Message from THE FOUNDATION Dear Friends, Despite the downturn in the economy which began to take effect at the beginning of fiscal year 2008-2009, we were able to maintain our level of success thanks to your continued support of the National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation. We are most grateful for the generosity of the thousands of donors listed in this report, especially during these challenging times. The crucial funding you provide enables us to fulfill our vital mission – to support the world-class programs at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. As a result, our community (over 300,000 visitors during FY 08-09) is able to enjoy a year-round calendar of world-class events in performing arts, visual arts, history and literary arts, and education. One of our proudest accomplishments is the free programming provided to more than 35,000 students and educators throughout the year. The opening of the new Pete V. Domenici Education Center has allowed our Education Department to expand its acclaimed programming, and if you visit on any given day you will see the campus brimming with children and excitement. All of the signature programs of the Center have continued to grow and thrive, and new programs have opened up additional audiences. Thank you again for your loyal commitment to our community’s cultural gem. We cannot succeed without your support and attendance. Let’s continue to create a beautiful legacy for future generations - together. In gratitude, PETER SANCHEZ Board of Trustees Chair 2008-2010 CLARA R. APODACA President & CEO MISSION STATEMENT The National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, is dedicated to raising the funds necessary to support the programming and construction needs of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and building a legacy for future generation. 2008/2009 FOUNDATION MILESTONES & HIGHLIGHTS FUNDING Otero Dance Company, Streets of Cuba In keeping with its mission, the Foundation provided $556,450 in funding to support the programs of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. In-kind contributions totaled $30,000. This represented almost 98% of the Center’s program budget and included grant funding, private and corporate donations. Photo courtesy of Kim Jew Photography Photo courtesy of patrickcoulie.com THE TORREÓN FRESCO Master artist Frederico Vigil continued work on this masterpiece-in-progress. Upon completion in 2010, this crown jewel of our community will open to the public for all to enjoy. A future permanent exhibit of the Center’s Visual Arts Department, the fresco is sure to attract countless visitors from around the globe. The Foundation’s signature MARAVILLA Gala weekend reached new heights in 2008. The successful Garcia Honda Golf Fiesta kicked off the weekend’s events, culminating in the wonderful Gala and popular silent auction. The 2008 MARAVILLA events resulted in net proceeds of $352,000, surpassing 2007 net proceeds of $327,500. A percentage of the auction art proceeds designated to the ART for the ARTISTS Fund were once again allocated to the Community Gallery in the Center’s Art Museum. This wonderful gallery highlights local and regional artists in year-round rotating exhibits. The Foundation hosted Family Fun & Wellness Day - its second annual health fair in conjunction with the Center’s signature community event “Dia del Niño”. With their proceeds benefitting the Foundation, the museum store La Tiendita and La Fonda del Bosque restaurant experienced strong sales with loyal customers and popular events. La Fonda’s signature Sunday Brunch and performance-night dinners continue to draw a large following, and its catering department continues to grow. La Tiendita’s trunk shows, booksignings and festive Regalos Holiday Shopping Fair continued to draw large crowds. NATIONAL HISPANIC CULTURAL CENTER HIGHLIGHTS Director Shelle Sánchez, PhD EDUCATION PROGRAM The Pete V. Domenici Education Center at the National Hispanic Cultural Center is now complete, operating and winning awards! The Domenici Education Center was awarded a top environmental certification, LEED Gold, (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council. This newest capital addition houses the Cultural Center’s Education program, the Instituto Cervantes and the Spanish Resource Center. The Domenici Education Center supports instruction, interaction, experimentation, outreach, mentorship/internship, residencies, student exhibitions and conferences across all disciplines of the arts, humanities and scholarship. The Domenici Education Center was initiated in June 2009 by children and youth summer programs – the classrooms were filled with students, the hallways were filled with laughter and art supplies escaped into every room. SURDNA Photo courtesy of patrickcoulie.com In March 2009, the Education Program received a $50,000 grant from the prestigious, philanthropic Surdna Foundation based in New York, with the possibility of two additional summers of funding as well. These funds were granted specifically to support the Summer Youth Institutes at NHCC - the Voces Writing Institute for Youth and the Manoa Project: Ensemble Apprenticeship. Both of these summer institutes completed their eighth summer in June 2009 – offering students from throughout New Mexico the opportunity to engage in intensive arts training with highly accomplished teachers and mentors – all tuition-free. BRAVOS AWARD The VOCES Writing Institute for Youth at the National Hispanic Cultural Center received the 2009 Bravo Award for Excellence in Literary Arts from the Albuquerque Arts Alliance. The NHCC Education program was delighted to receive the award in the 25th annual award celebration that that honors excellence in the Albuquerque arts community. Voces is an intensive literary arts program whose effects last long beyond the four weeks of the workshop. Each summer, between 18 and 22 motivated students ages 14 to 18, from across New Mexico, take part free of charge. These students from backgrounds of all kinds are immersed in the craft of writing - spending five days a week, seven hours a day learning to shape and share words and ideas. “You see, this program isn’t about a month in June,” a former student wrote, “This program is about a lifetime of opportunity..!” Director Carlos Vasquez HISTORY & LITERARY ARTS The seventh annual National Latino Writers Conference took place May 21-23, 2009 at the NHCC and featured such nationally recognized authors as Josefina Lopez, author of Real Women Have Curves and children’s literature author René Colato Lainez, winner of many prestigious awards in his field. Literary genres covered included: the novel, short fiction, memoir, children and young adult literature, poetry and news writing. As a result of attending the conference, several registrants had their work published. The NHCC was a primary supporter of the conference. The exhibit Three Sisters: Corn, Beans and Squash, was developed as part of a collaboration with the New Mexico Community Foundation. The exhibit explored the botanical, nutritional, and cultural basis of these basic foods, so important to the sustenance of the Hispano and Pueblo populations of New Mexico for centuries. In conjunction with the exhibit, a catalogue and recipe book was developed in collaboration with La Fonda del Bosque restaurant on campus. The exhibit is ready to travel and is useful for schools emphasizing good nutritional practices. The exhibit Nao de China: The Manila Galleon Trade, 1564-1815 was mounted in collaboration with the General Consul of the Philippines in Los Angeles, the Consulate of Mexico in Albuquerque, the Filipino American National Historical Society and the Filipino American Foundation of New Mexico. This extraordinary exhibit explored the relationship between Mexican and Philippine societies as a result of the galleon trade. Accompanying the exhibit was a catalogue containing the results of the research undertaken to mount the exhibit. Again, primary support came from the NHCC Foundation. The exhibit is ready to travel and has received the interest of several museums. Director Tey Marianna Nunn, PhD VISUAL ARTS Three museum exhibits closed in 2009 and five new exhibits opened the same year! The latter include the reinstallation of ¡Aqui Estamos!, the rotating exhibition of the museum’s permanent collection. NaturalMente the newest community art gallery exhibition, features the work of Fernando Delgado, Rita Padilla Haufmann. Carol Sanchez, and Camilla Trujillo. Finally the NHCC Art Museum staff is extremely pleased to announce almost 100 new acquisitions to the permanent collection in 2009! We are looking forward to sharing and exhibiting many of these new additions 2010 In September, Confluencias, a major exhibition of Contemporary Cuban Art opened and a major catalog for this show was published in November. This was the second catalog published by the Museum staff this year. The other catalog, with an essay by Tomás Ybarra Frausto came out in January. Director Reeve Love, PhD PERFORMING ARTS Otero Dance Company, Rhythm and Passion – November 22, 2008 This vibrant performance, created by internationally acclaimed Argentine dancers Gloria and Claudio Otero, combined tango, salsa, and gaucho repertoire, performed against a backdrop of period scenery to evoke the bars and gambling halls of Buenos Aires, the streets and nightclubs of the Caribbean islands, and the ranches of rural Argentina. Real Women Have Curves – March 5-8, 2009 Josefina López’ warm, witty drama about five immigrant women who work in a sweatshop dress factory, later made into an award-winning film starring América Ferrera, has been described as a “hymn to a culture that values family and a girl who values herself.” The NHCC’s production, part of the Center’s annual Women and Creativity programming, was presented in partnership with Teatro Nuevo México. Latin Diva Series: Eva Ayllón – March 14, 2009 Afro-Peruvian singer Eva Ayllón is known as “the queen of landó.” Since the 1970s, she has blended indigenous Peruvian, African, and Spanish influences into a style known as música criolla, focusing on the elegant, lively genres of the coastal plains of Lima. This concert, tenth in the Center’s signature Latin Diva Series, was one of the best attended of the series, drawing a large and enthusiastic audience from Albuquerque’s Peruvian community.
