JAW DROPPERS Have you ever had one of those moments when you encountered something so unbelievable that it left you utterly speechless? Perhaps it was an unexpected plot twist in a movie. Or the first time you saw the Grand Canyon. Or finding out just how expensive that weekend stay in the hospital was. But how would you react to seeing the impossible? Wouldn’t your mouth hit the floor if you saw someone walking on water, healing the sick or... rising from the dead? Jaw Droppers Sometimes there just aren’t words... OUR MISSION Inviting all people into a living relationship with Jesus Christ. Talbot Davis / February 28, 2016 Mark 9:2-13 The Transfiguration (2) After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. (3) His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. (4) And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. (5) Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (6) (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) (7) Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” (8) Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. (9) As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. (10) They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant. (11) And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?” (12) Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? (13) But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.” For Further Conversation: 1. What early memories do you have of the story of The Transfiguration? Did it figure prominently into the teaching you received about Jesus either at home or in church? 2. What would the disciples have seen if it had been Moses or Elijah who turned inside out instead of Jesus? What would your LifeGroup see if you were turned inside out? 3. In your own words, what is the role of Moses and Elijah in the story? How do those roles contribute to the story’s meaning? 4. Describe a time when you’ve been on a summit with Jesus. What did he say? How did he say it? What does he want you to do as a result of that time of intimacy with him? Is your experience at all like Peter’s in Mark 9? 5. What lessons does The Transfiguration story teach us about Jesus and his relation to other religions? 6. How would you explain Jesus’ uniqueness to a follower of Islam? Hinduism? To a religious skeptic? ______________ DOESN’T ___________ DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS Monday: Matthew 16:13 –17:13 Tuesday: Hebrews 1:1-4; Colossians 1:15-20 Wednesday: John 1:1-18; Genesis 1 Thursday: John 12:8-30 Friday: I Timothy 6 Notes: 7.
