75 YEARS OF SERVING THE HEALTH CARE
NEEDS ON
THE TREASURE COAST
Gathered to celebrate the acquisition of the TrueBeam system at the
Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center are: John Forde, Chair,
Martin Health Foundation Board of Directors; Dwight Denny,
Chair, Martin Health System Board of Directors; Mark Robitaille,
President and CEO, Martin Health System; and Evan Collins, MD,
President of the Martin Health Medical Executive Committee.
Martin Health System opened its doors
in 1939 in response to the need for
access to health care as identified by local
residents. For 75 years we have continued
that collaboration with the community.
Our commitment to continually advance access to care was also
exemplified in the development of the Center for Lung Health at the
Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center. The Center for Lung
Health was created to address the high incidence of lung cancer in
Martin and St. Lucie counties.
Our dedication to bringing sophisticated new technologies to Martin
Health and the generous support of the Knipe Charitable Trust, led
to the acquistion of the TrueBeam system, the latest in image-guided
radiotherapy. The first of its kind on the Treasure Coast, TrueBeam
was designed to deliver highly focused radiation treatments tailored
to each patient’s needs with unparalleled quality, safety and speed.
In 2014, our jubilee year, we also celebrated the one-year anniversary
of Tradition Medical Center, our newest hospital that was developed
to meet the growing demand for high-quality health care services in
west Port St. Lucie. The 90-bed hospital had a highly successful first
year of operation and received tremendous community support.
This jubilee year has allowed all of us at Martin Health to pause and
honor our mission and achievements over the decades.
As part of a progressive and innovative approach to the management
of complex chronic diseases—such as diabetes, obesity, heart and
lung disease—Martin Health also developed the Comprehensive
Health Management program, bringing highly skilled and trained
pharmacists into the primary care physician’s office. With their
expertise in medication management, the pharmacists are making
a significant difference by working directly with patients who have
one or more chronic conditions and are taking multiple medications.
Patients benefit from having a personal advocate help them take
control of their health.
The generous support of our community allows us to stay on top of
cutting-edge technologies and advancements in health care delivery.
Looking forward, Martin Health will continue to focus on providing
access to exceptional health care and being at the forefront of
innovative procedures, tools and programming that can enhance
the experience of our patients and their families throughout the
Treasure Coast.

DR. CARLOS MALDONADO
FORTY YEARS OF PATIENT DEDICATION
Maldonado feels very fortunate to have been able to pursue medicine
and make a difference in the lives of his patients.
While a high school student in Barcelona, Spain, Carlos Maldonado
had the opportunity to come to the United States as an exchange
student. The son of a surgeon, Maldonado had his sights on medical
school. Upon completing his medical degree in Spain, Maldonado
returned to the states for his residency on a Fulbright scholarship. He
eventually settled in Stuart after completing a vascular fellowship at
Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey.
“The leadership has done an excellent job,” he said. “They have made
a lot of good changes for the patients and physicians.” Maldonado
feels very fortunate to have been able to pursue medicine and make a
difference in the lives of his patients.
In 2003, Maldonado left his private practice to join Martin Medical
Group. “Health care has changed a lot, but change is necessary,”
Maldonado said. “We can’t go back to the way things were.”
Forty years later, Maldonado continues to practice on the Treasure
Coast and is a much-loved and highly respected general surgeon.
“I have been given the opportunity to
do what I enjoy doing and I appreciate
the many grateful patients who place
their trust in me for their care.”
“I enjoy the relationship with my patients most of all,” he said. “I have
some patients who I have known for 30 years or more.”
Maldonado has witnessed significant change over the past four
decades. He worked with three different chief executive officers at
Martin Health as he practiced surgery in the hospital, served on
the organization’s board of directors, as secretary of the executive
committee and chief of surgery. He saw the health care system grow
from 40 physicians in 1975 to the current number of more than 400.

TERRI STEINHAUER,
AT HOME IN THE
NICU
RN
“You never tire of seeing a baby born. I love working with the mothers
and babies and being there for the start of a new life.”
As a nurse in the maternal child unit at Martin Medical Center, Terri
Steinhauer feels fortunate to be working in such a “happy place.”
“My true love is taking care of the sick babies and their families,” she
said. “Newborns are so resilient. With the latest in surgical procedures
and treatments, they typically do very well and the mothers are
always so grateful for the care they receive.”
“You never tire of seeing a baby born. I love working with the mothers
and babies and being there for the start of a new life.”
As a preceptor on the unit, Steinhauer also helps train and support
new nurses. Her passion for nursing is evident in all she does.
Steinhauer joined Martin Health as a postpartum nurse after
completing her nursing degree in 1981. She has worked in different
areas of obstetrics in the 30 years she has been with Martin Health,
but finds the greatest satisfaction working in the neonatal intensive
care unit.
“Martin Health has been good to me
and has afforded me the opportunity
to grow my nursing career while
caring for my own family.”
Today, Steinhauer is one of eight nurses at the medical center who
work almost exclusively in the neonatal intensive care unit. She
feels at home caring for premature infants who are in need of extra
attention or newborns who are recovering from a serious medical
condition.

DIANA OWENS, CNA
A COMMITMENT TO PATIENT ADVOCACY
Longevity is in Diana Owens’ family and personal history. Her
mother, Arrie B. Parker, is alive and well at the age of 96. Owens, a
life-long resident of Hobe Sound, has been married for 45 years. In
2014, she celebrated her 41st anniversary with Martin Health where
she works in the same hospital in which she was born in 1952.
Hired as a ward clerk, Owens worked her way up to unit secretary
and then team center coordinator for the sixth floor unit in what is
now called Martin Medical Center. In her role, Owens interacts with
everyone on the unit, from physicians and nurses to patients and
their family members. She has a reputation for being a “take charge”
person and a strong advocate for patients.
While little may have changed in some aspects of her life, Owens
has witnessed enormous change during her employment at Martin
Health.
Owens thrives on routine – and her routine at Martin Health is one
that she loves.
“When I joined Martin Health in 1973, we had just one hospital,”
she said. “But a lot of construction was going on. The hospital looks
totally different now than it did then.”
“I’m a people person. I go room to
room every day, taking care of people,
making sure everything is going well
and seeing how I can help so that
everyone is pleased with their care.”
Owens appreciated the tight, close-knit work environment in the
early years of her employment. “It was small enough that we all knew
each other,” she said. “We only had 26 doctors at that time. Everyone
was like family.”

PAT DONOVAN FROM CAREER TO
VOLUNTEER EXTRAORDINAIRE
When Pat Donovan began volunteering with the Martin Health
Auxiliary in 1988, she was offered a position in the gift gallery at
Martin Medical Center in Stuart. At the time, the gift shop was a tiny
room with a couple of tables of merchandise.
Martin Health’s services. Proceeds from the gift shops support the
auxiliary’s pledge to the health system, special projects to enhance
patient care and a scholarship fund for those entering a health care
profession.
Fast forward 27 years later. The auxiliary now operates three gift
shops - one at each hospital - with Donovan as the coordinator. It was
a natural progression for Donovan, a retired flight attendant who also
spent many years running a gift and fireplace shop in the midwest
with her husband, Jack.
“I love being able to support projects that help families in our
community,” Donovan said.
She also loves being part of the auxiliary - and it shows. Donovan
puts in 18 hours a week and over the past 27 years has contributed
39,000 hours!
During Donovan’s tenure, the gift gallery at Martin Medical Center
moved into its current space just off the hospital’s main lobby and
significantly expanded its inventory to offer a wide range of patient
gifts. When Martin Hospital South opened in 1992, Donovan helped
establish a second gift shop there, and in 2013, a third shop was
opened at the new Tradition Medical Center.
“I have met some wonderful people
and made very good friendships,” she
said. “As long as my health holds up,
I will be here.”
With sales revenue from the three shops approaching the $3 million
mark, Donovan and her team play an instrumental role in supporting

PHILLIP JACOBS:
A LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE
In 2012, Phillip Jacob’s world was turned upside down. Diagnosed
with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Jacobs worried not only about
surviving his cancer diagnosis, but also about how he was going to
pay his medical bills. At the time, Jacobs was holding down two jobs
and attending Indian River State College.
Jacobs credits the Robert & Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin
Health for life-saving treatment and support. “Martin Health never
hesitated to help me,” he said. “They not only kept me alive but they
reduced my medical bills – which I know they were able to do because
of the support of donors.”
Two years later, after six months of chemotherapy and one month of
radiation therapy, Jacobs received word he was in remission. With
a clean bill of health, he completed his studies, received a degree in
organizational management and returned to full-time work in the
management training program for Enterprise Holdings, the company
that operates the Enterprise Rent-a-Car, National Car Rental and
Alamo Rent A Car brands in Fort Pierce.
To show his appreciation for the care he received, Jacobs requested
a grant through the Enterprise Holdings Foundation. As a result,
Martin Health was awarded $2,500 on his behalf.
Despite the pain and anguish of a cancer diagnosis and treatment,
Jacobs said he would do it all over again if he had to. “This was the
most humbling experience of my life,” he said. “It changed my life
and I’m forever grateful.”
Jacobs credits the Robert & Carol Weissman Cancer Center at
Martin Health for life-saving treatment and support.

JIM ELIZER: “THE BEST DECISION I MADE”
In early 2014, Jim Elizer knew he couldn’t put off hip replacement
surgery any longer. Diagnosed with avascular necrosis, which causes
the bone tissue in the hip ball to die due to a lack of blood supply, Jim
was in chronic pain and limping.
While joint replacement is frequently put off by patients for a
variety of reasons, advancements in technology have led to greater
satisfaction among joint replacement recipients. Jim can attest to not
only having greatly improved joint function, but a greatly enhanced
quality of life.
For more than 10 years, Jim had put off surgery while he pursued
other alternatives, including bone grafts. Having exhausted his
options, Jim scheduled surgery on both hips just two days apart from
one another. For the St. Lucie County firefighter, this seemed like the
best option that would allow him to get back on the job sooner.
The freedom from pain alone was
enough for Jim Elizer to be certain
surgery was his best choice. “For me,
it was the right thing to do.”
On January 8, 2014, Jim was wheeled out of his second surgery in
two days at Tradition Medical Center with two new custom-made,
titanium hips. The surgeries were complicated due to the deterioration
of Jim’s bones, yet one week later, he was at home recuperating and
receiving rehabilitation services.
Through an affiliation with South Florida Orthopaedics and Sports
Medicine, and Coastal Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center, 256
elective hip replacements have taken place at our three Martin Health
System Hospitals during the past year.
Overall, Jim felt the surgeries and rehabilitation went very smoothly.
“This was absolutely the best decision I made,” he said.

OUR GENEROUS PARTNERS IN CARE
As one of its core mission values, the Auxiliary not only provides
volunteer services, but also focuses on philanthropic contributions
to Martin Health System.
The Martin Health Auxiliary has played a significant role in the
organization’s mission and achievements since 1942. These men
and women come from all walks of life and backgrounds, including
retirees, working adults, college students and teenagers. They are
joined by the desire to give back to their community and together
they contribute time, experience and talents.
The Auxiliary is currently supporting their philanthropic investment
in Martin Health System with a historic pledge of $1,500,000 for the
“World Class Care on the Treasure Coast” campaign.
With 915 members, the Auxiliary
contributes 158,178 service hours with
a labor cost savings of $3.6 million.
These volunteer hours equate to 76
full-time equivalents.
Today, the Auxiliary supports more than 50 different departments
within Martin Health System, from our emergency departments and
reception desks to our gift galleries and the mailroom.

HEALTH CARE
GIFTS FROM THE HEART
The Martin Health Foundation is extremely fortunate to have the support of many generous
and thoughtful donors who play an integral role in our ability to provide exceptional
health care. This year, we would like to recognize the contributions of the Albert M. Covelli
Foundation, Bill Lichtenberger and George Clark, for demonstrating an unwavering
commitment to high-quality health care in their community.
BILL LICHTENBERGER
GEORGE CLARK
Bill Lichtenberger first became connected to Martin Health System
when a good friend asked him to be part of a giving circle to
support new radiation therapy technology at the Robert and Carol
Weissman Cancer Center. This giving circle evolved into what is
now the Barstow-Reed Society, a group of 250 Martin Health
leadership donors, in which Bill has lifetime recognition.
George Clark has been a friend of Martin Health System for
more than 30 years. A resident of the Treasure Coast since 1971,
Clark appreciates the vital role the health care provider plays in
the community. Always generous and thoughtful, Clark regularly
contributes to Martin Health annual appeals and special campaigns,
particularly those related to cardiac and cancer care.
“I want to have a good hospital
nearby for my family and the entire
community.”
When his late wife was stricken with cancer, Clark was very
appreciative of the care she received at the Robert and Carol
Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health. “My late wife used the
services of the cancer center extensively,” he said. “The care she
received was exceptional.”
Over time, Bill has become a significant friend of Martin Health
serving on committees and more recently being appointed vice
chair of the Martin Health Foundation board of directors.
“My late wife used the services of the
cancer center extensively. The care
she received was exceptional.”
A resident of both Florida and Connecticut, Bill supports many
different charities and holds close those nonprofit organizations
that help people in need. He describes his interest in Martin Health
as somewhat selfish in nature: “I want to have a good hospital
nearby for my family and the entire community.”
Now age 90, Clark has experienced a series of heart problems over
the years. He is happy to be able to demonstrate his gratitude to
Martin Health through his charitable giving. “I had a stroke last
year and Martin Health really pulled me through,” he said. “I feel
very fortunate.”
As part of one of his gifts to the organization, Bill honored his wife
with the naming of the Patricia Lichtenberger Medical Plaza next to
Martin Hospital South in Stuart.
Prior to retiring, Bill was a chemical engineer who worked for
Union Carbide and then served as chairman and CEO of Praxair.
“God has blessed me in lots of ways,” he said, “but I don’t think he
expects me to take it up to heaven with me.”

CHARITABLE
EVENTS
Chrysanthemum Ball Establishes Nursing Scholarship
The Martin Health Foundation’s Chrysanthemum Ball celebrated
its 20th anniversary on November 8, 2014 with a beautiful
riverboat-themed charity ball and more than 400 people in
attendance. The event raised $800,000 for the development of
a Mum Ball Nursing Scholarship, an initiative to increase the
number of Martin Health nurses with a bachelor’s degree in
nursing. The scholarship fund is expected to cover the education
expenses for approximately 100 Martin Health nurses who are
pursuing an advanced degree.
ALBERT M. COVELLI FOUNDATION
Albert Covelli was a self-made man. An entrepreneur from a very
young age, he owned his own produce company and went on to
become a franchisee of McDonald’s. He later became the nation’s
largest franchisee of Panera Bread and the fourth largest restaurant
franchisee in the country. Along with his wife, Jo, Albert was also
a dedicated philanthropist who donated millions of dollars to
hundreds of charitable organizations. Martin Health is grateful to
be a recipient of their generosity; most recently, the Covelli family
made a pledge to support the Mum Ball “RN to BSN” initiative,
which provides scholarships for Martin Health nurses who are
pursuing a bachelor of science degree. This gift was a way for the
family to express their appreciation for the care their beloved
husband, father and grandfather received at Martin Health before
his passing in June.
Goombay Bash Supports Infant and Family Programs
Thanks to the volunteer Lifesavers and the 850 attendees who
supported the tropical-themed 2014 Goombay Bash, the annual
fundraising event was a huge success! A total of $150,000 was
raised to support infant, pediatric and family programs at Martin
Health System. The Goombay Bash has become one of the most
anticipated summer charity events; since 2002, the event has
raised more than $1 million through community support.
“The level of patient care that Al received at Martin Health was
extraordinary,” said Jo Covelli.
“It is because of the caring and attentive
nature of every staff member to not
only Al, but our entire family, that we
felt it in our hearts to give back.”
Quality health care and a good education were both important to
Albert Covelli. Over the years, he sat on many boards, including
those of hospitals and universities, and was instrumental in helping
to organize the Ronald McDonald House.
Women in Philanthropy Cultivate the Spirit of Giving
Women in Philanthropy was formed in 2009 by local women
committed to improving the quality of health care in our community
while fostering and inspiring women as active philanthropic
leaders. Their mission is to use the values and life experiences of
diverse women across generations to promote and collectively
create healthier and more sustainable lives and communities.
Women in Philanthropy funded nearly $180,000 for a wide range
of projects at Martin Health System.
He is an example to the rest of us that hard work and determination
can change a community for the better. “Al always said God was
good to him and he wanted to help others with the blessings he was
given,” said Jo Covelli.
