Math with Mrs. Allmon
Saira Nelson
Mrs. Allmon was born in Madison, Wisconsin and has
two brothers; she is the middle child. Her very first job
was delivering the Penny Saver, a newspaper, and believe
it or not, she DID like it. Her favorite subject in school
was Science. She started teaching math in 1986. She
wanted to be a science teacher, but she didn’t do very well
in that class. She was very strong in math, and that did not
give a whole lot of job opportunities. She did not want to
work with money so teaching was her next best option! Her favorite part of teaching is working with the students. If she could teach another subject she would
teach science! (She and Ms. Hayes should switch subjects for a day!!) She would
never leave the middle school though! She does not like elementary schools because they are too clingy and she doesn’t like the high school levels, because
some students just don’t care. The Middle School is right in between and gives
her the space she needs, and students still care about their grades; so we are perfect!! She will not tell me who her favorite student is, but I know she has one!
(It’s me! Just kidding!J) She has been to Canada and prefers Elmo over Big Bird!
Her favorite animal is a Chinchilla! Seriously, she DOESN’T like ice-cream, but
she loves pecans and almonds (Go Figure!) and her favorite food is crab legs.
(Gross. Ha Ha!) Her favorite clothing brand is Gloria Vanderbilt. (I didn’t know
that existed, but Mrs. Otto said she thinks they sell it at Kohl’s!) Well, that about
wraps it up! Thank you Mrs. Allmon for the time you spent with me doing this!

MOVIE REVIEW
“The Lorax”

Yes, from the same people that brought us “Horton
Hears a Who” we have” The Lorax.”
Now I know what you’re thinking “Dr Seuss!? Isn’t that
for kindergarteners?”
Yes, it’s true that Dr. Seuss’s books are for beginning
readers, and are quite imaginative to say the least, but
let’s face it. Everyone has a favorite Dr.Suess story.
This movie has the whole package: love, romance, action, comedy, and even has an environmental
message. And of course it’s rated G. The story tells of a
town called Thneedville which is founded by the
Oncelor, who made the mistake of cutting down all the
tress to make thneeds, which is a soft blanket material
that can be used as almost anything. Now Thneedville is
abnormal because everything is fake, including: the
trees, grass, bushes, and they even have to pay for air!
All the pollution goes outside Thneedville, which is
why no one is allowed to leave according to town
“mayor” Mr. O’Hare who makes a fortune off of
O’Hare Air which is where everyone gets their air! So
you see, it’s all a cycle. But one 13 year old boy is daring to break that cycle in order to impress a girl and find
her a real life tree. And with the help of his crazy grandma and a few other friends, he just might succeed. This
is a truly entertaining movie and I would recommend
this for people of all ages. Also, as you know we recently had Earth Day, so this movie ties in well with that.

Hunger Games

Now, I know that this
may be old news by
now, but since the Hunger Games is on DVD
or will be soon, I figured I should review it.
I saw the movie the
Friday before Spring
Break, and I’ll say I
was not disappointed
(mostly). The acting is
pretty good, the effects
look great, but my biggest concern is the
characters and how
rushed they were. 20 of
the tributes had little to
no dialogue, or even
appearance. The vast
majority of the characters were simply
brushed over, but that
is really the movie’s
only major flaw. The

TEMPLE RUN - VIDEO GAME

Temple Run is on the Ipod and the Android Market Place, so you can
get it for free. The plot of the game is that you have stolen a treasured
artifact. The creatures who were the guardians of the artifact are angry
and after you. So you have to run, jump, and slide to get points to win
the game. Have fun, and good luck!

Star Trek Online

For two years, I’ve been playing an M.M.O.R.P.G. (Massive Multiplayer
Online Role-Playing Game) called Lord of the Rings Online. I’d seen the movies
and fallen in love, enjoying the gentle, calming effects of the Shire and the overwhelming, beautiful feel of Elven cities. I played the online game, finding the
movies and books very well displayed in this game! I’ve been a bit biased, maybe
even a little close-minded, to other M.M.O.R.P.G.’s, thinking I would never fall in
love with a game as I had with Lord of the Rings Online. Then I found out about
Star Trek Online.
I had seen the original Star Trek series, absolutely adoring the character of
Mr. Spock, and, like Bilbo Baggin’s Tookish side, my inner captain was awakened!
It all starts with the beginning of your character creation screen. You may
play as an Andorian, frigid creatures from the icy moon of Andoria (also Andor)
with blue skin, white hair, and a pair of antennae. You could choose a Bajoran, a
race of oppressed, humanoid people living on the planet called Bajor. Benzites are
available, which are a hairless, humanoid race with smooth skin that can range
from blue, purple, and green in color. They have a protrusion that gives them a
very distinguished nasal lobe and brow. There are two fish-like barbells that droop
off from the top of their upper lip. Also playable, are the Betazoid, a race of very
humanoid creatures, the only difference being their eyes with abnormally large,
completely black irises. They are very proficient in the skill of telepathy, something enabled to them because of a lobe in their brain called the paracortex. You
may also play as a Bolian, bald humanoids with blue skin and a smaller ridge running from the back of their heads to their noses. You may also, of course, play as a
human. Hopefully all of you know what those look like! Also playable, are Saurians, and Trills, which are humanoid. Last, but definitely not least, you may play
as a Vulcan, a humanoid race with pointed ears (similar to Elves from the Lord of
the Rings) and long, upwards-rising eyebrows.
The class system is unlike most other M.M.O.R.P.G.’s and you may play as
a Science, Tactical, or Engineering Officer. Each of these can do the same thing,
for the most part it seems, although Science Officers have the ability to heal members of your team.
The combat system is also varied. There is both on-ground combat and space
combat. On-ground combat has two controls, R.P.G. settings and also a setting
that makes it sort of like a ‘First-Person-Shooter’ game. The second setting sets a
target marker on the screen which you can control by moving your mouse around.
If you use the R.P.G. settings (which I’ve recently found to be a tad more effective), then you simply target and attack, without worry of aiming. The R.P.G. settings make it seem a bit more like any normal M.M.O.R.P.G., but when you try
out space combat, you realize the strange, unique feel to the game.
Your ship has an energy level, and you can bring your energy levels up to
the very top to move quickly, or all the way to the bottom to stop. Sometimes the
level in the middle makes it easier to strategize before moving on. There is also a
way to use full-throttle, which can be toggled with the key combination, “Shift +
R.” Be careful when using your full-throttle, if you plan on going into combat.
Being in full-throttle will drain your shield and weapon energy.
Speaking of shield and weapons energy, there is a way to easily choose
what you want to focus on. In combat, you should probably give the most energy
to either your shields or your weapons. Giving your speed one-hundred percent of
the energy isn’t a good idea when in battle against Klingons, unless you’re attempting to escape.
For the most part, space combat is extremely slow. You basically maneuver
your ship around (turning takes a very long time) so that your strongest weapons
are facing your enemy. Your enemy’s shields need to be brought down, so you
have to fire your strongest weapons towards the weakest shields so that you can
do the most damage to the ship.
There is only one server, making the User Interface a bit intimidating at
times, but to be honest, there truly aren’t many people playing. Also, if you are
joining a game with means for roleplaying, you will probably be disappointed.
The game is not set up for roleplaying as such yet, although there are still
‘emotes’ like in other games. While there are a few insistent roleplayers (found in
a place called Quarky’s Bar, apparently), the roleplay you might find there is not
very fulfilling.
Also, there’s always the problem that Vulcans, like me, run into, with no
emotions and only logical decisions! However… *Vulcan salute* Live long and
prosper. And I shall see you in space.
Mrs. Nix
Saira Nelson
Mrs. Nix started teaching in 1999 by ACCIDENT!! She was well
known for her crafts around town and the art teacher had just stepped
down at St. Paul in Valparaiso. Then she obviously came to CMS!!!
Mrs. Nix loved reading and learning new things when she was a kid.
She also loved the school atmosphere! Her favorite subjects in
school were English and Art! She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana
and was the baby of 7 children! (Holy Cow!) Her first job was being
a “set up girl” at a local restaurant called Char-King. (She was 14
years old!!) She loved going to work because there would always be
this “hot guy” and his family that came in every Sunday. They would
blush when caught each other looking and would flirt terribly! (Does
Mr. Nix know about this?! Ha Ha!) Her favorite flavors of ice cream were Coffee, Almond,
Coconut, Caramel, and Hot Fudge. Mrs. Nix’s favorite part of teaching is seeing that children
are developing a nice work ethic and overcoming their fear that they cannot create. She also
loves when her artwork inspires kids in theirs’! When I asked her if she would rather stay at
CMS and teach art or go into Psychology she just laughed. She even called her husband and
had me speak to him! (It was hilarious!) It was not even two days before this that THEY were
talking about her being a Psychologist! She said this was a perfect fit because she was interested in Art Therapy! (Mrs. Nix?! A Therapist!!?) Yes, I know! Surprising? I think yes! She prefers Batman over Spiderman (yes!) and Buzz Light Year over Blue’s Clues (How could you!?),
only because she doesn’t really know anything about Blue’s Clues. Her favorite color is blue
and she has been to France!! (Can she speak French?!) Her favorite student is “Of Course, it’s
gotta be Lion!!” Exact words!! She said that she is leaving that to you guys to guess who that
is! Her funny/moving story in class was about this one boy. He was a big bully, and they were
working with clay and spray bottles. Every time she turned around he would spray some kid.
She would just ignore it, but after a while she got tired of it, and called him up to the front of
the class and sprayed him from head to toe until he was soaked! She said it was like she was
possessed, she just couldn’t stop! The kids all laughed and then they both started laughing! She
waited the next day to see if he got her in trouble but nothing happened! From then on he even
called her Ma’am!! “From that point on it was like something snapped in both of us. We were
both different, changed, whole new people. He became my best student and was nice to everyone!” (Now that is an Art Therapy moment!!) That is just amazing, Mrs. Nix!! Thank you for
your time and devotion with me while writing this article!!! Here are some things students

Trapped: Escape of the Mansion

Our time in that room really…enlightened us about how the butler thought. We found
he was a very, very crafty person indeed. Based on the diary he kept, he had illustrated exactly
what he had done.
The ‘boss’… or, that’s how the butler referred to him...was busy with his job, and this
job of his preoccupied him most of the time. The boss himself was a man of the stock market…
and he had invested quite well in it. This money, plus the inheritance that he was left from his
family had been keeping him wealthy.
But yes… the butler was quite sly. Perhaps he was insane for going to such great
lengths with his plan to ultimately take down the boss, steal as much money as he could, and
get out of there. The plan itself was so complex, and had obviously taken a bit of thinking. Let
me explain.
The butler himself was responsible for taking Alice to the hospital to see her mother.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, around mid-afternoon, he would drop her off, and make his way
down to the hospital pharmacy. There, cyanide was kept. After spending so much time hanging
around there, the butler had been able to steal it. Somehow it had worked, and he was able to
steal just enough of the poison.
The killing of the boss, which involved slipping the cyanide into a bottle of red wine,
occurred a few days after the boss had been informed that the mother was going to die for sure.
The night he was poisoned, the boss had ordered a bottle of red wine, which was brought to
him immediately. The boss had already been drunk, and during his state of drunken slurs and
obliviousness the butler had got valuable information from him. This information was vital to
steal the amounts of money the butler wanted.
After the boss was dead, the butler disposed of his body quickly. Alice had been in her
bedroom, asleep. Apparently the butler had disposed of the body in a pond in the middle of the
woods.
Lucas and I had trouble deciphering several pages of rushed, manic script of the butler’s
feelings after the murder. The butler was a bit confused, and he knew that he needed to get Alice out of the house. So, he decided to start a small fire in the kitchen by setting a few pieces of
bread on fire and setting them on the counters. Then he ran to Alice’s bedroom, urging her to
escape the fire through the emergency escape ladder, which she did. Once she was safely on the
ground, the butler had ordered her to run to town, and take a bus to the hospital, where her
mother was.
Once Alice had been on her way (the butler did not seem to care if Alice had even made
it to the hospital), he doused the fire, and prepared for his escape.
But here’s what left Lucas and I scratching our heads: Why hadn’t police investigated
the house? Hadn’t Alice told authorities? We had no idea why this house was still standing in
shape like this.
We decided to pick around Alice’s bedroom for the escape ladder. And there I was: digging around the abandoned bookshelf of a little girl, casting picture books to the side, old photos, and pictures that Alice had drawn herself. It was somewhat odd being in the house of a girl
that was most likely dead. Where had she gone?
I ponder this, my mind racing. I looked all around the room, at the bed, the floor, Lucas,
and the window that seemed to only be big enough for a little girl to squeeze through.
Climbing onto her bed, the sheets still mussed, I leaned over the headboard to see if the
sought for escape ladder was there. It wasn’t, but I found a great deal of little teddy bears and
plush animals.
I was beginning to lose hope.
LUCAS
The escape ladder was especially hard to find. Where could the little girl have
put it? Had the butler moved it once Alice had left the house? It was a possibility.
I was kneeling down by the girl’s wardrobe, going through the various colorful
church dresses when I found it, cast aside and forgotten. It was a crumpled heap, though it still
looked usable. I secretly prayed it would support our weight on the way out.
“Oh, you finally found it.” Lauren casts me a relieved smile, scooting herself off
of the bed and walking over to me. “Now the question is how to assemble this thing.” Her eyes
probe the ladder in my hands hopefully, as if she was already forming the plan of what she
would do when she got home.
I strode over to the window, pitifully trying to attach it. How did these things
work? Was I going to have to screw this to the window, or…
“Lucas, let’s figure out how to open the window before we try to figure the ladder out.” Her voice is almost condescending. “Right…” I try to wave it off.
Her fingers slide against the sides of the window, and she opens it carefully. As soon as
it is opened, we both sigh as fresh air fills the room, replacing the staleness we had been breathing all of this time.
The air was a bit chillier than we had expected. All the same, it was nice to feel
it on our faces. Even though it was a small action, it helped to bring us peace of mind, in a way.
“All right, let’s figure out this ladder and get out of here,” I mutter, taking the
bundle in my hands.

4 slices whole-wheat bread (1-ounce each)
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
4 teaspoons paprika
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 egg whites
1/2 cup skim milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
4 (6 ounce) skinless boneless chicken breast halves, pounded to 1/2-inch thickness
Olive oil cooking spray
1 jar good-quality marinara sauce (about 3 1/2 cups)
3/4 cup (3 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons (1/2-ounce) shredded Parmesan
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Place the bread in the bowl of a food processor and process until fine crumbs are
formed, about 25 to 30 seconds. Put the crumbs on a baking sheet and bake for 12
minutes, until golden. (You will wind up with about 1 1/3 cups toasted crumbs.)
In a medium bowl, toss the crumbs with oregano, garlic powder, paprika, 1/4 teaspoon
salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. In another bowl, whisk the egg whites and milk together.
In a third bowl stir together the flour, and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Dip each piece of chicken, 1 piece at a time, in flour, shaking off
excess, then egg, then bread crumbs, shaking off excess.
Increase oven temperature to 400 degrees. Place breaded breasts in a glass baking dish
and spray on each side with cooking spray, about 5 seconds total per side. Bake breasts
until cooked though and crumbs are browned, about 15 minutes. Top with marinara
sauce, mozzarella and parmesan and return to oven for an additional 10 minutes, until
cheese is bubbling.

Why you should watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Alright, I know what you’re thinking: “Dumb baby show!” “I’m too old for it!” “ME? Watching a kid’s show?”
But I wouldn’t recommend it if there weren’t a reason.
“Why should I watch a show for 4 year old girls?”
This is NOT your average cartoon. It was not created so your kids would just be distracted and be quiet. It was
created so that people of all ages could watch and laugh along with the characters. Lauren Faust, the show’s creator, says on her Deviant Art page that “I created the show for little girls AND their parents.” The stories and problems on the show are relatable to anyone, so a wider age range of audiences are watching.
“What happens in the show?”
In the show there’s a world inhabited by horses, called Equestria. There are unicorns, whose horns have telekinetic
powers and can perform all kinds of magic. There’s pegasi (a horse with wings), who have their cloud homes and
maintain weather throughout Equestria. Then there are earth ponies, who are normal ponies and usually do the
farming and caring for the land. Together all the ponies live in a monarch society, being ruled by two princesses,
who are alicorns (meaning that they have wings and horns). One princess is Celestia, who raises the sun every day
and keeps order in the kingdom. The other princess is her little sister, Princess Luna, who raises the moon to bring
night. The ponies in the story are a mix of all of the ponies, two Unicorns, two Pegasi, and two Earth Ponies. Together as best friends they represent the “Elements of Harmony”, which make up their personalities.
However, the show is not all dress-up and tea parties like the older generations. There’s lots of action, the ponies
get into realistic situations, and sometimes end up fighting their enemies!
“Who are the characters?”
Twilight Sparkle- A Unicorn who’s incredibly smart and has massive magic ability. Sent by Princess Celestia to Ponyville, she runs a library and studies the meaning of friendship as
Celestia’s best student. Twilight is a perfectionist though, as her tidiness causes her to get into trouble
throughout the series. Her element is magic.
Applejack- An Earth Pony farmer, she runs an apple orchard with her family. Applejack is a strong southern pony; works hard and can never tell a lie, and she represents honesty in their
friendship. She lives on her farm with her older brother, Big Macintosh, her little sister Apple Bloom, her
grandmother, Granny Smith, and her herding dog, Winona. As a joke, everyone in her family has a
name that has something to do with apples.
Fluttershy- A quiet and caring Pegasus. Fluttershy prefers not to talk to other ponies and instead focuses her time taking care of forest animals. Like her name, she’s very shy, and
speaks in a soft whisper even around her friends. She represents kindness.
Rainbow Dash- Fast and agile, Rainbow Dash is known for being the fastest
pony in all of Equestria. And she isn’t bragging! She is known for a flying trick called the Sonic Rainboom, which is when she goes so fast, she breaks the speed of sound and shatters the color spectrum!
But when she isn’t practicing moves, she’s with her friends, as her element is loyalty.
Pinkie Pie- There is no other pony that’s as sweet-obsessed, bubbly, and full of
excitement as Pinkie Pie! Known for being a party animal, she loves to throw parties and always loves
seeing her friends smile.
She enjoys writing her own music and singing for her friends. Her element of course is laughter!
RarityRarity- Last, but certainly not least, is the very talented fashionista, Rarity.
She’s a fashion designer with her own shop, Carousel Boutique. She can be dramatic and lazy at times,
but she loves to help her friends and give them presents, which represents her element, generosity.
In many of the episodes, there are also memorable villains. Anyone from harmless braggarts like Trixie,
to a Changeling named Chrysalis, who tries to take over all of Equestria and throw everyone into dictatorship where she is the only leader! If you do anything after reading this, I hope you watch a few episodes and see how good this series is. And anyone that honestly ignores this article because they
thought they’re too old to watch it— you don’t know what you’re missing.
