“The Gaguine Family” – A Primary Secondary Source Transcribed and translated from an anonymous manuscript by Raif Melhado Published on www.ketershemtob.com in 2013 with permission from David Gaguine Saul The original manuscript, which is reproduced below pp. 5-­‐6, appears on two deteriorating pages of notepaper in a scrapbook compiled by Rabbi Shemtob Gaguine. It is written in a clear, Sephardic hand, in language indicating that its author was likely close to the family. While the last line explicitly gives a preparation date of 1932, its authorship is not indicated on either page. If it was intended for publication, this draft was probably not the final mark-­‐up. This was one of the distinguished families that was expelled from Castile in 1492, withdrawing first to Morocco and subsequently rising to settle in the Land of Israel. The head of the family was the gifted Rabbenu Hayyim Gagin, who was called “The Gaon of Castile” – thus he is named by Rabbi Hayyim Benattar, author of Peri To’ar, in Siman 39. He composed an exalted book of responsa called Ngets Hayyim, the manuscript of which is in the possession of Rabbi Yaakov Toledano. Among his descendants was the greatly gifted Rabbi Hayyim Abraham Gagin of blessed memory, who was Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel, Rishon LeTsiyon, and leader of the Kabbalistic devotees. He was born in Jerusalem in 1796; in 1841 he was unanimously selected to serve as Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel, and he passed away in 1848. ‫היא אחת מהמשפחות המיוחסות שגורשו‬

He was the first person to become Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel in an official capacity as “Haham Bashi,” through a royal firman by Sultan Abdul Mejid, and he received many tokens of esteem from the Turkish King. His son was the gifted Rabbi Shalom Moshe Hai Gagine (the first letters of which spell Sameah), who was one of the dayyanim of Jerusalem. All communal matters in Jerusalem were handled through him because of his extensive wisdom and greatness, not only in Torah but also in worldly matters. Books that he wrote: (1) Yismah Leb, responsa. The minister Sir Moses Montefiore visited Israel during his lifetime, and [Gagin] composed a wonderful poem based on his name. He taught all the children in the Talmud-­‐Torah this poem in order to greet Sir Moses Montefiore with songs and music (the poem is published at the end of Yismah Leb, and you can find it there). ‫בימיו עלה השר סֵיר משה מונטיפיורי‬

His son Shemtob Gaguine was born in Jerusalem in 1884. In 1906, he was ordained as a Rabbi by the gifted [Rabbis] Chaim Berlin and Abraham Isaac Kook (today the Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel), and he completed his studies at the Yeshibah of "Tiferet Yerushalayim." His rabbis were the best of Ashkenaz, including the gifted Rabbi Lipman David Shuwaks, Ab Bet Din of the Hasidic community in the Land of Israel, and Rabbi Chaim Berlin of blessed memory. In 1911, the Gentlemen of the Mahamad, with the minister Yacoub de Cattaui Pasha at their head as presidente, invited him to serve in the office of dayyanut in Egypt, where the [Chief] Rabbi was the gifted Rabbi Aharon Raphael Bensimon – may his soul rest in Paradise! There, he found a wide pasture for his public work, being appointed a collector for charitable assistance to the poor as well as supervisor of the Talmud Torah. In 1919, he was called to serve in high office in Manchester as Rabbi of the Eastern Sephardim, and in 1920, the Gentlemen of the Mahamad in London invested in him the honorable office of Ab Bet Din of the Holy Community of Sahar Asamaim. In 1921, he was appointed by the Manchester Shechita Board to be one of the dayyanim on the Bet Din of our Ashkenazi brethren, where he had a positive impact on all the benevolent institutions. Of particular note was the Yeshibah, which would have closed its doors through lack of funds had he not collected enough assets to return it to its former state (see the Jewish Chronicle of Jan 25th, 1924, where he is thanked for his kindness by the board of the Yeshibah). Each year, he would collect funds to give wine and matsot to the poor [for Pesah], as well as hundreds of pounds annually on behalf of the poor in the Land of Israel and Misgav Ladach Hospital. On April 27th, 1923 he was unanimously elected as a deputy of the society of Mizrachi Zionists, on behalf of whom he sent out an appeal for the Keren Hayesod (Palestine Foundation Fund; see the Jewish Chronicle for April 27th, 1923).
