2001-2002
honor roll of donors
The first Jackson Prep Honor Roll of Donors serves to recognize the many individuals and organizations who
have given generously to help fulfill the mission of Jackson Preparatory School. In the future, the Honor Roll
of Donors will appear as an insert in The Patriot magazine.
Since its inception, Jackson Preparatory School has provided a college preparatory curriculum designed to
challenge average to above-average students. Those on the Honor Roll of Donors have indicated through their
generosity their support of Jackson Prep’s mission and its dedication to developing spiritual values, honesty, a
sense of fair play, and the qualities of responsible citizenship in its students. Over the years, Prep’s faculty and
staff have held students to the highest standards, and in doing so have positively influenced the lives of thousands of graduates. Donors understand that their gifts to Jackson Prep help to foster successful alumni who
become outstanding professionals, executives, and leaders in virtually every vocation and activity. A gift to
Jackson Prep is indeed an investment in the future!
Thank you for your support!

Headmaster’s review
In last year’s Annual Report I announced the
adoption of Visions & Values—a Twenty Year
Long-Range Plan. This comprehensive and
visionary document included 45 strategic initiatives supported by 134 action plans in ten key
result areas. What has been remarkable, however,
is not the development of the plan, but how well
we have implemented it in the first year after its adoption.
Many organizations engage in long-range or strategic planning,
only to produce a document that sits on a shelf and collects
dust. That is definitely not the case with Prep’s long range plan.
During the 2001-2002 school year, the plan has been used to
establish the Board’s agenda and to guide the work of the administration and faculty. It has truly become our "marching orders"
as we seek to lead Prep into the future. Consider the progress
we have made in one year.
According to our plan, the overall goal for the academic program
at Jackson Prep is to "provide a challenging, holistic, college
prep curriculum centered on Judeo-Christian philosophy that
will support the needs of academically diverse students, instilling
in them a desire to be life-long learners." During the last year,
several actions were initiated to support this goal. Among them
were a thorough review and revision of the curriculum; the
appointment of horizontal teams among the faculty to review
major assignments and events and to
coordinate student
workloads; an increase in
the amount of money budgeted for teacher professional growth; further training
and equipping of teachers to use technology in
their instruction; and
the design of a master schedule that
supports the academic mission of the
school.
In the area of student
life our goal is to develop students who "will be
responsible, independent
learners who solve problems, take academic risks, and think rationally." Furthermore, we want our
students to "understand themselves and the changing world
around them…respect and appreciate the differences and talents
of others…value the richness of racial and cultural diversity, and
demonstrate a high degree of civility, compassion, character and
commitment." Several programs were started in 2001-2002 to
accomplish these goals. First, we instituted fall and spring
Student Service Days whereby the entire student body assisted
over 50 organizations in various community service projects
throughout the Jackson area. Second, we organized the first
Student Senate that serves as a vehicle for senior high students
to be involved in decision making and problem solving activities. Finally, we integrated the Advisory Program with the
Student Senate so that school-wide issues could be considered
and discussed among the entire senior high student body.
Our extracurricular programs explored new territory in 20012002. Due to the efforts of the Athletic Long Range Planning
Committee, Prep was able to initiate a dialogue between officials
at the Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA) and the
Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) that
resulted in crossover competition between the two associations
during the 2001-02 school year. For the fist time in history,
schools in the MPSA were able to compete with schools in the
MHSAA in all extracurricular areas including athletic, forensic,
and fine arts competitions. Although this agreement lasted just
one year, our hope is that it has laid the foundation for future
cooperation between the two organizations.
Numerous facility improvements were made during the 20012002 school year that helped Prep achieve its long-range goal of
"providing a physical environment that supports and reinforces
academic excellence
in its college preparatory curriculum."
Among these were
upgrades to academic
buildings such as the
replacement of the roof
and HVAC systems in
the junior high building and auditorium;
the construction of a
new trophy and art
exhibition area in
the lobby of the senior high school; and
enhancements to our
athletic facilities including the construction of a new
trophy case in the Patriot Center, the
resurfacing of the baseball field to improve water drainage, the
renovation of the football bleachers and locker room underneath
the stadium, the addition of lights to the softball field, and the
resurfacing of the running track. In addition, the school refinanced its existing debt, providing funds for the expansion and
improvement of the parking lots and service drives.

Headmaster’s review
What has been happening in 2002-2003? Our board committees, administration, and faculty are purposefully working to
implement other strategies and action plans developed in the
long-range plan. We have conducted a feasibility study and are
currently preparing for a major capital campaign to raise the
necessary funds for new and improved academic, athletic, and
fine arts facilities. Efforts to reconnect with our alumni continue
with the establishment of the Jackson Prep Alumni Council,
which has hosted several alumni events over the last two years.
Our inaugural alumni magazine, The Patriot, has been published
and distributed to our constituents with ongoing plans to publish the second edition next fall. We remain steadfast in our
commitment to recruit and retain the best faculty and staff possible through a competitive compensation system. Finally, we
are relentlessly pursuing the improvement and enrichment of all
of our programs and services so that we can better prepare our
students for the challenges of the future. Thank you for your
support of the mission of Jackson Preparatory School.

Annual Giving
The Importance of Annual Giving to Jackson Prep
Gifts to Jackson Prep truly make a difference! Because tuition does not cover the total
cost of a Jackson Prep education, the Annual Fund is of vital importance. Each year,
annual giving provides immediate support and services to the students, faculty, and
staff. Without the additional support of the Annual Fund, Jackson Prep could not
provide the superior education that all its students receive. During the 2001-2002
school year, gifts from benevolent donors totaled over $345,000, exceeding the goal of
$300,000. The 2001-2002 Annual Fund provided for:

A sincere "thank you" is extended to everyone who made a gift to Jackson Prep during
2001-2002. Many volunteers not only made a financial commitment but also gave of
their time to ensure a record-breaking, successful year for the Annual Fund. If you
have not made your gift for the 2002-2003 school year, please follow the example of
the loyal alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends who are listed in this
Honor Roll of Donors. With the continued support of generous patrons, the future for
Jackson Prep is brighter than ever!

why do i give to
jackson prep?
We asked a few of our donors to share why giving to Jackson Prep is a high priority for them. While their reasons for giving vary,
the impact is the same: Jackson Prep is able to provide services and educational benefits that tuition simply does not cover.
My experiences as a student at Jackson Prep had a tremendous impact on my personal development. The
instructors I had prepared me for both college and graduate work. The friendships I made have become
lasting relationships. I am proud of the legacy of excellence that Jackson Prep has developed, and I look
forward to seeing my children reap the same advantages that I received. I give to the Jackson Prep
Annual Fund not only in appreciation for what the school has meant to me but also for what Prep will do
for tomorrow’s leaders.
Dudley Wooley
Alumnus, Class of 1984
I have to confess that originally I was skeptical about giving to the Jackson Prep Annual Fund. I questioned, "How could a school that charged significant tuition ever need addition funds?" I was surprised to
learn that tuition alone does not cover the total cost to educate a student at Jackson Prep. Once Pierce
and I learned of the many activities and essentials our Annual Fund donation helped provide, we decided
to not only give to the Annual Fund but also encourage others to do the same. We hope you will join us
if you have not made your gift for this year. Your gift does make a difference!

Parent of Seth (2006) and Paul (2008)
As a faculty member and a parent at Jackson Prep, I have the opportunity to witness firsthand the "product" of investing in our school. There is a direct cause and effect relationship between family participation
and student success. It is important for us to participate by giving to the Annual Fund. We give because
it is the right thing to do.

precis club / alumni
Participation in the Precis Club, the Annual Fund gift club for alumni who donate at designated levels, has continued to increase
every year since its inception. During the 1997-1998 fiscal year, Jackson Prep alumni contributed just over $20,000 to the Annual
Fund. Results of 2001-2002 show almost $80,000 in contributions from loyal and dedicated alumni. Support of Jackson
Preparatory School by its former students is greatly appreciated. Members of the 2001-2002 Precis Club are listed below. For the
first time, every graduating class is represented in the Precis Club!

ANNUAL FUND – ENDOWMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Jackson Preparatory School depends on charitable giving to provide the quality programs, facilities, and personnel that tuition alone cannot. The
purpose of Annual Fund 2001-2002 was not only to continue the legacy of excellence but also to support some of the long-range goals stated in
Visions & Values – A Twenty-Year Long Range Plan. An opportunity to invest in the future by designating a portion of the Annual Fund contribution
to the school’s endowment needs helped to increase endowments in four important areas: Faculty Development, Tuition Assistance, Facilities
Operating, and Program Support. Special thanks are extended to donors who chose the option to contribute to one or more of these endowments.
