A Father Makes a
Serious Commitment
to Heart Valve Research
A Meeting
of the Mınds
The Major Catalyst
Kevin and Masha Keating’s son, Nathaniel, was born with
a congenital heart defect. When he was only 2 months old, he
underwent a procedure to repair his aortic valve. Today, Nathaniel
is an active, healthy 5-year-old who likes to build intricate LEGO®
structures and play with his two brothers.
Like any parent, Kevin experienced the intense fear and anguish
that come with knowing your child’s health is compromised. But the
young and gifted former attorney decided to deal with it his own
way. He began a journey of scientific discovery; he immersed
himself in cardiac research; he read countless articles and academic
papers; he kept watch on scientific advancements.
That work led him to Alfredo Trento, MD, a veteran surgeon who
came to Cedars-Sinai from the University of Pittsburgh School of
Medicine in 1988 to spearhead the Heart Transplantation and
Pediatric Cardiac Surgery programs, and now heads the Division of
Cardiothoracic Surgery. His advancements in the science of heart
transplantation, valve repair, and robotic surgery, his masterful skill
in the operating room, and the compassionate and dedicated care
he gives to all his patients are known worldwide. Focused on the
potential of new valve replacement procedures, gene therapy, and
stem cells, his research seeks to improve patients’ quality of life by
eliminating organ rejection and the need for additional surgery.
Kevin Keating had found the man and the team he wanted to
support, whose research could one day make valve surgery less
invasive and replacement valves longer-lasting. Catalyst offered
Kevin the opportunity to take the lead again—this time as an
interviewer—and to ask Dr. Trento about valves, his research into
new surgical technologies ... and umbrellas.
KK | You are a very accomplished surgeon who is also
focusing on research. This seems like a rare combination.
How did you end up doing both?
AT | Well, you know, my research really
originates from my clinical experience: what I
see when I take care of my patients. Sometimes
we aren’t satisfied with the results that we get
with the present technology and the present
devices. We start asking ourselves ‘Why, and
how can we make them better?’ Right now the
biggest part of our practice here is repair or
replacement of defective heart valves.
KK | As opposed to coronary bypass surgery and the like?
AT | Exactly. Today we do more valve surgery
than coronary artery bypasses. The technology
for management of coronary artery disease, or
blocked arteries, has reached a point where
surgery is not the first line of treatment. We use
stents infused with medications. I would say that
here at Cedars-Sinai, about 70 to 80 percent of the
patients that need to have treatment for a blocked
artery don’t go through surgery anymore.
KK | Right now the gold standard in valve surgery is the
open heart procedure, but I see that you are starting to use
more minimally invasive procedures. Could these eventually
replace open surgery?
AT | Potentially, yes. There are new technologies
in development. We typically use surgery to
repair or replace heart valves. We are using a
new procedure to repair mitral valve defects
such as regurgitation, or leaking, that is much
less invasive than surgery. It allows us to insert
a clip in the valve via a catheter from the groin,
and repair the leakage. This technique is still
new and under investigation, but it has a
promising future. For aortic valve replacement
in children and young adults, we use another
method called the Ross procedure: We replace
the defective aortic valve with the patient’s own
pulmonary valve. There’s no risk of rejection,
no need for anticoagulation drugs like
Coumadin®, and the new valve lasts a very long
time. We have used the Ross procedure with
more than 150 patients in the past 16 years
with very good results.
KK | Why is there a difference between valve repair
procedures for mitral or aortic valves? Is it because the
mitral valve is under less pressure?
AT | No, they sustain the same pressure. But the
leakage of the mitral valve is more likely amenable
to repair than the aortic valve. With the aortic
valve, we see two main pathologies: the valve
may be too narrow, or it’s leaking. Sometimes we
can repair a leaky valve, and we have fairly good
results in specific situations. But I would say that
the great majority of the patients requiring aortic
valve surgery will require a new valve.
KK | What kind of issues do you encounter with artificial valves?
AT | Generally, when we use a mechanical
valve, a completely man-made valve, the
patients have to take a blood thinner for the
rest of their lives. In addition, these mechanical
valves aren’t going to last the rest of the
patient’s life. Many patients need another valve
after 20 or 30 years. The valves that come either
from a cow or from a pig are slowly rejected.
This limits the durability of the valve. In an
older patient, the valve will last longer than the
same valve in a younger patient because the
older patient’s metabolism is a little slower, and
the immune system is a little less active. In a
young adult, they will last 10 years; in a
teenager, it will last even less than 10 years.
Kevin Keating and
Dr. Alfredo Trento
hold research close
to the heart
KK | Could you some day create a valve that is man-made,
but strong and lasts longer?
AT | It’s quite complex to create a valve which
is biologically very close to the human valve.
It’s not only the surface of the valve we need
to create, it’s also the structure. It cannot be
artificial. And if it comes from another human,
you have to eliminate all risks of rejection. One
way to do that is to eliminate all the cells and
keep just the frame and then repopulate it with
the patient’s own cells.
KK | That’s where Dr. Marbán’s work on heart stem cells*
comes in, right?
AT | Exactly. You know, it’s absolutely magic
how this structure, the human heart valve,
works. It is very weak-looking and delicate,
but it can withstand such a high pressure …
it’s quite amazing. So, to think that we can
reconstruct this in a permanent way—it’s quite
a major task. We could use heart stem cells,
these are the patient’s own cells! If it works, the
valve could work forever, and there is no issue
of rejection. Now, how long is it going take to
do this, and is your son going to benefit from
this research? It’s hard to tell. But the
technology we have today is good.
KK | Let’s say a valve lasts 20 years or 25 years—is it a
more complex procedure to put a new valve in place? Is it
more challenging to do a second operation?

AT | Yes, every second operation is more difficult
than a first operation. There is in general an
increased risk of damaging cardiac structures when
you reopen, because you have to find your way in,
millimeter by millimeter. But second operations are
very common and performed daily at Cedars-Sinai.
also do a new procedure called transapical valve
replacement. We go through the tip of the heart,
through the apex of the ventricle, because in older
patients the arteries through which to pass the
catheter aren’t flexible enough. These catheters
are big because the valve inside is still big.
KK | And with percutaneous valve replacement you would
sidestep that issue?
KK | This is amazing. So where is the technology heading?
AT | Exactly. What we have been doing for the
incredibly promising technology because it
avoids surgery completely. You are still requiring
anesthesia, but you wake up and basically you
can go home the next day. The issue is still: ‘How
long is this valve going to last?’ I think that the
research into valve material, into how to create a
valve that resembles the patient’s valve as closely
as possible is still extremely important.
past several years for patients who are too young
or too old for valve replacement surgery, is to put
an inflatable balloon at the tip of a catheter, guide
the catheter inside their valve, and then inflate
the balloon and stretch the valve open. Then we
thought: ‘Why don’t we build a valve that can be
squeezed down into a small cylinder?’ We can put
it in the tip of a catheter, and then we can insert
it from the artery in the groin and when we are
inside the old valve, we deploy the new valve.
KK | Like an umbrella.
AT | Like opening up an umbrella, exactly! That’s a
great concept, and it has been performed now on
several thousand patients. In Europe, the procedure
is widely used; in the U.S. it is still under investigation.
KK | Are there studies at Cedars-Sinai for that procedure?
AT | I think we are the biggest center for this
trial. We have done over 100 cases for this study
protocol. It’s a study done in a cooperative
fashion between surgeons and cardiologists. We

Catalyst | Kevin, you are obviously very curious and
knowledgeable about this research. What made you think:
‘This is the work I want to support, right here, this group of
people’—not Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, or some
other institution?
KK | Well, it’s two things. One is that my family has
had the good fortune to be treated at Cedars-Sinai.
My children were born here and I have good
associations with that. Beyond that, the hospital
has a great academic, research, and clinical
reputation. I also was interested in my own son’s
case, the possibility that one day his aortic valve
could be replaced with a new, permanent one.
That’s the dream. Dr. Trento has a great
combination of abilities as a clinician—obviously
caring about the patients—paired with being able
to interface with the public. He’s the type of
person who can talk with funders and instill
confidence. That’s terrific. He also has good
managerial skills in that he’s able to pick the right
research associates. I see him as a great CEO, but
he’s actually doing the work, and he’s also able
to really get other people working with him.
AT | The funding we receive from Kevin’s family
foundation allows us to create an infrastructure.
It’s expensive to do research. We need to get to
the point where we are going to be able to ask
for multimillion dollar grants from the federal
government or from other agencies that have
these funds. This is important support, because
it’s seed money. Ten years from now, we will have
a research structure that really has benefited from
Kevin’s support and has brought up good results.
KK | We want to get things as quickly as possible
through the next phase of clinical trials and make
it more widely available to patients. It seems to me
that research is really going somewhere fast, and
that’s very fulfilling. Dr. Trento has been doing this
for 30 years. He’s got two researchers who are
dedicated to this—they came all the way from Italy
to study under him, so there’s an affinity there. I see
that they’re always pushing the envelope, pushing
forward, and 10 years from now that effort will bring
rewards. I do feel comfortable that I’ve made the
right decision and I’ve made a good investment. ■

arch… Knees up… Higher!” Aleli Neal shouts over the upbeat
dance music. Neal, a remarkably fit grandmother, leads a group
of about 20 women in exercise, working as hard as the much
younger women who follow her every move. It’s 8 a.m. and the one-hour
exercise session is in the most unexpected of locations: a classroom at
St. Paul Catholic Church in Los Angeles’ Mid-City.
Aleli and the women in her class all know each other: a few months
ago they all attended a free, 10-week workshop led by Cedars-Sinai at
Arlington Heights Elementary School. Neal has a grandson at Arlington
Heights, but most of the workshop participants were parents. The
workshop, Healthy Habits for Families, offered hands-on lessons and
educational activities that engaged parents—and their kids—in learning
about healthy eating and exercise.
Throughout the school year, Cedars-Sinai brings Healthy Habits outreach
programs to eight elementary schools in low-income Mid-City Los Angeles
neighborhoods, with lessons focused on healthy eating and physical activity.
Claudia Gutierrez, the Cedars-Sinai community health liaison who led
the workshop in Arlington Heights, encouraged participants last spring to
arrive a half-hour early to exercise together. They walked laps around the
playground, and when the workshop ended in May, they decided to
continue on their own over the summer.
“We encourage parents to exercise together and to make healthy meal,
snack, and beverage choices for themselves and their families because it
has a lasting impact,” explains Cindy Levey, MPH, associate director of
Community Health Initiatives at Cedars-Sinai. “It not only lowers the risks
of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, but it also affects the
choices children make around exercise and eating as they grow up. This
program builds parents’ capacity to be role models for healthy habits. This
is a very powerful tool in reducing childhood obesity.”
Cedars-Sinai partners with community-based organizations each year to
offer over 5,800 community activities such as Healthy Habits for Families.
The other programs include free or low-cost care for the needy, screenings
for a variety of medical conditions, health lectures, exercise classes, support
groups, and flu-shot clinics.
Putting Out the Fire
C
edars-Sinai is moving to a completely smoke-free
environment by July 2010.
The transition to a smoke-free campus began in January, with
the elimination of smoking on the North Tower Plaza Level. Starting in
July, the entire campus became smoke-free. The smoking ban applies
to any buildings owned or completely occupied by the Medical
Center and applies to passengers inside their vehicles on campus.
“Initially, physicians can offer nicotine replacement therapies,
such as gum and patches, to patients who smoke to minimize
withdrawal symptoms,” says Itai Danovitch, MD, director of
Addiction Psychiatry Services and associate director of the
Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program in the Department of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences.
California, along with 26 other states, enacted statewide bans
on smoking in all enclosed public places in
May of this year. Cedars-Sinai seized the
opportunity to further protect its patients
and employees from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Currently, physician training opportunities and
drug protocols to help patients and employees kick
their smoking habit are in the planning process.
“We will be holding training targeted for
busy physicians to introduce simple
smoking-cessation interventions for patients
who want to quit,” Dr. Danovitch says.
“We are also going
to provide nicotine
replacement protocols
so physicians know

“It’s exciting to see how motivated the parents are—and to see that
they are feeling better as they exercise more,” says Gutierrez, who
made arrangements for the group to exercise on weekday mornings at
St. Paul’s once school closed for the summer. Gutierrez also continued
to support their efforts, providing T-shirts and exercise mats from
Cedars-Sinai and occasionally offering instruction on topics such as how
to cook healthy meals.
“I have more energy now,” says Julia Ayala, whose children, ages 2
and 6, watched her exercise and sometimes joined in. She finds it difficult
to exercise regularly on her own. “It’s a lot more exciting with more
people,” she says.
Aleli Neal has the women working every muscle group over the course
of an hour, keeping their interest by integrating dance moves into the
calisthenics. At the end of the session, the women gather in a huddle and
reach toward the center to touch hands. Neal offers parting words
encouraging them to keep exercising every day. “We’re going to be
healthy,” she says. “We’re going to be beautiful.”

Bypassing the Competition:
Worth the Heart Battle
Worth magazine has selected Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute as one
of the top 25 in the U.S. for cardiac bypass surgery.
Cedars-Sinai is one of only three hospitals on the West Coast
included on the list, which appeared in the December/January
issue. Worth chose the top centers based on factors including
outcome measures and quality rankings.
“Our entire team in bypass surgery, led by Dr. Alfredo Trento,
is honored to be recognized for providing our patients with the
highest quality care,” says Eduardo Marbán, MD, PhD, director
of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. “We strive to give our
patients the best available treatments today while developing
the leading-edge treatments of tomorrow.”
In addition to the ranking, the magazine highlighted Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute’s
groundbreaking cardiac stem cell clinical trial, directed by Dr. Marbán. The trial aims to
revolutionize treatment of heart failure with a patient’s own stem cells.
The Heart Institute’s leading teams, investigators, physicians, nurses, and clinicians are
dedicated to staying at the top of the list and at the forefront of cardiac research and treatments.
“Since I’ve been in practice here, I’ve
developed real relationships with my
patients. I hear their stories—it’s
interesting to me to know what they’re
doing and see how I can help them do their
job better ... by helping them stay healthy.”

Profile | Saul and Joyce Brandman
When a couple shares a belief in giving back,
together they can impact countless lives—
for generations to come.
BY CANDACE PEARSON
Making Room for One More
G
rowing up in the immigrant neighborhood of Boyle Heights in
1930s Los Angeles, Saul Brandman learned the importance of
helping others. Even when times are hard, his mother taught him,
“there’s always room for one more at the table.”
Many years later, around their own dinner table, he and his wife, Joyce,
would talk late into the evening about the causes they wanted to support.
Their exchanges were often spirited. “He had his list of favorites, and I had
mine,” she recalls fondly. “I learned a great deal from my husband,” she adds.
“Most of all, I learned about giving.”
In 1973, Saul established the Saul Brandman Foundation to put into action
the principles his mother instilled in him. With his passing in 2008, Joyce
now oversees the charitable mission of the Joyce and Saul Brandman
Foundation, and its generous funding since 1998 of the institution closest to
the Brandmans’ hearts: Cedars-Sinai. “Saul believed in this Medical Center
and made it one of his priorities,” she says.
In 1999, as Joyce underwent treatment for breast cancer, she envisioned
what the ideal cancer facility would look like. Joyce had faced down cancer
once before: in her late 20s, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “It
changes you,” she notes quietly. “For me, that change was for the best.”
She imagined a place where women could receive comprehensive support
services and the latest treatments backed by research in a warm,
compassionate setting. Saul embraced that vision and helped make it a
reality with the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center—A Project of
Women’s Guild at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.
Joyce, who has been a dedicated volunteer at Cedars-Sinai, often counsels
women at the Medical Center who’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“I tell each new person I talk to, ‘You don’t have a single doctor. You have
an entire team taking care of you.’”
At the helm of that team is Edward H. Phillips, MD, director of the Saul and
Joyce Brandman Breast Center. “From the start, Joyce and Saul cared about
ensuring that our center was designed in a way that is sensitive to our patients’
needs,” he says. “Their involved philanthropy has been an inspiration.”
B
orn in Brooklyn in 1925, Saul attended Fairfax High and UCLA. After
serving in World War II, he returned to Los Angeles and made his
name in the garment industry, then entered finance and real estate.
The impact of the Brandmans’ philanthropy is evidenced throughout
Southern California and beyond. “Saul and Joyce Brandman exemplify the
kind of giving that extends to a deep-felt commitment to our mission
as a whole,” says Cedars-Sinai president and CEO Thomas M. Priselac. “We
are immensely grateful for their longstanding generosity.”
The Foundation supports more than 100 causes, primarily focused on
Jewish services, healthcare, scientific research, secondary education, and
youth and veterans programs. “Saul and Joyce have been critical partners in
ensuring our ability to better serve an aging population,” says Molly Forrest,
chief executive officer and president of the Los Angeles Jewish Home,
where the Foundation recently provided
start-up funding for the Brandman
Centers for Senior Care. “Their giving has
made a huge difference in helping more
seniors live independently.”

n the fall of 1976, MCA executive
Taft Schreiber, a dedicated family
man and avid art collector who
played an important role in Republican
politics, checked into a Los Angeles
hospital to undergo routine prostate
surgery.
A top talent agent who counted
Jack Benny, George Burns, Alfred
Hitchcock, and Ronald Reagan among
his clients, Taft received two blood
transfusions of mismatched blood. He
went into shock and died 10 days
later, just after his 68th birthday.
This harrowing experience
prompted his family to turn to
Cedars-Sinai to seek its help in
developing programs that would
ensure blood safety. “We wanted to do
something positive. It really started as
a simple question,” says his daughter
Lenore Greenberg. “How could
mismatched blood transfusion be
avoided? Human error is unfortunately part of
the problem—what can we do about it?”
Mismatched blood transfusions are rare but
very dangerous and have occurred at steady rates
over the past 35 years. While most cases today
result from undetected antibodies in the donor’s
blood, the kind of preventable error that killed
Taft Schreiber, sadly, still occurs.
A solution may be in the hands of Eleftherios
C.Vamvakas, MD, PhD, a world authority on
blood transfusion medicine who serves as
professor and vice-chair in clinical pathology at
Cedars-Sinai. A recent $2 million endowment gift
from Lenore and her husband, estate and trust
attorney Bernard Greenberg, established Dr.
Vamvakas as the Rita and Taft Schreiber Chair in
Transfusion Medicine.
For the chair donors, this endowment is the
culmination of more than three decades of
continued financial support of Cedars-Sinai.
Shortly after Taft died in 1976, his family made a
significant gift to establish what is now known as
the Rita and Taft Schreiber Blood Donor Facility,
a state-of-the-art center that collects about 25,000
units of blood, platelets, and plasma for CedarsSinai’s patients. The family also established an
annual lecture series that attracts the world’s
leading experts in blood transfusion medicine.
The Rita and Taft Schreiber Division of
Transfusion Medicine bears their names as well.

infections such as hepatitis and AIDS, which
together caused tens of thousands of deaths
before 1990. Now that screening procedures have
nearly eliminated these transfusion-transmitted
infections, researchers are concentrating on the
other causes of transfusion-related deaths,
including those caused by mismatched blood.
Dr. Vamvakas’ research focuses on quantifying
and ranking the various risks of blood transfusion,
“what we should or should not do now as
opposed to five years from now,” in order to guide
public policy on blood safety measures, he says.
“Because this is not basic-science research, it is
difficult to find funding for this kind of work,” Dr.
Vamvakas says. “What Mr. and Mrs. Greenberg did
is very special because they funded an endeavor
for which there are not many alternative sources
of support.”
Although Lenore is modest and reserved, she
acknowledges her father would be proud to
know what his family has done to improve
blood safety over the past 34 years. But, she
says, “He wouldn’t want any speeches. If he saw
something that needed to be done, he would
simply step forward and do it. It’s something he
instilled in us.”

My name | After I was born, my dad walked down
in lights | the hallway outside Labor and Delivery
| and noticed the Baby Tribute Gallery.
| Colorful tiles with names and
| birthdates covered the wall, celebrating
| babies like me born at Cedars-Sinai.
| Each tribute tile represents a gift made
| by a baby’s parents or family to the
| Department of Ob/Gyn. My parents had
| such a great experience at Cedars| Sinai, they decided to return the favor
| and help the hospital take good care of
| moms and babies yet to come. My
| name and birthday are permanently
| displayed on a vibrant, coral-colored
| tile on the wall.
My personality | As my mom often says, ‘She’s got
trait | sass!’ She says she saw it as soon as
| I was born.
My interests | When I’m not busy people-watching,
| I spend my downtime with books.
| My dad Rich loves to watch my
| learning process; I think I’m also
| teaching him a thing or two...
My guilty | Tags! I love the tags on clothing,
pleasure | stuffed animals, and toys. I can’t get
| enough! My parents even buy me
| special toys covered in baby-safe tags.
My inspiration | My mom and dad! They didn’t take
| my successful and positive debut for
| granted, they showed me that helping
| other families and babies who might
| not be as lucky as I was is important,
| too. They tell me that instead of
| making a gift to save lives, they made
| a gift to help create lives. And I’m not
| worried one bit about the competition.
My hospital | Cedars-Sinai
Cedars-Sinai requires that all patients scheduled to receive a
transfusion have their blood drawn and tested twice, to reduce
the possibility of mismatching. Yet, such procedures are
voluntary and by no means enforced by all blood banks. New
technology, such as scan readers that could prevent a transfusion
unless the donor blood unit and recipient’s wrist band contain
matching bar codes, could go a long way toward solving the
problem of mismatched blood, and will hopefully soon be
required by accrediting agencies, according to Dr. Vamvakas.

Pet visits bring precious moments of joy
to Cedars-Sinai patients. While lifting
spirits, well-trained dogs in the Medical
Center’s volunteer POOCH program can
also help reduce pain and anxiety and
lower blood pressure.
BY SHERRY ANGEL
Community Pulse
W
hile fighting for his life in the HIV/
AIDS unit at Cedars-Sinai, Andy
Martin felt cut off from the outside
world and found it difficult to focus on anything
but the pain that came with every movement. But
when a gentle golden retriever named Chase
walked into his room with owner Barbara
Berkowitz, the pain receded and Andy instantly
felt reconnected with life.
“Chase was real. He was sweet. He was giving.
He was like an angel to me,” Andy recalls.
Barbara and Chase are volunteers with the
hospital’s pet visitation program. POOCH (Pets
Offer Ongoing Care and Healing) was brought
to the HIV/AIDS unit in 1992 by Women’s Guild
as part of its support for the HIV/AIDS and
Immune Disorders Center at Cedars-Sinai.
After being launched in the HIV/AIDS unit, the
POOCH program gradually expanded to include
regular pet visits in medical surgical, cardiology,
and pediatrics, among other parts of the hospital.
The program now involves more than 40 welltrained pets and their owners. The dogs range
from tiny chihuahuas that can rest in patients’ laps
to those as large as Chase—nearly 120 pounds.
Dogs must have the right temperament—
calm, comfortable with strangers, and not easily
distracted—to be admitted to the POOCH
program. Chase was a natural. And he seemed to
form an instant connection with Andy, a strong
but gentle, soft-spoken man who is inspiring to
be around as he embraces life with openness
and gratitude.
Chase made a series of visits to Andy’s room
when Andy was hospitalized for a month in
2005. “He would jump halfway on the bed and
put his head on my arm, and I’d just relax. It was
like he’d set me free,” Andy says.
‘My Good Constant’
B
arbara Berkowitz, an entertainment lawyer
who has had Chase since he was “a big
ball of fur,” would stand back and watch
as Andy and Chase bonded. Then she’d move on
to the next patient. “He’s a lovely dog, kind and
sweet. Everyone wants to touch him. He has a
soothing presence that’s very healing,” she says.
POOCH program volunteer coordinator
Barbara Cowen says the dogs give joy to
everyone they encounter, lifting the spirits not
only of patients but also visitors and staff. For
patients, they bring a “piece of home” to the
hospital, she says. “It’s wonderful for patients to
have their unconditional love and affection.”
Barbara Leanse, Cedars-Sinai’s director of
Volunteer Services, adds, “These pooches have
the uncanny ability to help patients forget their
But against all odds, as he was preparing to
die, he suddenly started to improve. Eventually,
he told the hospice team it was time for them to
leave so he could prepare to live. Andy was so
weak that he was bedridden for two years and
had to learn to walk again. But he gradually
gained strength and began rebuilding his life.
At the end of 2009, he was walking with a
cane and preparing to take a driver’s test. And
then came an unexpected invitation from Barbara
Berkowitz—a chance to be reunited with Chase
at her home.
C
hase went through his own health crisis in
the fall of 2009, when he was diagnosed
with cancer. He responded well to treatment
and resumed his hospital visits after recuperating.
“Patients find him even more inspiring when they
hear about his experience as a patient,” Barbara says.
Chase had just completed his last radiation
treatment when the reunion took place. Andy, who
was to celebrate his 55th birthday the next day,
embraced his former hospital companion and, with
tears in his eyes, said, “It’s nice to see him looking
so good.” Barbara had the same reaction to seeing
Andy. And Chase, calm as ever, took it all in stride.
Andy recently reflected on how much that
reunion meant to him: “I couldn’t believe the
moment was happening. The way Chase wrapped
himself around me and hugged me reassured me
that he knew who I was. It was like meeting an
old friend. He was my hero; he helped me
through, and I have a feeling he sensed how far
I’ve come because I was standing in front of him
instead of lying in a hospital bed.”
Andy looks forward to the day when he will
be well enough to follow in Chase’s footsteps and
volunteer to offer support to AIDS patients, “I
know there are a lot of people in my situation
who don’t have anyone. It would be helpful if
they had someone to visit them. Chase was my
good constant. Everyone needs that.”

pain, reduce their anxiety levels, and lower
blood pressure.”
Sometimes the results of POOCH visits are
even more dramatic. For example, there are
stories of a stroke survivor starting to speak
again and another awakening after being in a
coma for several days. Both responded to the
quiet presence of a dog at the edge of the bed.
For Andy, the visits from Chase were an
affirmation of life at a time when it seemed the end
was near. When he left Cedars-Sinai in 2005, he
went to his mother’s North Hollywood apartment
for hospice care. Over the next six months, Andy put
his affairs in order and never imagined a time would
come when he would see his canine friend again.
Barbara Berkowitz, Chase, and Andy Martin
reunite at Barbara’s home in December 2009.

How do you say thank you?
Meet CHRIS ANGELO WORD. Around Cedars-Sinai, he’s
known as “the walker.” Diagnosed elsewhere with colon
cancer, he came to Cedars-Sinai seeking the best possible
care. He walked the hospital halls from one appointment to
the next. After surgery, he walked the halls again to speed
up his recovery. Now he’s walking the fairway—grateful for
the hope of a normal life, and inspired to support others
who are facing cancer.
