COORDINATOR’S COMMENTS
Welcome Summer!
This issue of the newsletter is a double is-
sue. Please hang onto it as you will not get another issue until August. Special thanks to everyone who attended our Annual Spring
Lunch on May 9th at Red Tail Country Club. It was a beautiful day,
Red Tail served us a lovely meal, and we ended the day with fabulous entertainment by the Avon High School Show Choir.
We have many events coming up over the Summer, so please check
out the newsletter to see all the activities we have planned. We
have plenty of seminars, movies, social events and trips to keep you
busy during the warm weather months ahead. We are also selling
raffle tickets for Mystery Trip #3 scheduled for Friday, August
10th. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Please see the inside of the
newsletter for further details.
A reminder that checks for all Senior Center events, trips, socials, etc. must be made out to Avon Seniors, Inc. Checks made out
to the Avon Senior Center are rejected by the bank, and will be returned to you.
If you are not yet aware, the Senior Center recently changed
our weekday hours. We are now open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
More of our activities take place earlier in the day when folks prefer to be out and about—so we simply adjusted our times to accommodate those preferences.
Finally, make sure to sign up for our upcoming strawberry & ice
cream social in June, and our apple pie and ice cream social in July.
Both events are just $5 each, and are accompanied by entertainment. Additionally, we have our Cleveland Part I Trip, Volunteer Appreciation Lunch, “Mamma Mia” at Playhouse Square Trip, our monthly lunch, and excellent speakers lined up for our General Meetings! Join us!
Be well. Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Carmelina

CREATION STORY
On the first day God created the cow. God said, "You must go to the field with the farmer all day
long, suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer I will give you a life span of
sixty years." The cow said, "That's a kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. Let me have
twenty years and I'll give back the other forty." And God agreed.
On the second day, God created the dog. God said, "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at
anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years." The dog said, "That's too
long to be barking. Give me ten years and I'll give back the other ten." So, God agreed.
On the third day God created the monkey. God said, "Entertain people, do monkey tricks, make them
laugh. I'll give you a twenty year life span." Monkey said "Monkey tricks for twenty years? I don't think
so. Dog gave you back ten, so that's what I'll do too, okay?" And God agreed again.

TRIPS)
FRIDAY, JULY 13
For this trip we will first travel to Lakeview Park Rose Garden and spend time strolling through the rose
gardens, the lovely beach and Lake Erie. After that we’ll head back to Avon and enjoy lunch (at your own expense) in the Orchid Room at the Miller Nature Preserve and Conservatory. After lunch we will view the tropical plants, orchids, palms, and oriental collection and even some meat-eating plants. Admission to the Conservatory is $2/person so please come prepared.
On the fourth day God created man. God said, "Eat, sleep, play, party, enjoy. Do nothing, just enjoy,
enjoy. I'll give you twenty years." Man said, "What? Only twenty years? No way man. Tell you what, I'll
take my twenty, and the forty the cow gave back, and the ten the dog gave back and the ten the monkey
gave back. That makes eighty, okay?" "Okay," said God. "You've got a deal."
TUESDAY, AUGUST 21 (RSVP’S BEGIN JULY 16TH)
This morning we will travel to the Carlisle Visitor’s Center in LaGrange to enjoy the award winning Wildlife
Observation Area, exhibits, seasonal displays and the duck pond. Then we’ll have lunch at the Oberlin Inn (at
your own expense) before heading to Apple Hill for their Orchard and Farm Market. When we leave Apple Hill
we’ll start to head back home, stopping at Mill Hollow if time permits.
SO: That is why for the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, party, enjoy, and do nothing; for the
next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family; for the next ten years we do monkey tricks
to entertain our grandchildren; and for the last ten years we sit in front of the house and bark at everybody.
 Please RSVP by calling 934-2417. You may only RSVP for yourself (and a spouse) for each trip. Limit
on their van is 24 passengers. Leaving a voice mail does not guarantee a reservation.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 - 8:30 AM - 5 PM - HISTORIC & ETHNIC CLEVELAND—PART 1
This is the tour that started it all. Like a magic carpet ride, our tour will take us to visit ethnic and historical places
where immigrants came to build their lives, in this place we call home. We’ll start by seeing where Moses Cleaveland
first landed in 1796, and where later immigrants settled like Irishtown Bend plus we’ll stop at German and Lebanese
shops to sample their wares and see a special Asian market in our own Chinatown that draws shoppers from all over
Ohio. We’ll go by an Ohio City church that had hidden tunnels to help slaves on the Underground Railway escape to the
banks of the Cuyahoga, for boats to take them to Canada. We’ll have our morning stop at the famous Westside Market.
We’ll see where John D. Rockefeller got his start and where Abraham Lincoln visited twice and the memorial to him on
Public Square. We’ll stop in Cleveland’s University Circle and well known Little Italy, but also visit the original area of
Big Italy, and it’s most famous inhabitant, whose product became a worldwide success. We’ll see a small bakery where
all the bakers worked for Hough Bakery, a long time Institution. Although Hough closed in 1993 these bakers still use
the original recipes for their many delights. (The Bakery is too tiny for us to go in, but we promise you won’t be disappointed.) Our International and Historic Tour of Cleveland will combine culture, food, history and ethnic lunch, to give
you a unique view of the rich tapestry of cultures and heritage that make Cleveland “The Best Location in the Nation.”
Trip price is $65/person. Initial deadline to avoid cancellation is May 7th.
