... Der Boden der Villen war mit bunten Mosaiksteinen bedeckt und Dächer, den Spuren und Überlieferungen
nach, mit Kupferblech oder roten Pfeilern. Bei Sonnenuntergang sahen die Dächer golden aus und es wird geglaubt, dass man gerade
deswegen diesem Gebiet den Namen Katoro gegeben hat (ca’ d’oro
= goldenes Haus).

After Siparis started its increasing decay, the
population moved to the island – today’s Umag.
Nachdem Siparis immer mehr verfallen ist, siedelten seine
Einwohner auf die Insel um – die heutige Stadt Umag.
The area between the Cape of Katoro and the Cape of Sipar did not
only have villas belonging to wealthy people, since there were also rural houses with farmsteads, whose inhabitants engaged in agriculture,
crafts, fishing and trade. They would sell their products to merchants,
which would then be transported by boat to other places. A large port
was needed for this purpose. This is how the settlement Sepomaia came
into existence, which stretched between the Cape of Katoro and the
Cape of Sipar. These former sailing routes ran down the length of the
coast, and goods were transported only during the day. At night and
during storms they would hide in the ports and harbours. That’s how
it was in Katoro.
The arrival of settlers in this area reaches far back into history, since
there were settlers here even before the Romans. The settlement first
had a name with Celtic roots – Sepomaia. The Romans later renamed
the settlement Siparis. Due to the many dangers that threatened them,
the people of Siparis had to frequently leave their homes: there were

Zwischen den Landeszungen Katoro und Sipar gab es außer Villen auch
Bauernhäuser mit Land, dessen Bewohner Landbearbeiter, Handwerker,
Fischer und Händler waren. Ihre Ware haben sie an Händler weiterverkauft, die sie dann mittels Schiffen in andere Gebiete transportiert haben. Aus diesem Grund hat man einen größeren Hafen gebraucht. So entstand zwischen diesen zwei Vorgebirgen die Siedlung
Sepomaia. Frühere Wasserstraßen führten entlang der Küste, die Ware
wurde nur tagsüber transportiert. Nachts und bei Unwetter wurden
die Schiffe in größeren und kleineren Häfen abgestellt. So ist es auch
im heutigen Katoro.
Die Besiedlung dieses Gebietes liegt weit in der Vergangenheit.
Sogar in der Zeit vor den Römern gab es hier eine Siedlung, die den
Namen keltischer Herkunft trug – Sepomaia. Später gaben ihr die
Römer den Namen Siparis. Da zahlreiche Gefahren wie Piraten- oder
Feindenüberfälle, Erdbeben und Barbareneinbrüche drohten, mußten
die Sipraner ihre Siedlung mehrmals verlassen. Sobald die Gefahr

repeated attacks by pirates, attacks by a variety of different enemies,
earthquakes, and constant robberies by barbarians. However, when these
dangers passed they would always return and reconstruct the town and
its walls. This happened all the way up to 876 A.D., until the time when
pirates from Neretva under the leadership of Duke Domagoj raided the
town. Siparis started to decline more and more, and its inhabitants moved
to an island – today’s Umag. Whilst other towns on the west coast of Istria
slowly recovered, Siparis never did. History continues to live in many of
these settlements, although they are still shrouded in great secrecy....And
in order to help you discover some of them, we have organised Antique
Workshops in Sol Polynesia. If you visit during July and August you can
actively participate in discovering the traditions from past times... A great
surprise awaits you at the beginning of August – travel back in time to
the era of the ancient Romans. During the Sepomaia viva festival, the entire old part of the city of Umag transforms into an ancient Roman town:
costumes, cooking, dancing...the ancient Romans come alive again.

von Fürst Domagoj die Stadt in Trümmer legten. Die Stadt verfiel
immer mehr und die Bewohner zogen auf die Insel, die heutige Stadt
Umag. Andere Besiedlungen in Westistrien erholten sich von den
Überfällen, aber Siparis nie.
Obwohl von einem Geheimnis umhüllt, lebt an vielen Orten die
Geschichte weiter... Um Ihnen bei der Entdeckung dieser Orte behilflich zu sein, organisieren wir für Sie Werkstätte über die Antike.
Wenn Sie im Juli oder August Umag besuchen, können Sie auch aktiv an der Entdeckung alter Sitten teilnehmen. Anfang August wartet eine große Überraschung auf Sie – eine Zeitreise durch die Zeit
der Römer! Denn während des Festivals Sepomaia viva verwandelt
sich die ganze Altstadt von Umag in eine antike römische Stadt und
Kostüme, Küche, Tänze... der alten Römer erleben wieder.

Geschichte, Liebe und alles, was das Leben ausmacht...

ystic and magnificent, alone on the rocks like some
forgotten giants, lighthouses have always been a
subject of fascination. Many of them are surrounded by numerous stories and myths that make them
seem even more secretive. Some, such as the one on the island of
Pharos at Alexandria have become legends, but each one whose
light breaks up the dark represents a symbol of hope and a safe
harbour. Previously intended only for sailors, but nowadays also
for all those who maddened by the bustle of the everyday life
want to experience the charms of adventure tourism.
Savudrija lighthouse was built in 1818 and today is the oldest
active lighthouse in the Adriatic, as well as the most northern
in Croatia. This 36 metre high building is totally consistent with
the mysterious atmosphere that has surrounded lighthouses for
centuries – and this one also has a legend… Local stories often connect the Savudrija lighthouse with the sad story of the
Austrian Count Metternich who apparently fell in love with a
beautiful Croatian lady at a ball in Vienna. He built the lighthouse and the house beside it just for her. Unfortunately, fate

der Faszination. Viele davon kennzeichneten zahlreiche Geschichten und Mythen, die sie so geheimnisvoll erscheinen lassen… Manche sind Teil einer Legende, wie der
Leuchtturm von Alexandria auf der Insel Pharos, doch jeder drängt
sich mit seiner Helligkeit durch die Dunkelheit und stellt somit
ein Symbol der Hoffnung und eines sicheren Asyls dar. Früher
für Seefahrer, zur heutigen Zeit auch für diejenigen, die aus dem
Alltagsstress fliehen und die Faszination des Abenteuertourismus
ausprobieren möchten…
Der Leuchtturm Savudrija wurde 1818 errichtet und ist somit
der älteste aktive Leuchtturm an der Adria, gleichzeitig auch der
nördlichste im Gebiet Kroatiens. Das 36 m hohe Gebäude bleibt
seiner mystischen Atmosphäre treu, die seit Jahrhunderten um
den Leuchtturm kreist und eine eigene Legende hat… Lokale
Geschichten, meist über den Leuchtturm Savudrija, verbinden eine
traurige Liebe des österreichischen Grafen Metternich, der sich angeblich auf dem Wiener Opernball in eine wunderschöne kroatiWINTER 2008/09. No.02
cruelly saw to it that the Count’s chosen one died of a serious
illness and she never saw the light at the lighthouse, the pledge
of their love and their unused love nest. Totally in despair, Count
Metternich decided never to visit the lighthouse again, and some
people swear that still today in the empty rooms you can hear the
footsteps of the desperate lover in search of his dearest...
Whether this is true or not, this legend is not the only interesting point about Savudrija lighthouse. An interesting and totally authentic fact is that it was the first lighthouse in the world
whose light comes from gas that is produced by distilled coal,
which came from a coal mine in the Labin area. In the eventuality of a breakdown of the gas instillation, oil could be used to
produce light.
The lighthouse was designed by the architect Pietro Nobile on
the basis of an order from the Triestine ‘Deputazione di borsa’,
and was sponsored by the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I. This
is mentioned on the inscription at the base of the building. Local
stone from the nearby coast was used in the construction of the
building, and the lighthouse’s roof is covered in tiles that weigh

die Auserwählte des Grafen an einer schweren Krankheit versterben, ohne das Licht des Leuchtturms jemals gesehen zu haben.
Vollkommen verzweifelt entschied sich der Graf Metternich, den
Leuchtturm nie wieder zu besuchen, und manche behaupten sogar,
dass man heute noch durch die leeren Räume die Schritte des verzweifelten Verliebten hören kann, der seine Liebste sucht…
Sei es die Wahrheit oder nicht, ist die Legende jedoch nicht die
einzige interessante Geschichte, die sich auf den Leuchtturm
Savudrija bezieht. Interessant ist auch die Tatsache, dass es der
erste Leuchtturm der Welt ist, der für seine Beleuchtung Gas benutzt hat, das durch die Kohledestination hergestellt wurde, angeliefert aus dem Steinkohlebergwerk aus dem Gebiet um Labin.
Im Falle eventueller Schäden an den Gasinstallationen wurde eine
alternative Lösung ermöglicht, so dass für die Beleuchtung auch
Öl benutzt werden konnte.
Das Projekt des Leuchtturms erstellte der Architekt Pietro Nobile
anhand einer Bestellung der Triester ‘Deputazione di Borsa’ und

The inhabitants of Trieste had an enormous interest in building the
lighthouse, so that they could have safe passage when they were
sailing into the port of Trieste. The lighthouse can be seen from
Opicina, above Trieste, and was an important element in communications – they called the ships that were waiting to sail into
the port by flags, which left enough time to carry out the preparations that were needed to moor the ships… The lighthouse was
first lit in 1818, in the presence of the Emperor himself during
one of his travels in the area.
It is a known fact that due to the general inaccessibility of lighthouses, as well as the difficult work that is needed to continually
support their system, lighthouse keepers had to give up many
of life’s benefits and be in excellent psychological and physical
condition. They had to be the personification of someone who
is of strong character, since they often lived a lonely and isolated experience. The first lighthouse keepers at Savudrija were
Stefano Schmidt and Bartolomeo Micala, and in 1828 they were
replaced by Giovanni Giacomo Maurel from a Savudrija family

Das Dach des Leuchtturms wurde mit Ziegeln überdacht, die sogar
70 kg wiegen und den stärksten Stürmen standhalten.
Für die Triester war die Errichtung des Leuchtturms sehr von
Interesse, und zwar wegen einer sichereren Schifffahrt zum Triester
Hafen. Der Leuchtturm ist nämlich von Opicina oberhalb von Trieste
sichtbar und stellte ein wichtiges Kommunikationselement dar – mit
kleinen Flaggen wurden Schiffe angekündigt, die den Hafen ansteuerten, wodurch man ausreichend Zeit hatte, um das Anlegen vorzubereiten. An der ersten Anzündung des Leuchtturms nahm sogar der
Kaiser selbst teil, der damals auf der Durchreise gewesen ist.
Es ist bekannt, dass aufgrund der Unzugänglichkeit des Leuchtturms
und der schweren Arbeit an der ständigen Systeminstandhaltung
die Leuchtturmwächter auf viele Wohltaten des Lebens verzichten
und in ausgezeichneter psycho-physischer Form sein mussten sowie
starke Personen mit festem Charakter verkörpern mussten, was oft
zu ihrer Vereinsamung und Isolation führte… Die ersten Savudrijer

modern electronics slowly resulted in the demise the lighthouse
keeper’s job, and currently only one lighthouse keeper is working at the Savudrija lighthouse.
Today the lighthouse on the Savudrija headland is an interesting
part of what is on offer to those tourists who come to Croatia
for lighthouse holidays, which count 11 impressive refuges. The
lighthouse itself is not isolated, since it can be easily reached by
car and is found at the heart of the tourist destination. Provisions
are regular, and a restaurant and well tended beaches can be found
nearby. It is surrounded by a garden filled with Mediterranean
vegetation and a high wall, and also it has its own parking area.
There is a four bedroom apartment within the lighthouse itself.
It is the perfect choice for all those who want a different type
of summer holiday… Although it is not totally isolated and inaccessible, the Savudrija lighthouse does, nevertheless, offer
its own peace and mystic charm, just as all the lighthouses in
the world do… It is ready to talk about the rich history of the
Umag-Savudrija area, almost two centuries old…

aus einer Savudrijer Familie ersetzt wurde. Die Entwicklung der
Elektronik und Automatik führte zum Aussterben des Berufes, momentan arbeitet an der Instandhaltung des Leuchtturms Savudrija
lediglich ein Leuchtturmwächter.
Der Leuchtturm des Kaps Savudrija ist heute Teil des interessanten kroatischen Touristenangebots für einen Urlaub im Leuchtturm,
wovon es sogar 11 interessante Exemplare gibt. Der Leuchtturm
ist nicht isoliert, er ist mit dem Auto leicht erreichbar und befindet sich im Zentrum einer Touristenzone. Er wird von einem
Garten mit mediterranen Pflanzen umzingelt und verfügt über einen Parkplatz. Unterhalb des eigentlichen Leuchtturms befindet
sich ein Vierbettapartment. Die richtige Wahl für diejenigen, die
eine andere Art des Urlaubs suchen… Auch wenn er nicht komplett vereinsamt und unerreichbar ist, dennoch bietet er Ruhe und
Mystik, was für alle Leuchttürme der Welt kennzeichnend ist…

When a place becomes the favoured destination for the preparations of first league football teams,
it is clear that in the development of the most important secondary things in the world much money
and effort has been invested…Today after extensive investments in the building of a new pitch that
has the latest generation artificial turf and lighting, the renovation of the existing grounds, and in the
accommodation and services in the Umag area, there are now 10 football pitches on offer that in terms
of their quality are some of the best in this part of Europe! The Umag football complex has a stadium
that is licensed for all match levels, and it seems from the announcements that have been made about
additional investments that the people of Umag are not thinking of stopping here! As a result, it is not
a surprise that world famous football players, members of national teams, trainers, and selectors can
be seen on the streets of Umag …Recently, Zorislav Srebrić, the secretary of the Croatian Football
Association confirmed that Umag offers the best conditions in Croatia for football training! Has the time
come that football is getting very close to taking the throne that is held by tennis in Umag?

Wenn ein Ort zur Lieblingsdestination für Vorbereitungen der Fußballerstligisten wird, ist klar, dass
in die Entwicklung der beliebtesten Nebenbeschäftigung der Welt außer viel Mühe auch viele Mittel
investiert worden sind. Heute, nach vielen Investierungen in den Bau eines neuen Sportplatzes mit
der neusten Generation des Kunstrasens und Beleuchtung, Renovierung der schon vorhandenen
Plätze, der Unterkunftsplätze und Leistungen, sind im Gebiet von Umag sogar 10 Fußballplätze
zu finden, die ihrer Qualität nach zu den besten in Europa gehören. Zum Umager Fußballkomplex
gehören Stadien, die für alle Spielniveaus lizenziert sind, und es wurde schon angekündigt, dass

Fußballspieler, Nationalspieler, Trainer, Nationalmannschaftstrainer treffen kann. Neulich bestätigte
selbst der Sekretär der kroatischen Fußballbundes, Herr Zorislav Srebrić, dass Umag die besten
Bedingungen für Fußballvorbereitungen in Kroatien bietet. Ist die Zeit gekommen, dass sich Fußball

Rarely does a destination offer so many possibilities for sport,
either for fun or professionally, as Umag does, and therefore it
is not a surprise that it has been called the town of sport for a
number of years. It is an oasis of sports tourism and relaxation.
One of the main reasons why it has got this image is because
of the ATP Croatia Open tournament, which in 2009 will celebrate a significant jubilee – 20 years of existence! The Umag
tournament is one of the most attractive global ATP International
Series tournaments for men, and is responsible for the development of the many tennis schools, camps and tennis tournaments in the Umag area. Today, the town has 60 modern tennis
courts and also an impressive ITC tennis centre.
Selten bietet ein Urlaubsort wie Umag so viele Möglichkeiten
der sportlichen oder ähnlichen Vorbereitungen. So wundert es
nicht, dass Umag seit Jahren die Stadt des Sports – eine Oase
des Sporttourismus- und Urlaubs, genannt wird. Am meisten
trug diesem Image das ATP Croatia Open Turnier bei, das
2009 ein wichtiges Jubiläum feiert – seinen 20. Geburtstag!
Das Turnier von Umag gehört in der Klasse der Internatioal
series der ATP-Organisation zu einem der attraktivsten professionellen Männerturniere der Welt. Von großer Bedeutung ist
er für die Entwicklung zahlreicher Tennisschulen, Camps und
Turniere im Umaggebiet, das mit 60 modernen Tennisplätzen
und beeindruckendem Tenniszentrum protzen kann.

But tennis is not Umag’s only ace! In an almost unbelievable set of lucky natural circumstances, true sporting adventures can be had on the land, sea and air or underground,
on the coast and the undulating inland area, on two or four
wheels, by foot or on a horse … and thanks to the temperate climate, this is almost for the whole year round! Those
who are less interested in tennis can try football, badminton,
handball, basketball, volleyball, bowling, horse riding, bike
riding on trails, sailing, water skiing, rowing, diving, jogging, hunting, fishing, cave adventures, Nordic walking…all
of the sports that are available in Umag and its surrounding
area have an extremely well-developed infrastructure and
accompanying services!

wahre sportliche Abenteuer auf dem Land, Meer, in der Luft,

A particularly amazing point is the philosophy that drives
Umag’s development as a sporting destination. It gives all
of the aforementioned sports an added value, which is the
result of the town’s effort to affirm itself as a stimulating
centre that focuses individuals (especially young people)
on sport and leading a good quality life style. Over the last
few years, a series of symposia, competitions and expert
camps have been held that have covered a variety of topics about physical exercise and competitive sport.

aktiviert 90% der Körpermuskulatur. Die meisten Gebiete sind für diese Sportart
geeignet aber selten sind sie so malerisch wie die 45 Kilometer lange Umag
Riviera. Obwohl Nordic Walking auf den ersten Blick leicht aussieht, sehr wichtig
ist die Beherrschung der Grundtechnik und die Auswahl der richtigen Stäbe. Im
Umag müssen Sie sich darum keine Sorgen machen. Ausgezeichnete Traininge,
Anfängerschulen, Stabausleihe… und eine Natur, die den Atem raubt… Was man
noch braucht, ist der gute Wille und der Wunsch, den Tag gesund anzufangen!
An up-close glimpse
19th ATP tournament Studena Croatia Open 2008 in Umag passed in its standard grandiose
style. It began with the magnificent concert by the croatian pop star Aki Rahimovski at the
central Stella Maris stadium, opening a week full of top-quality tennis and good fun. All
through the ATP week, the evening events were marked by concerts by Gustafi, Luka Nižetić,
TBF, Neno Belan, Tony Lee King, traditional beauty pageant for MISS Hostess, fun till dawn
in a cocktail bar…. The tournament itself, after the exciting matches between some of the
best tennis players of the world, finished with the longest finals in the history of Umag ATP
tournament (170 min!). It featured a Spanish tennis player Fernando Verdasco and a Russian
indoor pool, and wellness centre that, amongst other things, offer revitalization after tiring training and a variety of activities.
The fact that the town is focused on offering sports tourism is
best shown in the interesting point that the hotels offer special
menus adapted for sports players and those who want to keep
fit, which are based on the recommendations of sports doctors
and trainers.

Das 19. ATP Turnier Studena Croatia Open 2008 von Umag verlief standardmäßig mit großem
Stil. Alles begann mit einem Konzert der kroatischen Pop Stars Aki Rahimovski auf dem
Zentralstadion von Stella Maris, wodurch eine Woche mit erstklassigem Tennis und guter
Unterhaltung eröffnet wurde. Die Abendevents um die ATP Woche herum wurden durch
Schwimmbäder, Wellnesszentren, die unter anderem nach anstrengenden Trainingen und Aktivitäten Revitalisierungsprogramme
anbieten. Über Umags Orientierung am Sporttourismus sprechen
am besten die Hotelküchen, die ein spezielles, von Sportärzten
und Trainern empfohlenes Menü anbieten, für Sportler und diejenigen, die fit bleiben möchten.

Das eigentliche Turnier endete nach der Revue aufregender Exemplare der zum Teil besten
Tennisspieler der Welt mit dem längsten Finale in der Geschichte des ATP Turniers von Umag
(170 Min.!), und zwar zwischen dem Spanier Fernando Verdasco und dem Russen Igor Andreev,
wobei letztendlich Verdasco triumphierte. Dem Sieger wurde der Pokal vom Präsidenten der
Republik Kroatien Stjepan Mesić überreicht, und alles endete nach gutem altem Brauch mit
einem spektakulären Feuerwerk.

der Zauberer von Umag
T
here are only a few people who have introduced the world to the
name of Umag to the same extent as Lino Červar, the trainer of
the Croatian national handball team. His tears of joy, his anger,
his gesticulations or serenity, are images that on the television
go hand in hand with the handball matches. His familiar face in these
moments enters homes throughout the world. Handball fans from all over
the globe are fascinated by the lucid ideas of this man from Umag, who
so proudly represents his region and his homeland of Croatia.
Of course, handball is the first association made about Lino, mainly
because of the success of the Croatian handball national team that he
leads as its trainer and selector. Together with his lads, and, as he always points out, as a result of their gruelling work and sacrifices, they
made it to the Olympics. These trophies are closely associated with this
magician from Umag. His unique relationship with handball, which is
in the soul of each true fan of this sport, creates the impression that
he is constantly out of synch and in conflict with himself. Sometimes
people get the feeling that handball is his greatest enemy and at the
same time his greatest friend, so that at the same time he loves and

Seine Freudentränen, sein Ärger, seine Körpersprache oder Ruhe,
sind Fernsehbilder, die unausbleiblich die Handballspiele begleiten. In diesen Momenten haust sein erkennbares Gesicht in jedem Haushalt
weltweit. Dieser ‘Umager’, der mit Stolz seine Gegend und seine Heimat
Kroatien hervorhebt, fasziniert alle Handballfans weltweit mit seinen klaren Ideen.
Die erste Assoziation zu Lino ist natürlich der Handball, meistens wegen
des Erfolges der kroatischen Handballmannschaft, mit ihm als Trainer an
der Spitze. Er ist gemeinsam mit seinen Jungs in, wie er immer hervorhebt, mühsamer Arbeit und auf vieles verzichtend, bis zum Olymp gekommen. Die Trophäen sind so eng mit diesem Zauberer von Umag verbunden. Sein besonderes Verhältnis zum Handball weckt in jedem Verliebten
in diese Sportart das Gefühl, er steht in einer ständigen Zwiespältigkeit
und im Konflikt mit sich selbst. Manchmal gewinnt man den Eindruck,
der Handball wäre zugleich sein größter Feind und sein bester Freund, zur
gleichen Zeit liebt und hasst er diese Sportart... Aus diesem ewigen Kampf

hates it. From the eternal battles caused by these two polar opposites,
an amazing energy is created that pulls him unstoppably forwards, always towards new challenges, to the unexplored area of his greatest
love: handball. He always likes to say that the energy that comes from
the soul is stronger than any other form of energy. This is a positive
energy, which is transmitted to all those who work with him and those
who watch him, Lino claims.
Actually this energy was created in Lino a long time ago, whilst he
was playing in a small Novigrad handball club. Still today he proudly
shows his photographs of his first steps in handball. Even then, and
with his belief in the human potential of this small provincial area, he
set out for the world. Only he knows how difficult it is to get from
the provinces to the Olympics. This path is not only full of pot-holes,
but also the human stereotype that the provinces never create successful people. He always stresses how he was lucky to be surrounded by
young people from the provinces, from which he came himself. Born
in a small village near Vrsar, he shared with them the desire to work,
and by believing that the idea – alongside hard work – would lead to

der zwei Antipoden entsteht unerschöpfliche Energie, die ihn unaufhaltsam
nach vorne treibt, immer in die neuen Herausforderungen, zu unerforschten
Bereichen seiner größten Liebe: des Handballs. Er sagt immer gerne, dass
die Energie, welche aus der Seele kommt, stärker als jede andere ist. Das
ist so eine positive Energie, die sich auf alle Leute, die mit dir arbeiten und
die dir zuschauen, ausbreitet, betont Lino.
Gerade mit dieser Energie hat Lino noch vor langer Zeit angefangen, als er
in dem kleinem Handballklub in Novigrad gespielt hat. Auch heute noch
zeigt er mit Stolz die Fotos von seinen ersten Handballschritten. Noch damals hat er sich, mit Glauben an das menschliche Potenzial, aus der kleinen
Provinz auf den Weg in die Welt gemacht. Und wie schwer es ist, von einer kleinen Provinz bis nach Olymp zu kommen, weiß nur er. Dieser Weg
war nicht nur dornenvoll, sondern auch von Stereotypen geprägt, dass eine
Provinz nie erfolgreiche Menschen hervorbringt. Er betont immer, dass sein
Glück darin liegt, dass er um sich junge Leute aus der Provinz, aus welcher auch er selbst stammt, gesammelt hat. Geboren in einem kleinen Dorf
in der Nähe von Vrsar, war ihm ein Vergnügen mit ihnen zusammen zu arbeiten, mit seiner Überzeugung, dass eine Idee – mit guter Arbeit – zum

success. By believing in people, little by little, the ‘Mago di Umago’
or ‘Magician from Umag’, as he is called by current citizens’, made
it to the Olympics.
Although by profession he is a teacher of the Croatian language, and
later became a journalist, he left his profession because of his first love
and became a leading handball trainer. His career as a trainer began in
1975 where he firstly trained former RK Istraturist, which in 1990 was
in the first league of that time, then foreign clubs, and then for some
time the Italian national team. He then returned to Croatia and started
to work with the Croatian national team. In 2003, he became its trainer and selector, and in the same year the national team became world
champions. Already by the next year, in the Olympic games in Athens,
they won the gold medal, and in 2005, they became the vice champions
of the world. His colleagues are in total agreement when they speak
about him: he is a professional at his job, a man of great expertise and
knowledge, and has a brilliant handball mind, that one can only be in
awe of. But in his soul, he remains an ordinary everyday man, who always carries his Umag and his homeland Croatia in his heart.

Erfolg bringen kann. Mit seinem Vertrauen in Menschen, hat dieser ‘Mago
di Umago’, wie er von den Insassen genannt wird, eine Treppe nach der anderen den Olymp erreicht.
Seine ursprünglichen Berufe als Kroatischlehrer und später Journalist verließ er wegen seiner größten Liebe und wurde Spitzenhandballtrainer. Seine
Karriere als Trainer begann er 1975, als er zuerst den ehemaligen Handballklub
Istraturist trainiert hat, mit welchem er 1990 in die damalige erste Liga gekommen ist. Danach kamen ausländische Klubs, und eine Zeit lang war er
der Trainer der italienischen Mannschaft. Er kehrt danach nach Kroatien zurück und beginnt mit der kroatischen Mannschaft zu arbeiten. 2003 wurde er
Trainer, und im selben Jahr auch der Weltmeister mit der Mannschaft. Schon
im nächsten Jahr gewann er die goldene Medaille auf den Olympischen
Spielen in Athen, und 2005 wurde er Zweiter in der Welt.
Seine Kollegen reden gleich über ihn: Er ist ein solcher Kenner seiner Arbeit,
ein Mann des Faches und Wissens und dabei noch redselig und mit einem

ven today the older inhabitants of Istria remember the
legendary Parenzana railway, which between 1902 and
1935 was the key route for the transportation of agricultural products in north western Istria. Although it
has been out of function for many decades, a few years ago the
Parenzana served as the inspiration for a new tourist attraction.
The County of Istria, the Management Board for Tourism and
the Association for the Renovation of the Poreč-Kopar-Trieste
railway started the important ‘Parenzana – the trail of health
and friendship’ project, where they have promoted the former
railway as a cycling path and trail that offers extremely beautiful excursions, which can only add to the charms of your
holiday in Umag.

The Parenzana narrow gauge railway line
But let’s start at the beginning. Corn growers in Istria waited for
almost 30 years for this 76 centimetre wide and 123 kilometre
long railway line. This was ever since the Istrian railway officially
opened in 1876, which proved to be totally ineffective in terms of
developing trade in this area. This railway was principally built
for the army in order to provide a connection between the naval
port of Pula and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Whilst the coastal
towns, which were connected to the rest of the world by the sea,
developed in an unhindered way, Istria’s hinterland didn’t have any
opportunity to place its products on the market. Therefore on 1st
of May 1902 the opening of the first Parenzana line (59 km from

Doch, beginnen wir von vorne. Auf die 76 cm breite und 123 km
lange Bahnlinie warteten die Bewohner Nordwest-Istriens fast 30

Hinterland Istriens absolut keine Chance auf eine Platzierung seiner
Produkte. Aus diesem Grund wurde am 1. April 1902 die Eröffnung

A small museum was opened at the end of 2007 in the village of Livade, which
is dedicated to the Parenzana. The main theme of the museum is “Parenzana –
as it once was and today”. There are exhibits that bear witness to the history
of the railway line, photographs donated by the famous photographers Renco
Kosinožić and Ivan Zidar, and screen displays with 3D effects, a large electronic
chart on which the entire Parenzana railway line is mapped out. The museum

few months later, on the 15th of December of the same year to
be precise, 64 kilometres more line were made available, which
is the part between Buje and Poreč.
The Parenzana joined three states together: Italy, Slovenia and
Croatia. It passed through 9 tunnels (a total length of 1530 m),
11 bridges, 6 viaducts, numerous railways stations, a warehouse,
a water station, embankments, and gorges. At last the hinterland
of Istria was able to present and distribute good quality products
like wine, olive oil, fruit, vegetables, livestock, and stone. The
railway got the name Parenzana totally by chance in a circular
that was included in the Trieste state railway magazine, which
described the first part of the railway to Buje that was renovated
in February 1902. Since the aim of the circular was to stress the
point that the railway would finally reach Poreč, it was called the

Warenlager, Deiche, Einschnitte und ermöglichte somit dem Hinterland
von Istrien seine Präsentation und den Vertrieb von Qualitätsprodukten
wie Wein, Olivenöl, Obst, Gemüse, Vieh, Stein… Den Namen
Parenzana hat die Trasse ganz zufällig in einem Rundschreiben
bezüglich der ersten Trasse nach Buje erhalten, veröffentlicht im
Feb. 1902 in der Triester Zeitschrift staatlicher Eisenbahnen. Da die
Eisenbahn zum Schluss bis ganz nach Poreč fahren sollte, wurde sie

of 20km/h, for 33 years the track was the most vital trade route for
this part of Istria, which linked 33 Istrian settlements to Europe.
In the end, modern technology took its toll and more developed
and faster road routes resulted in the Parenzana’s demise.
So it was that on 31st of August 1935 the last journey was held,
which was followed by the public auction of the assets. The wagons and engines were sold in Italy, but there is a legend connected
to the tracks. In fact, this has never been confirmed, but it definitely fits in very well with the Parenzana’s interesting history.
The tracks were apparently put on a ship for Abyssinia, which for
some reason sunk and thus on their journey to a place in Africa,
the tracks ended at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea… Luckily,
the remainder of the railway’s infrastructure met with a somewhat
happier fate. The stations, bridges and viaducts were more or less

Lokomotiven wurden in Italien verkauft, während über das Schicksal
der Gleise eine Geschichte erzählt, die aber nie bestätigt wurde: die
Gleise sollen auf ein Schiff geladen sein, um nach Abessinien in
Afrika transportiert zu werden. Das Schiff soll aber niedergesunken sein und damit auch die Gleise, die sich jetzt irgendwo auf den
Boden des Mittelmeerses befinden sollen... Die restliche Infrastruktur
der Parenzana hatte ein etwas glücklicheres Schicksal. Bahnhöfe,
Brücken und Viadukte wurden mehr oder weniger bewahrt, vielleicht

The train’s wagons, which were 8.5 metres long, were divided into passenger (30
seats) cars, goods wagons, and luggage wagons. They were lit by paraffin lamps,
had no toilets, but did have balconies. At firs,t they used U-series steam locomotives, then later on they used P-series, and finally the Italian P-series.

And so today the Parenzana is living a new life. A life that is quite
different to the one it had long ago in 1902, but equally as important, interesting, and alluring. Sixty kilometres of the old tracks
of the Istrian part of the line (in the area that covers the municipalities of Vižinada, Karojba, Motovun, Oprtalj, Grožnjan, as well
as the towns of Buje and Umag) have been renovated and transformed into a cycle and hiking trail that was officially opened on
the 10th of May 2008. At the same time, 20 kilometres of line in
the Republic of Slovenia have also been renovated. The Parenzana
has been principally designed as a bicycle trail, but it is also suitable for hiking. For those who are not able to explore it in its entirety, a few parts have been separated that can be accessed by car
Doch heute atmet die Parenzana mit neuem Atem auf. Zwar etwas

und verlockend. Sechzig Kilometer der alten Trasse der istrischen
Bahnlinie (Gebiet der Gemeinden Vižinada, Karojba, Motovun,
Oprtalj, Grožnjan sowie der Städte Buje und Umag) wurde revitalisiert und in einen Rad- und Spazierweg umfunktioniert, der am
10. Mai 2008 feierlich eröffnet wurde. Gleichzeitig wurden ca. 20
km der Linie im Gebiet der Republik Slowenien befähigt. In erster Linie dient die Parenzana als Radweg, ist allerdings auch für
Trekking gut geeignet, und für all jene, die keine Möglichkeit haben, sie komplett zu erforschen, wurden einige Punkte abgesondert,
die mit dem Auto erreicht werden können und in dessen Nähe sich

Since the town of Buje was the starting point from where the
first Parenzana trains travelled towards Trieste, or Poreč, so the
cycle paths have been divided into two directions: from Buje towards the Slovenian border, and from Grožnjan and Motovun towards Vižinada.
Part of Parenzana towards the state border begins at the town’s railway station, passing through villages Volpija, Kaldanija, Specijarija,
Markovac, Valica…through woods and valleys towards Savudrija
and of course Umag with its attractive heart of the old town. At
the end of the track begins a long dive to the seaside, with a
beautiful view of the Bay of Piran. Should you decide to drive
towards Vižinada, the journey starts again at the railway station in

Da die ersten Züge der Parenzana aus Buje in Richtung Trieste,
bzw. Poreč, gestartet sind, wurden die Radwege in zwei Richtungen
aufgeteilt: aus Buje in Richtung slowenischer Grenze und aus Buje
in Richtung Vižinada über Grožnjan und Motovun.
Der Teil der Parenzana Richtung Staatsgrenze beginnt an der
Eisenbahnstation der Stadt, fährt an den Orten Volpija, Kaldanija,
Specijarija, Markovac, Valica…vorbei und führt durch Wälder und
Felder zu Savudrija und der Stadt Umag. Am Ende der Trasse befindet sich ein langer Abstieg zum Meer mit einer wunderschönen

Evidence of the existence of a project for the expansion of the railway from
Poreč to Kanfanar is found in the stone kilometre signs that run the length of
the railway. These signs have the letters TPC carved on them, which means
Trieste-Parenzo-Canfanaro (Trst-Poreč-Kanfanar). However, the planned expansion to Kanfanar never occurred.

Kanfanar zeugen kilometerlange Steinzeichen, die Entlang der Linie aufgestellt sind, auf denen ‘TPC’ eingemeißelt war, was bedeutet Trieste-Parenzo-
Canfanaro (Triest-Poreč-Kanfanar). Der geplante Abschnitt bis Kanfanar wurde
allerdings niemals realisiert.
Accidents Unfälle
Since the architects from the inland did not fully understand the weather con-
ditions in this coastal region countryside and its violent winds, the trains were
sometimes derailed due to the bora wind. In 1910, there was a tragic railway
accident in Milja with many injured and three killed. As a result of this, a protective fence was constructed.

Bora einige Male aus den Gleisen oder wurde sogar vom Gleis entfernt. Im
Jahr 1910 geschah ein schlimmer Verkehrsunfall mit der Eisenbahn mit vielen
Verletzten und drei Toten. Aus diesem Grunde wurde später ein Windschutz an
den Umzäunungen angebracht.
Speed Geschwindigkeit
The average speed of the Parenzana was pretty modest, about 20 km/h on average, and sometimes only 10 km/h when it was going up a hill. Whilst it was
travelling, passengers were able to get off the carriage, walk about and sometimes avoid paying their tickets…

On this part of the track, there are frequent tunnels, overpasses and
ruins, former ‘bloodline’ of Parenzana… Should you wish to tour the
most attractive points of Parenzana by car, recommended accesses are
Valica, Stanica, Sv. Stefan near Kostanjica, Završje, Vižintini, village
Krti near Antonci, Kanal next to Motovuna, Karojba and viaduct St.
Vital or Veli Most (a big bridge) across the brook Sabadin. You can
reach these destinations by car, followed by short but eventful walk,
and enjoy the beauties of Parenzana.
In whatever way you decide to explore Parenzana, you will be able
to experience the amazing beauty of the Istrian countryside, viewpoints, rivers, fields, natural depressions and mystic tunnels in the
Umag hinterland. And they can definitely tell you countless stories
about the history of the Istrian area, the effort, tribulations and joys

on’t judge a book by its cover’. This is a phrase that
is applicable to everything in life, and also relates
to cooking. Truffle lovers understand its meaning
very well. This underground mushroom is so ugly
that when you first look at it you would never think that it has
anything to do with wonderful cooking, especially since its smell
takes some time to get used to. But irrespective of the fact that
it is extremely ugly, its unique taste, its rarity, and its alleged
aphrodisiac qualities make it as valuable as gold!
Once it used to be dug up by the kilo, but today it has become
much more difficult to find. It is an activity that is in the process
of being regulated in order to stop the over exploitation of this
underground treasure. Dogs are the truffle hunter’s best friend.
In fact they are more than this: they are an important factor in
the family fortunes, because depending on the season, the price
of truffles can rise to a few thousand Euros per kilogram. Dogs

sowohl in allen Lebenssituationen, als auch in der
Kochkunst, anwenden kann. Trüffelliebhaber wissen es wohl am besten. Dieser unterirdische Pilz
ist so unattraktiv, dass man ihn nie mit hoher Kochkunst
verbinden würde und an dessen Geruch gewohnt man
sich schwer. Aber sein spezifischer Geschmack, sein seltenes Vorkommen und angebliche aphrodisische Merkmale,
machen ihn, trotz seines schlechten Aussehens, zum Gold
wert.
Einst buddelte man ihn kiloweise aus und heute ist er
schwer zu finden. Man versucht die Tätigkeit in Sinne der
Vorbeugung des übermäßigen Ausgrabens der unterirdischen
Schätze zu regeln. Die besten Freunde der Trüffel sind die
Hunde. Der Pilz sorgt auch für den Familienunterhalt, da,
abhängig von der Saison, sein Preis bis zu einige Tausend
Euro pro Kilogramm wächst. Der Hund wird dressiert und

so the tuber can grow once more. And both get a reward: the
truffle hunter gets a truffle, and the dog is given a tasty morsel
for a job well done.
Although there are almost seventy types of truffle in existence,
only four can be found in Istria: Tuber magnatum Pico – the authentic white truffle, Tuber melanosporum Vittadini – the authentic black truffle, Tuber aestivum Vittadini-Scorzone – the black
summer truffle, and Tuber brumale Vittadini – the winter truffle.
The white truffle is the most highly prized and is dug out in late
summer, autumn and at the beginning of winter. This is why we
love them so much! Because they are so mystical and unattractive, and at the same time so powerful that they can create a real treat even in the simplest dishes.

Obwohl es fast siebzig Trüffelarten gibt, in Istrien sind nur
vier zu finden: Tuber magnatum Pico – der edle weiße Trüffel,
Tuber melanosporum Vittadini – der edle shwarze Trüffel, Tuber
aestivum Vittadini-Scorzone – Sommertrüffel und Tuber brumale Vittadini – Wintertrüffel. Der weiße Trüffel ist der wertvollste und wird im Spätsommer, Herbst und Winteranfang
ausgegraben.
Weil er mystisch, unattraktiv und gleichzeitig so mächtig ist,
dass man aus der einfachsten Speise eine Köstlichkeit machen
kann... Deswegen lieben wir ihn!

hen something such as the truffle, which is so valued and so difficult to find, develops into a family
business with good prospects in the future, we can
call it a real success. The thirty years of tradition
and experience in looking for truffles that the Zigante family
from Livade has got, has resulted in the first and only firm in
Istria that engages in the activity of conserving, packaging and
selling truffle products.
Zigante family process and conserve truffles in their own factory,
which has a surface area of 1600m2 and was officially opened
in 2008. In collaboration with a large number of partners, they
organize the distribution themselves: using a chain of shops that
sell original Istrian products (Buje, Buzet, Grožnjan, Livade, Pula
and Motovun). They also entered the global markets: the firm
has representatives and/or shops in Austria, Germany, Slovenia,
Serbia, their products are exported to European countries and the
USA. Sales on the foreign markets make up 38% of their total
sales. Their production program includes fresh products as well

wahres Erfolg. 30-jährige Tradition und Erfahrung
beim Trüffelsammeln resultierte für Familie Zigante aus
dem Ort Livade mit der Gründung des ersten und einzigen
Unternehmens in Istrien, das sich mit der Konservierung,
Verpackung und Verkauf von Trüffelprodukten beschäftigt.
Das Geschäft, feierlich eröffnet im Jahr 2008, läuft in der
eigenen Verarbeitungs- und Konfektionierungsfabrik auf der
Fläche von 1.600m². Neben der Zusammenarbeit mit zahlreichen Partnern, ist das Unternehmen als Distribuent an
Ladenketten mit originellen istrischen Produkten tätig (Buje,
Buzet, Grožnjan, Livade, Pula und Motovun). Der internatio-
nale Markt ist dem istrischen Trüffel keine Unbekanntheit:
die Firma hat ihre Vertreter und/oder Läden in Österreich,
Deutschland, Slowenien, Serbien: die Produkte, auch konser-
vierte weiße und schwarze Trüffel (ganz oder gemahlen), in

as preserved white and black truffles (whole or milled), truffles
in slices or combined with olive oil, honey, mushrooms, cheese
and similar. They are all tasty delicacies!
The Zigante family also runs a restaurant in Livade, which is
open throughout the year, place where anyone who wants to
enjoy good wine and food is welcome, or perhaps (if they order
this in advance!) to experience the adventure of the original truffle hunt. The restaurant’s menu is mainly based on truffles but it
does not solely offer truffles, and there are wines from all over
the world on its rich wine list. Thanks to the truffle festival in
Livade, that they organize, this small Istrian village has experienced a true renaissance and been given the name the ‘Centre
of the truffle world’. When the road leads you to Livade, don’t
forget to look at the large bronze mould of a truffle which on
30.03.2000 was confirmed by the Guinness world record centre as the largest truffle in the world… the white truffle in the
Motovun forest was found by Mr Giancarlo Zigante and his dog
Diana, and had a weight of 1.31 kg.

ganzen Welt zu finden. Dank der Trüffelmesse in Livade, de-
ren Mitorganisator die Familie Zigante ist, erlebte dieser kleine
istrische Ort seine Wiedergeburt und bekam das Attribut des
Zentrums der Trüffelwelt.

den Bronzenguß des größten Trüffels der Welt, der am 30.03.2008
ins Guinessbuch der Rekorde einging, anzusehen.

Ingredients (for 4 persons):
Season the duck breasts with salt and pepper, cut the skin
across and gently smear honey so it would become crispy
while roasting. Grill the breasts for 20 minutes. When the
meat is ready, slice it. Grill the apples. In the mean time,
boil the oranges and run through a strainer, then boil for another 10 minutes and add cooking cream. Slice the truffles.
Serve together.
Bestandteile (für 4 Personen):
Die Entenbrust mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen, die Haut quer einschneiden und leicht mit Honig beschmieren, damit sie beim
Braten knusprig wird. Die Entenbrust auf einem Grill 20 Min.

Ingredients (for 4 persons):
Beat the butter to froth, add cocoa and melted black chocolate. In the other bowl, mix eggs with sugar and vanilla sugar
and stir until the mixture grows (10 minutes). Add butter and
chocolate and in the end, flour and grated truffle. The preparation has to be in the fridge for at least 2 hours, after which
it is baked for 13–15 minutes. It is served warm, with fresh
wild berries.

The most visited regatta in the
Mediterranean
Die meist besuchte Mittelmeerregatta
T
he Trieste regatta, the Barcolana, is an annual event that
makes new records every year... It should be proud of the
fact that last year there were around 2000 boats on the
start line, around 25 000 sailors and about 300 000 spectators on the land….These dizzying figures are the reason why the
Barcolana deserves to have the title of the largest, most exciting and
one of the most striking regattas in the Mediterranean. This race
is a true celebration of the sea, adventure tourism and the sporting-competitive soul. Large yachts and small boats, professional
sailors, passionate amateurs and beginners participate in it, and no
matter what the weather is like, it is held on the second Sunday in
October. The regatta’s rhombus shaped course is around 16 miles
long and enters Slovenian waters…
It all began in 1969 when 51 boats attended the race. During the
Barcolana’s first decade, the clubs surrounding the Trieste bay were
the main competitors, and it was in 1980 that the first foreign boat
from Munich won (called Rupe). This was when the regatta got an
international character, and became a target for sailors throughout the

Mittelmeer trägt. Das Rennen stellt ein richtiges Fest von Wasser,
Abenteuerlichkeit und sportlichen Wettbewerbsgeist dar. An dieser
Regatta nehmen große Yachten und kleine Boote, professionelle
Segler, leidenschaftliche Amateure und Anfänger teil, unabhängig vom Wetter findet sie regelmäßig am zweiten Oktobersonntag
statt und das Regattenfeld besteht aus einem cca. 16 Meilen langen
Trapez, das auch in das slowenische Wassergebiet reicht...
Und alles begann noch 1969, als 51 Boote das Rennen gewagt haben. Während des ersten Jahrzehnts haben bei der Barcolana hauptsächlich Vereine aus der Umgebung der Triester Bucht konkurriert,
und erst 1980 siegt das erste ausländische Boot aus München (Rupe

worth visiting. Numerous tourist agencies organise ‘mini cruises’
for the curious visitors who want to watch the Barcolana from
the sea. However, spectators who want to use their own boats
are restricted because of safety reasons. So if you want to be
a part of this magnificent event, be wise and reserve your visit

mag is definitely the number one tennis destination in Croatia and
the Mediterranean. On over 60 modern and well kept tennis courts,
recreational players and professionals compete with each other
and enjoy themselves. Due to the comfortable climate, the tennis season
does not stop even during the winter months, and the effort of playing in
the summer is made more easier by a refreshing sea breeze...
The fact that makes Umag the most proud is that throughout the year
numerous tournaments are held on its tennis courts, where the world’s
best players participate. The most notable is, of course, the international
ATP Studena Croatia Open Tour that has a large prize fund. Asides from
the globally famous ATP tournament, ITF group 1 (up to 18 years old)
and the TE group 2 (to 14 years) tournaments are held, thanks to which
Umag has become a not to be missed stop off point in the development
of young European and world class competitors.
Since 2008, Istraturist started up once again tennis school that goes by
the name of Tennis Camp Umag. The tennis camp’s activities take place
in 4 tennis centres on the 46 Istraturist tennis courts, and the wide range
of possibilities on offer will definitely satisfy all those who love tennis.
Tennis Camp Umag organises individual and group tennis tournaments,
offers the possibility of individual and group organised tennis coaching,
organises sparring matches, rents out its courts and tennis equipment, and
offers tennis racquet stringing services. It also offers a variety of different tennis packages, which last between two days and up to a week. The
packages are at different intensities, depending on the player’s level of
readiness and are intended for both adults and children.
Having only started in spring 2008, Tennis Club Umag has already had
much success in its first season! It was attended by children from all
over the world, and the majority are going to come back. Some families dedicate most of their summer holiday to their children and decide
to take their summer holiday in Umag. There is a special program for

Umag der absolute Favorit. Auf mehr als 60 modern eingerichteten und gepflegten Tennisplätzen spielen Rekreationsund Profispieler und genießen dabei. Das angenehme Klima ist ein
Grund, warum die Tennissaisson auch in Wintermonaten stattfindet
und im Sommer mildert die vom Meer kommende erfrischende Brise
die Anstrengungen.
Besonders stolz ist die Stadt Umag darauf, dass auf ihren Tennisplätzen
jedes Jahr zahlreiche Turniere stattfinden, an denen Weltklassespieler
teilnehmen - die internationale ATP Studena Croatia Open Tour ist
mit einem großen Gewinnfond wohl das berühmteste Turnier. Außer
dem bekannten ATP Turnier finden in Umag auch ITF group1 (bis 18
Jahre) und TE group 2 Turniere (bis 14 Jahre) statt. Dank ihnen ist
Umag ein Muss in der Entwicklung zum Spieler des europäischen, sogar Weltranges, geworden.
2008 hat die Fa. Istraturist die Tennisschule unter dem Namen Tennis
Camp Umag wiedereröffnet. Die Aktivitäten finden in 4 Tenniszentren, auf
46 Tennisplätzen von Istraturist statt. Viele Kombinationsmöglichkeiten
aus dem Angebot stellen jeden Tennisliebhaber zufrieden.
Tennis Camp Umag organisiert für Touristen Einzel- oder Gruppenturniere,
bietet die Möglichkeit, Trainer für Einzel- oder Gruppentraining zu
angagieren, Organisierung von Sparring- Matchs, Vermietung von
Tennisplätzen und Ausstattung, Tennisschläger spannen... Im Angebot
sind auch unterschiedliche Tennispakete in Dauer von 2 Tagen bis 1
Woche. Sie sind, abhängig von der körperlichen Ausdauer, unterschiedlicher Intensität und sind sowohl für Erwachsene als auch für
Kinder geeignet.
Das im Frühling 2008 wiedereröffnete Tennis Camp Umag hat schon
in seiner ersten Saison wahre Erfolge erlebt! Aus der ganzen Welt
kommen Kinder, die meisten kommen jedes Jahr zurück und viele

child competitors – the Junior ‘Intensive’ tennis programme, where in
addition to coaching it also includes sparring matches as well as a fitness programme. Many child competitors return to Umag a few times
a year... Who knows, perhaps a future Nadal, Moya or Ljubičić is
playing amongst them? Ten educated expert coaches work in the camp
and all of them have got huge experience in working with children. It
is particularly important that when parents are choosing a programme
they listen to the coach’s advice, since this is the only way that they
can make sure that their child has the right coaching. When choosing
a program for their children, parents often decide on individual coaching. However, whilst adults are looking for their independence in tennis, where they want to perfect their individual technique and most often decide on individual sessions, children seek out the game in tennis
and enjoy it. They like company, games, conversations, communication... And this is exactly what the group coaching sessions offer! While
they are waiting for the rest of the group to carry out their exercises,
they can relax, share a joke, have some fun... In groups their skills
are also compared, thereby stimulating their competitive spirit, which
makes them progress even more quickly. Although the coaches speak
Croatian, Italian, German, English and Russian, communication in the
camp is mainly carried out in the English language. But being understood at the camp is not a problem! Thanks to a shared love of tennis
between the children, who come from different countries, new friendships are made that break down the boundaries of non-understanding.
And finally, if you ask how old your child should be before they can
start playing tennis, our coach’s answer is a simple one: ‘The moment
they want to and when they are able to hold a racquet in their hands’.
Our coaches do say this with a smile, and advise group coaching for
children aged between 4-5 and 9-10 years old, and individual sessions for those who are older than 9-10 years.

Familien unterstellen fast den ganzen Urlaub ihrem Kind und verbringen ihn in Umag.
Für ‘Wettkampfkinder’ gibt es ein Sonderprogramm - Junior
Tennisprogramme ‘Intensive’ das außer dem Trainig auch SparringMatches und Konditionsprogramme umfasst. Viele Kinder kommen
mehrmals im Jahr nach Umag. Wer weiß, vielleicht ist unter ihnen ein
zukünftiger Nadal, Moya oder Ljubičić?
Im Camp sind cca. 10 geschulte und fachliche Trainer tätig. Sie alle haben
mit Kinder langjährige Erfahrungen. Besonders wichtig ist, dass die Eltern
bei der Auswahl des Programmes auf Ratschläge der Trainer hören, da sie
nur auf diese Weise ihrem Kind das adäquateste Training ermöglichen.
Die Eltern entscheiden sich meistens für das Einzeltraining. Aber, während Erwachsene im Tennis unabhängig sein, einzelne Techniken verbessern wollen und sich meistens für Individualtraining entscheiden, suchen
Kinder im Tennis das Spielen, genießen es, mögen das Zusammensein
mit anderen Kindern, das Spiel, Gespräch, Kommunikation... und gerade
dies finden sie im Gruppentraining! Während sie warten, dass andere ihre
Übungen beenden, können sie ausruhen, spielen, Spaß haben... In einer
Gruppe können die Kinder auch ihre Kräfte abmessen, den Kampfgeist
stärken und allein dadurch sind ihre Fortschritte größer.
Obwohl die Trainer Kroatisch, Italienisch, Deutsch, Englisch und Russisch
sprechen, wird im Camp hauptsächlich Englisch gesprochen. Aber das
Verständigen ist nie ein Problem! Dank gemeinsamer Liebe zum Tennis,
entstehen zwischen Kindern aus ganzer Welt neue Freundschaften und
die Grenzen der Unverständigung werden gebrochen.
Schlussendlich, wenn Sie sich fragen, in welchem Alter Ihr Kind mit
dem Tennisspiel anfangen kann, ist die Antwort unserer Trainer einfach:
‘Wenn Ihr Kind es will und den Schläger in der Hand halten kann’, sagen
die Trainer lachend und empfehlen Gruppentraininge für Kinder im Alter
zwischen 4-5 und 9-10 Jahren, und Einzelstunden für 9-10- jährige.

Herbstliche Gastrofestivals
he rich culinary produce in the Autumn always gives Umag and the surrounding areas
extra value. October and November are reserved
for the Tuberfest – a truffle festival which is held
in Livade. In addition to a variety of events, such
as for example the evaluation of the largest and
most beautiful truffle, there is a truffle auction, a
truffle-hunting demonstration, and, of course, the
tasting of these delicacies in one hundred and one
different ways. Further on the famous Savudrija
sole fish is respected and valued throughout
October and November at an event called ‘Zlatna
švoja’ (Golden Sole). It is a gourmet extravaganza
where dishes are prepared using sole and where
this delicacy from the sea is promoted. In nearby Brtonigla, the ‘Gljivarijada’ (mushrooms festival) is celebrated, where there is a presentation
of the mushrooms that are found in the Istria area
– both the edible ones and the poisonous ones.
After an exhibition of over one hundred mushrooms, there are the accompanying events – the
tasting of mushroom based dishes and musical entertainment. The November days of young wine
that occur throughout the region should definitely
not be forgotten since Istrian wine is one of the
most popular in Croatia. And they celebrate this
meaningful event accordingly!

er an gastronomischen Früchten reiche Herbst
in Umag und seiner Umgebung wird immer
wertvoller. Der Oktober und der November sind für
das Tuberfest – ein Trüffelfestival reserviert, das im
Ort Livade mit zahlreichen Ereignissen stattfindet,
wie beispielsweise die Bewertung des größten und
schönsten Trüffels, eine Trüffelversteigerung, eine
demonstrative Suche und natürlich eine Kostprobe
dieser Delikatesse auf hundertundeine Art... Weiter
wird die Seezunge von Savudrija im Oktober und
November geehrt und geschätzt, und zwar innerhalb
einer Manifestation namens ‘Zlatna švoja’ (Goldene
Seezunge). Hierbei handelt es sich um eine
Gourmetschau der Zubereitung von Seezungen und
die Promotion dieser Meeresdelikatesse. Der naheliegende Ort Brtonigla feiert auch die ‘Gljivarijada’
(ein Pilzfest), und zwar durch die Präsentation aller Pilzarten, die sich im Herbst im Raum Istrien
befinden – seien es essbare oder giftige. Nach
der Pilzausstellung mit über hundert Pilzarten folgen weitere Zusatzevents – die Kostprobe von
Pilzgerichten sowie eine Musikunterhaltung. Auf gar
keinen Fall darf man die Novembertage des jungen Weins in der ganzen Region vergessen, denn
die istrischen Weine gehören zu den populärsten in
Kroatien, dementsprechend werden ihnen bedeutende Events gewidmet!
