Kaufman Ex-Officio Robert Chaiken, Member National Board of UAHC ~ Thoughts From Our Graduating Seniors as They were Printed in the Senior Recognition Service in May "If I were to point out one thing about Religious school that I remember as having the biggest influence on me, I would have to say the Open Room. Being young and learning about the basics of Judaism has proven invaluable to me. Throughout my life, being Jewish has always played an important role of who I am, and what I want to become. I loved singing, cooking, and playing throughout my childhood. Without the open room, my belief and interest in Judaism may not have been as strong. Along with my memories of the Open Room, I've also thoroughly enjoyed the Reform Jewish High School. It has taught me more about being Jewish, and also allowed me to make lasting friends with other Jewish teens from across the city that I may have never met. This experience is something that I will always cherish. I want to thank everyone who has helped me along my journey of becoming who lam." -David Baum "My family and I moved to Cincinnati and joined Wise Temple when I started ninth grade. Truthfully, I was overwhelmed by the size of the Temple and Congregation, and didn't think that I would adjust too easily. The Temple, which I had grown up in, was much smaller, and I felt like everyone was family to me. Luckily, I was wrong. I realized that, regardless of the size, there were great people at Wise who I wanted to meet and activities that I wanted to get involved in. Since I have moved here, I have worked in the Open Room and Wise Center Day Camp for two years, participated in some Wise Up programs, and met some extremely terrific people. Even though I have only spent four years here, I've adjusted so much that I feel like I've been here forever. The activities that I've participated in and special people I've met, have all become a part of me. Judaism will always be a huge part of my life, and I will permanently have the memories that I've made here to look back on forever." -Rebecca Brown r .~ - - - - - - - clip and save - , SEPTEMBER SERVICE SCHEDULE [NOTE: All Saturday morning Shabbat Services are preceded by a Study Group at 9:30 a.m ., which is open to the Congregation. *No Study Group on September 30. R'fu-at Ha-nefesh: A Service of Strength and Healing of the Soul; Moments of Reflection Four years ago, we began an alternative worship service, held one weekday evening each month. This brief service, created by Rabbi Kamrass and Rabbi Steinberg is based on a creative liturgy, relying on the centerpieces of both music as well as meditative readings and moments of reflection. This unique service, known as "R'fu-at Ha-nefesh: A Service of Strength and Healing of the Soul," is for anyone who seeks some quiet moments of reflection, the opportunity to connect more deeply with the soul within, and to enhance the spiritual awareness of God's presence in one's life. It is for those who are struggling with loss as well as those who simply seek to find a greater sense of balance in the stressful pace of daily life. It is for those who look for comfort in their faith. It is for those who want to bring their experiences, their struggles and their gratitude to a moment of renewal. Please take note of the dates of the R'fu-at Ha-nefesh services for this year, and mark your calendar so that you can participate in this powerful and meaningful service. Come and experience this service at least once, for it provides the essential ingredients for us to reflect on our lives. All R'fu-at Ha-nefesh Services begin at 7:00 p.m. until 7:45 p.m.: September 18, October 16, November 20, December 18, January 22, February 19, March 19, April 16 and May 21. Memory Of Natalie Feld Lives On Even though Natalie Feld passed away on January 14, 1999, she will long be remembered by many people in our community, and she will continue to positively touch the lives of many people who never knew her for years to come. "Natalie's interests were broad and her spirit was very strong", said Rabbi Lewis Karnrass who knew Natalie for fifteen years as a member of Isaac M. Wise Temple's Congregation. "She knew what she wanted in life, and she knew how to make far-reaching provisions that assured the continued success of organizations she considered special." Natalie was unique! To understand the breadth of her interests, one need only review the number of organizations she supported ... the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the Cincinnati Opera, the Main Public Library, Hebrew Union College, and of course Isaac M. Wise Temple, to name but a few. Isaac M. Wise Temple was special to Natalie Feld. She loved Plum Street Temple and cherished her family's Jewish heritage. "Many times we spoke of the great pride she felt for her parents and grandparents and the wonderful legacy they left for her and our community", Rabbi Karnrass said. So important, in fact, was Natalie's pride in her Jewish family heritage that she made significant charitable provisions in her Will to perpetuate her and her Family's presence within the Congregation. Examples of her philanthropy include: • Generous support of The Plum Street Temple Historic Preservation Fund • Creation of the Fe1d Altar Floral Fund for the High Holy Days at Plum Street Temple, and for the Yahrzeits of her parents, Abraham and Katie Feld, and her sister, Eleanor Feld. • Endowment of a memorial bookshelf focusing on travel within Wise Center's library. • Endowment of The Eleanor and Natalie Feld Memorial Lecture. • Significant support for Isaac M. Wise Temple's endowment fund. "Clearly, Natalie gave great thought to the importance of Isaac M. Wise Temple in her life", said Dianne Rosenberg, Temple President. "We are very proud of her long participation as a member of our Congregational Family and enormously grateful for her significant bequest. Thanks to her vision and generosity, our services, programs and facilities will help touch the lives of countless congregants far into the future." Natalie Feld's presence lives on at Isaac M. Wise Temple. This is a wonderful service where our newest students formally dedicate themselves to Jewish learning. The service takes place during the Simchat Torah service celebrating the completion of the cycle of reading the Torah and beginning the cycle anew. All students who are in the Kindergarten class or are new to the first through third grades and have not been consecrated before are eligible to partiCipate in this service. A meeting for parents will be held on September 18 from 6:30-7:30 at Wise Center. There will be a rehearsal for the students during regular religious school hours on Sunday, October 15 at Plum Street Temple. REUGIOUS SCHOOl; OPEN HOUSE Plan on joining us for our annual open house on Sunday, September 24. This will be your chance to meet your child's teacher as well as meet our new Director of Education & Lifelong Learning as well as our new Assistant Director of Education & Youth Programs. We look forward to seeing you there! YOUTH CHOIR- OPEN TO ALL MID-WEEK STUDENTS IN GRADES 4-7 Family services are open to the entire congregation, but are geared especially for children in grades 1 through 6. A highlight of these services is the singing of the Youth Choir cOf\1prised of Wise Temple Hebrew and/or Religious School students in grades 4-7. Practices are roughly two times per month during the school year, on Wednesday afternoons during Hebrew school from 5:30-6:00. The dates of the Family Friday Services for the coming year are: November 3, December 22, January 19, February 9, March 16 and May 18. All services begin at 7:15 p.m. If your child likes to sing or the idea of leading our congregation in song is appealing, or if learning the prayers in an informal and musical atmosphere sounds like fun, then choir is the right place for your child. If you have questions, call Cantor Kohn at 793-2556. To sign up your child, call Terri Snavely at 793-2997. r---------- - ----------------. The Consecration Class and their families hope that you will join them for a joyous Simchat Torah Celebration at 7:00 p.rn. - October 20, 2000 at Plum Street Temple. Yizkor Service 10:45 a.m. - October 21, 2000 at Wise Center We want your voice (and the rest of you too!) for our Wise Temple choir, Kol Rinah. The purpose of the shoir is threefold: first, to beautify worsh ip services with famil iar and new melodies; second, to provide a Jewish venue for the musical talents and gifts of Wise Temple members; third, to create community with others of all ages and stages who share a love of choral singing. We have an exciting year of firsts to look forward to. Our choir will be traveling to Fort Wayne, Indiana at the invitation of Hazemir Choir. This is the group which sang with us at Plum Street Temple to commemorate the 1Ooth yahrzeit of Isaac M. Wise. Now we have the honor of visiting their congregation and bringing our gifts of song and spirit to them. At the end of March, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion wi ll mark its 125th anniversary on Shabbat eve at Plum Street Temple. Kol Rinah will be the core and host group of singers for this community-wide celebration. The glorious music of Sulzer and Lewandowski will be featured. Rehearsals occur on Monday evenings, usually twice a month. Reading music is a plus, but not a necessity. Your enthusiasm for Singing and commitment to the choir are the only requirements. Please call Cantor Kohn if you have any questions or if you think being part of Kol Rinah is right for you. We look forward to adding new voices and faces to those who have become part of the choir already. We hope yours will be among them. r.~ ISAAC M.
