Bericht des Präsidenten
Oktoberfest ist wieder
da - diese wunderbare
Zeit des Jahres wo sich
jeder bemüht, so schnell
wie möglich alles zu erledigen, für das größte
Fest des Jahres! Oktoberfest im Concordia
Klub ist nun im 43sten
Jahr und es sieht aus als
wenn wir wieder voll
ausverkauft sein werden. Der Kartenvorverkauf geht gut voran,
noch besser als im Vorjahr und wir wollen
nur hoffen, daß wir dieses Jahr alles problemlos überstehen werden.
Oktoberfest Inc. will dieses Jahr mit Hilfe
der Festhallen versuchen, einen finanziellen Aufschwung zu erreichen. Sie haben zu
diesem Zweck ein Komitee gegründet um
mit Hilfe der Mitglieder der Festhallen neue
Ideen auszuprobieren, die neues Einkommen verschaffen. Da der Concordia Klub das
größte und wichtigste Mitglied ist, werden
wir finanziell davon am meisten betroffen.
Obwohl der Concordia Klub freiwillig mithelfen wollte, hat man uns leider aus diesem Komitee ausgeschlossen. Als man die
neuen Vorschläge des Komitees den Präsidenten der Festhallen vorlegte, waren wir
die einziegen, die mit diesen neuen Vorschlägen nicht einverstanden waren. Aus
diesem Grunde ist der Concordia Klub momentan nicht sehr populär, doch hoffe ich,
daß man neue Verhandlungen anstreben
kann, um einen Kompromiss zu schaffen,
der jedem gerecht sein kann.
Wie ich mir schon dachte, hat man uns
wieder ein Hindernis in den Weg gelegt in
Bezug auf die “re-zoning” der Farm. Einige

die Campers glaubten, im Recht zu sein. Die
Kanuten beschwerten sich bei der zustehenden Behörde und dadurch ist für uns ein
neues Problem entstanden. Der Nith River
ist ein schiffbarer Fluss und aus diesem
Grunde ist das “Department of Fisheries
and Oceans” in Ottawa dafür zuständig.
Aus diesem Grunde müssen wir nun einen
markierten Umweg um die Brücke bauen.
Das könnte jedoch in der Zukunft zu
unserem Vorteil werden - darüber werde
ich bei unserer Jahreshauptversammlung
etwas mehr erklären.
Wir hatten eine gute Anzahl von Mitgliedern bei unserer Halbjahresversammlung
und alles ging glatt vonstatten. Wir sind am
Ziel mit unserem Haushaltsplan und es
sieht so aus als werden wir es eventuell
übertreffen.
Am Samstag, den 6. November ist unser
137. Stiftungsfest und ich hoffe, dass viele
von Euch bei dieser Feier mit babei sein
werden. Am folgenden Samstag, den 13.
November hat dann die Mardi Gras ihre
große Veranstaltung. Kommt doch, macht
mit und füllt die Halle.
Am Sonntag, den 14. November treffen wir
uns alle wieder auf dem Woodland Friedhof
zum Volkstrauertag. Anschließend gibt es
Kaffee und Kuchen im Alpen Klub. Wie in
vergangenen Jahren ist dies der Tag, an dem
wir die Menschen ehren, die für uns ihr
Leben gelassen haben damit wir eine
bessere Zukunft haben.
Ich freue mich viele von Euch beim
Oktoberfest, beim Stiftungsfest und bei der
Margi Gras Veranstaltung begrüßen zu dürfen.

President’s Report
It’s Oktoberfest, that wonderful time of the
year where we all scramble like crazy to get
things done for the biggest celebration of the
year. Oktoberfest, in its 43rd year at the
Concordia Club, is shaping up to be another
sold out event. Our ticket sales are well
ahead of last year, and let’s hope we come
through this year’s event without any problems.
Oktoberfest Inc. has been looking for ways
to raise additional revenue for their activities with the support of the Festhallen. As a
result, they formed a task force including
members of the Festhallen to generate some
new ideas to increase revenue for Oktoberfest Inc. As the largest and most important
contributor to the success of Oktoberfest,
any new financing initiatives would affect
the Concordia Club the most. Unfortunately, even though the Concordia Club volunteered to participate, we were left off this
task force. When the recommendations of
the task force were presented to the hall
operators, we were pretty much alone in not
falling into line with the recommendations.
Needless to say, the Concordia Club is not
the most popular these days, but I do hope
that through further negotiation a compromise can be found to the satisfaction of all.
Just as I thought we were coming to the end
in the application process to get part of the
Farm re-zoned, another obstacle has presented itself. A few canoeists made their
way down the Nith River, and as they came
upon our bridge, they had to find a way
around it. Some campers pointed out to
them that they were trespassing on private
property. The campers probably thought
they were doing the right thing, but it backfired. The canoeists complained to the
Township, and now another problem has to
be addressed. The Nith River is deemed to
be a navigable river and therefore falls
under the jurisdiction of the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans in Ottawa. We are
now required to build a clearly-marked
portage around the bridge. However, it
could be that in the long term this might be
to our benefit, which I will explain at the
Annual Meeting.
We had a great turnout at the Semi-Annual
meeting and everything went smoothly. We
are on track to meet our budget for the year,
and might even surpass it.
Please do join us as we celebrate the
Concordia Club’s 137th Anniversary on
Saturday, November the 6th. Then on
Saturday, November the 13th, the Mardi
Gras Group has their great celebration of
4x11. Why not join them and fill the hall?
On Sunday, November the 14th, is the
Remembrance Day Ceremony at Woodland
Cemetery, followed by coffee and cake at the
Alpen Club. As in years gone by, this is the
time when we remember all those who gave
their lives for a better future for all of us.

Oktoberfest, Stiftungsfest and the Mardi
Gras celebration!

Der Geschäftsführer berichtet
Oktoberfest
Vorbereitungen für’s diesjährige Oktoberfest laufen
schon seit Mitte August auf
Hochtouren. Es geht darum, alle unsere Gäste von
nah und fern absolut zufriedenzustellen. Schließlich und endlich möchten
wir allen unseren Gästen
ein paar schöne und erlebnisreiche Stunden
im Klub anbieten, damit man sich gerne
daran erinnert und vielleicht auch in den
Folgejahren wieder zum Oktoberfest
kommt.
Wenn man 250 zusätzliche Mitarbeiter
sowohl einzuweisen, einzulernen als auch
zu “betreuen” hat, ist das gar nicht so einfach, denn es nimmt einiges an Zeit und
Aufwand, bis sich alles eingearbeitet hat!
Bevor alles reibungslos funktioniert, ist oftmals das Oktoberfest schon fast vorbei,
Für gutes Essen und Getränke ist wieder
gesorgt und natürlich spielt die Musik mit
alten und neuen Oktoberfest Melodien.
Tanzgruppen und andere Unterhaltungseinlagen sind ebenso mit im Programm eingeschlossen. Hinzu kommt dann natürlich
noch die Mithilfe unserer Untergruppen,
die durch ihre verschiedenen Aktivitäten
und Spielbuden das Zelt ganz besonders
bereichern, alles bunt, farbenfroh und vor
allem erlebnisreich für jedermann gestalten.
Da kann es einem doch gar nicht langweilig
werden!!
Küchenchef Andreas Christophersen und
seine Mitarbeiter schaffen fieberhaft an all
den für eine Küche typischen Vorbereitungen, damit auch ja alles im Küchenbereich

klappt. Der Kartenvorverkauf war in diesem
Jahr weit besser als im Vorjahr! Unser Internet Verkauf von Karten hat sich auch in
diesem Jahr weiterhin gesteigert und wir
sind froh und glücklich, dass sich diese
Maßnahme so gut bewährt hat! (eigentlich
mache ich mir schon Sorgen, denn die
Karten verkaufen sich zu schnell und lassen
nichts für Menschen, die es sich erst im
August oder Anfang September überlegen
zum Klub zu kommen) Im Moment haben
wir noch einige Karten für die Wochentage,
so - falls Sie sich kurzfristig entscheiden,
den Klub zu besuchen: Sie finden immer
noch genügend Platz.
Selbstverständlich genießen unsere Mitglieder einen anderen, besonderen Vorteil,
denn alle erhalten am Sonntag und Montag
freien Eintritt! Bitte bringen Sie Ihre Mitgliedskarte mit und zeigen Sie diese am Eingang vor (denn die Angestellten an der Tür
kennen nicht jeden)!! Am Dienstagabend ist
nur die Schenke geöffnet (bei freiem Eintritt
mit einer Spende an die Foodbank) und ab
Mittwochabend geht’s dann wieder rund: in
diesem Jahr wieder zu Gast ist Walter
Ostanek zusammen mit der Black Forest
Band! Polka. Wer Walter noch nicht richtig
kennt, hat hier eine wirklich einmalige
Gelegenheit, dies zu tun! In den letzten drei
Jahren war es ein Genuss mitzuerleben, wie
er eine durchaus jugendliche Besucherschar
sofort in Begeisterungsstimmung gebracht
hatte! Elektrisch wäre das richtige Wort! Die
Menschen stürmten zur Tanzfläche, Arme
flogen auf und ab und hiermit war die Party
so richtig im Gange, die Stimmung war einfach großartig - und das gleich von Anfang
an!! Man konnte einfach sehen, dass Walter
etwas hat, das alle Zuhörer in seinen Bann
zieht. Sein Lächeln und sein positives Wesen ist auf jeden Fall ansteckend. Ich hatte
das Vergnügen schon des öfteren mit Walter
zu sprechen und er ist einer der Menschen,
die man selten im Leben trifft: er ist nicht
nur zuvorkommend und freundlich, er ist
auch sehr positiv und anspornend. Sein Lächeln und sein guter Mut steckt einfach an!
Er ist tatsächlich eine Legende! Seien Sie
mit dabei! Erleben Sie Walter Ostanek am
Mittwochabend! Der Eintritt ist ganz normal: nur $ 9.-!!!!
Sonntagsbrunch
Immer wieder werden wir danach gefragt,
ob der Klub während des Oktoberfests oder
auch gleich nach dem Oktoberfest zum
Sonntagsbrunch geöffnet ist. Leider können
wir dies aus logistischen Gründen nicht
machen! Der Klub ist wieder ab dem 21.
Oktober zu den normalen Öffnungszeiten
zugänglich und dann ist auch der bekannte
Sonntagsbrunch zu den gewöhnlichen Öffnungszeiten zurück.
Stiftungsfest
Eintrittskarten für die Geburtstagsfeier bzw.
das Stiftungsfest des Concordia Clubs am
Samstagabend, dem 6. November sind
schon seit dem 15. September im Klubbüro
erhältlich. Karten für Mitglieder sind wie
immer nur $ 18.- (Nichtmitglieder $ 40.-)
und schließen die Cocktailstunde, das
Essen, sowie die Tanzunterhaltung zu den
Klängen des Edelweiss Trios, mit ein.
Bedingt durch Oktoberfest und die damit
zusammenhängende Umstellung im Büro,
können wir leider keine Eintrittskarten
zwischen dem 7. und 20. Oktober verkaufen.
Ich wünsche Ihnen ein schönes, sicheres
und vor allem unterhaltsames Oktoberfest!!

Oktoberfest
Our absolutely most important annual club
event is fast approaching and with all the
extra events this year we’ve been extremely
busy in getting everything ready in time.
Ticket sales this year have been very good,
especially our on line sales over the internet
increased nicely over and well above last
year!
Obviously we must be doing something
right, because tickets for the weekends are a
hot commodity and have sold very very
quickly. It makes me actually wonder
whether or not we should put some tickets
aside for latebloomers who only think of
getting theirs in August or early September.
Truly, the 1st Friday evening everybody is
happy and in a good mood, because they are
together with so many of their friends! It’s
certainly wonderful to just experience this!
Most certainly we are also talking about a
positive “Oktoberfest experience” for all of
our guests. This can only happen if all of us
pull on the same string and cooperate to
achieve this goal as a team complete with all
our groups and employees. The payback for
this effort is of course not immediate but
long term – and having a festival survive 43
years speaks volume of a long term effort!
Congratulations to everybody who contributed.
Although tickets are sold out for the weekends, there are still hundreds available during mid-week. Of course all our members
can visit their club without having to pay
admission on the Sunday and Monday of
Oktoberfest!! Please bring your membership
card along, since our staff at the door needs
to see proof (after all our door staff cannot
know all our members, as they are only tem-

porary employees hired to work Oktoberfest
- they indeed need your co-operation to
make it work smoothly and efficiently).
Tuesday during Oktoberfest we’ll only have
the Schenke open in the evening. Admission again is free, providing every guest
brings a donation to the local Food Bank!
On Wednesday night we feature Walter
Ostanek together with the Black Forest
Band! If you haven’t experienced this icon
of Canadian Polka or as he is referred to
“Canada’s Polka King” it may be high time
to do so and this night may be the perfect
opportunity. Let me tell you I am surprised
myself every year to witness how Walter
Ostanek instantaneously connects with the
“young and restless” crowd of mostly university students! They have fun from the
first song on and create an atmosphere of
pure fun being in the tent! Admission this
year is again only $ 9.- and to see Walter it
is certainly worth it!!.
Where can you get to see such a performance for only $ 9.-!!!??? His smile and positive outlook is truly contagious, genuine
and certainly connects him with the crowd
like no other! I had the pleasure dealing
with him in the past and let me tell you this
man is very special. He’s one you’ll never
forget, because he has positive charisma!
Undoubtedly he is an icon to be seen, heard
and experienced. Some others have said: for
that admission price “you just have to go,
he’s too important to miss”!!
Of course we hope even in these economically challenged times that we’ll be able to
surpass our sales of last year to make this an
Oktoberfest a memorable one!
Sunday Brunch
Every September and October we get frequent calls of people wanting to come for

brunch on Sunday during Oktoberfest as
well as the Sunday right after. Due to logistics and the nature of the Sunday (family
day) we will not be able to provide a brunch
on either Sunday the 10th nor the 17th of
October. However the club will re-open after
cleanup on October the 21st for regular
opening hours.
Club Birthday Party
Our annual Stiftungsfest or Club Birthday
Party is to celebrate the club’s birthday and
of course it’s done right at the beginning of
November, to be exact on November 6th,
2010. Tickets are available for a nominal $
18.- per member ($40.- per non member)
and have been available since September
15th. The admission price includes taxes,
gratuities, appetizers, the meal and entertainment by the well known Edelweiss Trio
Unfortunately due to organizational issues,
tickets cannot be sold during Oktoberfest
between Oct. 7th and 20st . However they’ll
be available again starting October 21st.

Concordia Eisstock-Gruppe
Am 21. August 2010 hatten wir wieder ein
Turnier auf den Condordia Eisstockbahnen.
Wie bei jedem Turnier konnten wir wieder
unsere Sportsfreunde aus Toronto begrüssen. Wir stellten vier Mannschaften zusammen. Das Wetter war perfekt, es war für die
gesamte Spielzeit bewölkt.
Alle Spieler waren sehr ehrgeizig und
kämpften um den Sieg. Nach dem Turnier
trafen wir uns wieder im Biergarten,
mussten aber nach einer Stunde in die
Schenke umziehen, da es angefangen hat zu
regnen. Trotzdem verbrachten wir wieder
einen sehr gemütlichen Nachmittag zusammen.

CONCORDIA ICE STOCK GROUP
On Aug. 21, 2010 we held our tournament
on the lanes of the Concordia Club. Like
with all tournaments, ee could welcome our
faithfull friends from Toronto again. We
could make up four teams. The weather was
perfect, is was cloudy for the whole duration of the competition. Every player gave
their best to end up in first place. After the
tournament, we congregated on the patio,
but after one hour had to move into the
Schenke, because it started to rain. We still
could spend a very relaxing and fun afternoon together.

Unsere neue Saison hat am 10. September
angefangen. Ein herzliches Willkommen an
Guenter Stoye, Helmut Fritz und Inge und
Herbert Kyowski, die mit uns dieses Jahr
kegeln. Wir kegeln jeden Freitag um 6:30
abends in der Victoria Bowl.
Jetzt steht das Oktoberfest vor uns und die
Bereitungen sind im vollen Gang. Freiwillige sind immer notwendig für unsere Bowling Booth. Bitte melden Sie sich beim Komitee an, wenn Sie aushelfen möchten.

Concordia Choir
A big thank you to all who came out to our
famous Choir Picnic and chicken BBQ in
August. We have a group of very hard working volunteers who put a lot of time and
effort into this event. A big thank you to
Willi and Irmtraut Rahn, Nick and Else
Osbelt, and Joerg and Else Schikora and
their crew of helpers for doing the famous
BBQ Chicken. It was delicious! Thank you
to Fred Trautrim for organizing a successful
Tombola. Thank you to the ticket sellers, bar
helpers, garbage helpers, and all those who
contributed with set up , and take down.
Thank you to Andre Schila, Siegfreid Klaus
and Joerge Schikora for helping with the
Wurfbude, and Naglebude. The skies
opened and the rain came down about 9
o’clock but it was surprising to see how
many stayed for the remainder of the
evening. I know our guests enjoyed many
hours of singing and dancing with the
Edelweiss Trio.
September 18th is our annual Winzerfest,
but as I have to submit this early, I’ll report
in November who our wine queen will be
this year.
Its time for Oktoberfest,where we again will
call on the help of many volunteers to set up
and take down and work in the booths. As
we are the biggest group we are lucky to
have so many who can still help.

the musical celebration for Alfred

Concordia Childrens Choir - As I reported
in September, our children’s conductor
Claudia Nieminen has regretfully stepped
down as conductor. We want to thank
Claudia and her pianist Ulrike Schmidt for
all of their efforts. We have had a successful
search and the childrens choir will be continuing under the guidance of Angelica
Werner. Practise will be on Mondays from
6:30-7:30. If you have any children or
grandchildren or friends that may be interested please call Ulrike Schmidt at 519-8880512 for details.
Concordia Mixed choir 50th anniversary
year.
I reported earlier in the year that this is the
50th year of the mixed choir. Initially it
started under the direction of George
Christophek, and shortly after the mixed
choir was passed onto to Dr. Alfred Kunz.

Alfred has written almost 1000 pieces of
music which include arrangements and
original pieces. The most performed composition is none other than ‘The Sonnet-Shall
I compare thee to a summers day’. One of
Alfred’s personal favorites is the orchestral
composition the ‘Oktoberfest Overture’. At
the age of 50 Dr. Alfed Kunz was awarded
his black belt in ‘Kung Fu’.Since then he has
not been attacked by any singers! Our musical leader is not only very accomplished in
the performing and martial arts, but also has
a keen sense of humor. Perhaps this is why
each year at our Christmas party, we regularly hand out plaques to singers for 40, 50
and even 60 years of participation. The
mixed choir has traveled Europe and across
Canada many times, and we will once again
travel to Europe in 2011.
Quiz answers- I believe the first uniform
color was green. However the archives show
a black and white picture, so I can’t be certain. Our oldest singer is Alfred Chopka,
and for the women its Herta Ghirincelli.
Both are still very active.Our youngest is Uli
Schmidt. It was Werner Metzger who rode a
pony into the Masquerade ball in 1970. He
also has the honor of the longest serving
president. Art Beier made the milk bottles
in our Wurfbude, and this year he has still
signed up for several shifts at Oktoberfest. It
was Guenter Mowinski who laid the field
stones by the flag cabinet, after the big fire.
Yes, the choir sang for the queen in 1973 as
you saw in last months bulletin.
This months Quiz question: How many

CONCORDIA CHOERE
Ein herzliches Dankeschoen an alle, die
unser beruehmtes Chorpicnic mit Haehnchenessen besuchten. Unsere Gruppe von
hart arbeitenden Freiwilligen haben dafuer
viel Zeit aufgebracht. Die Haehnchentruppe
besteht aus, Willi und Irmtraut Rahn, Nick
und Else Osbelt, Joerg u. Else Schikora und
den andren Helfern gebuehrt unser grosser
Dank, es war wieder sehr lecker. Dank an
Fred Trautrim fuer das organisieren der
erfolgreichen Tombola. Ebenfalls danken
wir allen anderen fleissigen Helfern wie
Andre Schila, Siegfried Klaus und dem
“Hammer Joerg” und den vielen Helfern an
der Bar, beim Auf und Abbau usw. Das
Wetter spielte auch mit und die Choere mit
ihren vielen Gaesten verbrachten einige
nette Stunden mit Gesang und Tanz zur
Musik des “Edelweiss Trios”.
Am 18. September begehen wir nun unser
jaehrliches Winzerfest, die Weinkoenigin
wird im naechsten Bericht bekannt gegeben.
Bald danach ist das Oktoberfest und wir
werden wieder unsere Mitglieder zur Mithilfe an unserer Spielbuden ansprechen.
Das grosse Konzert, zur musikalischen Ehrung unseres Dirigenten Dr. Alfred Kunz,
findet am 18.Oktober statt. Karten dafuer
sind erhaeltlich unter “Kunzmusic.ca” oder
bei Dana Kunz Tel. Nr. 519-662-3291, hoffe
euch dort zu sehen.
Wie schon berichtet, hat uns unsere Kinderchorleiterin Claudia Niemienen leider verlassen. Wir moechten uns bei Claudia und
der Pianistin Ulrike Schmidt herzlich
bedanken fuer ihre geleistete Muehe. Als
Nachfolgerin haben wir Angela Werner
gefunden, die den Kinderchor weiterhin
fuehren wird. Eltern, Grosseltern oder auch
Freunde mit Kindern die Interesse am
Gesang haben, wenden sie sich bitte an
Ulrike Schmidt Tel. 519-888-0512 um Einzelheiten. In diesem Jahr begehn wir das 50
jaehrige Jubilaeum des gemischten Concordia-Chors. Er fing an unter der Leitung des
Dirigenten George Christophek und kurz
danach wurde er von unserem jetzigen
Dirigenten Dr. Alfred Kunz uebernommen.
Alfred hat in dieser Zeit fast 1000 Musikstuecke komponiert, einbegriffen Bearbeitungen und originale Stuecke. Die am meisten aufgefuehrte Komposition ist das Sonnet
“Shall I compare thee to a summers day”.
Eine seiner persoenlichen Favoriten ist die
Orchester-Komposition “The Oktoberfest
Overtuere”. Im Alter von 50 Jahren erhielt
Alfred den schwarzen Guertel im “Kung
Fu” und wurde nun nicht mehr attackiert
von seinen Saengern. Unser Musikleiter ist
nicht nur koerperlich in Form, er besitzt
auch einen guten Sinn fuer Humor.
Vielleicht ist es deshalb, dass jedes Jahr
unsere Saenger fuer 40-50 und 60 jaehriges
singen mit Plaketten geehrt werden. Der
gemischte Chor reiste einige male nach
Europa und durch Kanada und wird im
naechsten Jahr 2011 wieder nach Europa
fliegen. Nun die Test-Antworten: Ich glaube
die Farbe unser ersten Uniform war gruen,
bin nicht sicher, da keine Farbbilder da
sind.
Unser aeltester Saenger ist Alfred Chopka,
und als Saengerin ist es Hertha Ghirincelli.
Beide sind noch sehr aktive im Chor.
Unsere juengste ist Ulrike Schmidt.
Es war Werner Metzger, der ein Pony zur
Maskerade 1970 in den Saal ritt. Er hat
ebenfalls die Ehre unser am laengsten
amtierender Praesident zu sein.
Art Beier machte die Milchflaschen in der
Wurfbude und wird auch dieses Jahr taetig
sein.

Guenther Mowinski war es, der die Feldsteine legte nach dem Feuer im Flaggenkabinett.
Jawohl, der Chor hat fuer die Koenigin im
Jahr 1973 gesungen.

Ilses singen in unsere Choeren? Koennt ihr
sie alle nennen?
Jetzt ist die Chance sich anzumelden und
mitzukommen auf unseren Chortrip nach
Europa. Wir fliegen nach Frankfurt am 8.
Juni 2011 und fliegen zurueck am 22. Juni
von Muenchen. Wir haben noch Plaetze im
Doppeldecker-Bus und es ist eine tolle Gelegenheit im Leben, die ihr haben koennt.

Concert- and Sightseeing Tour to some of the most beautiful places in

Leider ist der herrliche Sommer vorbei.
Hoffen wir, dass uns ein schoener Herbst
bevorsteht. Das Turnament fand nicht im
August statt. Bitte notiert euch im Kalender,
dass unser Weihnachtsfest am 27. November um 6 Uhr abends stattfinden wird.
Der Vorstand moechte darauf aufmerksam
machen, das die Gebuehr fuer die Mitgliedschaft der Tennisgruppe spaetestens
am 1. Maerz bezahlt werden muss, sonst

Frauengruppe
The summer is over now, but what a beautiful one we had. On Wed. 7. July the Ladies
Group had their annual picnic out at the farm
at the pavilion. We had Kaffee & Kuchen that
was provided by the ladies. Later, we had
lots of different salads that were also brought
by the ladies and with that delicious
Schnitzel & German Wieners that were made
in the Basler Kitchen. Afterwards we played
bingo & then it was time to go as the rain was
starting to put a damper on things. All in all
we had a good time & everyone went home
with a full stomach.
On Wed. 25. August the Ladies Group went
on their yearly outing. This year we went to
the Jordan Village where we toured Lincoln’s
Jordan Historical Museum. We could then
browse through the many shops, have a picnic or munch at any one of the restaurants.
Our next stop was at the Bird Kingdom at the
Niagara Falls Aviary. There we saw over 400
different kinds of beautiful birds. After some
free time to walk along the river or eat an ice
cream, as it was very hot, we went on to our
next destination.
“OH CANADA EH?” Yes, that is where we
went. It is a dinner musical that is very entertaining. The meal was all Canadian and the
music was only from Canada. All in all it was
quite entertaining & hilarious. This is a great
place for all ages. Everyone went home in
good humour.
Our next meeting will be on Wed. 29. Sept.
We will then be giving out your time schedule and badges for Oktoberfest. If you can’t
make it that night, please have someone from
the group pick it up for you. If you have any
questions regarding Oktoberfest please call
Ingrid Fischer or Mary Stammwitz.

In the meantime don’t forget to work on your
projects for the Ladies Group Bazaar, which
might seem a long time away, but has a way
of creeping up very quickly.

We hope that members enjoyed the visit for
September to Connestoga Lake, “Floral and
Hardy Gardens”. There will be no October
meeting, of course, due to Oktoberfest activities. This is a time where many of us are
busy preparing our gardens and tools for
winter and can use the extra time. Please
watch for the announcement regarding the
November meeting in the next bulletin.

Dieses Mal trafen wir uns schon am ersten
Tag des Monats in der Weinstube. 17 Mitglieder waren anwesend. Fred begruesste
uns alle recht herzlich. Jetzt faengt fuer die
Mitglieder und besonders fuer den Club
eine turbulente Zeit an. Ein Fest hoert auf
und das naechste ist schon gleich da. Wir
haben einen heissen Sommer erlebt und
jetzt freuen wir uns auf die schoenste Jahreszeit, den Herbst. Die Luft wird jetzt nicht
mehr so lauwarm sein, die Blumen wollen
mit Gewalt noch ihre Farbenpracht zeigen
und die Blaetter an den Baeumen werden an
den Spitzen schon bunt. Nachts kann man
jetzt wieder die Fenster offen lassen und
man schlaeft entschieden besser.

Wir beschaeftigten uns eine ganze Weile mit
diesen schoenen Briefen die die Rentner
jetzt aus Deutschland bekommen, wo unser
Vater Staat aus der alten Heimat uns auf einmal versteuern will, und das sogar rueckwirkend. Da koennen wir uns alle noch auf
etwas vorbereiten.

sind Wolfgang Midspel-Beyer und Ursula
Harfmann. Auch ohne musikalische Begleitung wurde das Happy Birthday Lied gesungen und danach gab es leckeren Kuchen.

Campers
It has been quite awhile since our last report
but in all fairness to the last committee we
really only camp in the summer and in the
winter we hibernate. The campers are alive
and well and the Concordia Farm hasn’t
looked better.
The campers had their annual meeting on
Sunday August 22nd at the pavilion.
Approximately 69 campers were in attendance. One of the main topics discussed
was the approval of the camp ground. Werner Schlueter assured us that there are just a
few more final inspections and we will be
approved. There was a lot of work done out
at the trailer park this summer and now that
we have cleaned up these problem areas, it
seems an approval is imminent.
We also had our elections and there were
quite a few changes to the committee. Your
new camper’s committee is: Reiner Schulz
(President) , Bruce Emmerson, Mario Lulay,
Michael Matich, Kyla Pfister, Andrew
Sauer, Alexandria Thoene, Michelle Zimmer and Steve Zimmer. Your new president
is Reiner Schulz. Congratulations to all of
you and thank you for volunteering.
All of the campers would like to thank the
past campers’ committee members for all
their hard work and making the camp
ground a better place. Steve Richtarisch was
instrumental in setting up Facebook for the
campers, and creative in efforts to increase
funds in the campers’ account. It was Steve
and his committee that secured a booth for
the campers’ group at Oktoberfest, and have
put on incredible fireworks displays on
Canada Day each year. They also developed
some fun campers’ evenings with card

games, got TV’s for the World Cup and made
some fun pot luck and pig roast events.
We could use volunteers for the booth at
Oktoberfest. It is a simple game and lots of
fun to work in the booth. We only need two
people at a time, so with all the campers out
there, it only make a single shift for each
pair. Please call and set aside a few hours to
help the group, Reiner Schulz – 699-6133.

German Pioneers Day 2010
Eleven years ago, the Ontario government
instituted German Pioneers Day to recognize the achievements of German pioneers
in shaping Ontario’s development. This
year, the German Pioneers Day event will
take place on Oct. 12, 2010 in the rotunda of
the Kitchener City Hall, 200 King St. W.,
Kitchener. The formal program begins at
5:00 p.m.
The Schoerg and Betzner families were the
original Mennonite settlers in Waterloo
County.
For over 200 years German immigrants
found their way to Waterloo County. A big
portion of the population in Kitchener and
the surrounding municipalities are of
German descent.
The Heffner family, originally from
Hungary, used the early trades training and
experience to develop an extremely successful business and have become a major
contributor to regional arts and German culture.
They left difficult circumstances behind to
build a new life in Canada for themselves
and their children. They were guided by
principles of faith, found strength and comfort in the practice of their cultural traditions, and applied their work ethic, skills,
and enterprise to develop Waterloo County
and Ontario. Thus they helped shape the
character of our region as a confident, tolerant, and multicultural community with all
its wonderful diversity and agricultural
resources and riches.
This year, the German Pioneers Day committee is recognizing two early and two
more recent pioneers.
The Scholtes family, from Siebenbuergen in
Romania became leaders in the development of musical and choral entertainment
and the preservation of German heritage.
We invite you to attend this celebration of
our German heritage as members of the
third largest ethnic group in Canada.
In this ceremony, we will remember our
heritage and look with confidence to our
shared future.

Outdoor Group
The Outdoor Group held a meeting at
Home-On-The-Range (HOTR) in August. It
was our annual Corn Roast/Oktoberfest
Sign-Up/Semi-Annual Meeting. Thanks to
all those who signed up that day for a shift
or two at Oktoberfest. With both booths, we
need 5 people per shift, so let’s all come out
for it and have a good time. Thanks to
Ursula Thoene who husked 10 dozen corn
that day!

Pfister, Andrew Sauer, Jim Schnarr and
Steve Zimmer, Directors. It’s an exciting
new group and there are lots of fresh ideas
coming out at the meetings.
Many, many thanks to Laurie and Harry
Beyerle who have been on the committee for
so many years, and done so much to nurture
and preserve the Outdoor Group. We will
be looking to them frequently for advice and
ideas.
This summer, the HOTR has been opened to
the campers on weekend evenings. Mario
Lulay donated a ping-pong table and dart
board and the youth at the farm have been
playing music and having fun. On the
Labour Day weekend, we opened up for a
euchre tournament Saturday night and a
poker tournament on Sunday night. Thanks
to Tammy Lynn Shantz for loaning us her
Wii and Mike Matich for the projector,
which allowed for some fun games of Wii
Bowling for the young and not-so-young.
With the weather being so up and down this
year, having the facility open was a good
idea which the campers appreciated.
The Outdoor group is looking forward to
some fun trips in 2011, and as President of
the group, I’m excited about the committee
I’m working with.
