Bericht des Präsidenten
Im letzten Sommer hatten wir viel Regen, in
diesem Jahr eine Hitzewelle. Wer die Hitze
nicht mehr ertragen
konnte, der fand Erleichterung in unserem
Pool auf der Farm, der
dieses Jahr in einem einwandfreien Zustand war.
Wir erhielten dieses Jahr
viele Komplimente für
den Pool. Ich bedanke mich bei allen
Freiwilligen, die dabei mitgeholfen haben,
dass der Pool zur rechten Zeit eröffnet werden konnte. Ihr habt alle sehr gute Arbeit
geleistet.
Bei unserer Halbjahreversammlung erwähnte ich kurz die Fortschritte für die Zonenveränderung auf unserer Farm sowie bei der
Jahresversammlung der Campers. Wir sind
immer noch nicht ganz da - aber hoffentlich
bald.
Die Vorbereitungen für unser Oktoberfest
sind nun in vollem Schwung und wir hoffen natürlich auf ein erfolgreiches Oktoberfest. Was unser Personal anbetrifft, so
gibt es dieses Jahr einige Veränderungen. In
vergangenen Jahren stellten wir viele ältere
Mitglieder als Sicherheitspersonal ein meist in ungefährlichen Stellen wie z.B. an
allen Eingängen. Die neuen Vorschriften
verlangen nun, dass auch dieses Personal
voll lizensiert sein muss. Das bedeutet, dass
ein jeder den von der Regierung vorgeschriebenen Test absolvieren muss der pro
Person $ 60.00 kostet. Wer diesen Test nicht
besteht und trozdem angestellt werden will,
der muss einen 40 Stunden Kursus am
Conestoga College mitmachen - Kosten-

punkt $ 270.00 und dann den Test nochmals machen! Mitglieder, die letztes Jahr als
Staff an den Türen angestellt waren, können
es dieses Jahr nicht mehr tun ohne voll
lizensiert zu sein. Wer also den Test nicht
besteht kann dieses Jahr beim Oktoberfest
als Sicherheitspersonal nicht mehr arbeiten.
Viele von unserem Sicherheitspersonal vom
letzten Jahr haben schon angedeutet, dass
sie diesen Test nicht machen wollen. Um
genug Sicherheitspersonal zu haben, mussten wir in diesem Jahe eine Privat-Sicherheitsfirma engagieren um auszuhelfen.
Leider bin ich für diese neuen Gesetze nicht
verantwortlich, doch für das Beste unseres
Klubs muss ich sie befolgen.
Der Herbst ist nun da und das bedeutet, dass
viele unserer Aktivitäten anstatt auf der
Farm nun im Klub stattfinden werden. Es
fängt an mit dem Winzerfest der Chöre am
Samstag, den 18. September in der grossen
Halle. Diese große Veranstaltung ist der Beginn unserer Herbst- und Wintersaison und
ist immer gut besucht. Kommt und unterstützt unsere Chöre; ihr werdet Freude dabei haben und zur gleichen Zeit beweisen,
dass ihr am Fortbestand unseres Klubs sehr
interessiert seid. Bald danach natürlich das
Oktoberfest vom 8. - 16. Oktober.
Am ersten Dienstag nach dem Erntedankfest
findet wieder der Deutsche Pioniertag statt.
Wie immer versammeln wir uns am 12.
Oktober im Kitchener Rathaus, um einige
Personen deutscher Abstammung für ihren
Beitrag zum kulturellen und geschäftlichen
Leben unseres Landes zu ehren. Kommt
doch zum Rathaus und beweist damit, dass
ihr auf eure deutsche Abstammung stolz
seid und auch auf eure Vorfahren. Für über
200 Jahre haben unsere Vorfahren dazu beigetragen das heutige Canada zu erschaffen.
So kommt doch und helft uns, dieses zu
feiern.
Vergesst nicht das Stiftungsfest am Samstag,
den 6. November. Wir haben einen aussergewöhnlichen Abend für euch geplant.!
Ich hoffe, viele von euch beim Winzerfest,
Oktoberfest, Pioneer Tag und natürlich beim
Stiftungsfest begrüssen zu können.

President’s Report
Last year’s summer may have been a wet
one, but we made up for it this year with a
heat wave. Personally, I prefer the heat over
the rain, and our pool on the farm welcomed all those who sought relief from the
high temperatures. The pool was in excellent shape this year, and received many
compliments. Thanks to all the helpers who
worked so hard to make the pool so great –
job well done•
I touched briefly on the progress of our zoning change for the farm at our Semi-Annual
Meeting, and I elaborated on this issue at
the Campers Annual Meeting. We are not
there yet, but hopefully will be there soon.
Preparations for Oktoberfest are now in full
swing, and we are looking forward to another successful Oktoberfest at the Concordia
Club. However, there is one major change
in staffing for Oktoberfest that I wanted to
explain in greater detail. In the past, some of
our more mature members acted as Security
Personnel in areas that were considered not
too dangerous. Unfortunately, the new regulations require that even members acting as
staff or door persons will have to be fully
licensed. Obtaining this license means
writing a provincially sponsored government test at a cost of $ 60.00, and if you fail,
taking a 40-hour course at Conestoga
College at a cost of $ 270.00 before you can
write the exam again. Already, many indi-
viduals have indicated that they are not
willing to take the required test, making it
necessary for us to engage an outside security firm to supplement our own staff. I
know this news will be disappointing to
those of our members who have been helping us at Oktoberfest for a very long time,
but the law simply no longer allows us to
employ unlicensed members in any security capacity whatsoever. We have no choice
but to conform to these new regulations for
the good of the Club.
The beginning of fall also brings with it a
shift of activities from the farm to the Club,
starting with the Choirs Winzerfest on
Saturday, Sept. 18th, in the Main Hall. This
event kicks off the beginning of the fall and
winter season, and is always a well-attended and enjoyable evening, so come on out
and support the Choirs. Then of course
comes Oktoberfest from Friday, Oct. 8th, to
Saturday, Oct. 16th. On Oct. 12th, the first
Tuesday following Thanksgiving, we have
German Pioneers Day. This event, held in
the Rotunda of the Kitchener City Hall, honours outstanding individuals, either born in
Germany or of German descent, for their
contributions to Canada, to our province,
and to our cities. Why not take part in this
celebration, and show everyone how proud
you are of your German heritage and the
contributions that you and your forefathers
have made to this great country? And last
but not least, don’t forget our Stiftungsfest
on Saturday, Nov. 6th . We have a tremendous evening planned for you, so please
join us•

Der Geschäftsführer berichtet
Oktoberfest
Schon seit dem 16. August
ist man dabei, das Festzelt
für das diesjährige Oktoberfest aufzustellen. Zu der
Zeit, bei der Sie dieses Heft
der „Nachrichten“ in den
Händen haben, sind bestimmt viele der
Aufbauarbeiten in vollem Gange, denn von
da an sind es ja nur so ca. 4 bis 5 Wochen!
Wie auch im letzten Jahr, findet am
Samstagabend, dem 2. Oktober wieder eine
Veranstaltung von Oktoberfest Inc. statt.
Oktoberfest Rocks the Tent nennt man diese
Veranstaltung. Hierbei treten verschiedene
Bands, welche vor allem die Jugend anziehen soll, auf. Oktoberfest Inc. hofft und
verspricht sich dabei gute Einnahmen. Sollten Sie an Karten interessiert sein, müssen
Sie sich an Oktoberfest Inc. wenden: Tel.

Bei uns geht es dann ab Freitag, dem 8.
Oktober so richtig los: bis dahin müssen alle
Vorbereitungen abgeschlossen sein, denn ab
Mittag geht es dann in unserer Schenke mit
Volldampf los. Zuerst ein gepacktes Haus
zur Mittagszeit. Um 16 Uhr beginnt man
dann schon mit dem Abendprogramm. In
der Halle und im Zelt fangen wir ab 17 Uhr
an. Es fließt dann der goldene Gerstensaft,
man ist unter Freunden prostet sich zu. Immerhin ein paar fröhliche und gemütliche
Stunden im Klub!
Wie unentbehrlich das Oktoberfest für die
Klubfinanzen ist, kann Ihnen jedes Vorstandsmitglied erläutern - “unentbehrlich”
ist auf jeden Fall der richtige Ausdruck!

Sei es in der Küche oder in der Verwaltung
oder beim Aufbau und Zelt-Innenausbau, da
spielt sich im September schon sehr viel ab.
Von gesetzlicher Seite hat man über die vergangenen Jahre allerlei Anforderungen zu
erfüllen und die Papierarbeit nimmt praktisch kein Ende. Was einmal relativ einfach
war, nimmt zwischenzeitlich viel Zeit in
Anspruch.
Eine unserer größten Herausforderungen ist
natürlich wie immer im Personalbereich:
wir suchen Mitarbeiter in allen Abteilungen, denn willige und kompetente Hände
sind immer schwieriger zu finden! Heutzutage brauchen viele unserer Mitarbeiter
einiges an Dokumenten zum Nachweis von
bestandenen Kursen, Prüfungen und Genehmigungen. Bitte bewerben Sie sich oder senden Sie uns die richtigen Leute!!
Der Kartenvorverkauf fing zwar schon im
Mai dieses Jahres an, alles ging sehr gut,
aber trotzdem haben wir im Moment noch
eine sehr gute Auswahl an Eintrittskarten
für die „Mitte der Woche“ Tage! Der Verkauf
war in diesem Jahr noch besser und vor allem schneller als im Vorjahr - vor allen Dingen deshalb, weil unser On-Line Verkauf
weiter zugenommen hat. Leider finden wir
aber auch jede Menge von Eintrittskarten,
die am Internet von unseren Mitgliedern zu
Wucherpreisen ($ 50) verkauft werden!! Es
betrifft mich sehr, wenn ich herausfinde,
wer diese Leute sind, denn sie bitteln und
betteln und erzählen von einem Notfall –
der gar keiner ist. Vielleicht sollte der Klub
selbst eine Kartenauktion am Internet abhalten – was denken Sie?
Wie in den Vorjahren genießen unsere
Mitglieder einen besonderen Vorteil, denn
alle Mitglieder erhalten am Sonntag und
Montag freien Eintritt! Bitte bringen Sie Ihre
Mitgliedskarte mit!! Am Dienstagabend
wird nur die Schenke geöffnet sein und am
Mittwochabend im Festzelt unterhält nicht
nur die Black Forest Band, sondern auch
der Gast Star “Walter Ostanek”! Da wird bestimmt jeder Polka Liebhaber besonders gut
auf seine Kosten kommen – schließlich handelt es sich hierbei um eine Legende!! Karten sind für nur $ 9 erhältlich.
Sonntagsbrunch
Immer wieder werden wir danach gefragt,
ob der Klub während des Oktoberfests zum
Brunch am Sonntag geöffnet ist. Leider können wir das aus logistischen Gründen nicht
machen. Ebenso kann am Sonntag gleich
nach dem Oktoberfest (17. Oktober) kein
Brunch stattfinden da das Großreinemachen
und der Abbau beginnen.
Stiftungsfest Eintrittskarten
Werden ab dem 15. September im Klubbüro
erhältlich sein. Karten für Mitglieder sind
nur $ 18.- und schließen die Cocktailstunde,
das Essen, sowie die Tanzunterhaltung zu
den Klängen des Edelweiss Trios und auch
die neuen Verkaufssteuern mit ein. Bedingt
durch Oktoberfest und anderen logistischen
Problemen, können wir Eintrittskarten
zwischen dem 7. und 20. Oktober leider
nicht verkaufen.

Oktoberfest
Der Klub bietet eine Kontokarte an, die im
Büro bzw. an der Bar käuflich erworben
werden kann. Mit dieser Karte kann der Besitzer seine Rechnung begleichen und die
Karte “langsam” in Teilbeträgen aufbrauchen.
By the time you read this our Oktoberfest
Tent will be set up already. As a matter of
fact the tent arrived on Monday, August
16th and setup started right away, as there
are only 5-6 weeks to do the complete setup
with all the electrical, technical, plumbing
services, stage setup, kitchen cleaning and
much more!
Der Vorteil gegenüber einer Kreditkarte liegt
auf der Hand: es kommt kein Kontoauszug
bzw. keine Rechnung ins Haus geflattert,
diese Karte ist übertragbar (kann an jemand
anders gegeben werden), die Karte ist wieder “aufladbar” und sie ist auch zweckgebunden. Als Geschenk ist diese Karte ideal,
denn gegenüber einem Geschenkgutschein
hat man den großen Vorteil, dass man auch
einen Kaffee damit bezahlen kann, denn der
Restbetrag bleibt auf der Karte stehen und
kann beim nächsten Besuch wieder weiter
benutzt werden. Man hat also weit höhere
Flexibilität. Karten sind ab $ 10.- an der Bar
in der Schenke erhältlich.

This first day of Oktoberfest will be of
course Friday, Oct. 8th where we usually get
a full house in the Schenke for lunch, then
at 4pm we continue with another event in
the Schenke at 4pm and the Hall and Tent
will open at 5pm. As always, socializing
will the the name of the game and to cheer

with some beer will be just “natural”. Be
part of it and participate! We will be here
waiting for you!!
How very important this event is for our
club treasury should be known by most
members! If you are new, then attend the
annual membership meeting and you'll be
informed! It's as important as ever - that's
why we are working hard to remain “the”
cultural attraction during the KW Oktoberfest!
Preparations are already underway, be it in
the kitchen, the administration or general
setup inside or outside: there is a beehive of
activities preparing and getting ready.
Challenge number one this year is to find
enough licensed security staff as our government has made it impossible to hire
someone and put them on a door. These
days one needs to go to a 40 hr. training
course, complete first aid, pass SmartServe
and then obtain and be in possession of a
security license before applying and working in that department. It's almost “Mission
Impossible” for this 9 day period of the year.
Because if this we have hired an outside
security company to supplement additional
licensed staff. We do not think that we'll be
able to find 90 licensed security staff on our
own. Other departments struggle also with
similar issues as government requires certification for example from food workers, or
from beverage servers. All supervisors are of
course personally liable in view of the
Occupational Health and Safety Act. (this
means in a work accident situation the
supervisor himself/herself is on the hook,
our insurance would and will not cover any
fines. There is really no leeway – our government does come down hard on anyone!
It is really a big dilemma!

So, our ever growing challenge year after
year is to staff all the various departments
with competent and trained personnel. Year
after year more and more new employees
need to be hired and training consumes
most of our prep time.
Admission ticket sales have out-done last
years sales again! The pace of sales has
exceeded last years by far and of course this
is the case since our tickets are available online. However for mid week (Sunday until
Thursday) during Oktoberfest we have still
an excellent supply of tickets available!
Unfortunately we have also discovered that
some of our members are selling their tickets on the internet for hugely inflated prices.
We have proof of these cases where tickets
are sold for $ 50 each. It's indeed very sad to
see, as these members have begged for tickets and now we see that the “emergency”
was really made up! Maybe the club should
start to auction off the tickets instead of selling them for face value – what do you think?
You, our members of course enjoy the added
benefit to be admitted free of charge on
Sunday and Monday of Oktoberfest!! Please
bring your membership card along, since
our staff at the door needs to see proof! On
Tuesday evening we will be only open in
the Schenke, however on Wednesday night
we feature a polka night with the Black
Forest Band and guest star Walter Ostanek.
“An evening of E-I-E-I-E-I-O’s“. Tickets for
that night are the only $ 9.- and are of course
available on line as well. Witness the polka
legend yourself and be part of it!!
Sunday Brunch
Every once in a while we get calls of people
wanting to come for brunch on Sunday during Oktoberfest. Due to logistics and the
nature of the Sunday (family day) we will
not be able to provide a brunch on either
Sunday the 10th nor 17th of October.

Pre Paid Account Card
Concordia “Stiftungsfest” Club Birthday
Party
In order to offer more convenience and
choice to our customers we have offer a prepaid account card for use in our restaurant.
This card can be purchased at the bar in the
Schenke and offers some substantial advantages over a credit card. For instance, since
it is pre-paid there is no credit check or
invoice to deal with. There are no additional or hidden fees and the card is absolutely
transferrable to a friend or family member.
One can use this card to pay for a coffee at
one visit and pay for a meal the next and so
on until it is used up. Of course, the card
can be re-loaded again at any time. Since it
is redeemable in our restaurant it makes the
ideal gift for everyone who visits the club on
Tickets for this event will be available from
September 15th. Price per ticket is $ 18.- for
members. This (subsidized) price includes a
free Cocktail hour, the dinner, entertainment to the sounds of the Edelweiss Trio as
well as the new HST. Due to Oktoberfest we
will not be able to sell admission tickets for
this event between October 7th and 20st .

Unser Vaterstag Golftournament war gut
besucht, der Himmel lachte mit uns. Anschliessend trafen wir uns mit unseren

Es ist Anfang August und wir haben unser
Sommerpicknick hinter uns. Es war sehr
schoen und der Wettergott hat auch mitgespielt, nach kurzem Regenschauer lachte
die Sonne wieder. Die Bocca-Spiele konnten
im Freien gespielt werden. Das Essen war
super und reichlich und die Salate und der
Kuchen war einfach himmlisch, vielen
Dank an die Frauen. Jetzt muessen wir
schon wieder an das Oktoberfest denken,
und wir hoffen dass jeder ein paar Stunden
fuer die Gruppe am Oktoberfest arbeiten
kann, so sagt dem Henry bescheid ,wenn ihr
arbeiten koennt.

Our Fathers day golf tournament out in
Brookfield golf club was a success. Hans

Malthaner organized the games. We thank
you Hans. It was really super. Afterwards
we meet on the Home on the Range, it was
really nice and I remember the good old
times we had out there on the farm. We also
have our group picnic out there on July 24.
2010. Our President Henry Laube and his
wife Helen are preparing for the picnic,
which is for group members and guests. The
food will be from “Chef” Klaus and we all
look forward for the “Rips”. After supper we
have our trophy night for the winners of our
table tennis tournament . We wish you all a
nice summer.
It is beginning of August and we have our
summer picnic behind us. It was a beautiful
event and even the weather god played
along, after a brief shower the sun came out

outside. The food was super and plenty and

of thanks to our spouses. Now we have to
think again on Octoberfest, and we hope
everybody can donate a few hours for the

wie schnell die Zeit vergeht. Der Sommer ist
vorbei. Am 10.Juli fand unser Picknik bei
herrlichem Sonnenschein statt. Brigitte und
Manfred hatten uns grosszuegigerweise
ihren wunderschoenen Garten zur Verfuegung gestellt. Wir moechten uns hiermit
ganz herzlich bei Brigitte und Manfred bedanken. Jeder hatte eine gute Zeit. Inzwischen fand unser Tournament statt. Die Ergebnisse werden in der naechsten Ausgabe
bekanntgegeben. Im September ist eine Versammlung vorgesehen. Der genaue Zeitpunkt steht zur Zeit noch nicht fest. Die
Mitglieder werden benachrichtigt.

Concordia Choir
And so summer must come to an end. I hope
you all had a fabulous summer. I moved out
to Wellesley in June and had no air conditioning during the hottest days of the year.
Fortunately the farm is just down the road,
so I was able to make good use of the pool.
At the time of printing we are gearing up for
our annual chicken BBQ. I’ll report the details in October. The choir has returned to
practice on August 9th. Our first event will
be our annual ‘Winzerfest’ on September
18th. See the advertising inside for details.
This promises to be a fun evening, of eating
and singing and dancing. We will also once
again crown our new ‘Wine Queen’. Hope to
see you out there.
October - I won’t need to remind anybody
that this years Oktoberfest runs from
October 8-16th. We will once again need the
assistance of our members to setup and take
down the booths. Each member is also expected to sign up for at least one shift in the
booth. This year Christine Schwegel (along
with my help) will be looking for volunteers. The choir has also been invited to perform during Oktoberfest at City Hall on October 9th in the afternoon. Watch for more
details in the club, or from Oktoberfest Inc.
At the time of printing, we don’t have a specific time yet, but likely about 2pm. I would
like to invite everyone to come out and support this cultural event.
October 18 - “Note by Note” On Monday
October 18th at Benton St. Baptist church in
Kitchener, you are all invited to share in an
evening of musical celebration for Alfred
Kunz. This event is being organized by Alfred’s step son Christian Bellsmith. Admission is $20. Alfreds songs will be performed

by a professional 20 voice choir. I know that
Christian and the Concordia choirs are
tremendously excited to attend this event.
The list of people that have been touched by
the music of Alfred Kunz is very long, so be
sure to get your tickets early. Tickets are
available on-line by selecting the link from

Concordia Childrens Choir - we sincerely
regret to inform you that Claudia Nieminen
will have to step down as the conductor of
the children’s choir. For many years the
children’s choir has been an integral part of
our choir concerts and club cultural events.
Claudia would like to thank all her supporters, but felt that with her many other obligations she could not dedicate the amount of
the time that is needed to the children. At
the time of printing this bulletin, we are
looking into other conductors, and already
have someone for consideration. I’ll
announce any updates in October. If we find
a new conductor before then, we will post it
in the club showcase outside the Schenke.

The recent visit of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
and Prince Philip to our area (at RIM in Waterloo) can remind us that on June 28th, 1973 the
Concordia Club was invited to a brief stop over
ceremony at our Kitchener railway station in the
form of a mini concert performance by the Concordia Mixed Choir, conducted by Alfred Kunz.

June’s visit to “ Colour Paradise” was enjoyable and informative. We saw a demonstration on “Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers” to
create interesting container gardens. Most of
us could not resist buying a few things from
their marvelous selection of plants.
September’s meeting/visit will be to Connestoga Lake, “Floral and Hardy Gardens”.
We will be able to view the fall gardens and
also make purchases if desired. As the days
get shorter, we thought an afternoon visit
out and back would be the best. We will car
pool from the Concordia Club at 1:30p.m.
and perhaps some members would like to
meet for lunch in the Schenke at 11:45 a.m.
See you September 8th. There is no meeting
for October due to Oktoberfest festivities.

Unser Picknick im Juni war trotz schlechtem Anfang ein Erfolg. Es regnete als wir
ankamen und dann brach die Sonne durch
und es wurde noch ein schöner Nachmittag.
Und Joachim Nanders übernahm mit seinem Freund das Grillen und alles schmeckte vorzüglich und verlief reibungslos. Wir
danken dir, Joachim. Allerdings reicht es
zeitlich nicht für ein zweites Picknick
dieses Jahr, dafür lud Fred alle zum Picknick der Sänger am 14. August auf der Farm
ein.
Wir gratulierten unseren Geburtstagskindern für Juli und August, Jaco und Fred
Heix und Sofie Seidel. Bleibt gesund und
bleibt uns treu!!
Der Kaffee und Kuchen schmeckte mal
wieder sehr gut, das Singen klappte auch
und so war es bald 16.30 Uhr und Zeit sich
auf den Heimweg zu machen. Wir treffen
uns wieder am 1. September um 14.30 Uhr.
