Volume 5, Issue 3 - Lowe Family Young Scholars
Quarterly Newsletter May 2011 Volume 5 Issue 3 Quarterly Meeting - April 9, 2011 April 9, 2011 - The RSU cam- pus was the setting for the spring LFYS quarterly meeting. Karen Lowe led the teambuilding activity. We held discussions in small groups so that we could get to know one another better. One of the questions asked helps you understand a person’s values: “What is the one thing you would take with you if your house was on fire?” Dallas Lewis, junior at Oklahoma Wesleyan University and a LFYS mentoring program alumni, updated us on his college experience. It’s been exciting to see Dallas’ personal growth while at Oklahoma Wesleyan. He is an excellent student and quite an accomplished speaker with a thought-provoking message. Bobbe Hornback, of Big Brothers Big Sisters, attended a Family Life Symposium in February led by Dr. Alan Beane, a former classroom teacher and internationally recognized speaker and author on bullying. The information from this session was shared Inside this issue: OSU Pickens Legacy 2 New OSU student 2 Volunteer Update 3 Next Volunteer Activity 4 Next Quarterly Meeting 4 with the Lowe Family Young Scholars Program by Bobbe. She led a session on bullying. She shared the various types of bullying. Additionally, students acted out a skit involving how they would handle bullying personally, how to handle as a friend of someone being bullied, and how to handle as a friend of the bully. Bobbe shared important information such as how to stand when speaking to the bully, to not become emotionally involved, and how to best diffuse the situation. Thanks to Sujatha Krishnan for sharing with us about the interest-free loan/scholarship, B.L.E.S.S Fund, set up by her father, K. Vasudeven. Students may receive a maximum of $1,500 per year applied to their university of choice to offset expenses.
