STEWARDSHIP REPORT
ELEVEN YEARS OF
INSPIRATION AND STRENGTH
2004- 2015
Thanks to more than a little help from our friends
- and lots of dedication and hard work - we
can continue to honor our son, Michael, and
champion a noble cause. During these past
eleven years, the Michael Magro Foundation has
created and implemented a king’s ransom in
innovative programs and services to embrace
our most vulnerable populations. We have
raised more than a million dollars in an effort to
mitigate the challenges children with cancer
confront every day. This is truly a night to celebrate!
THE BEST OF THE MICHAEL MAGRO FOUNDATION
Our Legendary Programs Continue to Flourish and Grow!
• SOAR (School re-entry & Ongoing Academic Resources), the Foundation’s flagship
program, continues its counseling and support for children with chronic illnesses
who are returning to school, during or post-treatment.
• Ongoing support for Child Life Initiatives throughout the Hospital and in off-campus
settings.

• Providing essentials like petty cash for meals, school supplies, supermarket gift
cards, pharmacy co-pays, funds for transportation to and from chemotherapy,
Life Essentials has dramatically impacted on pediatric cancer patients and their
families. The Foundation also distributes an estimated $2,500 a month in gift cards
to those in need. Efforts at the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK), the Children’s
Medical Center at Winthrop, and especially at Winthrop’s Hempstead Clinic,
have enhanced the lives of the working poor throughout Long Island. Cards are
also donated to Stony brook Hospital’s Pediatric Oncology.
• Ongoing support for Child Life Initiatives throughout the Hospital and in off-campus
settings.

• Culinary Scholarships - The Foundation has a scholarship program available to
students enrolled in culinary arts programs on the second or post-secondary
school level. Graduating seniors from Hicksville High School who go on to college,
have played Lacrosse and are involved in the Fine Arts Department have been
receiving $500 scholarships on an ongoing basis from the Foundation. Thousands
of dollars have been awarded. Two recipients are chosen each school year.

• The Foundation continues to contribute multiple copies of The
Parent Guide Book which outlines a basic understanding of a child’s cancer
diagnosis and helps the family stay on track as it navigates the healthcare
system’s stormy seas.
• Our “Little Wishes” program enjoys playing fairy godmother, making patient wishes
for a day with the Mets or a seat on the aisle at “The Lion King” come true.

• A pharmaceutical program established with Franwin Pharmacy to help families
defray medical costs.
• Project Give Back, a partnership with Priority Payment Systems, brings 30% of the
revenue stream from gifts and events back to the Foundation to support its mission.
• Project REACH: for children with chronic long term illnesses. Program is still in the
developmental stages. As it evolves binders will be written by clinical staff at WPA.
Hospital Grants for Educational Tools and Equipment
Since its inception, the Foundation has been at the vanguard of philanthropy
on Long Island. Advanced equipment is a critical component of precise
diagnosis and effective care; in addition to underwriting programs and
services, we have dedicated ourselves to enhancing medical treatment,
comfort and care.
The Children’s Medical Center at
Winthrop-University Hospital
• The Lx500 microscope presented to the Children’s Kidney & Bladder Program at
Winthrop, combining world-class technology and design innovation, and allowing
preservation of unique findings for patient charts and research publications.
• Five CHRISTIE Vein Finders to the Cancer Center for Kids, the Neonatal ICU,
Pediatric ED, and the Pediatric Floor.

opening a window to the heart for pediatric patients from newborns to young
adults.
• An adaptive chair for the Cancer Center for Kids CBC lab.

their high-risk neonates home.
Introducing, Our Exciting New Program,
Foundation Contributors
It takes a lot of courage and heart – and more than a village—to bring comfort and
joy to hundreds of pediatric cancer patients and their families. The Foundation’s
success is intertwined with the friendship and philanthropy of the following individuals, businesses, and corporations. Their in-kind gifts and pro-bono donations are the
wind beneath our wings, and we are very grateful.

Our vision is partially supported by Thomas Galati’s team at Linked In. We started
our donation process for this program with our end of the year campaign in which
LinkedIn raised close to $5,000.00 to start the program. Child Life Specialists and
volunteers work in conjunction with the nursing and clinically staff to develop the
policies of the program and track the outcomes.

Nurses have found that even minimal involvement like
this can dramatically impact on families, especially
children, enabling them to feel connected to a new
brother or sister during a very stressful time. While the immediate benefit is for the
more than 700 NICU patients Winthrop serves annually, the MMF’s long-term vision is
to expand Bonding with Baby to other hospitals on a national and a global level.
Foundation Events
Over the past decade, the Michael Magro Foundation has created, developed
and produced the following fabulous events, which have raised a million dollars to
support its mission on behalf of pediatric cancer patients and their families.
DS
The Michael Magro Foundation has pioneered an
innovative new program at Winthrop-University Hospital’s
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) so that siblings of
neonates can communicate with them in a safe, sterile
environment. The MMF has created a “Face-Time”
scenario wherein brothers and sisters can talk, sing, and
bond with their newest family member whose medical
problems range from premature birth to breathing
disorders, infections and other medical conditions that
require isolation.

2015 Event Retrospective
This Year’s Fundraising Schedule Brought New Friends, Fun, and “Fabulousness” to the Michael Magro Foundation!
Thank You for your Enduring Support!
A FLAIR FOR FASHION
We kicked off the 2015 season with our star-studded Fashion Show in the
Atrium of the Jewel Restaurant with models, raffle prizes and cocktails on
the menu. Lisa Dimond choreographed the event from start to finish! Gem
Entertainment kept the event moving.
Ensembles by Estelle’s Dresses and Mixology brought rave reviews from the
crowd of fashionistas. Cue the paparazzi!
MUSTANG MUSCLE
The Foundation created a different kind of runway at the June Car Wash/
Car Show at Barry Tech. Thanks to Thomas Galati and the Mustang Club,
there were lots more classic cars, hot rods, and kid-friendly arts and crafts
activities than in previous years. Food and fun equaled $2,600 raised
for the MMF.

GOLF OUTING SCORES A ‘HOLE-IN-ONE’
The beautiful Hamlet Golf & Country Club in Commack was the site for
the Third Annual Michael Magro Foundation Golf Outing on 6/29/15 when
close to 100 golfers hit the fairway for a great round of golf and 19th hole
festivities. The event raised more than $35,000 to benefit pediatric cancer
centers like Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids and Stony Brook’s Pediatric
Oncology Program.
Thank you to our committee for making this day very special! Fairway
Sponsors designed and Produced our T-Signs and Golf Cart Signs which
added a lot of color and pride from our sponsors on the course.
Our evening cocktail hour started out magically with Master Magician Dov
Feder preforming tableside! His donation for the evening added another
dimension to an already awesome event.
Winthrop golfers Dr. Warren Rosenfeld, Gloria Petralia, Nicole Almeida and
Ed Chewens enjoy a beautiful day on the fairway.

SOCCER FOR A CAUSE
Eighteen Long Island soccer teams — from points north and south —
jousted on the field at Kevin Kolm Memorial Field to benefit the MMF
and reconnect with old friends.
Though Mastermind Unit and tournament founders Michael
Stamatinos and Brian Horvath no longer live in the area, they travel to
New York each year to orchestrate the event.
“Coming back home and making this happen is something I’m
proud of. Donating our time and talent to such a special cause sets
a standard and paves the way for others to follow,” said Stamatinos.
Thank you to all MMU leaders.
