Bericht des Präsidenten
Der diesjährige Präsidentenball war wieder
ein grosser Erfolg und
unsere Halle war beinahe ausverkauft. Ein
Dank an Rita Allmendinger und Sarah Fretz
mit ihrem Vergnügungskomitee für die schöne
Dekoration der Halle und überhaupt für die
Organisierung des Präsidentenballs. An

President’s Report
Our Presidents Ball was again a big success
this year with a nearly sold out Hall. Please
forgive me if I did not get a chance to greet
everybody. I would like to extend my thanks
to Rita Allmendinger, Sarah Fretz and the
Entertaining Committee for the nice decorations in the Hall and the organizing of this
special evening. One more thanks to Robert
Nowak, Heidi Nowak and Rita Allmendinger for their loyalty to our Club during
their time as Board members. Bob Nowak
could not be with us at the Presidents Ball,
but we will present him with a small gift of
appreciation at a later date. Thanks to our
Chef Andreas and his kitchen helpers for a
wonderful dinner and service.
My Wife Kathi and I would like to thank the
Ladies Group for inviting us to their
Bockbierfest. On this evening we are also

From the Manager’s Desk
Mothers Day
On May 12th, 2013 we
celebrate Mothers Day in
our hall by offering a
brunch buffet at noon as
well as an equally beautiful evening buffet starting
at 5pm. This event, in honour of all mothers, represents one of the more
important occasions in the annual line up of
club activities! It is always a pleasure to see
families as well as extended families come
out to not only cherish their mothers but
also their grandmothers and in some cases
grand grandmothers! Which mother would
not feel “loved” when she can come together with all her favourite and closest people
to celebrate with food! Because it is for her
it is particularly sweet and of course shows
more than just appreciation! Over the last
few years we have seen many proud and
gleaming grandmothers at these events!
Concordia hospitality tradition dictates that
our Chef Andreas and all his staff in the
kitchen will make sure everyone will have a
culinary feast.
Of course, as we have done in the past:
every mother regardless of age will be presented with a flower at the door by our new
Miss Concordia 2013. All of our staff will
ensure that everything on that day will be
particularly perfect. Price per person will be
$ 22.50, children 4-12 pay $ 11.25 and children under 4 are free! My advise is to book
early- especially since we accept on line
reservations as well. Last year even the dinner seating sold out very quickly! Our on
line reservation system only allows a certain
percentage of seats to be booked on line,
5
therefore if you have a larger group of people or cannot book your site online, then
please call the club office as we can probably still book you in.
Patio Opening
This year's “Annual Patio Party” and has
been scheduled for Tuesday, May 28th
starting at 5pm. Our Kitchen will grill
sausages on a bun, fine meatloaf on a bun as
well as Hamburgers for only $ 5 inclusive
taxes!! And..... of course we'll have a draft
beer station set up where we'll sample beer
directly from Bavaria. For your musical
entertainment we've been able to book the
Transylvania Hofbrau Band!
All we need to do now is to hope for two
things: That the weather will co-operate and
that many of you will come out to enjoy our
patio opening!! Then we have a real beer
garden party 100% authentic!
We'll certainly be ready. Please watch our
website or call the (weather) office once we
are closer to the date to determine if there
are inclement weather conditions in the
forecast!
Oktoberfest Admission Tickets
We published long article in last month's
Nachrichten with all the relevant details as
to how and when our Oktoberfest tickets go
on sale. Other than pricing there are no
changes over last year's tickets. You can find
out more by looking it up in last month's
Nachrichten or by visiting our website: simply go to www.concordiaclub.ca and click
on “about the club” and pick the “newsletter” link there you'll see the April 2013
issue as a pdf file – which your computer
should be able to open.
We look forward to meeting many of you,
over the next few months, either in our
Schenke, Halle or when our patio opens!!
White Asparagus Promotional Special Menu
As we have done in past years we will feature a special white Asparagus Menu in the
Schenke from May 22nd until June 1st! We
will get you the absolute freshest and best
white asparagus from our farmer in Simcoe,
Ontario! We'll make the trip ourselves to get
you this delicacy and our competent
kitchen staff will prepare it so you can truly
enjoy it. Please book and reserve ahead as
Chef Andreas likes to plan properly and
have sufficient quantities on hand. Due to
the many specials and Buffet offerings we
have the white asparagus menu available on
the following days as outlined here:
Wednesday, May 22nd (lunch & supper)
Thursday, May 23rd (lunch only)
Saturday, May 25th (evening only)
Tuesday, May 28th (lunch only)
Wednesday, May 29th (lunch only)
Friday, May 31st (lunch and supper)
Saturday, June 1st (evening only
because she has her heart in the right place
and has shown over the years that her level
of care for the organization is unmatched.
For me of course a large part of my life is
coming up to a huge change and it will take
time for me to probably adjust to my new
reality. Concordia has played a big role in
my life for 32 years and Concordia has
always been very good to me. I feel thankful,
grateful and blessed having been able to
serve as the General Manager during these
years and most of all I have enjoyed meeting
all our members on many occasions as well
as working with so many of you! People
matter most - and this is what Concordia has
shown to me! Thank you all for that long
lasting opportunity!

Treffpunkt
Welcome to our newest member, Andrea
Gschoesser. We look forward to getting to
know you better.
The Treffpunkt enjoyed an evening out at
our Club’s Praesidenten Ball, and had a
great time. Thanks to the Club for putting on
such a lovely event year after year.
Our Fruehlingsfest was on Saturday, April 6
– and what a FANTASTIC evening it was!
Thank you to everyone who came out to
support us. We hope everyone enjoyed
themselves as much as we did. The Golden
Keys rocked the house and got everyone up
and dancing.
I would like to Thank the planning committee for their hard, tireless work getting this
dance together. I would also like to thank
the entire Treffpunkt group for helping to
make this event turn out so great. Obviously
7
everyone did their part in getting the word
out. The final numbers are not in yet, but we
definitely had the biggest turnout for this
event to date. Every little bit done by committee members was appreciated. Without
everyone’s input this event would not be
possible.

Hallo Freunde,
wie ich schon im letzten Bericht vermutet
hatte, wird unsere diesjaehrige Klubmeisterschaft dank unserer beiden Turnierleiter,
John und Scott, im angedachten Zeitrahmen
durchgefuehrt. Als Pokalgewinner steht
Stefan Babic ohne Spielverlust bereits fest.
05. Mai statt. Sicher habt ihr meinen Fehler
bereits bemerkt und euch das richtige
Datum vorgemerkt.
Guenther Gawantka
Zum Schluss geht unser tief empfundenes Beileid an Danuta Gawantka.
Wie wir so eben erfahren haben, wurde
unser langjaehriger Tischtennisfreund,
Guenther Gawantka, am Donnerstag,
04.04. 2013, nach schwerer Krankheit
von seinem Leiden erloest.
Wir wuenschen dir, Danuta, die
noetige Kraft und Zuversicht in dieser
so schweren Lebensphase.

TABLE TENNIS GROUP
Hello Friends,
Our Table Tennis Group Tournament, under
the direction of Scott and John, is on schedule to conclude within the anticipated time
frame. This years winner has already been
decided. Congratulations go to Stefan Babic
who claims the title having won every one
of his matches. However, at the time of writing, the second and third places are still
hotly contested. I will announce the official
results in the following Bulletin. A big
thank you to all who participated and
helped make it a fun and exciting tournament.
A correction:
The general cleanup of the Club grounds
takes place on May 4, not on May 5! Please
mark the date in your calendars.
Guenther Gawantka
Finally, we at the Table Tennis Group
would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Danuta Gawantka on the
passing of her husband and our friend,
Guenther. Guenther passed away on
April 4, 2013 after a severe illness.
Danuta, our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
Until next time,
Eckhard Michalski

THE HEALTHY NICHE
(GESUNDHEITS ECKE)
PROCESSED MEATS-ARE
THEY HEALTHY?
written by: Natascha Steckel ROHP/RNCP
(C: 226-789-5989) at [email protected]
Last month’s I pointed to common food additives, and
this month we’ll look at some popular foods loaded
with additives. Processed meats, like hot dogs, bacon,
pepperoni and deli meats often contain dangerous
ingredients that increase your risk of inflammation as
well as, Colon, Bladder, Stomach and Pancreatic
cancers. Some ingredients are:
• HCAs (Heterocyclic amines) - a carcinogen created
when cooking at high temperatures
• Sodium nitrite - preservative and antimicrobial
agent, it adds color and flavor
• PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) - formed
when smoking meats during the curing process
• AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products) - created
when pasteurizing/sterilizing foods at high temperatures - build up over time, and lead to free radicals
and inflammation in the body which lead to disease.
A report funded in 2005, by the general public, and
commissioned by the World Cancer Research Fund
(WCRF), evaluated more than 7000 clinical studies,
and found that processed meats increase your risk of
cancer.
When a craving strikes, you can reduce your risk by:
• purchasing “uncured” products without nitrates
• purchase 100% beef, 100% chicken without by
products like skin, fat or other parts.
• Avoiding anything with MSG, high-fructose corn
syrup, preservatives, artificial flavor or artificial
color
Ideally, purchase meats from a small, local farmer who
can tell you exactly what's in their products.
Note: As always, please chat with a Dr. before making lifestyle
changes, especially if you are taking medications.

Ladies Group
At our April meeting our tables were
adorned with Easter Cup Cakes, coloured
eggs and chocolate. Thank you Karin & Lilli
Wesel for all the work. It was very much
appreciated and festive.
On Sunday, April 21. the Ladies Group had
brunch at the Concordia Club and invited
their husbands, partners and boyfriends.
This took place instead of a picnic in the
summer at the farm. Many of the ladies
don’t like to drive that far.
Bockbierfest has taken place by now and I
hope that it was very successful.
On Wednesday, July. 17. the ladies will be
going to Stag West to see the show “Shout”.

DOWN SOUTH GROUP
I am still investigating where our next
trip will go. It should be in the club
show case by the Schenke by the time
this bulletin comes out.
The date for the trip orientation will be
on Friday. 31. May 2013 in the
Weinstube at 7 pm. You can also call
Mike Doersam at 519-622-7777.
Hope to see you all there.

Concordia Chess Group
Happy Spring everyone! The annual meeting of the Chess Group took place on January 18th. Our new executive committee is:
President - Andrew Lehmann
Vice-president - Dan Wagner
Treasurer - Stephen Humphreys
Secretary - Dan Wagner
Director at Large - Kathie Dowswell
Tournament Director - Andrew Lehmann
The club championship took place during
January, February and March. Stephen
Humphreys won the tournament by narrowly edging out Gord Olheiser who finished in
second place. Andrew Lehmann took third
place. Our thanks to Andrew for organizing
the tournament!
The group meets every Thursday evening at
7:30 pm in the Jägerstube if it is available, or
in the Weinstube room. Casual games are
usually available. Beginners are assured of a
warm welcome and free lessons.
The chess group keeps chess sets in a cabinet in the Jägerstube and encourages members to play friendly games at any time.

Campers
After a very long winter, camping season
has finally arrived!!! It's still a little chilly at
night, but a little “liquid warmth” and a
campfire at night will take care of that. Due
to submission deadlines, I’ll have to assume
that all went well with Farm clean up, and
thank everyone who came out to pitch in!
The Campers Committee have met throughout the winter, and have set out goals for
this year. Our plans include the following:
• Rehabilitation of the horse shoe pits
• Expand the fenced in area at the pavilion
• Add lighting around the pavilion fencing
• Purchase, and install surround sound at
the pavilion (we were using a borrowed
system).
• Expand our Canada Day celebration to a
weekend long event. (details to follow)
A reminder to everyone that there is a link
on the Club’s website to the “Farm Events”
calendar, if you need to check dates, and
times for events at the Farm.
Retirement Party
To all Concordia Club Members and
Friends: On Tuesday, the 14th of May
the Club is hosting a retirement party
for Peter Pijet, in our hall, from 7pm
– 10pm.
If you haven’t already done so, add June 8th
to your calendar, for our Spring Picnic, featuring “Seven Castles”!
The admission, of $10, will go towards a retirement gift. I would also
like to ask the Groups for an additional donation. Peter was employed
in our Club for over 32 years and has
helped make our Club what it is
today. Please come out and support
this event. There will be hot finger
food available and of course cash bar.

Concordia Chöre
Frühling kommt bald, und ich bin sicher,
dass auch die Skifahrer es nicht mögen,
dass Schnee vielleicht kommt, obwohl wir
schon etwa 10C hatten.
Bankside Terrasse singen konnten. Art hatte
Samstag, 6. April im Alpen Club gesungen.
Unsere Chöre waren wirklich gut und wir
haben einigen tolle Applaus für beide Chöre
bekommen. Wir hatten auch etwas gutes zu
Essen!
Eine Weile zurück hatten wir unsere Chor
Vorstandswahlen und ich freue mich ein
Bild des neuen Chorvorstand zeigen zu
duerfen. Mit Ausnahme von Joe Liebel,
haben wir:
In der ersten Reihe:
Christine Schwegel, Ulrike Schmidt, Helmut
Kruschat, Tanya Rahn-Kubasta und Ilse
Gessner.
In der hinteren Reihe:
Fred Trautrim, Caitlin St. John, Andre

CONCORDIA CHOIRS
Spring is coming soon, and I’m sure even
the skiers wouldn’t like that snow that is
predicted after currently seeing temperatures of about 10C.
Art Beier was overjoyed to have the Male
Choir sing for him and some of his guests at
Bankside Terrace. Art got a front-row seat
and even got to request some music. We got
to sing in the dining room which was filled
with those who had just finished their supper. Art treated us to some refreshments
afterwards.
We sang with the Transylvania Choir and a
number of other choirs from the DKSB on
Saturday April 6 at the Alpine Club. Our
choirs performed really well and we got
some great applause for both choirs. They
also provided us with great food!
A while back we had our Choir Board elections and I am pleased to be able to provide
a picture of the new choir board. With the
exception of Joe Liebel, we have:
In the bottom row:
17
Christine Schwegel, Ulrike Schmidt,
Helmut Kruschat, Tanya Rahn-Kubasta and
Ilse Gessner.
In the back row:
Fred Trautrim, Caitlin St. John, Andre
Schilha and Nick Zeis.
Even further back we had our Christmas
Party! There were honours presented that I
didn’t mention yet, so I will now.
The special Anniversary members are:
25 years - Heinz Schramowsky
40 years - Anne Marie Krueger,
Klaus Schwegel
50 years - Ursula Dressler,

As we are in the midst of the garden season,
a trip to a local nursery for plants and ideas
is in order. We will notify everyone of the
nursery of choice and time, etc. If you have
ideas and preferences, please give Edith a
call.
It is said that April showers bring May flowers. Well I hope that May will also bring us
lots of sunny days especially Sundays, so
that our group can get out their tennis gear
and head to Bechtel Park in Waterloo. The
tennis season starts again on May 5th, at
10:00 am.
It’s always helpful to see what perennials

prepare our gardens and beds for the season.
Edith is also trying to arrange a small plant
exchange, depending on where it could be
held.
Best of luck in those gardens.

On March 13th, we held our first bimonthly
Wednesday evening social. It was well
attended and everyone had a great time. It
also gave our executive a chance to meet
and discuss some issues. Our next
Wednesday social will take place on May
8th at 5:30 pm in the Schenke. Our snowbirds should all be back by then and hopefully will join us.
Quite a few from our group attended the
Springfest put on by Treffpunkt. It was a
huge success and we all had a wonderful
time. Great music, great friends and great
fun! Looking forward to next year’s event.
Our day trip has been planned and will take
place on August 24th. Please mark all these
dates on your calendar. I will also send out
an email reminder of all upcoming events.
Enjoy the spring days and I hope to see all
of you on May 8th.
