with how we conduct ourselves in
our community of faith. He urges

to serve them by looking out for
their best interest, not ours.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Ez 18:25-28; Ps 25: 4-5, 8-9, 10, 14; Phil 2:1-11 or 2:1-5; Mt 21:28-32
In the Gospel Jesus […] recounts the parable of the two sons invited by their
father to work in the vineyard. The first son responded: “‘I will not go’, but
afterward he repented and went.” The other son said to the father: “‘I go, sir,’
but did not go.” When asked by Jesus which of the two sons did the father’s
will, those listening rightly respond: “the first” (Mt 21:29-31). The message
of the parable is clear: it is not words that matter, but deeds, deeds of
conversion and faith.
The Gospel for this Sunday, as we saw, speaks of two sons, but behind them,
in a mysterious way, is a third son. The first son says “no,” but does the
father’s will. The second son says “yes,” but does not do what he was asked.
The third son both says “yes” and does what he was asked. This third son is
the Only-begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ, who has gathered us all here.
Jesus, on entering the world, said: “Lo, I have come to do thy will, O God”
(Heb 10:7). He not only said “yes”, he acted on that “yes”, and he suffered it,
even to death on the Cross. As the Christological hymn in the second reading
says: “Though he was in the form of God, [Jesus] did not count equality with
God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant,
being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he
humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a Cross”
(Phil. 2: 6-8). In humility and obedience, Jesus fulfilled the will of the Father
and by dying on the Cross for his brothers and sisters, for us, he saved us
from our pride and obstinacy. Let us thank him for his sacrifice, let us bend
our knees before his name and proclaim together with the disciples of the first
generation: “Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:11).

Jesús el Evangelio […] narra la parábola de los dos hijos enviados por el padre a
trabajar en la viña. El primer hijo responde: “«No quiero». Pero después se
arrepintió y fue” (Mt 21, 29). El otro, sin embargo, dijo al padre: “«Voy, señor».
Pero no fue” (Mt 21, 30). A la pregunta de Jesús sobre quién de los dos ha hecho la
voluntad del padre, los que le escuchaban responden justamente: “El primero” (Mt
21, 31). El mensaje de la parábola está claro: no cuentan las palabras, sino las
obras, los hechos de conversión y de fe.
En el Evangelio de este domingo – lo hemos oído – se habla de dos hijos, pero tras
los cuales hay misteriosamente un tercero. El primer hijo dice no, pero después
hace lo que se le ordena. El segundo dice sí, pero no cumple la voluntad del padre.
El tercero dice “sí” y hace lo que se le ordena. Este tercer hijo es el Hijo unigénito
de Dios, Jesucristo, que nos ha reunido a todos aquí. Jesús, entrando en el mundo,
dijo: “He aquí que vengo... para hacer, ¡oh Dios!, tu voluntad” (Hb 10, 7). Este
“sí”, no solamente lo pronunció, sino que también lo cumplió y lo sufrió hasta en la
muerte. En el himno cristológico de la segunda lectura se dice: “El cual, siendo de
condición divina, no retuvo ávidamente el ser igual a Dios; al contrario, se despojó
de sí mismo tomando la condición de esclavo, hecho semejante a los hombres. Y
así, reconocido como hombre por su presencia, se humilló a sí mismo, hecho
obediente hasta la muerte y una muerte de cruz” (Flp 2, 6-8). Jesús ha cumplido la
voluntad del Padre en humildad y obediencia, ha muerto en la cruz por sus
hermanos y hermanas – por nosotros – y nos ha redimido de nuestra soberbia y
obstinación. Démosle gracias por su sacrificio, doblemos las rodillas ante su
Nombre y proclamemos junto con los discípulos de la primera generación:
“Jesucristo es Señor, para gloria de Dios Padre” (Flp 2, 10).
