40TH ANNIVERSARY CENTRUM GALA DINNER AND AUCTION
40th Anniversary centrum gala dinner and auction saturday october 12, 2013 | The Commons, Fort Worden State Park, Port Townsend, WA presented by w e l c o m e Welcome to Kaleidoscope, Centrum’s celebratory 40th Anniversary Gala! A kaleidoscope offers a sensational visual metaphor for Centrum and its 40 years of impact in the lives of thousands of aspiring artists and learners of all ages. What begins, slowly changes over time, always influenced by that which came before. The same is true of Centrum and its many thousands of participants from age four to ninety-five! Centrum’s programs change lives, and we are here tonight to celebrate 40 years of extraordinary enrichment. Our 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala is a chance for you to show your support of Centrum and its mission. We encourage you to bid tonight, motivated by knowing that 100% of what you bid helps Centrum and the thousands of workshop students and adults whom we serve. We ask that you bid generously, knowing that you will be doing well by doing good! We are especially thrilled to debut an excerpt of a brand new documentary film about Centrum which will be released in 2014. Local filmmakers Jane Champion and Michael Delagarza have been documenting Centrum’s programs since 2000, and we hope you will be powerfully moved by the stories of our diverse and dedicated participants and faculty. We thank Jane and Michael for their own artistic contributions to our anniversary season. Finally, as we reflect upon these forty years with much gratitude to all those who brought us to where we are today, we also look forward to the incredible potential of Centrum’s on-going programs and the possibility of new and exciting ventures. With your help tonight, Centrum can fulfill its potential and continue to offer a kaleidoscope of transformative experiences for next year and beyond. Tonight’s event is particularly important to emerging artists, young and old, who cannot otherwise afford to experience what we offer without financial assistance. Your special participation in tonight’s auction and “Fund-a-Need” segment supports our annual programs and scholarships for these artists. Please don’t forget to purchase tickets for your opportunity to win a sevenday cruise on Holland America! One lucky winner will walk away tonight with this trip of a lifetime. This evening is the also result of the hard work, dedication and commitment of nearly 100 volunteers led by our 2013 Gala co-chairs, Debbi Steele and Kelli Conrads. Please join us in thanking them, their volunteer committee members, our most generous presenting sponsor, Kitsap Bank, auctioneer Jim Dever— and all of our Board and staff as we celebrate our achievements together! Thank you all for your continued support, and here’s to forty more years of life-changing programs at Centrum! Cynthia S. The ruby (gemstone of the 40th anniversary) possesses an eternal inner flame, symbol of the passion that’s kept Centrum alive and strong for the last 40 years and burns as fuel for its future. Kaleidoscope’s 40th Anniversary Gala Table Centerpieces celebrate that passion, incorporating symbols of earth (branches), water (beta fish), air (cardinals), and fire in the form of a rise of rubies. There is a centerpiece and bid card at each table; be sure to select and purchase your centerpiece early by writing your bid number on the card. At the close of the evening, volunteers will pack your centerpiece for its ride home. Centrum’s Voice Works draws extraordinary faculty as well as participants of all levels – what they have in common is their desire and love of making music. This year Voice Works featured the Birmingham Sunlights, joyous keepers of a deep-rooted American tradition associated with four-part gospel harmony singing. The Sunlights, along with other acclaimed faculty/musicians, including Pharis and Jason Romero, Linda and Dave Lay, Kristin Andreassen, Suzy Thompson, and more, led classes ranging from duet and trio singing and four-part a cappella to basic song writing. The womens’ singer showcase was an astonishing demonstration of powerful talent, and the annual Polka dot dance brought its usual hint of joy and playfulness. This year’s Festival represented a multiplicity of styles from Cape Breton, Basque, Cajun and more. What a way to spend the week living, learning, and jamming with masters of a wide array of fiddling styles, and most important, being “in community” with the bearers of fiddle traditions “It’s one of the most amazing opportunities I have ever known and I always get something out of it that makes a difference in how I continue to make music.” Artistic Director Suzy Thompson continued her momentum from last year and assembled a panoply of classes, performances and dances that offered cultural discovery and deepening of community for all. The Basque trio of Joseba Tapia, Javier Leturia, and –2013 voice works participant 8 Arkaitz Miner were a particular highlight with their unrelenting energy and their performance of both traditional and cutting-edge Basque music. They, along with our other talented artists, brought to life the art and the soul of community-based fiddle music. “The entire Basque troupe was incredible. All three of them made a huge effort to come and jam and interact with the participants even though they didn’t speak English that well. Music is a universal language, and they speak it so well.” –2013 fiddle tunes participant C e n t r u m p r o g r a m s The Port Townsend Writers’ Conference Jazz Port Townsend John Clayton, Artistic Director Erin Belieu, Artistic Director Since 1974, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference has provided writers of all levels with rigorous craft instruction in a nurturing environment. Whether writers come to create new work, to rethink and revise existing work, or whether they simply desire to be refreshed and renewed in the writing life, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference is the central heart of the Pacific Northwest literary scene. In 2014, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference returns to its historic ten-day model, which was in place from 1974 to 2004. July 10-20, such faculty as Artistic After 37 years, Jazz Port Director Erin Belieu, as well as Kim Addonizio, Robert Lopez, Emily Rapp, Dana Levin, Sam Ligon, and others, transform the inspirational environment of Fort Worden State Park into a supportive, craft-oriented community built around helping each writer take the next step in their writing life. Townsend is still going strong as one of the oldest and most respected Jazz workshops in the nation. Artistic Director John Clayton orchestrated a week-long opportunity for participants to meet other aspiring musicians, soak up a week of jazz in a seaside paradise, and leave as a better musician. Our faculty are not only great teachers, but also outstanding performers and entertainers, filling the week with exciting concert and club performances. Audiences were delighted by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists such as Anat Cohen, Clarence Acox, George Cables, Jeff and Gerald “I walked away with a sense of having found a community. There were so many creative, stimulating people to exchange ideas and experiences with.” –2013 port townsend writers’ conference participant 9 Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Cyrille Aimée, and many more. Centrum continues to draw the greats to this workshop and to provide lifechanging educational experiences to participants. When asked about highlights, one 2013 Participant said: “I made many friends, felt remarkably inspired, and am excited about how much better my performances will be, as I digest my new knowledge, and let it shine through me. All of the professional musicians, though they didn’t know me, were warm and inclusive.” C e n t r u m Artistic Director, Daryl Davis, once again brought some of the best performers and faculty to our Blues Festival this year, including Phil Wiggins, Sunpie Barnes, Warner Williams – to name a few. Participants enjoyed daily offerings in Hill Country, Delta and Piedmont styles, fingerpicking, blues guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, violin, mandolin, banjo, blues piano, bass, blues singing, and gospel choir, all taught by masters of the traditions – topped p r o g r a m s Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival Port Townsend Chamber Music Festival Daryl Davis, Artistic Director Lucinda Carver, Artistic Director The 2012-13 season for Centrum’s Chamber Music Festival had an superb finish with the return, after twelve years, of the Arianna String Quartet. Under the artistic direction of Lucinda Carver, Centrum is excited to continue to bring acclaimed chamber music to Port Townsend. Our 2013-14 season off with “Blues in the Clubs,” a free concert for kids, and an Acoustic Blues Showcase performance. This year’s Blues activities also include a weekend Blues Acoustic Guitar Intensive this month with master acoustic guitarists Mike Dowling and John Miller. “One of my favorite moments was when I realized the vastness of the opportunities to learn.” –port townsend acoustic blues festival participant 10 begins in November and is entiled, “Classics in Context.” Each performance will feature added elements highlighting the history and culture from the period of the music presented. As part of our Joseph F. Wheeler Celebration Series, all concerts are held in the intimate setting of the Wheeler Theater. C e n t r u m p r o g r a m s Centrum Artist Residencies For over 30 years, artists from around the world have come to Centrum seeking the opportunity to retreat into nature and focus on their art and inspiration while having the resources to support their creative process and to meet their daily needs. Residencies are open to Young Artists Project As one example of the many year-round young artists projects, the DANCE This! Camp at Centrum provides an opportunity for high school students to study a wide range of dance styles and techniques in a supportive, yet challenging atmosphere. Students participate in African, Ballet, Choreography, Hip-Hop and Modern dance classes with individuals or groups in all art genres. This program provides an ideal location of tranquility and natural beauty nestled in Fort Worden and boasts accessibility to amenities at the park and in downtown Port Townsend. 11 professional dance instructors from the Seattle area. “I found my confidence in dance and learned that I am capable of doing any type of music as long as I can connect the dances with my heart. Learning how to express my feelings through dance was a highlight.” –2013 dance this! participant C e n t r u m p r o g r a m s New Program: Port Townsend Ukulele Festival Marianne Brogan, Artistic Director In its inaugural year, Centrum’s 2013 Ukulele Festival resulted in a waiting list of more than 100 participants, all of whom have to wait for next year’s festival. Now that’s high demand! The “Uke” festival showcased national faculty members with 137 of Centrum’s newest friends. The beauty of the uke is that its music is universal – nearly any style or era of music is and can be replicated on a ukulele. Artistic Director Marianne Brogan led the acclaimed week with aplomb and two special sold-out concerts capped a magical week of sharing and learning, the likes of which our community has never seen! 12 a u c t i o n Centrum Gala Auction General Rules 1.
