Knight Report Summer 2011 - Peninsula Catholic High School
For Alumni, Parents & Friends of Peninsula Catholic
Summer 2011
THANK YOU, DR. GAGNE
A
fter seven years of ministry, Dr. Francine Gagne left Peninsula Catholic High School
at the end of June. She accepted the position of Principal at Christ the King School
in Norfolk, her home town.
Dr. Gagne arrived at PC in the midst of the second phase of building construction and made
sure that all was successfully completed with little or no problems that impacted school life.
Through her vision and direction, technology grew immensely and became part of
everyday life at PC. As the number of international students increased, Dr. Gagne saw a
need for an ESL program to help these students become acclimated to our culture. She
initiated the ESL program and taught the class herself.
Working closely with the School Advisory Board, Dr. Gagne worked to position the school
for its next phase of development through the acquisition of property behind the school.
The PC Community will always be grateful to Dr. Gagne for her leadership and
dedication. The students, faculty, and staff would like to say thank you for all you have done
and for the vision you brought to life which will allow PC to thrive in the next 100 years.

— JEAN BAPTISTE MASSIEU
Dear PC Families, Alumni, and Friends:
As I write my last letter for the Knight Report, many faces and memories
flash before me. In my seven short years, I have encountered many
wonderful students, parents, faculty, and staff. PC has become a stronger
Catholic school and is positioned to continue moving forward.
I extend my gratitude to all who have supported our efforts over the
years. PC is a great environment for students to grow in spirit, mind,
heart, and body through their high school years. Your donation is an
investment in the future of our youth and the future of PC.
Over the course of this academic year, PC took a major step forward to
complete the school’s master plan. We were able to purchase the land
behind the school which many may know for the trails used by our cross
country teams. The additional land will provide the space needed to
improve and expand the outdoor athletic facilities. The administration
and Advisory Board will continue to work toward the goal of athletic
facilities and auditorium as plans are completed and funds are available.
One of the greatest blessings this year was to receive the final allocations of
the Billie D. Gordon Estate. Mrs. Gordon was incredibly generous, not only
to PC, but also to several other Catholic institutions as well as to the
American Theatre. Her gift has allowed us to purchase the property behind
the school, establish the Gordon-Kearney Endowment for financial aid, and
to make major upgrades to the HVAC system for greater energy efficiency
and future savings. Mrs. Gordon was a generous benefactor to PC in her
lifetime and in her passing – and we pray that she continue to look after the
PC community as we strive to be good stewards of her generous gift.

Dear PC Family,
Our theme this year focused on the potter and clay image from Isaiah, “We are the clay, You are the potter, We are all the work of
Your hands.” And now that the graduation celebrations have ended, the classrooms are empty and the halls are quiet (for the first
time since last August!) there is time to take a breath and truly reflect on the ways the PC family, only through the grace of God,
was able to mold and shape these fabulous young people this year.
Academically, what a year! We are so proud that two of our students, Jessica Blusiewicz and James Shanley, were named finalists in the National Merit
Scholarship Program. That means that both made it to the final 15,000 out of 1.5 million students whose PSAT scores qualified them for distinction. Their score
ranks them in the top 1% of high school seniors across the nation. What an accomplishment! Additionally, Kristin Mlynczak was honored as a Commended
Student. The PSAT scores for the Class of 2011 were also impressive, averaging even higher than the Class of 2010 (Math 554; Critical Reading, 574; Writing,
550)! The average GPA of these 61 students was 3.2—Way to go Class of 2011! The classes of ’12-’15 had great years academically as well, thanks to the
partnership of parents and teachers who all want the same goal: true learning.
Athletically, some of our teams made great strides! The excitement was palpable as our Boys’ Varsity Cross Country Team came home with a second State
Championship win! Both our girls’ varsity volleyball and boys’ varsity soccer made into the State Tournaments and did us proud as well! Other teams built up
their programs, celebrated their victories and consoled each other in their losses. Season after season, it was amazing to watch the kids develop their skills and,
most importantly, their sportsmanship.
Our fine arts program continues to flourish. For those who have walked the halls, I know you have enjoyed the artistic talents of our art students as their
masterpieces are displayed throughout the school by their teacher, Mrs. Kovalcik. Our band, under the direction of Mr. Kronstain, continues to “rock,“ earning
first place and the school’s first-ever “Superior Rating” at the Kings Dominion Band Festival, not to mention the ‘Grand Champion” this spring. The girls’ chorus
sang their way to an “Excellent Rating” and the highlight was certainly the trip to Baltimore to sing the National Anthem at Camden Yards! Not bad for a group
of girls who have only sung together since January! If you didn’t get to see any of the plays this year, you missed out! Mr. Smith, Director, did a beautiful job
keeping the program to the high standard previously seen when Mr. Cox was with us. We are so proud to be able to share the talents of these students through
these arts programs.
With over 20 active clubs and other activities, life stays busy for our students. Here’s a quick list: Beach Clean-up, Craft Sale, Hats Off Day, Light the Night,
Adopt-a-child in Haiti, Berlin Wall re-enactment, Jr.-Sr. Showdown, Dances, Forensics competitions, March for Life, Great computer Challenge, Quiz Bowl,
Homecoming and Spirit Week, Mardi Gras, German gingerbread houses, Prom, SCA Picnic…. Just to name a few! Tons of activities happen over the course of
a year, and we must give kudos not only to the students, but their moderators who help them in their successes for each and every event.
We are also proud of our many clubs who donate time and money to so many worthy causes. Our clubs and classes raised money and collected goods for those
in the community who needed it more than we did. This year alone, our students contributed to Hats Day for Cancer Research, American Red Cross, Salvation
Army, medicine for a medical mission to Haiti, Relay for Life, Operation Rice Bowl, SPCA, Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, Purple Pinky Project for polio vaccines,
Wounded Warriors, campus clean-up, tutoring, the St. Vincent toy drive, Jacob’s Ladder and many other groups.
In money and goods, our small school--through its classes and clubs, and lead by their officers--donated almost $10,000 this year. Their time spent volunteering
in their clubs as well as through the Christian Service Program has added up to a whopping 12,000 hours! They have truly learned how to lead and inspire--and
their efforts have had their effect within our local area and across the world.
The cornerstone of our school is our Catholic Identity and, in keeping with that, we are blessed to have the dedication of Mrs. Wilkinson, Mr. Gargaro, and Mrs.
Hinojosa, all of whom tirelessly create, support, and spend countless hours on class-wide service projects, Christian Service opportunities, prayer services and, of
course, retreats. And, it is our own faculty and staff who provide all the support needed in this very important work. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all of our
local priests who have spent time here at PC, either in the classroom, on retreats, at reconciliation or celebrating Mass with us. Thank you, Thank you! Without
these opportunities that allow our students to openly explore their relationship with God, PC would be just another private school.
Volunteers! I cannot close this short (kind of) end of year reflection without thanking all the parents and guardians who gave of their time at various activities
that support the mission of PC: Bingo, After-Prom, the auction, teacher luncheons, Baccalaureate and graduation receptions, concession stand, ticket taking,
“drama-mamas,” athletic competitions, Book Sale, etc., etc., etc. We simply couldn’t do it without you!
While time seemed to fly by, what a wonderful and fruitful year! As the summer days pass, all of us will prepare for what we hope and pray is another amazing
school year!

ANNUAL FUND DONORS
The Annual Fund is our primary way for parents, grandparents, alumni, family and friends to participate in
advancing the mission of Peninsula Catholic High School. Through unrestricted and restricted donations, it
supports the highest priorities of the school and provides the added edge to enable PCHS to continue to offer
quality 21st century education. Annual Fund revenue also helps to close the tuition gap, to increase opportunities
for student financial aid, and to enrich the student experience through academic and athletic enhancements.
We are grateful to the members of the Knights of the Roundtable Leadership Circle
for lighting the way with donations of $1,000 or more.

ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011
2010-2011 ENCHANTMENT OF THE SEA ANNUAL AUCTION
PC’s Enchantment of the Sea Auction was a HUGE success! Through the
combined efforts of parents, alumni, local businesses and many friends, we
raised $46,350 net, with $7,750 of that total going towards Fund-An-Item.
Money collected for Fund-An-Item will be used to purchase netbooks so that we
can have a “portable” classroom.
The “sold out” evening was filled with delicious food prepared by Jeanne
Simko, one of our current parents, hand painted wine glasses, each one uniquely
painted by Cynthia Keegan, another parent, and many wonderful items to bid on
in both the silent and live auction. We had over 35 volunteers who helped in
various ways the night of the event including serving dinner, tending bar,
running our silent auction, selling raffle tickets, organizing items, working at the
computers, and the list goes on and on… This number is small in comparison to
the number of parents and friends who volunteered in the weeks and months
prior to the auction. In particular, we are indebted to Gia Naab, our auction
chair, for her tireless efforts, in particular in the area of solicitation.

MUSIC AT PENINSULA CATHOLIC HS
St. Augustine of Hippo is often credited with saying, “Those
who sing, pray twice.” However, the actual Latin translation of
his phrase says“ Those who sing well, pray twice.” At Peninsula
Catholic High School, the later couldn’t be truer. Not only do
we sing well, we also play a mean
guitar, clarinet, saxophone, flute,
cello, violin, piano, oboe, and
drum set just as well.
To be a member of the PCHS
Concert Band requires a few
distinct traits: discipline, a
willingness to work with others,
a heightened level of
musicianship and performance
etiquette, an excellent practice
habit, and a bit of crazy. Crazy?
Yes, crazy. For the past 8 years,
the PCHS Band has met every
school day before any other PCHS student, or teacher, enters
the halls. The greatest testament of the PCHS Band has been
the willingness of the students and teachers to meet before
school to rehearse and study the biblical art of music. Their
determination has paid off. Over the few years since the
band’s inception, they have represented PCHS at competitions
in Myrtle Beach, SC, Hershey, PA, Williamsburg, VA, and
Richmond, VA winning numerous awards and garnishing
respectable performance ratings of Excellent (the second
highest musical rating on a six-tiered scale). Their greatest
success, however, came this past spring at a competition in
Richmond, VA. The band won First Place in the High School
division and garnished a Superior performance rating (the
highest musical rating on a six-tiered scale). Their scores
totaled high enough to earn the highest award of the evening,
Grand Champion. The PCHS Concert Band was the highest
scoring instrumental ensemble of the day and took home the
competitions most coveted award. All of their awards and
trophies can be viewed in the main office or in the trophy
space outside of the band room.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please stand, gentlemen remove
your hats, and join us in honoring America as the Peninsula
Catholic High School Women’s Choir leads us in their
rendition of our National Anthem.” With that statement, the
first ever PCHS Women’s Choir sang their heats out in front of
thousands of fans at Camden Yards for an evening match-up of
the New York Yankees versus the Baltimore Orioles. The PCHS
Choir was dressed to impress for their invited performance in
Baltimore this past May. Along with the band, they competed
in Richmond for their first festival level competition. But first,
a bit of a background of the group. Vocal talent at Peninsula
Catholic has been wide seen over the years. From the many
voices that have taken our humble Cafetorium stage to the
angelic voices that praise God and lift up our prayers in the
20 www.peninsulacatholic.com
glory of the Holy Mass, PC’s got
talent! The next logical
progression in the continuing
development of a deeper music
education for PC students was the
creation of a formal choir class.
This year’s inaugural class has set
high standards and a solid
foundation for those who follow in
the future. The PCHS Women’s
Choir took an ambitious program to competition and were
rewarded for their hard work. The choir earned an Excellent
performance rating, and received an 89 out of 100 points, 1
point below a Superior performance rating (the highest). The
girls were the only high school performing group of the day
and received praise via the judges critique and audience
response. Let it be known that PCHS music means business
and presents superior level performances at all times.
The PCHS Concert Band and choir will be visible at many
events in the coming year. All events will be posted on the
PCHS school website and announced well ahead of each
performance. Below is a list of currently scheduled opportunities
to see the wonderful music talent in the 2011-2012 school year:
Any school Mass
Lights of Faith Pasta Dinner
Boy’s and Girl’s Home Varsity Basketball Games
Celebration of the Arts (March)
Spring Musical (TBD)
Graduation of the Class of 2012
Other performances (TBD)
Music at PCHS is thriving due to the untiring efforts of our
wonderful administration, determined directors (both past and
present), wonderful parent support, and our incredibly talented
students. At a time in education when school divisions are cutting
back funding for the arts, firing arts teachers, and shifting focuses
away from the arts, it is comforting and reassuring to know that
the arts have a permanent and well protected home at Peninsula
Catholic High School. Please consider supporting the arts at PC as
we begin a new chapter with the creation of the first PCHS Visual
and Performing Arts Department and as we look to a bright future
in a new performing venue; our very own auditorium. To inquire
about ways in which to support music at PC, please contact Mr.
John Kronstain, Director of Music, or Mrs. Ana Mari Clem,
Development Director. We’ll see you at the show!

THEOLOGY CLASSES
Theology 9 Service Project
On May 25, Mrs. Eva Hinojosa’s Theology 9 class
participated in the “Adopt a Spot Highway Clean Up”
of the section of Harpersville Road adopted by PCHS.
This clean up was part of their class service project.
Theology 11 and 12 Field Trip
On Tuesday, May 17, the junior and senior theology
classes of Mrs. Hinojosa and Mr. Gargaro travelled to
the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond to view a
unique exhibit entitled: “A Blessing to One Another:
John Paul II and the Jewish People.”
Blessed Pope John Paul II, one of the most
influential world leaders of recent generations, used
his papacy to promote understanding, respect, and
dialogue among people of different cultures and faiths.
22 www.peninsulacatholic.com
This exhibit examines how the life experiences of
Blessed John Paul II inspired his commitment to
tolerance.
The exhibit title is drawn from John Paul’s appeal
on the fiftieth anniversary of the uprising of Jews in
the Warsaw Ghetto. On that occasion, the Pope said:
“As Christians and Jews, following the example of the
faith of Abraham, we are called to be a blessing to the
world. This is the common task awaiting us. It is,
therefore, necessary for us, Christians and Jews, to be a
blessing to one another.”
Students, teachers, and chaperones learned much
from this exhibit which has appeared in Washington,
New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and
Houston, among other cities. It was created through
the collaboration of Xavier University (Cincinnati),
Hillel Jewish Student Center (Cincinnati, and the
Shtetl Foundation.
