Einladungen zu privaten Feiern – für Sie kein
Problem!
Wenn Sie für Ihren Chef eine Einladung an englischsprachige
Geschäftspartner schreiben sollen – und er Ihnen keinen
Anhaltspunkt gibt, wie er es gerne hätte –, stehen Sie vor
einen Dilemma: Sie wissen nicht, was im Heimatland Ihrer
„Zielperson“ so üblich ist. Wir helfen Ihnen aus der Klemme.
Die Lösung ist ganz einfach: Da es sich um ein (halb-)privates
Schreiben handelt, gibt es keine Formvorschriften. Das heißt,
dass Sie bei der Gestaltung alle Freiheiten haben.
Allerdings sind zu viele Freiheiten auch wieder ein Hemmschuh
für Ihre Kreativität, deshalb unser Tipp:

If you found it hard to make up your mind on this exercise, that is
good. The logic for this exercise was to show you that it is not the
occasion alone which determines the tone.
Graduelle Unterschiede
Nevertheless, you can be sure that in general a wedding is more
formal than a barbeque and a thanksgiving dinner more
conservative than a birthday party.
But apart from that, two more factors play a role, making the
solution to this exercise kind of arbitrary if they are not taken into
consideration.
Die Persönlichkeit des Einladenden
If your boss is a young and innovative person, he or she might
even celebrate more formal events like a wedding in an
innovative way, maybe as an open-air party or a boat trip.
If he is more conservative, he might decide to make his birthday
party a formal buffet reception with classical music or similar...
Peinlichkeiten vermeiden
Either way it would not be what people might expect. In order to

spare them any embarrassment, it would be your task to tell
them in your invitation what to wear (in the case of the reception it
may be semi-formal).

You can mention the dress code in the invitation, e.g. after a
wedding:

Der Einzuladende
When planning invitations for a bigger, more formal event, such
as a wedding, you will design just one sort of invitation with
maybe a separate card for an evening reception, as shown in the
example above. This should be printed by a professional print
shop to ensure the best quality. This means you can only
vaguely address a target group and hope that it meets
everybody’s taste.
Your English guest will require a separate invitation on such
special and on any other occasion as well. This gives you the
opportunity to take his or her personality into account, too. If
your addressee is known to be very easygoing, you may take up
this tone.
And if you are not sure if he or she will know what to wear at a
German wedding, you can add:
Formal reception (only groom and best men will wear tuxedos)
This will make his or her decision whether to accept your
invitation a lot easier as you point out what can be expected.

Einladung Hauseinweihung
Our second example for invitations is the house-warming party. (It
could be a birthday party as well.) The occasion is not too serious
– apart from the fact houses will cost an arm and a leg – and
therefore you have no restrictions in creating the invitation. Only
the personality of the invitee, e.g. your boss, is relevant.
You can find a large selection of cards with funny pictures and
slogans on the internet, but these are for less creative people
than you. What you need is a hook to get the readers’ attention.

Again it depends on what your boss intends by the invitation, what
is most important to them:
- Is it the occasion itself? (getting a new house)
- Is it the kind of party? (barbeque)
- is it an expectation from the guests? (costume party)
- is it a message for others? (my new life …)
When you have discovered the hook, you can look for something
to illustrate it. This can be for example:

Whether you choose a photo of your boss as a kid happily
building a sand castle or take a quote from a famous person
depends on your boss’ taste. It’s your task to find the appropriate
items.
