A LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AND THE HEADMASTER
Convocation Day 2014 marked the 60th time the Owls have kicked off the school year on the Park Avenue
campus. As 644 students raised their right hands and affirmed their commitment to our Honor Code, they
provided a living link to the boys who sat in their seats in years past and to the boys
yet to arrive.
They also embodied our continuing commitment to serve as “a college-preparatory
school dedicated to academic excellence, cultivation of service and leadership, and the
development of well-rounded young men of strong moral character, consistent with
the school’s Christian tradition.”
Thanks to you, we are able to fulfill that mission. A total of 2,319 donors gave more
than $2,329,527 million in total gifts, including $1,238,255 in unrestricted Annual
Fund giving. The Board of Trustees along with the faculty and staff led with
100-percent Annual Fund participation. Nearly 75 percent of parents and nearly 38
percent of alumni made donations to the fund. Our Lynn and Thorn Society donors
contributed $908,928, representing 73 percent of all Annual Fund dollars. Grandparents
contributed a record $112,995.
Samuel N. Graham II ’80
Your unrestricted Annual Fund donations bridged the 20-percent gap between tuition
and the actual cost of an MUS education and helped provide need-based aid for our
students. In addition you provided for essential improvements, including the following:
• New Robotics Lab in the McCaughan Science Center
• AP Chemistry Lab expansion to accommodate more students
• Renovation of the computer classroom and the kitchen in Hyde Library,
plus the addition of colorful upholstered furniture to seating areas
• Industrial washing machine for the Athletics Department
• New computers: 10 desktop computers in Hyde Library, 20 desktops in
the Upper School Computer Lab, 42 teacher laptops, and 20 staff desktops
• Painting in the Lower School
• Utility vehicle for grounds crew
• Landscape improvements
• New SawStop table saw for the Art Department (stops if accidentally touched)
• Additional automated external defibrillator (for a total of nine AED’s installed
throughout campus)
Ellis L. Haguewood
On behalf of our students and faculty, we thank you for your continuing generosity, trust,
and confidence. Here’s to the next 60 years!

Memphis University School is a college-preparatory
school dedicated to academic excellence, cultivation
of service and leadership, and the development of
well-rounded young men of strong moral character,
consistent with the school’s Christian tradition.
PHILOSOPHY
Memphis University School is committed to high standards of honor and integrity,
academic performance, service, leadership, and athletics, and to the transmission of JudeoChristian values.
An MUS education is characterized by a rigorous curriculum, a lively exchange of ideas,
supportive teaching, and adherence to an honor code. Its objective is to instruct students in
the skills and subject matter of the humanities and sciences, to engender successful habits
and techniques of learning, and to instill the foremost principles of personal responsibility,
morality, and gentlemanly conduct.
A dynamic extracurricular program devoted to excellence promotes leadership and service
and encourages development of physical fitness and a rich variety of talents and interests.
Non-denominational and non-sectarian, MUS seeks to foster a respectful appreciation of the
spiritual nature of people and honors the sincere expression of widely differing faiths. MUS
aspires to be a community of mutual respect and concern regardless of individual differences.

I view my contribution to the Annual Fund as an investment in the future of Memphis. If you
look at the impact MUS alumni have had on the local economy, it is a stunning testament to the
power of the MUS experience. I hope that in some small way my contribution to the Annual
Fund can help seed the future leaders of Memphis.”

Bubba Halliday ’82, left, and Clay Smythe ’85,
right, with Brian Cress, director of
youth mobilization at International Justice
Mission, for the 17th Metcalf Symposium.
Symposium Fellows
Bubba Halliday ’82 and Clay Smythe ’85 welcomed Brian Cress, director of youth
mobilization at International Justice Mission, for the 17th Metcalf Symposium in February.
In communities throughout the developing world, IJM protects the poor from violence, sexual
exploitation, slavery, and other human rights abuses by collaborating with local authorities
to rescue victims, bring criminals to justice, restore survivors, and strengthen justice systems.
Halliday and Smythe founded the Metcalf Symposium to encourage student reflection on
the great ethical traditions of Western Civilization and an exchange of ideas about the arts,
humanities, the sciences, civic service, and popular culture – all from a perspective consistent
with the school’s Christian tradition. The symposium honors the late Robert M. Metcalf, a
businessman, friend of MUS, and former service elder at Second Presbyterian Church.

Much of my volunteer service has revolved
around the annual Phonathon. Not only
has that been a great way to reconnect with
former classmates and find out what they are
doing, but also it has been a great way to stay
connected to MUS and see how the board
and administration use the funds raised in the
Phonathon to continually upgrade the facilities
and the academic experience for the boys here.”
– Johnny Crews ’84, father of Tripp ’13 and George ’17,
Alumni Executive Board, Phonathon volunteer Garrott McClintock ’06 and Paul Morrow ’06

MEMPHIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL
“ I volunteer at MUS simply because I believe in the mission of the school. I’m grateful for
all the positive effects MUS has had on my life, and it is truly a joy to be able to volunteer
and see the influence the institution has on current students and families and our wider
community. Memphis would not be where it is today without MUS alumni, and I expect
even greater things out of our future alumni. I’m excited to see the impact each successive
class will make in the fields they choose to pursue. Whatever small amount I can
contribute to the school by volunteering time and effort to see the MUS mission fulfilled
is a success for me.”

MEMPHIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL
Over the years, I have volunteered my time and efforts at MUS
because I believe in giving back to the institution that has been
such a valuable part of my life. Being the parent of a current student,
I have witnessed how the school continues to uphold the high
standards that have always defined MUS as the front-runner in
the development of today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders.”

Masterful Inspiration Gives Rise to Lyrical Hale Project
Grant Burke owes his Hale Fellowship idea to Leonardo da Vinci.
While leading the 2012 MUS in Europe trip studying the life and works of the quintessential
Renaissance man, Burke discovered the master’s love of music.
“In one of daVinci’s notebooks, he drew a handful of
instrument designs, some practical, and some not so practical,”
Burke said. “I also learned he was a fantastic lute player.”
In applying for the Hale Fellowship for Faculty
Development that fall, Burke came up with a project
that blended his own da Vinci-like interests – designing
and building objects, such as a cameras, furniture, and websites,
and playing musical instruments, including the guitar and
mandolin. He proposed developing his craft as a luthier – or
stringed instrument maker.
Burke worked on the project in the MUS art studio during
the summer of 2013 and continued into the fall and winter,
creating a guitar, and tenor and soprano ukuleles. The
instruments play pretty well, in his estimation. Even better, they
are heirlooms in the making.
“I think it’s pretty cool having a guitar made with my hands
that should last at least 100 years,” he said. “I hope it stays
54
in my family a long time.”
Burke said he is extremely grateful to the Hales and
MUS for this opportunity, which sparked a new – and
rejuvenated an old – creative spirit and passion. “There is no
other way I would have been able to explore these ideas without
the generosity of the Hale Fellowship and endowment Mr. Ben
Hale made so many years ago.”
We dropped in to the art studio to ask Burke a few
questions about his process:
How did you learn how to create instruments? Like a lot
of things, I really just taught myself. I like to tinker around.
When you combine tinkering with the resources of the
Internet, there isn’t much you can’t accomplish.
How much time did you devote to this project? I spent countless
hours, and I am continuing work even as we speak.
MEMPHIS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL
What did you learn? I learned more than I ever anticipated –
from instrument design and functionality to how to
salvage wood. I had a large sweetgum tree branch fall at
my house. I sawed and dried the wood, re-sawed it into usable
instrument pieces, and created a tenor ukulele out of it.
Besides the instruments, what have you gained? The new
knowledge and creative energy benefits me in the classroom and
in my everyday life. As a direct result of the Hale Fellowship,
I am offering an artist-in-residence supplement this fall by
designing and building a guitar. Students are invited to watch,
learn, and follow along with the process. The guitar will remain
here at school for students to play and use in the recording
studio.
Do you think you will continue making instruments? It’s
definitely something I’d like to do more of, and continue to do
the rest of my life.
The Hale Fellowship for Faculty Development provides the financial
support for a faculty member to pursue professional research, study,
and travel during the summer months. Ben Hale created the first such
fund at MUS in 2002 to honor his sons: Scott ’78, Dennis ’80, and
Steve ’84. Faculty members submit proposals each year from which the
Hale Fellow is selected.

Large Holds Ross McCain
Lynn Chair of History
Jonathan Large stops by a quartet
of students studying in Humphreys Hall
to answer a question. Ten minutes later he
is still standing there, regaling the students
with fascinating details relating to their
question as they volley more queries back
to him.
Large’s encyclopedic knowledge of
history and dedication to his students
are two reasons he now holds the Ross
McCain Lynn Chair of History.
“In his six years at MUS he has
endeared himself to both students and
colleagues with his integrity of character,
his sense of humor, his excellence in
the classroom, and his profound love of
history,” Headmaster Ellis Haguewood
said. “His wealth of knowledge and his
engaged and unhurried relationship with
students have greatly benefitted the boys
in his European history and Advanced
Placement United States history courses.”
His students praise the teacher, whose
courses are known for their rigor.
Hayden Combs ’14 was impressed by
the instructor’s breadth of knowledge: “I
particularly enjoyed when he would throw
in random facts,” he said. “I definitely
learned a lot in his class.”
Large’s office is often teeming with
students, who drop by to ask questions,
56
seek advice, or simply to enjoy his
invariably entertaining conversation.
Inspired to study history in college by
reading the narrative histories of Shelby
Foote, Large has remained a devotee of
Foote’s writing. When he received a Hale
Fellowship for Faculty Development, he
spent two weeks in the Wilson Library at
the University of North Carolina studying
Foote’s letters to Walker Percy and
manuscripts of Foote’s novels and histories.
He holds a B.A. in history from Rhodes
College and an M.A. in history from
the University of Kentucky. Outside the
classroom at MUS, he was advisor to the
Government Club for several years, and he
currently assists with the trapshooting team
and the Quiz Bowl/Knowledge Bowl team.
Large said he is humbled by the
appointment to the Ross McCain Lynn
Chair of History.
“I hold MUS in the highest esteem,” he
said. “This honor is particularly meaningful
to me as I have great respect for Col. Lynn
and his contributions to the creation of
MUS as well as for the historians who have
held this chair in the past, especially Dr.
John Harkins, Dr. Bob Winfrey, and Mr.
Doug Perkins.”

Large Thoughts on History
When asked what makes the study of history vital
and intriguing, Jonathan Large answers with
characteristic eloquence and depth:
“Critics of traditional education often
characterize high school history as a boring
cavalcade of dry facts. The teaching of facts is
increasingly falling out of favor in American
education as schools emphasize new technology
and more imaginative approaches to history.
With the proper spirit, however, facts can enrich
the lives of high school teachers and students
alike. As the great historian Shelby Foote
observed, ‘A fact is not a truth until you love it.’
When facts become truth, students and teachers
have entered into the life of the mind. Studying
history can thus be exhilarating and enlightening
precisely because it introduces students to new
worlds and enables them to understand how
their own came into being.
“I particularly enjoy teaching the 19th century
in American history, for example, because it was
then that American civilization began to assume
its current shape, due to the two Industrial
Revolutions, the Civil War, westward migration,
antebellum reform movements, and the rise of a
new American diplomacy. Nineteenth-century
America was also full of bold and intrepid
leaders from whom we have much to learn:
Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee, Henry Clay,
Stonewall Jackson, Andrew Carnegie, and Mark
Twain, to name but a few. Reading and thinking
about these men, their actions, values, virtues,
and shortcomings, both draw students out of
themselves and provide them with standards
against which they can measure their own lives.
Learning about the great events and ideas to
which these and many other historical titans
contributed helps students more deeply
understand the successes and problems of the
order in which they live.”

Studying Journalism and Big City Living in the Big Apple
N
by Sherman Tabor ’15, The Owls’ Hoot Managing Editor
adventure of exploring a new part of
the city.
The Editorial Leadership class
involved discussions in which the
instructor would introduce themes,
such as what topics draw readers to
your paper, how to create captivating
layout designs, and how to maintain
a healthy relationship with the school
faculty. The students would then share ideas they
had used in their school papers or new ideas they
were considering. We also had a chance to read
and critique one another’s newspapers, which was
a great way to discover ideas for improving
our own papers.
Outside of the classroom we attended a
Broadway musical, After Midnight, and an
admissions talk for Columbia University given
by alumni.
The program was full of bright, ambitious
people from all over the country, which created
a very diverse group, almost a microcosm of
ew York City is one of the most
exciting and intimidating cities in
the world – which makes it a great
place to study journalism. During a week at
the Columbia Scholastic Press Association
Summer Journalism Workshop in Upper
Manhattan, I learned a lot about writing,
journalistic integrity, and managing a school
newspaper, but I also encountered many new
people and cultures and learned about living on
my own in a big city.
Each day I attended the Editorial Leadership
class from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and then again
from 1 to 4 p.m. Besides a few other student
activities, several new friends and I were pretty
much on our own, responsible for meals and
anything else we might need. The only restriction
was that we keep to a 30-block radius around the
Columbia University campus, where we stayed
in dorms. Drawing on my knowledge of the
city from many previous visits, I quickly learned
where to go and what to do and enjoyed the

from the Scholastic Press Association

New York itself. Every day was full of exciting
and interesting discussions, and I made some
great friends with whom I hope to stay in
touch. My experience at Columbia University
was incredible, and I am very grateful to MUS
and to the creators of the Journalism Summer
Fellowship Endowment for the opportunity.

Ouyang Participates in
Research Science Institute at MIT
by Richard Ouyang ’15
This summer, thanks to the Roy E.
Winegardner Fellowships, I had the opportunity
to interact with brilliant students from around the
world and to conduct cancer research at a worldclass facility. As one of 50 Americans chosen
from 1,100 applicants along with 33 international
students, I attended the 31st Research Science
Institute on the campus of Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.
My first week at RSI consisted mainly of
courses that provided background information
for the rest of the program. Classes included
humanities, in which we studied The Great Gatsby
and Citizen Kane, and statistics, in which we
learned the techniques necessary for our research.
In addition I took classes in biology, in which we
learned about various neuroimaging techniques,
and engineering, which covered some applications
of electricity and magnetism.
The next five weeks I had the honor of
conducting research for the Cancer Program
of the Eli and Edythe L. Broad Institute, a
collaborative effort of Boston organizations
dedicated to the genomic approach to solving
today’s biomedical problems. The president and
founding director of the institute is Eric Lander,
a leader of the Human Genome Project, cochair of President Barack Obama’s Council of
Advisors on Science and Technology, and biology
professor at MIT. Under the direction of Dr.
Pablo Tamayo, senior computational biologist at
the Broad Institute, I completed a research project
that used a computational approach to classify
cancers based on their effects on the body. Not
only was interacting with my mentor and learning
about the causes of cancer very interesting, but
contributing to cancer research was also extremely
fulfilling.
An essential part of RSI is its speaker series,
featuring distinguished professionals including
CEOs and Nobel laureates. Some of the most
memorable speakers were Noam Elkies, a
professor of mathematics who became Harvard
University’s youngest tenured professor at
26. Elkies, an extraordinarily talented pianist,
demonstrated his improvisation skills by
combining several themes to compose a song
on the spot. Other notable presenters included
Phillip Sharp, winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of
RNA splicing; Wolfgang Ketterle, winner of the
2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS
2001 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of
Bose-Einstein condensate, a new state of matter;
and Tom Leighton, CEO of the Internet-delivery
company Akamai Technologies. Meeting such
talented and successful people was motivating and
inspirational.
However, the experience of RSI was not
limited to academics. I lived for six weeks among
82 bright and engaging students from around
the world. I learned so much about the culture of
other countries, including about the legality (or
lack thereof ) of chewing gum in Singapore and
the very real (or is it?) danger of being killed by
the mythical (or are they?) drop bears of Australia.
Together we took organized trips into downtown
Boston, conducted late-night research discussions
over pizza, and worked nonstop in frantic
attempts to get our papers finished.
Though the experience involved
uncomfortably small amounts of sleep and an
intense course of work, research, and writing,
my six weeks at the Research Science Institute
was unparalleled in my life and unforgettable.
Roy E. Winegardner Fellowships
Former Trustee Michael D. Rose established this fund in 2010 to
honor the memory of his friend and mentor, Roy E. Winegardner.
Former chairman and CEO of Holiday Inns, Inc., Winegardner

of alumnus Diego P. Winegardner ’87. The income from the
endowment provides summer fellowships to enrich student talents
and the intellectual and leadership climate of MUS. The fellowships,
for rising juniors and seniors on need-based financial aid, are
determined by approval of the school administration.

opportunity to travel to England for two weeks
this summer to explore the part of the world the Romans
called Britannia. As part of a group led by professors from
Notre Dame of Maryland University, I visited towns,
museums, and archeological sites throughout the country,
all of which bear the imprint of our Roman ancestors.
Our study of Roman Britain
began in London (Londinium, as
the Romans called it), with visits to
the Museum of London, the worldrenowned collection of classical
antiquities in the British Museum,
and the Roman amphitheatre that
was discovered under the Guildhall

to these ancient ruins and artifacts,
we also came across modern examples
of Roman influence: the statue of
Boudicca, a Celtic queen who rebelled
against Roman occupation, located
prominently on the banks of the
Thames River; the classically inspired
Renaissance collection in the National
Gallery; the copious Latin inscriptions
in Westminster Abbey; a spectacular
performance of Shakespeare’s Titus
Andronicus in Globe Theatre. Indeed,
virtually every time you turn around
in London, you see the vestiges of the
language and culture of the Romans
who conquered this territory 2,000
years ago.
From our base in London,
we took several day trips to other
former Roman towns in southern

Math Instructor
Loyal Murphy ’86 Schedules
a Scheduling Conference
Loyal Murphy
Scheduling classes for an entire school – coordinating teacher
availability, classroom space, and student requirements – may
sound like a giant headache to some. To Loyal Murphy ’86,
instructor in math, it sounds like a worthy challenge.
“I view it as a puzzle with a lot of correct answers, some
better than others,” he said.
To learn more about the puzzle and the myriad possible
solutions, Murphy used the teaching fellowship portion of
his 2013 John M. Nail Outstanding Teaching Award to
attend a June scheduling workshop in Stowe, VT. Organized
by Independent School Management, the weeklong
session Scheduling Without Conflict drew about a dozen
administrators from across the country, plus a lone math
instructor from Memphis University School.
Why? Murphy says his interest in the schedule derives
from a “100-percent selfish” motive, the desire for his son,
junior Patrick Murphy, to get the most out of MUS course
offerings. Catching snippets of John Knaff ’s economics courses
in the room adjacent to his office, Murphy thought about how
he would like his son to learn the material. However, Patrick
did not have room in his current schedule. That got Murphy
thinking: “How can we come up with more possibilities so
more boys can be exposed to classes like that?”
Participants in the workshop discussed tailoring schedules
to fit a school’s mission, taking into consideration ISM
research on optimizing student learning and opportunity. They
also created a schedule for a fictitious school. Murphy said
he was pleased to discover that the MUS schedule compares
favorably with ISM recommendations.
They suggest no more than three classes back-to-back,” he
said. “It’s good to have two classes and a morning break, plus a
couple more before lunch.
Many of his fellow participants were surprised to learn the
MUS schedule request form includes the following entry: “It is
MOST important for me to have this one teacher next year.”
“They were shaking their heads in amazement,” Murphy
said. “Although it is not possible to grant every request, Mr.
60
Flip Eikner [’77] works hard to help students get the schedule
they prefer. The effort he invests is incredible, and I know he
greatly appreciates the help of Kim McAmis [scheduling and
student records coordinator].”
Murphy would like to see another piece considered for that
puzzle someday – a chance for students to take special elective
courses for the love of learning, with no homework, that would
not be included in their grade-point average.
“Wouldn’t it be neat if over the course of the upper three
grades, students could take six semester electives or 12 quarter
electives in which they could sample art history, economics,
folk guitar, grilling, or accounting?”
He admits making such a plan work with all the students’
required courses, sports and arts practices, and other activities
would add even more complexity to the scheduling enigma.
However, he enjoys contemplating the possibilities, such as
instructors teaching their hobbies and offering special classes
in the evenings.
With the training afforded by the Nail Fellowship, he
continues to ponder
options and ideas for scheduling, and he plans to share his
findings with the Academic Council.
“The Nail award is a wonderful gift,” Murphy said. “To
allow me to pursue an interest outside my field is a great
opportunity. I came back with five legal pads full of notes.
Should MUS in the future desire to revise the schedule, I feel
like I can have a positive, contributing voice.”
The John M. Nail Endowment Fund was established in 1988 in memory of John M. Nail
by his former students. Nail taught English and history at MUS in the late 1950s, instilling
in his students an enduring love of learning. Income from the endowment provides funds to
support faculty development: (1) the John M. Nail Outstanding Teaching Award, (2) the
John M. Nail Teaching Fellowship, and, (3) the John M. Nail Departmental Award. The
recipient of the awards and fellowship is determined by the senior class and presented each
year to a faculty member who teaches in the Upper School.

Math Department Retreats
With the departmental award portion of the John M. Nail Outstanding Teaching Award, the Math Department participated in a weekend
retreat at Kirkwood Golf Center in Holly Springs, MS, this summer. Instructors stayed in four-bedroom cottages, each with a large common area
where they gathered to work. Department Chair Nancy Gates said they used the time to update the curriculum, revise statistics and data analysis as
needed for each course, and revamp the Upper School and Lower School Math Labs.
Maria Burke, instructor in math, said the retreat offered a chance to deepen friendships and to examine “mission mathematics” at MUS.
“Within that format it was easy to gain a better sense of how our own courses function in the big picture,” Burke said. “It was a great
opportunity to have all the instructors contributing their perspectives to our overall curriculum.”
