In this topic we talked about childhood and growing up. In both texts we saw a
kind of misunderstood friendly relation from the parents’ side, which led to a discussion about what parents should and should not do as well as an analysis of the
relationship between child and parents. “Clara’s day” inspired us to discuss different issues in the teen-age period and the relationship between child and parents.

In this topic, we tried to look at immigration and minorities in the US from a lot of
different perspectives and in both fiction and non-fiction texts. First, we watched
the beginning of "Maria full of grace" to find out why people want to immigrate to
the US. We also talked about the American dream and what it takes for it to come
true, and we discussed whether the notion is just a myth or not. We focalized mainly on the African Americans and the Chicanos, and we watched "Gran Torino"
with two different purposes: to illustrate the problems among the different minority groups and to talk about the immigration as seen from a white (Polish) man's
point of view. All of the texts were used as a point of departure for a comparison
with the contemporary Danish society.

In this topic we concentrated on the most important historical, societal and cultural
conditions in South Africa based on presentations by the students. We read texts
from the 60's and the 80's and listened to parts of an interview with Nadine Gordimer to fully understand the situation during the Apartheid regime. This led to a discussion about civil rights in South Africa.

In continuation of the South Africa topic and the lack of equal rights between
black and white, our next topic, Australia, focalized on the difficulties of the aborigines in the contemporary Australian society. The two texts deal with the aborigines’ identity crisis and split between the two cultures. In the film we also saw the
situation from the white colonizer’s point of view.
