CONNEMARA PONY BREEDERS’ SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA www.cpbsa.com.au Facebook\Connemara Pony Breeders Society of Australia May 2016 ‘PONY AT DAWN’ Winning picture (from 32 entries) in the Aonach Photography Competition, sponsored by Powderbark Stud, York, WA. 2015/16 Performance Register Sponsorship A reminder that we are looking for sponsors to support the 2015/16 Performance Register. We are in need of sponsors for this season to ensure we can continue to provide quality awards. Please support the Performance Register and contact Victoria at [email protected] for further details. The date for Pointscore cut-off is the end of May and all results will need to be forward to Catherine McTaggart by the end of June. If you have any queries please contact Catherine McTaggart at [email protected] or (08) 8648 1813. Good Luck! 1 John Bromfield riding CSU Sky High Diamond on behalf of owner, Kirsten Volz, to win the thrilling Puissance event, sponsored by ARC PLASTERING. Generous sponsorship by this firm allowed for the purchase of the Shamrock wings and Irish rails featured in the class and for a generous cash prize for the winner. By the way, the same combination also won the Puissance in 2015. AONACH 2016 – Now in its fourth year, Aonach goes from strength to strength. The Saturday closest to St Patrick’s Day is firmly cemented into the Connemara calendar, into the bookings at Charles Sturt University, and into the hearts and minds of the growing number of stalwart supporters. This year’s Irish Ambassador was Tom MacLochlainn, President of the CPBS. Tom and his son, Eamonn, in Australia for a ‘tourist ‘ trip (Sydney, Uluru, the Nullarbor etc) managed to include Wagga Wagga in their itinerary. Because Tom was in town on Friday, the programme was extended to a ‘Talk by Tom’ at the Commercial Club on that night. This was positive and informative in both of its sections, the one on the implications of the most recent Irish report on Inspections, and the other on the social factors which have influenced the development of the pony in Ireland. Undoubtedly the hardest worked person on the day was West Australian Diane Bennit who, on Friday, built the courses, and, on Saturday, both stood as an Inspector and then judged all of the jumping classes. The officials and the competitors appreciated both her professionalism and her enthusiasm. Aonach runs on volunteers and sponsors. Many of the volunteers, such as marshall, Mal Welsh, and announcer Christine Hill, are not directly connected with Connemara ponies. The Dressage judges were both volunteers. The Horse Trials Club and the Dressage Club both loaned and delivered and erected equipment – and then returned it to their bases at the end of the competition. Sponsors this year included Horseware Ireland who gave the Champion rugs and saddle cloths for all the jumping classes; Saddleworld who gave the saddle cloths for all of the Dressage; Horseland who once again sponsored the Smartest on Parade with rugs for both Under Saddle and In Hand; Powderbark Stud who supplied the rosettes for the Photography; Fine Equine Design Horsehair Jewellery; Clover Connermara Sporthorses; and Dromara Park Connemara Stud. We now have a list of ponies which have been to all four Aonach events: CSU Sky High Diamond (formerly CSU Cullinan); CSU Lyrebird; CSU Red Robin; Glenormiston Celtic Pride; Glenormiston Finn McCool; Gneevebrack Storm; Sugargum Sirocco. May they all – and the ponies who have now notched up three years in a row, and the ponies who have come twice, and the ponies who just discovered Aonach in 2016 – continue to enjoy the day with their riders into the future. 2 RESULTS 1 SMARTEST ON PARADE Sponsored by Horseland, Wagga Wagga Under Saddle Sugargum Uabba Lola Fairlie Riverdance Gneevebrack Storm In Hand Sugargum Richenda Celtic Sir James Glenormiston Celtic Pride Lydia Alston Kate Robertson John Bromfield Janene Leslie Lydia Alston Kirsten Volz 2 YOUNG HANDLER Jason Smith Lydia Alston Hope Masterson Jessica Matthews and Brideh Masterson 3 DRESSAGE All classes sponsored by Saddleworld, Wagga Wagga 1.2 CSU Lyrebird CSU Sky High Diamond Glenormiston Finn McCool Glenormiston Celtic Pride Wychwood Lily 1.2 Cyber Monahan Nougat Glenormiston Dundrum Glenormiston Adare 2.2 CSU Sky High Diamond Gneevebrack Storm Sugargum Blossom CSU Red Robin Wychwood Lily 3.2 Gneevebrack Storm Preparatory B – Restricted Age – On site Glenormiston Finn McCool Capparis Ryanne Sugargum Sirocco Preparatory B Restricted Age – Cyber Glenormiston Dundrum Glenormiston Adare Paige Gready Kirsten Volz Rachel Creas Kirsten Volz Aaron Oldaker Victoria Strickland Emily Sheridan Emily Sheridan Kirsten Volz John Bromfield Nicola Smith Madeline Oldaker Aaron Oldaker John Bromfield Rachel Crease Anne White Janene Leslie Carlisle Sheridan Carlisle Sheridan 4 LOOSE JUMPING Sponsored by Horseware Australia 14.hh and under Sugargum Sirocco Sugargum Las Vegas Celtic Sir James Sugargum Uabba Lola over 14 hh CSU Lyrebird Glenormiston Finn McCool Garnet Time and Tide Sugargum Blossom Capparis Ryanne Janene Leslie Jason Smith Lydia Alston Lydia Alston Paige Gready = Rachel Crease = Sally Harding Nicola Smith Anne White 3 5 WORKING HUNTER Sponsored by Horseware Australia 14.hh and under Sugargum Sirocco Sugargum Las Vegas Sugargum Uabba Lola Boonahburra Abbeylark Garnet Silhouette Celtic Sir James Over 14.hh Garnet Time and Tide CSU Red Robin Sugargum Blossom Capparis Ryanne CSU Lyrdbird Madeline Oldaker Jason Smith Lydia Alston Madeline Smith Hope Masterson Lydia Alston Sally Harding Madeline Oldaker Nicola Smith Anne White Paige Gready 6 TABLE A SHOWJUMPING Sponsored by Horseware Australia 60 cm Gneevebrack Storm Celtic Sir James Boonahburra Abbeylark CSU Red Robin Capparis Ryanne 85 cm Wychwood Just In Time Celtic Sir James Sugargum Blossom John Bromfield Lydia Alston Madeline Smith Madeline Oldaker Anne White Alice Dawkins Lydia Alston Nicola Smith 7 PUISSANCE SHOWJUMPING Sponsored by ARC Plastering CSU Sky High Diamond Glenormiston Finn McCool Wychwood Just In Time CSU Lyrebird John Bromfield Rachel Crease Alice Dawkins= Paige Gready= 8 PHOTOGRAPHY Sponsored by Powderbark Connemara Stud, York, WA. 1.Annette Condie 2.Emily Sheridan 3.Emily Sheridan 4.Brooke Allan 5.Brooke Allan Notable Mentions: Di Watt, Brigid Snow, Cecilie Springer (2), Cheryl Heynemann (2). Ponies stretched up one side, across the end and down the second side of the covered arena. Because of the angle of the sun, photography was very difficult on the second side! Some of our visitors – Tom MacLochlainn, President of the Connemara Pony Breeders Society; Vicki Plummer, Secretary of the CPBSA; Councillor Yvonne Braid of Wagga Wagga City Council; Diane Bennit, from WA who judged all jumping events, and Zita Denholm, organiser of AONACH. Youngest rider of the day Brideh Masterson, on Heartland Belle. Hope Masterson on Garnet Silhouette. Hope, having her second visit to Aonach, participated in most classes, was third in the Young Handler and gained a placing in the Working Hunter class. Louise Bourchier and her daughter Caitlin brought two fillies for inspection. Louise and Caitlin have been at every Aonach. 5 Eldest rider on the day (by a considerable margin) Anne White riding Capparis Ryanne. The pair took out placings in Dressage, Loose Jumping, Working Hunter and Showjumping. Stalwarts par excellence: These two riders and these two ponies have been at every Aonach - Janene Leslie and Sugargum Sirocco and Madeline Oldaker with CSU Red Robin. Red Robin, then still owned by CSU was ridden by John Bromfield at the first Aonach Sally Harding and Garnet Time and Tide – Sally’s first time at Aonach. With a win in the Working Hunter class and a placing in Loose Jumping, we hope that the pair is encouraged to return in 2017. 6 Brothers meeting – Dun Manus Peadar and Dun Manus Capricorn, both by Colmaur Kasey out of Celtic Seadrift. The Wychwood Willy Wagtail ponies at Aonach 2016. L to r: Wychwood Just In Time (Alice Dawkins), CSU Red Robin (Madeline Oldaker), Wychwood Lily (Aaron Oldaker), CSU Lyrebird (Paige Gready, most successful debutante), CSU Sky High Diamond (Kirsten Volz). Aaron Oldaker and Lydia Alston. Youngest ‘Stalwart’ of Aonach, Lydia Alston on Sugargum Uabba Lola in the Parade. Lola won Smartest on Parade and was placed in Working Hunter and Loose Jumping. Riding Celtic Sir James Lydia had placings in Loose Jumping and Showjumping. As well as competing and gaining placings in both dressage and jumping, Aaron supplied the PA system for the event and, with his wife, Madeline, brought the day to a close with their lovely version of The Irish Blessing... ‘May the road rise up to meet you....’ 7 John Bromfield on Gneevebrack Storm in the 3.2 Dressage Test which they won. Storm placed second to CSU Sky High Diamond in the 2.2, and won the 65 cm showjumping in a thrilling round against the clock. The upshot of the day was that Storm and Sky High Diamond divided the honour of Most Successful Dressage Horse and Most Successful Purebred. CPBSA Committee members watching on CSU staffer Kate Robertson with 2-yr-old Fairlie Riverdance (by Glenormiston Celtic Pride) was second in the Smartest on Parade. Kate, committee member of the Wagga Horse Trials which made jumping equipment available for Aonach, also worked hard behind the scenes delivering and returning equipment. Wagga Dressage Club made arena equipment available and it was delivered and set up by John Bromfield and his partner Nicole Whittaker. 8 Preparations – Annabel Bowcher neatly at work painting jump rails. She made the suggestion that anybody who chipped paint during the competition should be given the job of doing the touch-ups. This event capably organised by Zita Denholm has continued to go since its inaugural event. There were a large number of purebred and partbred ponies present and this year Tom MacLochlainn, president of the C.P.S. gave a compelling talk on the development of the Connemara pony. In Victoria, there have been a number of ponies relocating to new homes around the state and interstate. At Boonahburra stud, B Molly Molone has travelled north, while two youngsters, B. Bonney and the B. Jack Murphy are now resident in central Victoria. Monahan Quando Quando, the stallion by the evergreen Ben Dhui Diccon, has a new home in Queensland. Newlands Rockfleet continues his career in harness with new owners, a family in Gippsland who also have a strong interest in showjumping. Our thoughts are with Melanie, Di and Peter Brown who had the misfortune to lose Ballantrae Flora. Flora or Lucy as she was affectionately known was not only a versatile mare for both young and older riders, she was a family favourite and the foundation mare for their stud. Lucy’s daughter Greenlich Rebecca and granddaughter Greenlich Guinevere will carry on Lucy’s line. Janna Heard and her husband Rob Harris recently welcomed their son, Thomas into the world. Kelly and Luke Dodds welcomed a sister for Lachlan, Madeleine Emily. Our best wishes to both families. The Barwon Region Activity Group is organising their signature event, the Pony/Horse Sports Day to be held at Leighdale Equestrian Centre on May 29th. Jayne Ramaker has been busy finalising arrangements and she can be contacted for information regarding the day’s program. Lucy Doodt, (known for her performances with Somerville Pollyanna) has taken to her racing career as a jockey with aplomb. Now riding thoroughbreds, Lucy has already scored several wins early in her career. We look forward to hearing news about members and their ponies so please send your contributions for the Winter E-Bulletin. Ingrid Rowe Please use the following link to the Connemara Pony Discussion Document and provide your feedback to Karen Holloway at [email protected] http://www.cpbs.ie/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Connemara-Pony-Discussion-Document-October-2015.pdf If you know of quiet pony that would be suitable for use by the RDA please let the Secretary know. 11 Expression of interest in the Secretariat/Treasurer position Sadly Vicki and Bob Plummer are wishing to retire as our Secretary/Treasurer and Webmaster – it will be very difficult to replace these passionate Connemara treasures who have worked tirelessly to maintain and improve the CPBSA to run efficiently and effectively.
