Bericht des Präsidenten
Es ist kaum zu glauben,
dass die Hälfte dieses
Jahres schon vorbei ist
und der Vorstand bereitet
sich schon für das
diesjährige Oktoberfest
vor. Wir haben wieder
einen neuen 5-Jahresmietvertag mit Regal für
das Zelt unterschrieben.
Zum Eintittskartenvorverkauf an unsere
Mitglieder war wieder ein grosser Andrang,
ein Zeichen, dass wir wieder ein erfolgreiches
Oktoberfest erwarten können. Allerdings,
beim “Online” Verkauf der Eintrittskarten war
die Anfrage so gross, dass die Computer es
nicht verarbeiten konnten und an Streik gingen. Vielleicht gehöre ich auch schon zum
alten Eisen und hab kein Vertrauen jemanden
meine Kreditkartennummer am Computer zu
geben. Inzwischen haben wir hoffentlich
dieses Problem gelöst.
Die Eröffnung unseres Biergartens, mit Unterhaltungs-Musik von der Transylvania-Hofbrau Blaskapelle war wieder einmal sehr
schön und gut besucht bei herrlichem Wetter.
Es scheint, das wir im nächsten Jahr noch
mehr Tische aufstellen müssen, damit alle
einen Sitzplatz finden.
Inzwischen war Vaterstag und ich hoffe, ihr
wart alle dabei auf der Farm (Home on the
Range) oder beim sonntäglichen Brunch in der
Schenke.
Bitte informiert euch über die Veranstaltungen
und Picknicks unserer Gruppen auf der Farm
und unterstüzt diese.
Die diesjährige Halbjahresversammlung findet
am 29. August um 19:30 in der Halle statt.

BERICHTIGUNG: BONFIRE ON THE FARM
Please look at the Clubs’ Calendar for the dates
of the various Group Picnics and come out to
the Farm to support the Groups.
Zuallererst möchte ich mich bei Steve Zimmer über den Anhang meines Berichtes im
letzten Nachrichtenblatt entschuldigen. Es
war nicht meine Absicht, Steve Zimmer zu
beschuldigen dass er das Feuer angezüdet
hatte. Der Law Enforcement Officer Mr. Derek Wallace gab uns in seinem Bericht zur
Kenntnis, das Steve angeblich das Feuer
startete. Diese Beschuldigung war ein Missverständnis. Steve hatte sich nur mit der
Feuerwehr und Polizei zur Besprechung
bereit erklärt, wobei sein Name in deren
Report verzeichnet wurde. Bitte um
Entschuldigung, es war nicht unsere
Absicht, deinen Namen zu beschmieren.
Wir hoffen, dass es mit dieser Einsicht
bezüglich der falschen Beschuldigung kein
Nachspiel gibt.

President’s Report
It is hard to believe that half of the year 2012
is almost over and we are only months away
from Oktoberfest. The main board is already
planning and organizing for this year’s festivities. We have signed a new 5 year contract
with Regal for the rental of the tent. As in the
past, the advanced ticket sale for our members
was in big demand, and for the online ticket
sale, the demand was so great that the computers went down. This is a good sign that we
will have another successful Oktoberfest.
I hope you all had a lot of fun at the Father’s
Day celebrations on the Home on the Range or
at the Brunch in the Schenke.
Our semi-annual Meeting is on the 29th of
August at 19:30 PM. Please try to attend.
From August 16th to the 28th I will be on Holiday out of the country and in my absence Peter
Schöpke, our first Vice President, will fill in
for me. In the name of the board I wish you all
a sunny and relaxing summer.
CORRECTION AND INFORMATION FROM
THE LAST BULLETIN UNDER BONFIRE
I would like to apologize to Steve Zimmer
for accusing him of starting the Bonfire.
This false information was received from
the Law Enforcement Officer Mr. Derek
Wallace. On the Tuesday following the
Bonfire Peter Pijet and I were called to
meet with Mr. Wallace to discuss the incident. From his report we were informed
that Steve lit the fire. It turned out that
Steve came forward to speak with the Fire
Department and gave them his name for
the report, but he did not start the fire. We
should thank Steve for speaking to the
Officers on behalf of the Concordia Club. It
was not our intention to drag his Name
through the dirt. I am sorry for the embarrassment this has cost you and hope this
will clarify the false accusation.

Der Geschäftsführer berichtet
Unser Biergarten/
Gartenwirtschaft ist
offen!!
Während der Sommermonate bietet sich des
öfteren die Gelegenheit
ein paar schöne Stunden bei gutem Essen
und erlesenen Getränken in unserem Biergarten bzw. Gartenwirtschaft zu verbringen.
Nicht alleine die Bewirtung macht den
Unterschied, nein entscheidend ist auch
hierbei der „Wohlfühlfaktor“, denn
schließlich soll sich die ganze Arbeit mit
dem Blumengarten auch ganz besonders
lohnen! Unser guter Matthias, Karl Braun,
Stefan, Dieter, Horst und noch einige
andere, sind fast jeden morgen da und
schauen nach dem Rechten. Da geht’s dann
ums jäten, Wässern und vorher natürlich
galt es Blumen zu setzen und die Gärten
vorzubereiten. Manchmal kann man die
Männer schon morgens um 6 Uhr bei der
Arbeit finden! Viele unserer Gäste schätzen
diese Blumenpracht und bewundern was
sie so sehen. Selbstverständlich war es nicht
nur freiwillige Eigenleistung dieser Herren,
nein es gab auch finanzielle Zuschüsse aus
den Reihen unserer Gruppen, denn sonst
würde es nicht so prachtvoll aussehen. Wir
danken allen ganz herzlich, die in diesem
Jahr wieder so zahlreich mitgeholfen
haben!!
Zwar haben wir mehr Gäste zum Mittag als
am Abend, aber beklagen wollen wir uns
trotzdem nicht! Selbstverständlich bieten
wir alle unsere Speisen und Getränke auf
unserer Patio mit an. Auch wenn Sie nachmittags nur zu Kaffee und Kuchen kommen

- unser Biergarten ist genau der richtige
Platz. Unser Personal macht große Anstrengungen, alle unserer Patiogäste bestens zu
bewirten, was leider nicht immer ganz einfach ist. Es ist nämlich so, dass die Kellnerinnen neben ihrer Station in der Schenke,
auch noch für die Gartenwirtschaft zuständig sind. Das funktioniert meistens, aber
nicht immer, denn wenn viel lost ist, kommt
das System aus dem Lot - dann muss nämlich die Kellnerin innen in der Schenke als
auch draußen servieren. Die Wege sind lang
und die Kunden oft in Zeitdruck - wir verstehen das! Aber wenn unvorhersehbar,
passiert dies leider. Wir bitten deshalb um
Geduld – denn hauptsächlich passiert es
manchmal an den Donnerstagabenden, wo
sich der „Line up“ auf die Patio verschlägt
und dann kommt das Servierpersonal ins
Schwitzen! Zwar hatten wir auch schon
Kellnerinnen nur für die Gartenwirtschaft
eingeteilt, aber das hat nicht geklappt, weil
oft das Wetter nicht mitmacht oder auch die
Kunden oftmals fehlen, und so eine Schicht
will niemand haben.
Trotz allem geht es jedoch meistens ganz
gut, deshalb sage ich immer noch: machen
Sie von diesem schönen Biergarten Gebrauch, denn die Saison ist (leider) kurz!!
Party Service
Sollten Sie diesen Sommer eine GartenParty oder ähnliches organisieren, denken
Sie an den Concordia Club. Unsere Küche
bietet Ihnen verschiedene kalte Platten,
bunte Salate und andere leckere Vorspeisen
an. Wir können Sie auch mit Wegwerfgeschirr und -Bechern versorgen. Das gibt
Ihnen mehr Zeit, sich mit Ihren Gästen zu
unterhalten und reduziert Ihre Zeit für die
Planung und Vorbereitungen. Für Preise
und weitere Einzelheiten rufen Sie uns ein-
fach an! Ich bin überzeugt, dass unsere
Qualität für sich spricht.
Oktoberfest
Obwohl niemand so richtig daran denken
will, es sind nur noch 15 Wochen bis zum
Oktoberfest. Wieder hoffen wir, dass auch
unser 45. Oktoberfest wieder ein voller
Erfolg wird. Der Vorverkauf der Eintrittskarten hat im Mai begonnen und auch in
diesem Jahr geht der Verkauf wieder rasant!
Wie angekündigt fingen wir mit dem Mitgliederverkauf morgens am 9. Mai an und
konnten so ca. 120 Mitglieder zufrieden
stellen! Dies vor allem, weil in diesem Jahr
die Regeln etwas geändert wurden und wir
entsprechend mehr Tickets zur Verfügung
hatten.
Leider ging es mit unserem ersten Anlauf
des „online“ Verkaufs am 16. Mai nicht so
reibungslos. Zwar hatten wir 700 Transaktionen in der ersten Stunde, aber es gab
da eine Menge Probleme. Hauptsächlich
hatte es mit der Abwicklung der Kreditkarten zu tun, denn diese hat sich oft, bedingt
durch Sicherheitsbeschränkungen bei der
Bank verspätet, weshalb der Verkauf zu lange dauerte und dann einfach durchgefallen
ist. Später kam dann trotzdem die Bankbestätigung der Kreditkarte und so hatte der
Kunde zwar bezahlt, aber seine Tickets gingen bereits an den nächsten Käufer!! Keine
erfreuliche Situation. Ich muss mich hier
ganz besonders bei unserem Büropersonal
bedanken, denn diese haben sich so richtig
hinein-gekniet und alle Kunden per Telefon
kontaktiert, um so viel wie möglich auszubügeln. Leider war das nicht immer möglich
und so bekamen alle diejenigen bei denen
es nicht geklappt hat eine vorab Möglichkeit
Karten zu erwerben bevor die Tickets wieder zum allgemeinen Verkauf kamen. Das
bedeutete natürlich eine erneute Runde von
Telefonanrufen bei den Kunden – aber
dieser Service wurde sehr begrüßt denn
man hat uns oftmals gedankt für diesen
Service.
Im gleichen Zeitraum kümmerten wir uns
eine rundum bessere Lösung zu finden. Dabei ging es uns vor allem darum, unsere
Internet Kunden zufrieden zu stellen - und
die Verkaufsabwicklung wesentlich zu verbessern. Es sollte schließlich auch mal richtig klappen – das schuldeten wir ihnen. Am
12. Juni versuchten wir es nochmal und
alles übertraf unsere Erwartungen. Wir hatten 257 Verkaufsabwicklungen bei denen
nicht ein einziges Problem aufgetreten ist!
Hierbei werden jetzt E-Tickets verkauft, das
bedeutet, daß diese per e-mail gleich beim
Kunden ankommen und dort ausgedruckt
werden.
Am Tag der Veranstaltung werden die
Karten einfach am Eingang per Lesegerät in
einen Computer eingelesen, der dann das eticket mit seiner database vergleicht. Zugang wird dann gewährt, so lange das e-ticket „einzigartig“ ist. Danach wird das e-ticket entwertet und kann nicht mehr verwendet werden.
Mein Rat an alle ist deshalb: bitte nehmen
sie dringend Abstand, e-tickets von Kijiji
oder von anderen Personen zu erwerben,
denn die Tickets könnten Duplikate sein –
und Zutritt wäre dann nicht möglich!
Alle E-Tickets tragen den Namen des
Käufers denn dieser ist „im Besitz“ und
kontrolliert was mit den Karten wirklich
passiert. In jedem Fall zeigt sich sein Name
auf jedem E-Ticket
Zu diesem Zeitpunkt haben wir aber noch
reichlich Eintrittskarten für das lange
Wochenende, sowie für alle Tage während

der Woche! Walter Ostanek spielt am
Mittwochabend!!

Antragsformulare für Arbeit während des
Oktoberfest sind ebenso jetzt im Klubbüro
erhältlich. Wie schon in den letzten Jahren,
brauchen wir jede helfende Hand, nicht nur
im Service, sondern, und vor allem, auch
hinter den Kulissen! Lizenzierung und
Fachgebundene Ausbildung des Sicherheitspersonals sowie des Bedienungspersonals ist inzwischen eine sehr wichtige
Sache geworden (gleichzeitig auch eine
entsprechende Hürde), denn es ist wichtig
dass man rechtzeitig seine Lizenzen beantragt und auch seine Ausbildung abschließt, aber das muss rechtzeitig weit vor
dem Oktoberfest abgeschlossen sein! In diesem Jahr nehmen wir weder Bewerbungen
von Sicherheitspersonal oder auch Bedienungspersonal an, sofern diese nicht im
Besitz der notwendigen Dokumente sind.
Deshalb: sollten Sie Interesse haben, oder
jemanden kennen, der schon mal geholfen
hat oder für uns in dieser Zeit arbeiten
möchte, zögern Sie nicht eine Bewerbung
auszufüllen. Die Formulare sind im Büro
oder nach Büroschluss auch in unserer
Lobby erhältlich. Mindestalter für Bewerber
ist 15 Jahre.

FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK:
Summer time is Patio time!
Throughout the summer our patio is one of
the places to spend lunch or early supper
within beautiful surroundings – our avid
gardeners like Matt, Karl, Stefan, Dieter und
Horst and a few more, have made sure of
that.
It needs to be said again: without these volunteers and without the donations of our
groups to help with the cost of the plants it
certainly would never look as pretty as it
does year after year! Everybody who contributed deserves a big “Thank you” - I certainly hope I have not forgotten anyone!!!!
To enjoy a meal or just a beverage on our
patio is a special treat and our staff strives to
make anyone’s experience a positive one!
This is by no means an easy task, because it
depends on so many different factors, such
as weather and how busy it is inside the
Schenke. Sometimes it happens on a Thursday night, that the Schenke fills up completely and then of course the customers
“lining up” find themselves a seat on the
patio. In this case we have a full patio as
well and that puts extra strain on the waitstaff as one of them has to serve outside as
well. We have tried different staffing models, however let me assure you it is a very
difficult thing to do! Should this happen,
please understand and maybe show a little
patience, we are trying our best to serve
everyone!
We are also want to encourage you to write
positive reviews in Tripadvisor or Google
for our Schenke restaurant as this helps us
on their rating system. We’ve been as high
as number 4 of all restaurants in KW, however we can only remain under the top 10, if
our customers find the time to write positive reviews!!
Party Service
In case you are planning an event at home,
in your backyard or your business and want
to take advantage of what our kitchen can
do for you: we are offering cold platters, various colorful salads and a wide choice of
mouthwatering appetizers for any kind of
social event. You may want to concentrate
on entertaining your guests and we can help
you by reducing the amount of prep work!
We also offer disposable plastic/paper dishes and beverage cups. It’s kind of “one stop
shopping for your event”. Call us for details
and competitive pricing.
Oktoberfest
Although no one wants to really think about
it yet, it’s only 15 weeks away!! Our 45th
“Concordia-Oktoberfest” and it promises to
be just as successful as the previous one!
Advance ticket sales have started early May
and have gone very well again. Our members sale brought out approx. 120 members
and due to the new regulations went without a hitch - everybody got his or her tickets!
Our first attempt with the on line sale on
May 16th was not what we had envisioned:
Although we had 700 transactions in 30
minutes, the payment process messed up by
taking too much time and timing out the
transaction. This meant that the sale fell
through and the next purchaser got these
tickets. Then later on the bank finally confirmed payment, but by that time the sale
was canceled. The delay apparently had to
do with the banks security & “credit card
fraud” settings. It was not nice!!
Thanks to our office staff who put in a lot of
time and effort contacting everybody by
telephone. Many of the sales could be
straightened out, but some others had to put
on a waiting list to be contacted before the
actual on line sales could resume. We
achieved this too and had many thankful
clients who appreciated being “looked
after”. Simultaneously we also considered
our options and looked for a better and
much more up to date solution – particularly keeping the “customer experience” in
mind, as this was paramount and most
important. By June 12th we had everything
arranged and went on line again, this time
with the new e-tickets and everything
worked flawless! We had 257 orders in 2
hours, and not a single problem!
The advantage of e-tickets is simply that the
distribution process is automatic and
instant. Each customer gets his tickets by email together with the purchase confirmation. They get a map to the event and an email reminder before the event, so they
won’t forget. The tickets are personalized,
have a scan code and will be scanned at the
door, basically admitting every unique ticket once.
We strongly suggest to anyone: Do not purchase any e-ticket through Kijiji or anyone
reselling them, as they could be duplicates
and may not get you in!! The onus clearly
rests with the original purchaser as he or
she owns and controls the scannable tickets
– if tickets are duplicated they point straight
to the person who control them – their name
is on the ticket!
To this day we still have an excellent supply
of tickets for most days and events available! Keep us in mind and get your tickets
early!! Tickets are available on line as well
an can be purchased through our web site
(www.concordiaclub.ca) when you click
“Oktoberfest” and select “Oktoberfest 2012”
and pick the “buy now” button. Of course

you can also pick up tickets in the club
office as well.
Job applications for work during Oktoberfest will also be available in the club office
as well as on our web page. As in other
years, we need a lot of staff in all departments (not only servers, but mainly behind
the scenes) Security staff legislation as well
as alcohol server regulations impact us in
significant ways by requiring security and
beverage servers to be licensed! As this cannot be done 2 days prior to Oktoberfest -it is
noteworthy, that this year again we’ll only
accept applicants with the proper licensing
and training certificates! (we won’t even
consider any applicant if they don’t have a
security license and/or smart serve).
So, if you are interested or know of anyone
who is and who would make a great contribution to your club and Oktoberfest - application forms are ready in the club office or
after hours at the reception desk door person in the lobby.

Hallo!
Ich hoffe, daß ihr alle die Sommerpause genießt. Unser Ausflug fand am 19. Mai statt.
Es gab viel zu tun und zu sehen in der Niagara Gegend an diesem Tag und das Wetter
war wunderschön. Die Show am Abend war
ausgezeichnet und das Essen sehr lecker.
Danke allen die teilgenommen haben.
Vergeßt nicht, daß unsere Saison am Freitag
den 7. September wieder anfängt.Wir heissen neue Kegler immer herzlich willkommen.

Greetings Bowlers!
Thank you to everyone who attended our
year end trip to the Niagara region on May
19th. I hope you all enjoyed the day. For
those who missed the trip, we started at the
Upper Canada Cheese Company followed
by a picnic lunch not far from the Falls. We
then had some free time in Niagara On The
Lake before our winery tours and tasting.
The day ended with the “Oh Canada Eh?”
dinner musical. Both the food and the entertainment were great. We couldn’t have
asked for a nicer day.
I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing summer. See you in September!

THE HEALTHY NICHE

Treffpunkt
Our group is currently on the go as we have
a lot of events to attend and hoping that the
weather cooperates. In May we had a small
contingent go to spagele evening at the Club
for some fine dining and the first part of
June we have our meeting and farm camp
out and soccer tournament. We are planning
on a Fahrt ins Blaue on June 23. On Canada
Day weekend a group of us will be at the
farm to celebrate and our next meeting will
be on the patio at the Club July 13. August
we hope to attend some other group events
such as the choir picnic. I wish a very
Happy Birthday to all our group members in

Es war der 100. Geburtstag der Stadt Kitchener am 10. Juni. Beide Chöre haben gesungen. Das Dorf Berlin wurde eine Stadt
im Jahre 1912. Im Jahre 1916 wurde die
Stadt in Kitchener, nach dem irisch-britischen Feldmarschall Lord Kitchener, umbenannt. Bei dieser Veranstaltung, sangen wir

It was the 100th Anniversary of the City of
Kitchener on June 10th. Both choirs sang.
The Town of Berlin became the City of
Berlin in 1912. In 1916, it was renamed the
City of Kitchener after Lord Kitchener, who
was an Irish-born British Field Marshal.

Concordia Soccer Group
As I write this memo for July, our last spring
event, the visit to Doon Heritage Museum is
just around the corner. However, we are
now into our break for the summer and
there are no meetings or visits planned for
the summer. Time to enjoy our gardens .
The Concordia Club soccer team took to the
field on a very wet June 1st evening and
after ninety minutes of domination, they
headed out for the evening to celebrate their
4-0 win.
We are hoping that in September an outing
to a garden centre in the region can be
arranged, perhaps with fall changes in mind
or bulbs for the next growing season.
October there might be the opportunity to
see butterflies , perhaps even the Butterfly
Conservatory in Guelph. This can be discussed in September.
See you back the second Wed. of September,
7:30 p.m. in the Jaegerstube.

Salewsky feierten. Es war eine tolle Feier!
Vor dem leckeren Essen, war genügend Zeit
um alte Freunde zu begrüssen und Elisabeth’s Familie näher kennenzulernen. Für
eine tolle Unterhaltung sorgten Ron, der
Mann von Elisabeth’s Enkeltochter, ein
Zauberkünstler, sowie Florence Hanson,
eine Bekannte und begabte Violinistin.

27th as our group along with the Garden
Group, Ladies Group plus many other
friends and family celebrated Elisabeth
Salewsky’s 80th Birthday. What a wonderful celebration! There was time to mingle
and socialize before a scrumptious buffet
supper was served. We were treated to some
great entertainment by Ron, Elisabeth’s
grandson-in-law, a magician, and by
Florence Hanson, a friend of Elisabeth and
fantastic violinist. Three cheers to
“Elisabeth’s Maharaja Band” that provided
such good accompaniment to a couple of
Florence’s pieces.

Fellow Outdoor Group And Concordia Members
Your committee worked very hard getting
the Home On The Range ready for the
Fathers Day picnic and they did a great job.
Steve Zimmer and Bruce Emmerson hooked
up the satellite dish at the HOTR so we
could watch the Germany soccer game.
Fathers Day was a great turn out. The rain
stayed away so we could finish our Bocce
Ball tournament. Tom and Rob Huschka
were crowned the 2012 Bocce Ball champions. Once Bocce was over most everyone
went into the HOTR and watched the Germany soccer game. It was a great game with
even a better turn out - Germany won. Jim
Schnarr made an excellent feast of spare
ribs with Reiner Schulzes ceasar salad and
Klauses famous potato salad. There was lots
of food and many refreshments were consumed. It was a great success. Thank you to
my committee for working so hard to make
this a success and thank you to all the members who joined us.
On July 8th we will be having our horse
back riding at Conestoga Outback Adventures on Northfield Drive. If you have never
gone, you are missing a great day. We usually have enough people to do two rides. We
rent their facility so we can have a barbeque
with refreshments. The horses take us
through the trails and then ride through the
Conestgo River. You do not have to be an
experienced rider to join us. The cost is
$20.00 for Outdoor group members and
$30.00 for guests. Call Mario at 519-5776005 if you would like to join us.
August 26th is the Outdoor Groups annual
meeting and corn roast. This is a free func-
tion to all Outdoor group members. We also
have Oktoberfest sign up on this day. This
will start at 2pm sharp.
September 15 is our 2nd Halloween Party at
the Home On The Range. Ken Matich will
be our D.J. and commentator. This also is
our talent show. We had a great time last
year. We have a lot of amazing talent and
lots of food, refreshments and prizes. Get
creative and come out in in some wild costume. Bring the kids out to do trick or treating. A lot of the campers got involved and
handed out treats to the little and big kids.
The trick or treating will start at 4pm and
supper will be at 530pm at the Home On
The Range. If you would like to be an
Outdoor group Member call me at the same
number in this write up.
I hope you all have a great summer and stay

TISCHTENNISGRUPPE
Die Tischtennisgruppe hatte ihr jährliches
Golfturnament und trotz der frühen Stunde
um 8 Uhr morgens, konnten es die Spieler
kaum erwarten bis es los geht. Die Sonne
schien und es war schon warm am frühen
morgen.
Nach 4 1/2 Stunden waren wir alle fertig.
Wir spielten (bester Ball) und es ging sehr
gut voran.
Die beste Mannschaft war (die Namen sind
im englischen report)
Wir hatten alle viel Spass und alle wollen
nächstes Jahr wieder spielen. Wenn andere
Klubmitglieder interesiert sind nächtes Jahr
mitzuspielen wendet Euch an Hans Malthaner. Jeder ist willkommen.
