Willerson President of the Texas Heart Institute I n the last issue of Texas Heart Institute Update, I wrote about the great privilege and responsibility it is to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Denton A. Cooley. I also outlined our vision for THI in the future, including our plan: 1) to work with physicians, educators, scientists, patients, and supporters to enable THI at SLEH to make seminally important contributions in discovery, education, and treatment that relieve suffering and improve the health of the patients we see, and ultimately to prevent cardiovascular disease worldwide; 2) to strengthen collaborations in the Texas Medical Center, the State of Texas, (continued on page 4) Donor Highlight Houston Endowment Houston Endowment, which was established by Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones in 1937 to improve life for the people of the greater Houston area, has donated more than $1.4 billion ($2.5 billion in current dollars) to charitable organizations and educational institutions “to help fulfill their vision of a vibrant community where the opportunity to thrive is available to all.” The Texas Heart Institute (THI) was the grateful beneficiary of a $2 million grant in December 2008 to recruit scientists to enhance cardiology and adult, human stem cell research. We thank Mr. and Mrs. Jesse H. Jones for their vision and generosity, and we thank the fine people at Houston Endowment for their careful and thoughtful stewardship of the Jones’s legacy. In Memoriam Walter Cronkite T he Texas Heart Institute (THI)) joins the nation and the world in mourning the death of Walter Cronkite. His contributions to broadcast journalism are legendary. As reported on the CBS Evening News, “He broke the news of the Kennedy assassination, reported extensively on Vietnam and Civil Rights and Watergate, and seemed to be the very embodiment of TV journalism.” Mr. Cronkite had a special affinity with THI. In 1995, he became the third recipient of The Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award and he was a member of THI’s National Advisory Council. He will always be remembered with fondness and respect. Thanks to the interest and support of the people and organizations listed in this issue of Texas Heart Institute Update, we are expanding our efforts on a number of these fronts. For example, we have strengthened our programs in adult, human stem cell research, which offers hope to the almost six million Americans who have congestive heart failure, a progressive and eventually fatal form of cardiovascular disease that affects the pumping ability of the heart. Approximately half of these patients die within five years after receiving a diagnosis of severe heart failure. Volume 7 Issue 2 u p D at e www.texasheart.org Notable A Heart Information Center 1 . 8 0 0 . 2 9 2 . 2 2 2 1 Gifts lbert and Margaret Alkek Foundation pledged $1 million to establish the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation Project Heart Endowment to enable the ongoing updating and enhancement of lesson-plan content about the heart, healthy eating and active lifestyles for grades K through 6. Information about Project Heart can be found at www. texasheart.org. The John S. Dunn Research Foundation pledged $1 million to develop a total artificial heart (TAH) from 2 continuous-flow pumps. This TAH would be used to replace the natural hearts of patients who are dying of end-stage heart failure. THANKS Mr. and Mrs. William Clay Ford, who made a very handsome gift to the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital – The Denton A. Cooley Building, pledged (continued on back page) Facing the Future with the Strengths of Our Past Texas Heart Institute Notes 45th Anniversary L ast month, on Friday, August 3, 2007, the Texas Heart Institute marked its 45th anniversary. Since its visionary founding by Dr. Cooley in 1962, the Texas Heart Institute has been home to improvements in heart transplantation, surgical techniques and mechanical assist devices that have offered hope to people in Texas, across the United States and around the world. (continued on page 18) In MeMorIaM S adly, the city of Houston, the state of Texas and the nation lost two outstanding citizens recently. Dr. John P. McGovern was internationally known as a distinguished American physician, philanthropist, humanitarian, and scholar. Professional societies, government agencies, universities, and foreign countries formally recognized his vision, leadership, integrity, character, and achievements. He was the founder of the McGovern Allergy and Asthma Clinic in Houston, Texas, President of the Board of the John P. McGovern Foundation and the McGovern Fund, and namesake of the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center of the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library and The John P. McGovern Texas Medical Center Commons, among others. We at the Texas Heart Institute were gratified to call him a friend and benefactor. (continued on back page) Stem cells are “generic” cells that can regenerate themselves and develop into specialized cells, such as cardiac cells. In stem cell therapy today, stem cells are typically removed from another part of the patient’s body—usually the bone marrow or the blood, both of which contain a variety of stem cell types. The cells are then transplanted into the heart, where they can lead to the growth of new heart muscle and blood vessels to replace damaged tissues. We look forward to a future where we can engineer indifferent cells to become heart stem cells, thereby ensuring an off-the-shelf supply of stem cells that are available to repair and regenerate the heart and other organs. Richard Dixon, Ph.D., joined THI at SLEH as director of the Wafic Said Molecular Cardiology Research Laboratories. Dr. Dixon came to THI from Encysive Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a Houston drug-discovery and development company that was purchased by Pfizer, where he served as Senior Vice President of Research and Chief Scientific Officer. Dr. Dixon and his team are working to develop methods for controlling stem cell movement that can be used to repair damaged heart tissue and to identify new stem cell populations that will Donor Highlight enhance tissue repair. T he W i l l i a m S ta m p s F a r i s h F u n d Recently, Mr. Will Farish, President of The William Stamps Farish Fund, sent a letter to THI President Dr. James T. Willerson to inform him of a $1 million pledge to the Texas Heart Institute (THI). Accompanying the check was the first of four installments in the amount of $250,000. This is not the first time that THI has benefited from the generosity of The William Stamps Farish Fund and its trustees, Mr. Farish, Cornelia Gerry Corbett, and Laura Farish Chadwick. We wish to convey our heartfelt gratitude for their perceptive understanding of THI’s needs and their generous assistance. 4 Edward T.H. Yeh, M.D., Chair of the Department of Cardiology at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and already a key collaborator in THI’s stem cell research efforts, moved into laboratory facilities at THI at SLEH. Dr. Yeh’s world-renowned research includes the discovery of three novel biochemical pathways that have revolutionized the understanding of the cell cycle progression and cell signaling. Among Dr. Yeh’s and his team’s efforts are the identification of the mechanisms that allow adult, human stem cells to produce new heart muscle cells. Robert J. Schwartz, Ph.D., joined THI at SLEH as Director of Stem Cell Engineering and Co-Director of the Heart Failure and Stem Cell Research Laboratories at THI. He is also Professor and Director of the Molecular Development and Disease Center, Institute of Biosciences and Technology, Texas A&M University System Health Science Center. Dr. Schwartz is widely recognized for his research on the developmental and genetic aspects of congenital heart disease. His studies have focused on the regulation and function of genes that are involved in the development of the heart. Using his knowledge of cardiogenesis, Dr. Schwartz has sought to develop ways of generating new heart cells for diseased or damaged hearts. Under the direction of Dr. O. H. Frazier, Chief of Cardiopulmonary Transplantation, Chief of The Center for Cardiac Support and Director of Surgical Research at THI, and Director of Transplant Service at SLEH, translational (from the laboratory to the bedside) research in the development of mechanical circulatory support devices continues. Physician scientists at THI have amassed the world’s most extensive experience in the development and use of heart assist devices to help patients with severe heart failure. More than 700 patients have received such devices at THI since the research program began. Current efforts, supported by a grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), are directed to the development of a total artificial heart (TAH) that produces continuous, pulseless blood flow. The new TAH will be an important advance over current heart replacement devices. It will be more durable (lasting for at least 10 years without needing replacement), and its size will allow it to be implanted in small adults and children. Our scientific journal, THI Journal, and scientific bulletin, HeartWatch, are now reaching more health care professionals—45,000—nationally and internationally, and we are making certain that cardiovascular physicians stay abreast of the most recent developments through symposia and continuing medical education programs available on the THI website (www.texasheart.org). A First Amended Affiliation Agreement with The University of Texas System that provides enhanced cooperation in research and education was signed in May 2009. The purpose of the amended agreement is to strengthen the collaborative effort begun in December 2004 by pursuing common interests in research and education relating to cardiovascular disease, including: (1) aligning efforts in the recruitment of world-class scientists and cardiac specialists; (2) expanding joint cardiovascular research opportunities at THI and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSC-H), and other University of Texas institutions; and (3) cooperating in international efforts in cardiovascular education and research. We recently learned that THI will receive $2.5 million for each of the next two years for its adult stem cell (continued on page 6) 5 A message from Dr. James t. willerson (continued from page 5) work from the State of Texas. We are very grateful to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Speaker Joe Straus, and Jim Pitts, Representative and Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, for helping THI with this very important financial support. It is essential that THI at SLEH be a good world citizen and share its expertise internationally. We are exploring potential partnerships in education, research, and patient care worldwide with a focus on the Middle East, the Pacific Rim, and South America presently. There have been 18 additions to the THI Board of Trustees and 10 additions to the new category of Honorary Trustee. The additions have been profiled in previous issues of Texas Heart Institute Update and the most recent additions are profiled in this issue. These ladies and gentlemen are bringing new talents and perspectives, and are enhancing decision-making processes for THI. It is very important for THI to have a daily effort to increase awareness and raise financial support for its missions. We are building a dedicated program in Development and Public Affairs for THI. The new Development & Public Affairs team will be directed by Ms. Irene Helsinger in her role as Executive Vice President and COO of THI, who transitioned from the St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System (SLEHS), where she most recently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. Her responsibilities over her 21-year association with SLEHS included Human Resources, Corporate Communications, International Marketing, and Philanthropy. In the July 21, 2009, issue of U.S.News & World Report, also online at www.usnews.com, THI at SLEH is ranked among the top ten cardiovascular centers for the 19th consecutive year. This year’s ranking is number 5, up from number 7 a year ago. Among the almost 4,900 hospitals in the nation, only 174 were of high-enough quality to be ranked in even a single specialty this year. We are very grateful to all of the doctors, scientists, nurses, support staff, and all of our friends whose work has made this possible. We are extremely grateful to the governing boards of THI and SLEH for their consistent support, encouragement, and leadership on our behalf. We are constantly striving to improve the content on the THI website. Recent improvements include Ask a Texas Heart Institute Doctor (www.texasheart.org/ heartdoctor.), where physician members of the Texas Heart Institute (THI) Professional Staff answer questions to provide the public with a better understanding of the prevention, diagnosis Donor Highlight F r e d e r i c k W e i s s m a n , M.D . Dr. Weissman has been featured previously in a Donor Highlight, but an additional distribution from his estate in the amount of $1.6 million warrants another richly deserved tribute to this extraordinary gentleman. His giving, which dates back to 1986 and now totals more than $4 million, included annual gifts, membership in The Cooley Circle, support of The Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award, and, of course, provisions for THI in his estate. We are very grateful. 6 and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. This new program ranks very high on Internet search engines. For example, on a recent search on Google, Ask a Texas Heart Institute Doctor was 1, 2, 4, and 5 out of 24 million results. On Yahoo, it was 1, 2, 3, and 4 out of 83.5 million results. More than 400 questions and answers have now been posted on the THI website. I am also communicating, Heart to Heart, every two months with friends and supporters of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital about advancements in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, and ways to reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease through healthful lifestyles, medications, and in some cases, other interventions. The second Heart to Heart focused on our research efforts to use adult stem cells to prevent disease before it develops. In addition, periodic news updates, Take to Heart - News Updates from the Texas Heart Institute, are available on our website. You can also receive Heart to Heart and Take to Heart via e-mail by signing up at www.texasheart.org/news. (continued on page 8) 7 A message from Dr. James t. willerson (continued from page 7) While this does not review all that has been accomplished in the last 11 months at THI, I hope that it emphasizes the critical importance of your ongoing involvement with THI as advisers and supporters in any manner that you can. We are making progress, and our best efforts will continue until we can prevent the development and progression of cardiovascular diseases and provide more effective treatments than exist today. We are deeply grateful for your interest and support. With gratitude and respect, James T. Jay Rosenstein E s tat e of J e a n C u mm i n s S m i t h Earlier this year, we were informed that Jean Cummins Smith’s will stated that THI should receive one-half of the net value of her residence. Mrs. Smith had been a strong and consistent supporter for many years, and this was yet another example of her extraordinary generosity. Several months later, in March 2009, THI received a check in the amount of $158,000. Our only wish is that she had informed us of her plans prior to her death, so that we could have conveyed our gratitude in person. If you have included THI in your will, please know that we would be pleased to hear from you. IN MEMORY OF Frank Abbott Mr. and Mrs. Philip I. McConnell Patrick Wylie Abbott Mr. and Mrs. Philip I. Left , from left, Dr. James T. Willerson, Dr. Denton A. Cooley and Dr. Richard Wainerdi. O n Wednesday, January 21, 2009, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey became the 14th—and first posthumous—recipient of The Denton A. Cooley Leadership Award. The evening was an inspiring affirmation of Dr. DeBakey’s remarkable contributions to medicine and society, and an important reminder of the high esteem in which he is held. Dr. Richard Wainerdi, President of the Texas Medical Center, accepted the award on behalf of the DeBakey family. Participating in the richly deserved tribute to Dr. DeBakey were Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who enjoyed a close association with Dr. DeBakey and played a leadership role in his receipt of the Congressional Gold Medal, and Dr. Denton A. Cooley, who considers Dr. DeBakey one of the three most important mentors in his career. Dr. James T. Willerson’s “State of the Heart” provided a compelling vision (see front page) for the future of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, and the introduction of and remarks by Mr. Stuart McGinney, a victim of heart failure and a heart transplant recipient, were an important reminder of the thousands of victims of cardiovascular disease who benefit from the latest advancements in treatment and technology, skillfully applied by THI at SLEH physicians. Net proceeds from the event, which totaled $482,000, are being used to uncover the basic mechanisms responsible for heart attacks, heart failure and strokes, and to develop new ways to prevent and treat them. We thank and salute the following individuals and organizations for their stellar support. In the July 21, 2009, issue of U.S.News & World Report, THI at SLEH is ranked among the top ten cardiovascular centers for the 19th consecutive year. This year’s ranking is number five (5), up from number seven (7) a year ago. Of the almost 4,900 hospitals in the nation, only 174 were of high-enough quality to be ranked in even a single specialty this year. It should also be noted that the THI at SLEH is the only heart center in the Southwest to be listed in the top ten. The 2008 top-ranked heart centers are: 1) Cleveland Clinic; 2) Mayo Clinic; 3) Johns Hopkins Hospital; 4) Massachusetts General Hospital; 5) Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital; 6) Brigham and Women’s Hospital; 7) New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell; 8) Duke University Hospital Medical Center; 9) Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; and 10) Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
