MRM Koalas
New Kids on Campus
SOAR was born to be shared. MRM’s
on-campus summer program for residents
has all the elements of a great camp — swimming, basketball, arts & crafts, badminton,
education, spiritual development. Kids
laugh, run, play and enjoy snacks and meals.
Camp counselors nurture, encourage, teach
and break up the occasional squabble.
With the opening of the spacious new
Oppenheimer Center, MRM has opened
up its awesome camp to families in the
community with special needs children.
These campers are the Koalas and they
are SOARing!
Darius and his Mom
One of our new Koalas, energetic, eight-yearold Darius, loves swimming, dives into new
activities with zest and is a friendly little
chatterbox. Julie O’Toole, Director of the
MRM Children’s Program, says, “Darius is a
real cutie and lots of fun. He likes to tattle:
‘That boy needs to go to time out.’ And he’s
not big on our dog. He’ll announce: ‘That dog
shouldn’t be in this classroom.’” He keeps the
staff on their toes.
Darius’ mom, Karen, is also his biological
grandmother. She adopted him when he was
an infant and has been his caretaker, mom,
grandma and advocate. As a 30-year teaching
veteran who also spent a few years in special
needs classrooms, she is familiar with the
issues of children with developmental delays
and autism. Navigating the system to get
help is an exercise in frustration for this new
Texan. “We moved here a year ago from
Massachusetts,” she says, “and it
seems the more I find out the
less I know.”
Discovering MRM has been a
mixed blessing. Although funding for Darius may be available
next summer through the Mental
Retardation Authority, at present
she must pay full tuition for camp
— $50 per day. Transportation is
another issue. She logs almost 100
miles per day driving him to and from
her home on the northwest side. “It’s
exhausting,” she says, “but the camp
is very good for him … and as a former
teacher I’m impressed with the quiet and
peaceful classrooms … there’s no yelling or
screaming. The children are served very
nicely in a loving atmosphere.”
Her son enjoys the camp, she says, “because
they keep his hands and feet active and his
mind going with lots of activities. And while
he is at camp, I have time away to collect
my thoughts.” (continued on page 12)

And You Just Might Go to Heaven
No guarantees, of course, but we’re pretty sure there’s a special
place in heaven for all the generous donors who reach into their
pockets and make a gift to send our kids to camp. It happens
every year at Shindig. Guests clamor to buy a week of joy for our
kids … and pure happiness is what they get!

If you could see the faces of nine-year-olds Jake and Charlie
when they mustered up the courage to do the zip line for the first
time. Or 12-year-old Nate who was terrified of “the screamer”
last year, but vowed to take it on this summer. And he did —
he put on his helmet, got in a harness and climbed the three-story
“screamer” climbing wall like a veteran mountaineer. There was
a bit of screaming, of course.

Scoot your boots on over …
This is the third summer for MRM kids to go to Camp Aranzazu
in Rockport and it was an awesome, life-changing experience
for our little campers. They swam, canoed, kayaked, fished,
hiked, shot bows and arrows, made arts and crafts, participated
in sports, embarked on daring adventures, gathered ‘round the
campfire … it was a full-tilt camping experience filled with thrills
and laughter.
Set this date aside for a night o’ dancin’ and feastin’ and good
times at the 31st Annual Grand Western Shindig: Thursday,
December 2, 2010, at Leon Springs Dancehall from 6:30 p.m.
til the cows come home (or 11 p.m., whatever suits your fancy).
MRM staff accompanied the campers — 42 kids ages 8 to 17.
Julie O’Toole, Director of the MRM Children’s Program, said,
“Our kids have many needs and challenges and our staff knows
them well, so we’re there to help the Camp Aranzazu counselors,
who are college age … and our kids love them. The camp is laid
back and flexible and an ideal environment to encourage the kids
to try new experiences.”
O’Toole has been at MRM for 20 years, and her steady presence
is a comfort to the children. She said the camp gets better every
year. “It gives the kids a sense of freedom and fun that is rare
for our children, whose complex needs require structure.”
But during this one magical week, it’s all about silliness and
gutsy courage … and profound gratitude to all the generous
MRM donors who make it possible.
Yippee Ki Yay! Shindig’s back … and we guar-on-tee it’s gonna
be the most fun you’ll have this year, y’hear?
Kick up your heels to music by the Almost Patsy Cline Band.
Chow down in style with Page Barteau Catering. Buy some
great stuff at the Live, Silent and Authentic Country Store
Auctions. Put on your best western duds and a big ole smile
and Overstreet Studios will make you look real purdy.
Ever’ day, the bang-up Chairs, Ed & Trudy Moore, and their
mighty fine team o’ planners, come up with some newfangled
fun … so stay tuned and check it out at shindig.missionroadministries.org. Wanna be a sponsor? Buy a table? Buy 10 tables?

Double the Fun!
How did we manage before the fabulous new Oppenheimer Center
and Outdoor Pavilion became the focal points for fun, fitness and
learning on the MRM campus?
Wow. Look at us now. We’re serving twice as many clients in our
Adult Day Care Program and have created spacious, comfortable,
well-equipped facilities for 145 children and adults who reside on the
campus or who attend the campus for day programs.
Busy children and adults enjoy the large, air-conditioned recreation/
convocation Oppenheimer Center and the open-air, covered Pavilion.
Day Habilitation clients have gained a lovely dining area and kitchen
for lunch and training and we’ve already held dances and carnivals in
the Pavilion.
Others in the community are also benefitting from our new spaces.

special needs; and Kinetic Kids, another non-profit that serves
special needs children, is using our gymnasium for their basketball
programs.
MRM is a happening place. And our amazing team brought this
great project in under budget — even including lights, paving,
removal of old facilities, fencing, electronic gates and signage.
Love and thanks to all who made this dream come true!

MRM KOALAS
(continued from cover)
It’s a challenge for this intelligent, thoughtful woman to be
raising a child at an age when she had thought she’d be enjoying
a relaxing retirement. While her peers are experiencing a new
chapter of freedom and self-discovery, Karen is beset with
worries, struggling with decisions and making sacrifices.
Darius, who has autism and functions at the level of a five-yearold with the language skills of a four-year-old, requires structure.
Karen would love a bit of spontaneity in her life, but must focus
on structure instead to accommodate her son’s needs.
She wonders: Will he ever catch up? Will the gap close?
And she answers with a sigh, “The gap will probably continue
to widen.”
Helping Kids & Parents
Mission Road is grateful to be of help to families like Karen and
Darius. Expanding SOAR into the community helps provide
respite for weary caregivers, while engaging children in social,
recreational, physical, intellectual and spiritual programs to
enhance their lives.
Julie O’Toole says, “We’ve developed a really great camp for
children outside our MRM community and the interest is
enormous and growing. Funding is an issue for many, however,
along with transportation … so we’re working with families,
directing them to services that can help fund their children.
Next year will be better.”
Parents feel confident leaving their children at MRM. O’Toole
says, “Our staff is always prepared … because anything can
happen with this population. Every day, some new predicament
comes along that we creatively work through. It’s not stuff you
learn from a book; it’s from years of providing services.”
That’s the MRM magic at work for our kids and kids in our
community. Just another way we spread the love.
