wir freuen uns, Sie auch in dieser Ausgabe des BMW Driving
Experience Magazine begrüßen zu dürfen. Seine Seiten sind
erneut einer gemeinsamen großen Leidenschaft gewidmet:
der BMW Driving Experience. Hier genießen Sie Ihre ganz persönlichen BMW Momente!

to a great passion we share: the BMW Driving Experience. Here,
you can enjoy your very own BMW moments.
Und davon gab es im vergangenen Jahr viele. Seit der Eröffnung
der neuen BMW und MINI Driving Academy in Maisach im September 2012 haben wir bereits über 14.000 Kunden empfangen
und mehr als 2.000 Kundenveranstaltungen und Incentives durchgeführt. Speziell für maßgeschneiderte Firmen-Incentives bietet
das neue Gelände ideale Voraussetzungen für Gruppen mit mehr
als 400 Teilnehmern. BMW Driving Experience pur im Rahmen der
BMW, BMW Motorrad- und MINI Fahrertrainings – das muss man
einfach selbst erleben!
Reichlich Adrenalin und trotzdem viel Herz für die Umwelt, denn
das neue Trainingsgelände setzt auf Nachhaltigkeit und umweltschonenden Betrieb. Zum Beispiel wird das für die Trainings
benötigte Wasser aus einer Regenwasserzisterne gespeist und
wiederverwendet. Unser technisches Personal nutzt bereits elektrifizierte Fahrzeuge, wie den MINI E oder den BMW 1er ActiveE,
deren Strom zu 70 Prozent aus Solarenergie stammt.
Zu unseren absoluten Highlights der kommenden Saison zählen
die Einführung der BMW i Experience mit BMW i3 Fahrzeugen,
einem elektrisierenden Fahrerlebnis, die Einführung des neuen
BMW M4 Coupé als Rennstreckentrainingsfahrzeug zu Beginn
der Rennstreckensaison 2014 sowie die Erweiterung unserer
attraktiven Multiday Touren: Rechtzeitig zum Launch des neuen
BMW X5 bauen wir unser Angebot in Afrika aus und bieten neben
Namibia weitere Touren in Südafrika und Botswana an. Ein unvergessliches Erlebnis!
Wie Sie sehen, tut sich einiges rund um das Thema BMW Driving
Experience. So verrät uns Entertainer Thomas Gottschalk, was ihm
am neuen BMW M6 Gran Coupé gefällt, und die Teilnehmerinnen
unseres ersten Frauen-Fahrtrainings berichten, welche Tricks sie mit
auf die Straße nehmen.

And there were certainly many of them during the past year. Since
we opened our new BMW and MINI Driving Academy in Maisach
in September 2012, we have already hosted more than 14,000
customers and held more than 2,000 customer events as well as
incentives. Our new premises offer ideal conditions for groups of
more than 400 participants, especially for customized company
incentives. Driving Experience at its best for participants of our
BMW, BMW motorcycle and MINI driver training – you simply have
to experience it for yourself!
Lots of adrenaline and yet great concern for the environment as
the new training premises rely on sustainability and environmentally friendly operation. The water needed for training sessions, for
example, is provided from a rainwater cistern and then reused. Our
technical staff already uses electric vehicles, such as the MINI E or
BMW 1 Series ActiveE, with 70 percent of the electricity to charge
these vehicles being generated by solar power.
Some of our absolute highlights of the season ahead include the
introduction of our BMW i Experience with BMW i3 vehicles, which
is an electrifying driving experience, and the introduction of our
new BMW M4 Coupé as a race track training vehicle at the start of
the 2014 racing season, as well as expansion of our attractive offers
for Multiday Tours: Just in time for the launch of our new BMW X5,
we are expanding the list of training sessions offered in Africa. In
addition to Namibia, we also added tours in South Africa and
Botswana to our training portfolio. An unforgettable experience!
As you can see, there is a lot going on around the topic of BMW
Driving Experience. For instance, entertainer Thomas Gottschalk
lets us in on what he likes about the new BMW M6 Gran Coupé.
Or the participants of our first driving training for women talk about
the tricks they take with them to use on the road.

Eine weitere besondere Neuerung in diesem Fahrzeug
ist die One-Pedal-Steuerung. Sie ermöglicht es dem
Fahrer mitzuentscheiden, wie viel Energie sein Fahrzeug verbraucht. „Sobald Sie vom Gaspedal gehen,
tritt der Rekuperationseffekt ein“, erklärt Claudia Hürtgen, „der Elektromotor wirkt dann als Generator und
speist Strom in die Batterie ein.“ Und Robert Eichlinger, Leiter der BMW und MINI Driving Experience,
ergänzt: „Dabei ist die Verzögerung deutlich stärker
als bei Fahrzeugen mit Verbrennungsmotoren. Das
Bremspedal braucht man deshalb im Stadtverkehr oft
schon gar nicht mehr.“
Another noteworthy innovation in this vehicle is
its one-pedal control. It allows the driver to take part in
deciding how much energy is used. “The recuperation
effect sets in as soon as you let off the accelerator,”
Claudia Hürtgen explains. “This is when the electric
motor will act as a generator and feed power into
the battery.” Robert Eichlinger, Head of BMW and
MINI Driving Experience, adds: “When doing so,
deceleration is significantly greater than in vehicles
with combustion engines. For this reason it frequently
is no longer necessary to use the brake pedal in city
traffic.”

den sofortigen Vortrieb, der eintritt, wenn man auch
nur ein, zwei Zentimeter auf das Gaspedal tritt.“ Außerdem hat der BMW i3 den kleinsten Wendekreis aller vergleichbaren Fahrzeuge, weniger als zehn Meter.
Und er besitzt eine besonders leistungsstarke Lithium-Ionen-Batterie, die nach 30 Minuten bereits zu 80
Prozent geladen ist. Voll aufgeladen versorgt sie das
Fahrzeug bis zu 160 Kilometer weit mit Energie, die
natürlich nachhaltig gewonnen wurde. Nachhaltig sind
auch die verwendeten Materialien: Die Türen werden
zum Teil aus Gras und die Sitzbezüge aus recycelten
PET-Flaschen gefertigt. Die Karosserie besteht aus
Leichtbauwerkstoffen und ist so sicher und robust wie
jede andere BMW Karosserie.

BMW i3 – the first series-production electric vehicle
manufactured by a premium producer – so different.
The new motorcar has a different look and its compact dimensions and many window surfaces perfectly
meet the requirements of an urban environment. “The
i3 is truly a BMW. It allows you to experience real driving
pleasure,” so Claudia Hürtgen, race car driver and chief
instructor at BMW and MINI Driving Experience. “The
immediate propulsion as soon as you push down on
your accelerator even just one or two centimetres.”
Moreover, at less than ten metres, the BMW i3 boasts
the smallest turning circle diameter of all comparable
vehicles. In addition, it is equipped with an especially
powerful lithium-ion battery. Just 30 minutes and it is
already 80 percent charged. When fully charged this
battery can supply the motor car for up to 160 kilometres with energy that, needless to say, is generated in
a sustainable manner. The materials used are sustainable as well: portions of the doors are made of grass,
seat covers of recycled PET bottles. The vehicle body
is comprised of lightweight construction materials and
is as safe and robust as that of any other BMW.

Mit der BMW eDrive Experience bietet BMW ab Oktober 2013 als erster PremiumFahrzeughersteller E-Mobilität im Training unter der Regie erfahrener BMW Instruktoren
– für ein wahrhaft elektrisierendes Fahrerlebnis! Durch Übungen wie Beschleunigung,
Rekuperation, Slalom, Spurwechsel und Fahren auf dem Rundkurs lernen die Teilnehmer die Produkteigenschaften und damit das Handling des BMW i3 besser kennen
und werden darüber hinaus mit allen anderen Vorgängen, wie etwa dem Ladeprozess,
vertraut gemacht.
With its BMW eDrive Experience, starting in October 2013 BMW will be the first premium motorcar manufacturer to offer e-mobility taught by experienced BMW instructors
– for a truly electrifying driving experience. By way of exercises such as acceleration,

Am 29. Juli 2013 hat die BMW Group den BMW i3 der Welt präsentiert und ihn als eine Revolution bezeichnet wie seinerzeit das
iPhone. Und nun können Sie diese Revolution selbst erleben, in
Maisach auf dem Gelände der BMW Driving Experience.
At the 29th of July 2013, the BMW group presented its BMW i3 to
the world and proclaimed it a revolution akin to the iPhone at its time.
Now you can experience this revolution yourself on the premises of
the BMW Driving Experience in Maisach.
Es ist still, Sie sehen den BMW i3, steigen ein, drücken den Knopf
und es passiert ... nichts. Und doch alles. Einige wenige Kontrolllampen zeigen an, dass das Fahrzeug fahrbereit ist. Genau genommen
passiert in dem Moment, in dem der BMW i3 gestartet wird, mehr
als in jedem anderen Auto. Denn in keinem anderen Fahrzeug können Sie im nächsten Moment bei einer Berührung des Gaspedals
unmittelbar das volle Drehmoment von 250 Nm bei einer Leistung
von 170 PS abrufen. Von 0 auf 100 in 7,2 Sekunden, und das völlig
emissionsfrei. So funktioniert ein nachhaltiges Großstadtfahrzeug im
Zeitalter der modernen Mobilität.
There is no sound, you see the BMW i3, you get in, push the button and... nothing happens. And yet everything happens. A few
control lights signal that the vehicle is ready to be driven. Strictly
speaking, what happens the moment the BMW i3 is started is more
than what happens with any other motorcar. This is because there
is no other vehicle that allows you to immediately summon the
entire force of 250 Nm torque at 170 PS just by touching the accelerator. From 0 to 100 in 7.2 seconds and all that without any emissions. This is how a sustainable big-city vehicle works in the age of
modern mobility.
Beim Erlebnistraining mit dem BMW i3 geht es darum, Situationen
mit dem Fahrzeug zu meistern, aber auch darum, das neue Fahrzeug und seine vielen Vorzüge zu verstehen. „Wir bieten in unserer BMW i3 eDrive Experience zum Beispiel einen Slalom an.“ Die

Schwierigkeiten haben, den Parcours zu meistern, der BMW i3 fährt
jedoch ohne Probleme hindurch. So wie er in kleinste Parklücken
auf engstem Raum einparken kann. „Oder in den Parkhäusern“, sagt
Hürtgen. Eben in all den Situationen, mit denen Autofahrer in einer
urbanen Umgebung konfrontiert sind.

Beispiel das Fahrzeug das gleiche gute Crashverhalten zeigt wie
andere BMW Modelle. „In einem BMW i3 fühlen Sie sich wie in
einem 3er BMW, er hat die Dimensionen eines 1er BMW, die Wertigkeit eines 5er BMW und beschleunigt wie ein MINI Cooper S“,
sagt Eichlinger.

In Maisach you will also learn about acceleration and braking behaviour of the BMW i3. In addition, we lined up exercises that allow
drivers to learn how to control the BMW i3 using only the accelerator
and incipient deceleration in certain situations. All in all, BMW in
Maisach offers training consisting of six parts in one afternoon.
Und am Ende steht das Auto wieder da, ganz still, Sie steigen aus,
verarbeiten die Eindrücke des modernen Fahrens, während der
BMW i3 an einer der Ladestationen wieder Strom tankt. Und nicht
nur Sie spüren, wie ein elektrisches Fahrerlebnis bei BMW wirkt.

his car was handed over to him, would immediately recognise that
here is a man who is fascinated as much by BMW itself, as by his
additional training with Claudia Hürtgen at the BMW and MINI Driving
Academy in Maisach. It was there, on the sun terrace, that he candidly
described his feeling towards the car as – erotic.

Herr Gottschalk, wie ist es Ihnen bei dem kurzen Training gerade ergangen? Das ist eine neue Erfahrung. Ich bin ja ein Mensch, der
Extremen aus dem Weg geht, wann immer es möglich ist. Obwohl ich ein
großer Autonarr bin, liebe ich aber vor allem Prunkfahrzeuge, solche, bei
denen ich froh bin, wenn sie überhaupt anspringen. Ich liebe Autos, die
schön sind, die mich emotional bewegen, deswegen habe ich mich auch
für das BMW M6 Gran Coupé entschieden.
Was an diesem Fahrzeug gefällt Ihnen denn besonders? Die
Form zum Beispiel. Ich habe ein erotisches Verhältnis zu manchen Autos.
Erotisch? Ja. Wenn ich in die Garage gehe, muss ich jeden Tag wieder
sagen können: ‚Ja, da steht er, der ist schön.‘ Mir gefällt bei Fahrzeugen
eine gewisse Wucht, mir gefallen große Autos und solche, die einen
gewissen Stil vermitteln, und von denen gibt es immer weniger. Das
BMW M6 Gran Coupé ist so eines.
Welchen Stil vermittelt das Fahrzeug? Einen eleganten Stil, weil es
aus meiner Sicht ein Auto ist, das sich nicht nur über die Leistung von
560 PS mit einem hochdrehenden V8-Motor definiert, sondern vor allem
über die Erscheinung. Es ist diese erotische Form, die mich überzeugt.
Und auch das Fahrverhalten hier auf dem Kurs? Also ich fahre
so entspannt, ich brauche das nicht unbedingt. Aber für junge Leute ist
das viel wert, wenn sie von erfahrenen Instruktoren einmal gesagt und
gezeigt bekommen und auch selbst ausprobieren und lernen, mit welch
wuchtigem Wagen sie da unterwegs sind, welche Kräfte da entstehen, die man beherrschen muss. Es ist gut, dass man lernt, auch die

Mr Gottschalk, how did the short training session go? That was
a new experience. I’m the type of person who avoids extreme situations
wherever possible. Although I am a huge car buff, I really love vehicles
with character; the kind where I get truly excited if they actually start. I love
beautiful cars that touch me on an emotional level. That is why I went for the
BMW M6 Gran Coupé.
What is it about this particular car that you really like? The shape,
for example. I have an erotic relationship with many cars.

Slalom, drifting, braking – which exercises did you enjoy
the most? It was very interesting to see how it is possible to simulate aquaplaning with a controlled drift, as that happened to me
once, but that was somewhat less controlled. In that instance it

Slalom, Driften, Bremsen – welche der Übungen hat Ihnen besonders gefallen? Es war spannend zu sehen, wie man beim Driften
kontrolliert ein Aquaplaning erlebt, denn das ist mir schon einmal passiert, allerdings sehr unkontrolliert. Da bin ich in Deutschland im Regen
von der Fahrbahn abgekommen und habe den Wagen vorne und hinten
an die Leitplanken gesetzt, woraufhin der Kofferraum aufsprang. Mir ist
nichts passiert, aber ich hatte damals jede Menge Autogrammkarten im
Kofferraum, die dann schön verteilt auf der Fahrbahn lagen. Der ein oder
andere hat angehalten, irgendwas von ,Mei, der Gottschalk‘ gemurmelt,
eine Karte eingesteckt und ist wieder weitergefahren.
In den USA wären Sie wohl unerkannter davongekommen.
Fahren Sie lieber dort oder hier in Deutschland Auto? Das sind
zwei verschiedene Welten. Ich entwickle da drüben sofort ein Überheblichkeitsgefühl, das einem ja immer gut tut (lacht). Weil man sagt: ‚Die
können es ja alle nicht.‘ Alle, die in Amerika um einen herum Auto fahren,
sind zum Beispiel bei Platzregen tief verstört und bleiben stehen oder
fahren nicht mehr schneller als 35 Stundenkilometer. Bei mir in Malibu
kann man schon irre Dinge beobachten, beim Einparken etwa. Und den
Blinker benutzt da niemand. Aber ich fahre dort trotzdem lieber, weil es
die Raser nicht gibt. Das Fahren ist einfach entspannter, und ich fahre so,
dass ich mir nicht überlegen muss, wie ich im Notfall drifte, wie wir das
hier gerade ausprobiert haben.
Erotic? Yes. Every day, when I go into the garage, I have to be able to
say: ‘Yes, there it is and it’s beautiful.’ There is a certain power about cars
that speaks to me. I like big cars; the sort that have a certain style, which is
something we are seeing less and less. The BMW M6 Gran Coupé is just
that sort of car.
What style does the car exude? An elegant style, as in my view it isn’t
a car that is defined merely by a powerful and high-revving 560 BHP V8
engine, but rather by its look. It is this erotic style that won me over.
And the handling out there on the track? I am so relaxed when I drive
that I don’t really need it. But for youngsters it is very useful to have things
demonstrated and explained by experienced instructors and to then be
able to try them out and learn how to control the power and where it comes
in, whatever car you are driving. It is good to grasp the unpredictability of
certain situations, in order to make them slightly more predictable.
That has great educational value. It would be my wish that people didn’t
try to find the limits of their new cars on the B12, but first came here, to
Maisach.
was on the autobahn in Germany and it was raining. I left the road
and placed the car front and rear into the guardrail, causing the boot
to spring open. I was fine, but I had a bunch of autographed cards in
the boot, which then scattered themselves nicely across the road.
A few people stopped, muttered something like ‘ooh, Gottschalk’,
pocketed a card and then carried on their way.
In the US you could have got away without being recognised. Do you prefer to drive over there, or here in Germany?
It’s two different worlds. I immediately develop a sense of arrogance,
which is no bad thing (laughs). Because people say: ‘Not everyone
can do that.’ In America, the people driving around you become
completely perplexed when it pours down and either park, or drive
no faster than 35 kilometres per hour. Where I live, in Malibu, you see
some crazy things; like when people park. And absolutely no one
indicates. That said, I do still prefer to drive there, because you don’t
get the speed demons. Driving is far more relaxed and I drive in such
a way that I don’t have to think about how I would drift the car in an
emergency, as we have just tried here.

Was that always the case? Yes. My first car was a Goggomobil that I bought in Bayreuth for 250 Deutschmarks. But
then I quickly moved onto the BMW path with a BMW 600.
It had bench seats; that was my first ‘smooching car’. Then,
in 1972, when my wife and I found ourselves in Munich, she
painted our BMW Isetta purple and decorated it with flowers.
When the Isetta gave up the ghost, we quite seriously wanted
to put it in our apartment to use as a sofa.
And now it’s a BMW M6 Gran Coupé in orange. 80
percent of all cars sold are black. That clearly means
nothing to you. No. I originally thought long and hard about
metallic gold. But then I was worried about making the right
impression. Here comes that old Gottschalk guy pretending
to be P. Diddy, and it doesn’t work. The type of person who, in
his more advanced years, walks around in red plaid trousers
like I do, can also quite happily drive about in an orange car.
Even with my pathological timekeeping, it is sometimes a race
against time and I have to step on it somewhat.
You were very interested in the electric BMW i3 at
BMW Welt, as well as in the BMW i8, which is coming
out in 2014. Why? Because I like to be on trend. To me, that
is bang on trend when I consider the ugly electric vehicles
from other manufacturers. Regarding the BMW i8, I shall say it
again: ‘It is erotic.’
War das schon immer so? Ja, mein erster Wagen war ein Goggomobil,
das ich für 250 Mark in Bayreuth gekauft habe. Aber ich war dann relativ
schnell auf der BMW Linie, mit einem BMW 600. Der hatte eine Sitzbank,
das war mein erstes Knutsch-Auto! Und meine Frau hat dann 1972, als
wir uns in München gefunden hatten, unsere BMW Isetta lila bemalt und
mit Blümchen dekoriert. Als die Isetta nicht mehr fuhr, wollten wir sie allen
Ernstes in die Wohnung stellen, als Sofa.
Nun ist es ein BMW M6 Gran Coupé in Orange. 80 Prozent aller
verkaufter Autos sind schwarz. Für Sie ist das offenbar nichts.
Nein, ich hatte ursprünglich sogar ein bisschen auf goldmetallic geschielt.
Aber dann war ich besorgt, ob ich dann den Eindruck erwecke: Da kommt
der alte Gottschalk jetzt wie P. Diddy daher, und das passt nicht. Jemand,
der im fortgeschrittenen Alter noch in solchen roten Karohosen daherkommt wie ich heute, der kann auch ein orangenes Auto gemütlich durch
die Gegend fahren. Bei meiner krankhaften Pünktlichkeit passiert es mir
allerdings noch immer manchmal, dass ich dann gegen die Uhr um die
Wette fahren und mich beeilen muss.
Sie haben sich in der BMW Welt sehr für das Elektroauto BMW i3
interessiert und für den Sportwagen der Zukunft, den BMW i8,
den es ab 2014 geben wird. Warum? Weil ich gerne im Trend bin. Und
das ist der Trend, wenn ich mir so die hässlichen E-Fahrzeuge anderer Marken anschaue. Bei dem BMW i8 sage ich auch wieder: ‚Der ist erotisch.‘
Wegen der Form? Auch. Und er ist einfach anders. Ich habe ja grundsätzlich eine große Angst vor Konformismus, in einem schwarzen Auto mit
einem schwarzen Anzug fahren zu müssen zum Beispiel. Und ich habe den

großen Vorteil, dass ich mich mein ganzes Leben lang nicht nach
den Regeln irgendeiner Corporate Identity richten musste. Das hat
kein Mensch von mir verlangt. Schon ganz am Anfang beim Bayerischen Rundfunk habe ich ein lila Sofa in mein Büro geschoben,
einen Sonnenschirm an meinen Schreibtisch gestellt und bin in
kurzen Hosen gekommen. Man kann das vielleicht sogar krampfhaft
nennen. Aber so lange es geht, bin ich anders als der Rest. Und deswegen stehe ich auf Fahrzeuge wie den BMW i8, die anders und
besonders sind.
Aber der BMW i3 und BMW i8 werden sich durchsetzen und
dann ein Standard im Bereich der E-Fahrzeuge sein ... Ja, und
dann war ich einer der Ersten, die solch ein Modell gefahren sind. Ich
habe auch schon früh die Apple-Entwicklung erkannt, und jetzt habe
ich das Gefühl, dass dieses BMW Projekt ähnlich sein wird. Da ist
etwas dabei, was beide Gegenstände über das reine Nutzteil erhebt.
Im Fall des Autos ist es das starke Design.
BMW M6 Gran Coupé oder BMW i8 – warum fahren Sie BMW?
Der Kreis schließt sich seit meinen fahrerischen Anfängen. Ich gebe zu,
dass ich eine Zeit lang mit deutschen Autos auch ein wenig gefremdelt
habe. Und über Rolls-Royce – so einen habe ich mir zum Sechzigsten
geleistet – bin ich zu BMW gekommen. Und dann habe ich gemerkt: Das
BMW M6 Gran Coupé erfüllt für mich auch meine englischen Anforderungen, diesen Stil, diese Eleganz. Der BMW X5, den ich in Amerika fahre, ist
das absolut perfekte Familienauto. Und auch hier in Deutschland eben das
BMW M6 Gran Coupé, auch wenn ich ihn nicht schnell fahre. Ich rede
lieber schnell.
Because of its shape? That too. And it’s just different. I am
fundamentally afraid of conformity. Like driving around in a
black car, in a black suit, for example. And I have the advantage
that, for my whole life, I have not had to conform to the rules
set by some kind of corporate identity. No one has asked that
of me. Even at the very beginning, on the Bavarian Broadcasting, I shoved a purple sofa in my office, stuck a sun umbrella
on my desk, and came in wearing shorts. You could even call
it spasmodic. But as long as it’s OK, I’ll always break from the
norm. And that’s why I like vehicles like the BMW i8, which are
different and special.
And yet the BMW i3 and the BMW i8 will assert themselves and then become the norm among e-vehicles...
Yes, and I will have been one of the first to have driven one.
I also recognised the development of Apple quite early on
and have the feeling that this BMW project will be very similar.
There is something about both of them that raise them above
simply being a useful tool. Where cars are concerned, it’s the
design.
BMW M6 Gran Coupé or BMW i8 – why do you drive a
BMW? It all began when I started driving. I must admit that,
for a long time, I was estranged from German cars. I went from
a Rolls-Royce (which I bought myself for my sixtieth) to BMW.
Then I realised that the BMW M6 Gran Coupé also fulfilled my
most English of needs; those being style and elegance. The
BMW X5 that I drive in the States is absolutely the perfect
family car. And just now in Germany, as is the BMW M6 Gran
Coupé; even if I don’t drive all that fast. I prefer to talk fast.

der Motorhaube haben. Nicht ohne Stolz blickt die
Chefinstruktorin zurück auf die einmalige Historie des BMW
M3 in der Flotte der BMW Driving Experience. Bereits seit der
Markteinführung 1986 sei die PS-starke Sport-Ikone nun im
Einsatz für mehr Fahrvergnügen, Sicherheit und Souveränität im
Cockpit, seit 1987 auf der Trainingsstrecke. 20.000 Kilometer
hat ein Fahrzeug in seinem Lebenszyklus auf dem Rundkurs in
Maisach oder auf einer der zahlreichen Rennstrecken zurückgelegt. Nun heißt es Adieu!
A white herd begins moving. These are Claudia Hürtgen’s
little sheep that pack a mean punch under their bonnet. The
chief instructor looks back with pride on the extraordinary
history of BMW M3 as part of the BMW Driving Experience
fleet. According to her, since it came on the market in 1986
this sports icon with a lot of horse power has been providing
more driving pleasure, safety and control in the cockpit. Since
1987 it has done the same on the training course. During their
service lives, each of these vehicles drove 20,000 kilometres
on the track in Maisach or one of the numerous race courses.

Mrs Hürtgen, you participated in some of the BMW M4 tests on
the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. Your first impressions?
Spontaneously: pure anticipation! From chassis, engine and transmission
through to the driving characteristics... it simply is a true M vehicle.

the BMW Driving Experience? The vehicle balance is unbelievably well
developed. The driver receives precise feedback. Steering movements turn
immediately into the sense of driving. As a result, there is also an additional

etwas an den Trainings ändern? Ja. Zum Beispiel wird es dann –
zunächst für das iPhone – auch eine BMW M Laptimer App geben!
Diese wird dem Fahrer gewisse Fahrdynamikdaten vom Fahrzeug direkt
aufs iPad oder iPhone liefern. Ein neuer Schritt in puncto Fahrfaszination –
und nicht nur für eingefleischte Technologiefans. Diese Performance
begeistert jeden!

A good feeling? Indeed. Here, that is a lot more than just a driving pleasure. On the Nordschleife, the Salzburgring or in Maisach – the outstanding
driving dynamics will excel on any course.
The M3 says good bye, the M4 is arriving. Is there anything that
will be different about the training sessions once it has been
introduced? Yes. At that time, for example, we will also have a BMW M
lap timer app, albeit initially for the iPhone only. It will deliver certain driving
dynamics data from the vehicle onto the driver’s iPad or iPhone. A new step
in terms of driving fascination – and not only for dyed-in-the-wool technology fans. This performance gets everybody excited!
Which additional features does the BMW M4 still need in the fleet
of BMW Driving Experience? We want to fully exploit the innovative
lightweight design concept and thereby convey lightness, dynamics and
agility to the driver. For this reason we took a pass on some furnishings that
serve only comfort and usually result in additional weight. Added to that is
our branding in the sports design and various additional recording systems.
Technology transfer from race track onto the road... does the BMW
M4 continue the M tradition? The intelligent lightweight construction
concept as well as chassis and transmission components were developed
with a clear focus on motor sports and driving fascination – with unlimited
capabilities for everyday driving. As a result, driving performance values
and the light, precise driving character turn the BMW M4 Coupé into an
excellent, fast street car that simply is a lot of fun on the race track as well as
the road.
Result – a “Power Coupé”? Definitely! A fantastic vehicle. With all
aspects a sports-oriented driver would want. The design alone oozes athleticism and therefore is more than a hint at the powerful driving experience.

der BMW Driving Experience umfassend betreut.
Mrs Baraka, the Driving Academy not only serves
BMW Group as a driver safety facility, but you also
open it to events. What sets the BMW and MINI Driving
Academy apart from other event locations? It is really the
incredible atmosphere and the myriad of possibilities that the
facility offers. The 130 hectares of this former airfield offer such
diversity in terms of the driver safety programme, that it leaves
nothing to be desired. The highly modern driver safety facility
offers sufficient space to simulate every kind of manoeuvre and
driving situation. It gives the customers and their guests the
chance to truly experience some unique moments. One of the
highlights in Maisach must be the old, over-grown aircraft shelters
that can be set up, at the clients request, for workshops, product
presentations, photo shoots, or even dinner events. At the facility,
guests are thoroughly looked after by the BMW Driving Experience
team.
Wie viele Anfragen gibt es denn für Maisach pro Monat?
Seit der Eröffnung der BMW und MINI Driving Academy erhalten
wir immer mehr Anfragen, sodass wir bereits 14.000 Teilnehmer
und Gäste im ersten Jahr betreuen durften. Derzeit haben wir
allein 80 Anfragen im Monat für individuelle Veranstaltungen, die
neben dem regulären Trainingsangebot durchgeführt werden.
How many requests do you receive for Maisach every
month? Since the launch of the BMW and MINI Driving Academy,
we received increasingly more requests to the point where we
looked after 14,000 participants and guests in the first year.
Currently, we receive about 80 requests per month for individual
events that will run alongside the regular training programme.
Eine sehr hohe Zahl, war das schon immer so? Nein, früher
war das anders. Diese hohe Akzeptanz der BMW und MINI Driving

That is a lot. Was that always the case? No, it was different
before. The draw of the BMW and MINI Driving Academy certainly
has to do with its proximity to the capital of the region, Munich, and
to BMW Welt, the BMW Museum, and the BMW factory. The proximity of the international airport also gives national and international clients the chance to combine their stay with a great driving
experience. In addition, the BMW and MINI Driving Academy is the
ideal gateway to visit the Alpine foot lands of Bavaria.
Welche Möglichkeiten bietet die BMW und MINI Driving
Academy? Zwei Eventhallen mit jeweils 800 Quadratmetern Fläche, eine Werkstatt für unsere Fahrzeuge sowie ein exklusiver,
lichtdurchfluteter Seminarraum mit angrenzender Sonnenterrasse
stehen zur Verfügung. Wir können dadurch Veranstaltungen sowohl für Einzelpersonen (Personal Coaching) als auch für Gruppen
mit mehr als 400 Personen realisieren.
What opportunities does the BMW and MINI Driving
Academy offer?There are two event halls, each with 800
square metres of floor space, a workshop for our vehicles, as well
as an exclusive, well-lit seminar room with adjoining sun terrace.
This allows us to cater for events with individual persons (personal
coaching), through to groups of over 400 people.
Gibt es auch außergewöhnliche Wünsche der Teilnehmer?
Ja, viele Kunden wünschen sich neben den emotionalen Fahraktivitäten auch einen tieferen Einblick, was hinter den Marken BMW
und MINI steht. So hatten wir kürzlich eine Veranstaltung mit hochrangigen Mitgliedern eines bekannten Finanzdienstleisters, die
sich neben dem Fahrspaß auch für die innovative Technik wie
ConnectedDrive und EfficientDynamics der aktuellen BMW und
MINI Modelle interessierten. Sie sehen, es gibt viele individuelle
Sonderwünsche. Bisher konnten wir fast alle erfüllen.
Are there many strange requests from participants? Yes.
Along with the rather emotive driving activities, they also want a
deeper look into what is behind the BMW and MINI brands. We
recently hosted an event for some senior associates of a wellknown financial services institution, who, along with the enjoyment
of driving, were interested in innovative technologies like the
ConnectedDrive and EfficientDynamics of the current BMW and
MINI models. So you see, there are many unique requests. Until
now, we have been able to fulfil almost all of them.
Was wird bei Ihnen am häufigsten gebucht?

What is the most commonly booked experience? In recent
years, the focus of the requests has been on events with driver
safety-related content. Since the launch of the BMW and MINI
Driving Academy, it has been gratifying that increasingly more
emotional experiences are being booked with workshops and
supporting programmes that relate to driver safety, which we then
tailor to the individual needs of the client.

The first „Wow!“ comes from Fernando, a man with short brown
hair and a smiling face. Fernando comes from Miami. Now, on this
sunny June morning, he is standing on the BMW grounds in
Maisach and he looks enthusiastically over the courses that were
set up there. A fleet of 42 vehicles is lined up in front of the new
reception building of the BMW Driving Experience, behind it
seemingly randomly distributed white-red and white-blue pylons
on the grey asphalt of the former airport. This morning shortly before
ten o’clock, the only audible sound comes from chirping birds, no
humming of any engine yet.

as erste „Wow!“ stammt von Fernando, einem Mann mit
kurzen dunklen Haaren und einem lächelnden Gesicht.
Fernando kommt aus Miami. Nun steht er an einem
sonnigen Junivormittag auf dem BMW Gelände in Maisach und betrachtet begeistert den dort aufgebauten Parcours. Eine Flotte von
42 Fahrzeugen steht aufgereiht vor dem neuen Empfangsgebäude
der BMW Driving Experience, dahinter sind scheinbar willkürlich
aufgestellte weiß-rote und weiß-blaue Pylonen auf dem grauen
Asphalt des ehemaligen Flughafens verteilt. Noch brummt kein
Motor, nur Vogelgezwitscher ist zu hören an diesem Vormittag um
kurz vor zehn Uhr.
Sein Arbeitgeber hat sich für die Mitarbeiter an diesem Tag etwas
ganz Besonderes ausgedacht, eine einzigartige Veranstaltung
auf einem einzigartigen Gelände, konzipiert und organisiert vom
Incentive-Team der BMW Driving Experience.
Die Incentive-Teamleiterin der BMW Driving Experience steht auf
der Treppe des Empfangsgebäudes und blickt über das Gelände.
„Hier ist einfach alles möglich“, sagt sie, „wo gibt es sonst derart
viele verschiedene Räumlichkeiten?“ Die ehemaligen Shelter auf
dem Gelände, das neue Empfangsgebäude mit seinem CateringService und der großen Terrasse, die BMW Halle mit den angrenzenden Seminar- und Theorieräumen sowie die riesige Freifläche
für die fahraktiven Übungen. „Mit dieser Kombination können wir
unseren Kunden einmalige und auf sie zugeschnittene Veranstaltungen anbieten. Ob Einzeltraining oder Großveranstaltungen mit
mehr als 400 Personen, vom Catering über ein exklusives Rahmenprogramm bis hin zur Unterbringung – unser Kreativteam kümmert
sich um jede Feinheit, die dem Kunden am Herzen liegt.“
Fernando reibt sich die Hände, sieht auf die Uhr und betritt das
Gebäude. Er ist einer von 70 Teilnehmern der heutigen BMW
Customized Experience, die das internationale Unternehmen
Caterpillar als exklusives Incentive für sein Personal gebucht hat.

The Incentive Team Leader of the BMW Driving Experience stands
at the top of the reception building’s stairs and surveys the grounds.
“Simply anything is possible here,” she says, “where else can you
get such an array of different facilities?” The former shelters on the
premises, the new reception building with its catering service and
the large terrace, the BMW Hall with adjacent seminar and theory
rooms as well as the enormous open space for active driving exercises. “With this combination, we are able to offer unique and customized events for our customers. Whether individual training or
large-scale events with more than 400 participants, from catering to
exclusive framework programmes all the way to accommodations –
our creative team takes care of every detail important to customers.”
Fernando rubs his hands, looks at the clock and enters the building.
He is one of 70 participants of today’s BMW Customized Experience booked by the international Caterpillar Corporation as an
exclusive incentive for its staff. A team-building measure of a special
kind for employees from all over the world.

incentive events normally start out with seminars and presentations
about company-specific matters or subjects all about BMW, on
this morning, after a short introduction presented by instructors
participants are on their way to their cars.

Adam aus Nigeria erklärt, dass er sich auf diesen Tag vorbereitet hat, indem
er die verschiedenen Übungen im Geiste durchgegangen ist. Die kleine
Rennrunde, die Bremsübung am Anfang, das Steuern auf nassem Belag.
Er blickt durch die Panoramascheiben des Empfangsgebäudes hinaus auf
die Pylonen und lächelt. Während normalerweise zu Beginn der IncentiveVeranstaltungen zunächst auf Wunsch Seminare oder Präsentationen zu
firmenspezifischen Anliegen oder Themen rund um BMW angeboten
werden, sind die Teilnehmer an diesem Vormittag schon nach einer kurzen
Einführung durch die Instruktoren auf dem Weg zu den Autos.
Zehn Teilnehmer bekommen je einen Instruktor zugewiesen, der zunächst
draußen an den aufgereihten Fahrzeugen die richtige Sitzeinstellung im
MINI, BMW X5 oder BMW M3 erklärt. Dann werden 42 Autos angelassen
und ein tiefes Summen erfüllt den riesigen Platz, auf dem verschiedene
Parcours aufgebaut sind, sodass mehrere Gruppen gleichzeitig trainieren
können. Fernando startet in seiner Gruppe mit der Bremsübung: hundert
Meter in leichtem Slalom um die Hütchen, eine halbe Drehung, Vollgas
geben und dann voll bremsen. Der erste der erfahrenen BMW Instruktoren
gibt über Funk das Zeichen zum Start: „Ladies and Gentlemen, ready to
go!“ Die BMW M3 Karawane sucht sich einen Weg zwischen den bunten
Hütchen, aber keiner der Fahrer gibt beim ersten Mal richtig Gas. „Die
trauen sich am Anfang nie“, sagt der Instruktor, der ausgestiegen ist und
seine Crew per Funk anfeuert.
Beim dritten Versuch steigt Fernando erstmals energisch aufs Gaspedal,
beschleunigt bis auf 70 Stundenkilometer, rast 50 Meter, dann volle Kraft
auf den rechten Fuß, die Reifen quietschen, die Schnauze des Fahrzeugs
setzt beinahe auf der Fahrbahn auf. Fernando hängt im Gurt und schaut

ein wenig überrascht. Aus den Lautsprecherboxen klingt der Instruktor:
„Hey, man from Miami! Well done!“ Fernando sagt: „Du fühlst dabei so
viel Kontrolle über das Fahrzeug, was für ein wunderbares Gefühl.“ Und
dann spricht er das zweite „Wow!“, langsam und breit.
Es dröhnt von der langen Geraden, gleich danach quietscht ein MINI, der
zunächst mit Vollgas rückwärts losgefahren ist, um dann mit der Agentenwende um 180 Grad zu drehen und geradeaus weiterzurollen. Das gibt
noch ein „Wow!“ von Fernando. Er unterhält sich mit zwei Kollegen aus
Russland über die Wende und sagt anschließend: „So wie hier lernt man
Leute doch nie in so kurzer Zeit kennen. Zusammen erleben wir ein kleines
Abenteuer, das schweißt jede Gruppe zusammen.“
50 Meter weiter kreiselt Piotr aus Polen über die nasse Fahrbahn. Direkt
vor einem der Shelter, die das ideale Setting für Business Events, Produktoder Fahrzeugpräsentationen bieten. Im Mix mit modernem Equipment
und hochqualifiziertem Personal ergibt sich auf diesem Gelände die wohl
aufregendste On-Off-Location für Business Events und fahraktive Veranstaltungen in München und Umgebung.
Aus kleinen Düsen dicht über dem Boden schießt Wasser auf den Asphalt.
„Wenn das Fahrzeug nach außen ausbricht, dann musst du auch nach
außen lenken“, ist die Anweisung über den Bordfunk. Am Rande der
nassen Piste stehen zwei Instruktoren und sind guter Dinge, der Zeitplan
ist eingehalten. Alle wirken sehr zufrieden. Kein Wunder, werden sie doch
an diesem Tag permanent von mehr als zehn Mitarbeitern der BMW und
MINI Driving Academy betreut.
Ten participants each are assigned an instructor who first explains correct
seat settings in the MINI, BMW X5 or BMW M3 models lined up outside.
Then the 42 cars are started, a deep humming fills the giant area where the
different courses are set up for several groups to practise at the same time.
In his group, Fernando starts with the braking exercise: one hundred metres
in an easy slalom around the cones, a half turn, open the throttle all the way
and then coming to an emergency stop. The first of the experienced
instructors gives the starting signal on his radio: “Ladies and Gentlemen,
ready to go!” The BMW M3 caravan finds its way between the coloured
cones but none of the drivers really step on the accelerator on the first
attempt. “The never have enough courage at the beginning,” says the
instructor who got out of the vehicle and encourages his crew on his radio.
Fernando puts the pedal to the metal for the first time on his third attempt.
He accelerates to 70 kilometres per hour, races for 50 metres before
pushing with his right foot with all his might. Tyres screeching, the vehicle’s
hood nearly hits the tarmac. Fernando hangs in his seat belt and looks
around. Over the loudspeakers sounds the instructor’s voice, “Hey, man
from Miami! Well done!” Fernando says: “All the while you feel like you have
so much control over the vehicle, what a wonderful feeling.” Then slowly
and widely he utters the second “Wow!”.
A roaring sound from the long straight, immediately
afterwards a MINI is screeching. It had started out
by going full power in reverse to perform an agent
turn, a 180 degree turn while going in reverse.
Then it continues rolling straight ahead again.
This prompts another “Wow!” from Fernando. He
discusses the turn with two colleagues from Russia
and goes on to say: “You certainly never get to
know people in such a short period of time the way
you do here. Together we are experiencing a little
adventure that will make any group form a bond.”
50 metres down the track, Piotr from Poland spins
across the wet carriageway. Exactly in front of one
of the shelters offering the ideal setting for business
events and product or vehicle presentations. This
mix of modern equipment and highly qualified staff
on these grounds most likely results in the most
exciting on-off location for business events and events including driving
activities in and around Munich.
Water comes shooting onto the asphalt from small nozzles just above the
ground. “If the car breaks away to the outside you have to steer toward the
outside as well,” comes the instruction via the car’s radio equipment.
Two instructors are standing beside the wet track, happy because they are
on schedule. Everyone seems completely satisfied. No wonder. After all,
throughout this entire day they are cared for by more than ten employees of
the BMW and MINI Driving Academy.

reicht’s ihm langsam, könnte man meinen. Von wegen, das Gegenteil ist der Fall. Kaufmann will noch mehr, hat sein nächstes Training
schon gebucht, und das aus gutem Grund. Seine Begeisterung
für Fahrertrainings können die Teilnehmerinnen des ersten FrauenTrainings auf dem Gelände in Maisach garantiert nachempfinden.

Driver training sessions are fun. Without a doubt. Is it the same once
you’ve had 40 though? Obviously. After all, Peter Kaufmann participated in 40 training sessions already. There is hardly anything the BMW
Driving Experience has to offer that is new to this 63-year old from
Vienna. You would think that he’s had enough by now. Far from it, it’s
just the opposite. Kaufmann wants even more; he already booked
his next training and there is a good reason. Participants of the first
training for women on the premises in Maisach will most certainly be
able to relate to his enthusiasm for driver training. Exciting experiences

ls er die Kurve sieht, weiß er: Ich bin zu schnell. Peter Kaufmann
fährt von seinem Landhaus zurück nach Wien, als vor ihm die
Rechtskurve auftaucht. Er ist den Weg schon Hunderte Male
gefahren, doch dieses Mal ist er zu schnell, „viel zu schnell“, sagt der
63-Jährige. „Ich habe mich schon in der Böschung gesehen.“
Was macht ein Anfänger in so einer Situation? Er versucht, die Kurve zu
fahren, lenkt stärker ein als sonst, überfordert die Vorderräder, bis das Heck
ausbricht, und landet in der Böschung. „Ich habe instinktiv richtig gehandelt, entgegen jeder spontanen Logik“, sagt Kaufmann mit seinem weichen
Wiener Dialekt. Im Unterbewusstsein hat er den Ablauf abgerufen, den er
von seinen nunmehr 40 Fahrertrainings kennt. Er stellt das Auto gerade,
steigt voll in die Bremsen und fährt geradeaus. So erreicht er die maximale
Bremswirkung und kommt gerade so in die Kurve, langsam genug. „Ich
habe es geschafft, automatisch. Hätte ich nachgedacht, hätte ich das in der
Böschung ausgiebig weitermachen können.“
Der Anfänger und der Profi. Kaufmann ist Fahrprofi, als solchen kann man
den ehemaligen Bauunternehmer aus Wien ohne Frage bezeichnen. 40
Fahrertrainings hat er innerhalb der letzten 13 Jahre bereits absolviert, die
nächsten stehen an. „Ich dachte erst, das brauche ich nicht, ich bin doch
immer Motorrad gefahren.“ Doch seine Frau überzeugte ihn und beim
ersten Training schon war er fasziniert. „Ich habe gemerkt: Ich mache so viel
falsch!“ Er lernte auf dem Salzburgring auf beregneter Fahrbahn, „was mit
einem Auto bei Nässe alles möglich ist“.
Kaufmann nutzte fast alle Angebote der BMW Driving Experience. Er
spürte mit dem BMW Z3 in Tschechien bei „Perfektion 1“ in den Kurven

mit 160 Stundenkilometern, „wie man da in den Sitz gepresst wird, das ist
ein unglaubliches Gefühl“. Oder die Fliehkräfte auf der Nordschleife des
Nürburgrings, „so eng wie eine Landstraße“, im Vergleich zu Spa „noch
etwas gefährlicher“. Und in den Wintertrainings „habe ich das Gefühl für das
Handling bekommen“. Auf Schnee und Eis lerne man vor allem Dinge, die
man beim Fahren erspüren muss. „Man merkt mit dem Hintern, was das
Auto tut, sagt man.“ In Wahrheit müsse man aber vorher schon wissen, was
das Fahrzeug gleich tun werde, in der nächsten halben Sekunde, nur dann
reagiere man richtig.
Der Mann ist ein BMW Fan, wie ihn sich kein Werbekreativer besser ausdenken könnte. Er hat fünf Fahrzeuge der Marke zu Hause, „einen BMW
M3 CSL, einen BMW X3, einen BMW M3 GTS, ein BMW 1er Cabrio 135i
und einen neuen BMW X3 35d“. Es sind „jeweils die stärksten Modelle der
Klasse“. Man könnte meinen, in einem BMW kann man dem Mann nichts
mehr vormachen, doch das täuscht. „Auch beim letzten Training habe ich
wieder viel gelernt.“ Am Anfang ist es meistens so, dass das Fahrverhalten
grundsätzlich optimiert wird, mittlerweile geht es um Details.
Im Oktober ist Kaufmann in Mugello. Training 41. Warum? „Ich werde das
Auto ausreizen, um meine Sinne noch mehr zu schärfen.“ Er klingt ruhig
und bestimmt bei diesem Satz, leichte Wiener Melodie in der Stimme. Als
sei ein Fahrertraining wie regelmäßiges Einparken oder ein Erste-Hilfe-Kurs.
„Das muss man einfach immer wieder machen.“ Immer wieder gerne, die
BMW Driving Experience hat Herrn Kaufmann noch einiges zu bieten, zum
Beispiel die neuen Tour-Trainings in Botswana und Südafrika. Sicher auch
zwei lohnende Reiseziele für Peter Kaufmann.

s soon as he sees the curve he knows: “I am too fast.”
Peter Kaufmann is on his way from his country house back
to Vienna when the right-hand curve appears in front of him.
He has driven this road hundreds of times before. Still, this time he is
too fast, “way too fast,” the 63-year old says. “I already saw myself on
the embankment.”
What does a beginner do in this type of situation? He tries to drive
the curve, steers more forcefully than he would otherwise, he puts too
much stress on the front wheels until the rear breaks out and he lands
on the embankment. “Instinctively I responded correctly and contrary
to any spontaneous logic,” says Kaufmann in his soft Viennese
dialect. His unconscious recalled the process familiar to him from the
40 driver training sessions he completed thus far. He straightens his
car, using full force he puts his foot on the brakes and drives straight
ahead. This way he generates maximum braking action and arrives
at the curve in just this way, at sufficiently slow speed. “I managed,
automatically. Had I thought about it, I could have continued to do so
on the embankment and for quite a while.”
Beginner and pro. Kaufmann is a pro at driving; there is no doubt that
the former building contractor from Vienna deserves this designation.
Within the past 13 years he completed 40 driver training sessions
with more to follow. “At first I thought I did not need it; after all, I always
rode a motorcycle.” However, his wife convinced him and he got hooked during his first training session. “I realised: there are so many things
I am doing wrong!” On the Salzburgring course wet from rain he learned “all the things that are possible with a car when it’s wet outside”.
Kaufmann took advantage of nearly every course offered by the BMW
Driving Experience. Driving the BMW Z3 in Czechia during “Perfection 1”, going through curves at 160 kilometres per hour he felt “how
in this moment you get pressed into your seat, it’s an unbelievable
feeling”. Or the centrifugal forces on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, “as narrow as a county lane”, compared to Spa it is “even a bit
more dangerous”. And during those winter training sessions “I got a
feel for handling”. On snow and ice, above all you will learn things that
you have to feel for while driving. “They say that your bottom will tell
you what the car is doing.” Truthfully, however, you will have to know in
advance what the car is about to do during the next split second. Only
then you will respond correctly.
The man is a BMW fan that could not be imagined any better by a
creator of advertisement. There are five cars of the brand at his house,
“a BMW M3 CSL, a BMW X3, a BMW M3 GTS, a BMW 1 Series
Convertible 135i and a new BMW X3 35d. Each one of them is most
powerful model in its class.” You would think that there is nothing left
to teach this man in a BMW, but you would be mistaken. “During my
last training I once again learned a lot.” At the beginning, it is mostly
about basic optimisation of driving behaviour; in the meantime it is
about details.
In October, Kaufmann will be in Mugello. Training No. 41. Why? “I will
tease every last bit out of the car in order to sharpen my senses even
more.” He sounds calm and certain, speaking with a slight Viennese
melody in his voice. As if driver training were the same as routinely
parking your car or a course in first-aid. “You simply have to do this
every so often.” He enjoys it again and again. After all, the BMW
Driving Experience still has quite a lot to offer to Mr Kaufmann, such
as the new training session on tours in Botswana and South Africa.
Surely both of these are rewarding destinations for Peter Kaufmann.

ntje ist aufgeregt. In wenigen Tagen wird ihr neuer BMW
Z4 geliefert. „Mit Heckantrieb und ganz schön viel Power
dahinter“, so die sportliche junge Frau, die an diesem Tag in
Maisach an ihrem ersten Fahrertraining teilnimmt.
Am ersten reinen Frauen-Training, um genau zu sein. Mit dieser Trainingsform erfüllt die BMW Driving Experience einen Wunsch, der immer
häufiger geäußert wurde. Von Frauen für Frauen, weil die weiblichen
Bedürfnisse in Sachen Auto und Fahrsicherheit eben doch andere sind.
Das weiß auch Cornelia Abel, die Instruktorin an diesem Tag. „Man
kann nicht pauschal sagen, dass Frauen anders oder schlechter fahren
als Männer. Aber erfahrungsgemäß fühlen sie sich in einem Rahmen,
in dem sie sich nicht profilieren müssen, sicherer und mutiger, um auch
neue Dinge auszuprobieren.“ Und Neues möchte die unerschütterliche
Instruktorin mit ihren Teilnehmerinnen auf jeden Fall erleben.
Nach einem gemeinsamen Frühstück geht es zunächst an die altbekannten Basics: Dem gut aufgebauten und verständlichen Theorieteil
folgt die praktische Einführung zum Thema optimale Sitz- und Lenkradposition, bevor die sieben Teilnehmerinnen selbst aufs Gaspedal treten
dürfen. „Es ist wichtig, dass die Basics beherrscht werden“, so Abel.
Denn mit der richtigen Haltung komme auch das sichere Fahrgefühl in
schwierigen Situationen. Jegliche möglichen Gefahren lassen aber erst
einmal auf sich warten – zunächst dürfen sich die Teilnehmerinnen bei

der Fahrt um die aufgestellten Pylonen warmfahren. „Ich habe mich so
auf dieses Training gefreut“, verrät Kathrin, Mutter von zwei Kindern, die
sich dieses Fahrertraining zum Geburtstag gewünscht hat. Und auch die
anderen Teilnehmerinnen sind mit Spaß und großem Interesse bei der
Sache. Einige zu Beginn noch zaghaft und vorsichtig, aber zunehmend
risikobereiter. Die aufmunternden und launigen Sprüche der Instruktorin
tragen ihr Übriges dazu bei: „Petra, nicht vorm Eiscafé bremsen, gib
mal ein bisschen Gas“, ermuntert sie die Teilnehmerin, die sich bei der
anschließenden Übung, der Notbremsung, dem Hindernis zu langsam
nähert und wie in Zeitlupe zum Stehen kommt.
Überhaupt sorgt das Thema Bremsweg für Erstaunen: Laut Cornelia
Abel wird die Länge des Bremsweges häufig unterschätzt. Als Orientierung nennt sie 13 Meter bis zum Stand bei Tempo 30 – und den
Teilnehmerinnen wird noch einmal richtig bewusst, wie lang diese Strecke eigentlich ist. Jetzt ist die Neugier geweckt, die Gruppe fordert eine
Notbremsung bei Tempo 100. Aus Sicherheitsgründen überlassen sie
diese Herausforderung doch lieber der erfahrenen Instruktorin, die dann
auch gekonnt in die Eisen steigt und den kürzestmöglichen Bremsweg
vorführt. Zur Freude der Teilnehmerinnen legt sie anschließend noch
einen beeindruckenden Drift bei voller Beschleunigung auf den Asphalt.
Nicht ganz das, was Antje mit ihrem neuen BMW Z4 machen wird.
Aber nach diesem Training kann sie die Kraft ihres neuen Autos ganz
entspannt genießen.
WOMEN’S BUSINESS
A
ntje is excited. Her new BMW Z4 will be delivered in a few
days. “With rear wheel drive and quite a lot of power behind
it,” says the athletic young woman participating in her first
driver’s training in Maisach on this day.
On the first all-women training to be precise. This form of training is the
response of the BMW Driving Experience to more and more frequently
voiced requests. From women for women because the needs of women
are indeed different when it comes to cars and driving safety. Cornelia
Abel who is the instructor on this day is well aware. “You cannot make
a general statement that female drivers are different or worse than their
male counterparts. However, it is our experience that they feel more secure and courageous about trying new things in an environment where
they do not have to prove themselves.” And this unflappable instructor
definitely wants to experience something new with her female participants.
After having breakfast together, they first tackle the well-known basics:
The well-structured and easy-to-understand theoretical part is followed
by a practice-oriented introduction on the topic of seat and steering
wheel position before the seven participants are allowed to push the
accelerator. “Mastery of the basics is important,” says Abel. After all,
correct posture is said to foster the feeling of safety while driving even in
difficult situations. However, for the time being any potential hazards will
have to wait. First the participants are given a chance to warm up during
a drive around the pylons that were set up. “I was so looking forward to
this training,” reveals Kathrin, a mother of two children who requested
this driver training for her birthday. The other participants also engage
in the activities with great interest and pleasure. At first, some are a
little timid and cautious but step-by-step they are willing to take more
risks. Encouraging and witty phrases from the instruction take care of
the rest: “Petra no braking in front of the ice cream parlour, step on the
gas a little,” she cheers the participant on. During the next exercise, an
emergency stop, she approaches the obstacle too slowly and comes to
a standstill as though in slow motion.
The topic of braking distance elicits amazement altogether: According to
Cornelia Abel, the brake path length is frequently underestimated. The
general guideline she provides is 13 metres to standstill at 30 kilometres
per hour – and the participants still do not realise the actual length of this
path. Now that they are curious the group wants to execute an emergency stop at 100 kilometres per hour. Nevertheless, for safety reasons
they prefer turning this challenge over to the experienced instructor who
is happy to oblige and demonstrate her skill by expertly applying the
brakes. To the delight of the women participating in this training, she
finishes with an impressive drift on the asphalt at full acceleration. Not
exactly what Antje will do in her new BMW Z4. Still, she will be able to
enjoy the power of her new car while being completely relaxed.

want peace of mind in poor road conditions, this training is the right
choice. Thanks to the expert support of our BMW instructors you’ll gain

understeering of a BMW M3 and take driving physics to the limit with
controlled drifting on ice and snow. In addition to receiving a certificate

kommen die Schneeketten bei Brems- und Ausweichmanövern am
Berg zum Einsatz. Zudem meistern Sie das Anfahren von Kurven
bergauf und bergab sowie das Bremsen und Ausweichen vor Hindernissen bei der Talfahrt. Ob bei der Pistenraupenfahrt oder im aufregenden
Offroad-Parcours: Sie erleben Winter-Action pur.
The adversity of winter will leave you cold after our BMW Snow Basic
Training. Because on our highest winter training grounds you will gain
just the confidence behind the wheel to let you always act with perfect
sang-froid. On the night before the training, our BMW instructors
introduce you to the theory of driving dynamics as well as in putting
on snow chains before everyone heads off to a Tyrolean evening at the
lodge. After warming up the next morning, the snow chains are used
in braking and evasive manoeuvres on the mountain. You’ll also master
approaching uphill and downhill bends as well as braking and avoiding
obstacles on the way down. Whether on the snow-groomers ride or in
the exciting off-road course: You’ll experience pure winter action.
