welcome to hanwag
Joseph Wagner ist seit 70 Jahren täglich in der
Firma anzutreffen – auch heute noch.
Denn sein Wissen um die Schuhmacherei ist einzigartig!
Vor zwei Jahren stellte er die Weichen für die Zukunft.
Er gab zwar die Zügel der Firmenleitung aus der Hand,
legte aber für seine Nachfolger die Marschrichtung von
HANWAG fest.

for the last 70 years!
Joseph Wagner’s knowledge about the art of shoemaking is
unparalleled! Two years ago he passed on the management
and the ownership of the company to new hands, at the same
time instilling his ethos and character into the future

85 Years of hanwag – Heritage and future
Die Firma HANWAG feiert 2006 ihren 85. Geburtstag – genauso wie Joseph Wagner, der Neffe des Firmengründers Hans Wagner.
In so schnelllebigen Zeiten wie heute ist dies sicher etwas
Besonderes.
Was bedeutet dieses Jubiläum für uns? Neben einem Grund
zum Feiern betrachten wir es vor allem als Verpflichtung:
Als Verpflichtung zum Schuhmacherhandwerk, zur hohen
Qualität, zur Innovation, und unseren hoch qualifizierten
Mitarbeitern gegenüber.
Bis auf die Innovation sind dies sehr konservative Werte.
Aber wir sind überzeugt, dass dieses nachhaltige und langfristige Denken sowie Handeln mehr denn je unsere Zukunft
sind. Aus diesem Grund erfolgt unser Neubau an unserem
Stammsitz in Vierkirchen – und zwar mit Verwaltung und
Produktion!
Während die meisten Unternehmen auf der Suche nach dem
niedrigsten Preis irgendwo in Billiglohnländern rund um
den Globus produzieren, haben wir uns ganz bewusst für
diesen anderen Weg entschieden.
Der Name HANWAG steht künftig mehr denn je für höchste
Qualität, Innovation, Zuverlässigkeit und die bestmögliche
Produkt-Performance. Wir wollen schlicht und einfach die
besten Trekking- und Bergschuhe der Welt herstellen (auch,
wenn sie vielleicht etwas mehr kosten).

Aber wir tun alles, um ihn zu erfüllen.

costs, we chose Germany as our manufacturing base. For

In the fast moving times in which we live our 85th anniversary
is something very special. What does it mean to us? As you
would of course expect joy and celebration but more….

our highly skilled staff.
More than ever before HANWAG’s name
will be synonymous with supreme quality, innovation, reliability, fit and the
best possible product performance
available. Put simply, we manufacture the world’s best trekking and
mountaineering boots (even though
they might cost slightly more!).
With the exception of innovation these are true conservative
values. Yet, we firmly believe that the values on which we
were built hold us in good stead for the future. Therefore,
we have not only renewed our headquarters in Vierkirchen

THE NEW ALPIN RANGE
HEELFIX
Bei steigeisenfesten Alpinstiefeln ist
guter Fersenhalt besonders wichtig –
und zugleich schwer zu erreichen. Der
Grund: Die extrem steife Sohle. Besonders beim Bergaufgehen oder beim Stehen auf den Steigeisen-Frontalzacken schlupft der Fuß
mit der Ferse nach oben. Das gibt leicht Blasen, was im
schlimmsten Fall das Ende einer Tour bedeutet.
Mit dem einzigartigen Heel-Fix-System, einer aufgenieteten Aluminiumplatte, kann die Ferse fest im Schuh fixiert
werden: Die Platte ist einfach von Hand auf die passende
Weite zu biegen (und von innen wieder aufzubiegen), aber
sie ist steif genug, um dauerhaft die Form zu halten. So sitzt
die Ferse optimal!
Heel-Fix
On one side, perfect heel-fit is essential,
particularly on crampon-compatible alpine boots! On the other side, it is extremely difficult to achieve. When walking
uphill or standing on the front teeth of a
crampon, the heel tends to slide upwards in the boot, resulting in painful blisters – or possible the end of the
day…
For this very reason, we have invented HEEL-FIX . The riveted aluminium-plate can be bent (or also unbent) by hand
to the ideal width. The plate is stiff enough to permanently
keep this width and fix your heel in the heel-box of your
HANWAG boot. Result: The perfect heel-fit!
Heel-Fix
Vari-Volume
schlichte Optik. Sieht simpel aus, ist es aber
keineswegs. In der Herstellung erfordert
solches Schuhwerk sehr viel mehr handwerkliches Können und verursacht höhere
Kosten. Nur große Stücke besten Leders eignen sich dafür.
Ausrichtung, Zuschnitt, Formgebung und Verarbeitung des
Leders erfordern viel Erfahrung: Nur dann spielt das Reduced Seams-Konzept seine Stärken aus: Lange Lebensdauer,
Stabilität, Flexibilität und hohe Atmungsaktivität.
Menschen haben bei gleicher Fußlänge
unterschiedlich „dicke“ Füße, bei manchen unterscheidet sich die Form links
und rechts, und je nach Temperaturbedingungen trägt man bei warmem Wetter vielleicht nur ein Paar dünne Socken,
während man im Winter noch ein zweites Paar benötigt.
Deshalb haben wir für unsere Alpinstiefel Vari-Volume
entwickelt, das zwei Möglichkeiten der individuellen Volumenanpassung bietet:

1. „Interchangeable Tongue“ ist ein System auswechselbarer Zungen mit unterschiedlichen Dicken.
Reduced Seams -Bauweise = wenig Nähte +
Die Click-Clamp -Schnürösen ermöglichen eine Zwei-Zonen-Schnürung. Der
Schuh kann am unteren Teil des Schafts
(im Rist- und Vorfußbereich) und im Knöchel- sowie Schienbeinbereich unterschiedlich fest geschnürt werden: Während man beispielsweise im Vorfußbereich bei tiefen Temperaturen
viel Bewegungsfreiheit benötigt (um die Blutzirkulation
nicht einzuschränken), behält man im Knöchelbereich
durch eine feste Schnürung volle Seitenstabilität und dadurch Trittkontrolle.
2. Wir liefern die Schuhe serienmäßig mit einer zusätzlichen, das Volumen verringernden Einlegesohle aus.
Ergebnis: Vari-Volume optimiert die Passform!

Feet have at the same length different volumes. Some people feet have different
shapes on the left and on the right. Besides, walkers and climber wear thicker
or thinner socks according to the weather
– or even two pairs of socks in the winter.
Therefore, we have invented Vari-Volume for our alpine
boots. It allows the adaptation of the volume:
1. An exchangeable inner tongue is a system with two
tongues with different thickness.
2. You will find a second set of insoles in the shoebox, allowing a further adaptation of volume.
Result: Vari-Volume optimizes the fit!

These special jamming eyelets allow a 2zone lacing. The boot can be laced independently on the fore- and mid-foot, and
around the ankle and shinbone. Typically,
you will tighten the upper part a bit less on
climbs, while tightening the lower part on descents. At low
temperatures, you need a lot of freedom of movement for
your toes to keep the blood circulating. Still, you want to
set your steps precisely – best achieved with fully tightened
upper part.
Reduced Seams
“Reduced Seams“ = as little seams as pos-
sible + clean aesthetics. This may look
simple, however, in production it is just the
opposite. It requires a lot more efforts,
costs, and skills. We can only use large
pieces of premium class leather. Also, the dye-cutting and
the sole mounting requires a lot of know how, experience,
accuracy and time. Done well, “Reduced Seams“ excels
with fantastic durability, stability and high breathebility.

WORKMANSHIP
HANWAG footwear is last constructed, i.e. the shaft is worked over the insole. This is a traditional, very complex manufacturing process, which involves a great deal of manual work. Yet, it is definitely worth the time and effort, as it
provides the footwear with excellent stability and ensures
a long lasting great fit.
Also, all shoes can be easily resoled – a fact that is of particular relevance for durable boots with a great fit! All
HANWAG footwear requires very experienced and highly
skilled craftsmanship – and HANWAG, with its 85 years of
experience, is renowned just for that!

All outsoles used by HANWAG contain natural rubber (a rather expensive material compared with cheaper PUR) – for
the same reason why it’s used for automobile tires: It offers
the perfect balance of friction and durability. On footwear intended for climbing, we use a softer (yet less robust blend)
than on boots made for walking only.

3. Lederpflege
PFLEGE | CARE
1. Reinigung
Einlegesohlen herausnehmen, bei gröberer Verschmutzung
auch die Schnürsenkel.
Außen: Bürsten Sie nach jeder Tour ihre Stiefel ab. Sitzt der
Schmutz sehr fest, sollten Sie das unter fließendem Wasser
tun. Spezielles Lederreinigungsmittel ist nur nötig, wenn alles andere versagt hat. Seife schadet der Imprägnierung und
den meisten Ledern.
Innen: Textilfutter (wie in den meisten GORE-TEX® -Stiefeln)
oder Lederfutter reinigen Sie am besten mit klarem Wasser
und einem Schwamm. Kein heißes Wasser verwenden.
Trocknen: Schuhe mit weit geöffneter Lasche nach der Reinigung an einen schattigen, trockenen, luftigen Ort stellen.
Schuhe mit Lederfutter stopfen Sie anfangs mit Zeitungspapier aus (mehrmals wechseln). GORE-TEX® -Stiefel trocknen
ohne Papier schneller. Achtung 1.Schuhe niemals feucht und
unbelüftet im Kofferraum, einer Plastiktüte, im Keller o.ä.

und dunkelt etwas nach. Wenn Sie das jedoch optisch stört,
können Sie auch spezielle flüssige Pflegemittel benutzen.
Überschüssiges Wachs wieder abbürsten
4. Sonstiges
Lagern Sie ihre Schuhe stehend und ohne Druck nur an trockenen und belüfteten Orten. Tipp: Schuhspanner verwenden. Halten Sie ihre Schuhe fern von Benzin, Diesel, Petroleum, aber auch Jauche. Reinigen Sie ihre Schuhe sofort nach
Kontakt. Wenn Sie ihre Schuhe eine Weile nicht benutzt haben, sollten Sie die Profilsohle leicht mit einer Drahtbürste
oder einem feinen Schleifpapier aufrauen.
2. Imprägnierung
Schuhe regelmäßig mit Sprays auf Fluorcarbon-Basis nachimprägnieren (auch neue Schuhe). Direkt nach der Reinigung auf den noch feuchten Schuh sprühen. Die Imprägnierung wirkt nach etwa 24 Stunden optimal. Viel hilft viel! Nah
CARE & MAINTENANCE
Good boots are not cheap. However, with
the right care and maintenance, they will
perform at their best – for years to come…
1. Cleaning
First, remove insoles and, in case of crusty dirt, also shoe–
laces.
Outer: After each use, brush off dirt. In case of persistent dirt,
rinse with plenty of water. Special leather cleaners should
be applied if all other cleaning treatments failed. Soap may
damage leather as well as impregnation.
Lining: Leather and textile linings (e.g. used in most GORETEX® -boots) are best cleaned with a sponge or a soft brush
and plain fresh water. Do not use hot water.
Drying: Thoroughly dry you boots after cleaning in a wellaired, dry and shady place with tongue wide open and insoles out. When really wet, stuff leather-lined footwear with
newspaper (replace paper after a few hours). GORE-TEX® boots dry faster without paper! Warning: 1. Never keep wet or
damp shoes in non-aired and humid places (e.g. plastic bag,
car boot, basement etc). 2. Never dry boots in the sun, near a
heater, oven, or over fire. Leather will be “burned”, it turns
dry, brittle and cracks.
2. Impregnation
Regularly apply fluorocarbon-based impregnation sprays
(also on brand-new footwear). Apply impregnation immedi-

ately after cleaning to the still damp leather. The impregnation achieves its full effect after 24 hours. The more the better!
Go close while spraying! Don’t forget to treat shoelaces and the
inaccessible corners on the tongue.
3. Leather Care
Wax: Dry leather needs moisturizing. Use special wax (no
oil or fat). Massage thin coat of wax into the dry leather.
Note: With each wax application, Nubuk, suede or any other
split leather will darken a bit and get a smoother surface. If
you want to avoid this, use special suede leather conditioner. Wipe off excess wax.
4. Further Tips
Store your boots standing, with no pressure in a dry, dark
and well-aired place. Ideally, use a shoetree. After a longer period of storage, roughen the profiled outsole a little
bit, using a wire brush or fine sandpaper. Keep your shoes
away from diesel, petrol, paraffin, as well as from manure.
In case of contact, clean your shoes immediately.
