St. John the Evangelist Catholic School Annual Report 2011-2012 sjecs.org Working together... Hand In Hand Reverence RespectResponsibility Our mission is to prepare students for everlasting life by teaching them the Catholic faith and traditions, providing opportunities to put their faith into action, and ensuring a thorough foundation of knowledge for successful transition into secondary study. St. John the Evangelist Catholic School will serve as a national model of exemplary education grounded in Catholic faith t t t t t Empowering students to be leaders and live their faith joyfully Promoting 21st Century learning, critical thinking, and teamwork Providing a dynamic curriculum taught by highly qualified faculty and staff Implementing best educational practices and responsible stewardship Forming a collaborative relationship with parents, parishioners, alumni, and the community in a caring, inclusive environment, living by the example of Jesus From Our Principal… Dear Friends of SJE, It is with gratitude that we present you with the 2011-2012 Annual Report. We are proud of the great accomplishments of the past year noted within the pages of this report. SJE possesses a long legacy of excellence in academics. Our rigorous curriculum and outstanding faculty/staff place SJE among the top schools in the nation for high academic performance. The true value of a good Catholic education, however, is found in the rich spiritual environment. At SJE, Jesus is in the center of all that we do. Both components are necessary to fully nurture the God-given potential of each child. Through your generous support, you contribute to our mission of preparing students for everlasting life. Grounded in Reverence, Respect, and Responsibility, SJE forms well-rounded, faith-filled leaders, fully prepared academically and spiritually for the challenges and opportunities ahead of them. Your financial gift helps SJE keep tuition affordable for all, provides resources and technological advances necessary for strong, innovative academic programs, and develops students on fire with the love of Christ! Thank you for all the ways you support SJE. May God bless each one of you! Karen Vogtner Principal St. John the Evangelist Catholic School is a two-time National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1954. The Sisters remained at SJE until 1988 when Sallie McQuaid became the first lay principal. Our school has continued to grow since 1954 and now offers full-day Pre K through 8th Grade where our students are provided a Christ-centered and academically challenging environment. We are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS). We are members of GA Independent Schools Association (GISA), Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools (AAAIS), the National Middle School Association (NMSA), and the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Our 320 students come from 231 families commuting from 38 zip codes, represent over 25 countries, and speak more than 15 native languages. The St. John School community remains predominantly Catholic with 23 parishes represented. Nine faculty and staff members are SJE graduates and 30 are current parents or parents of alumni. 75% of our staff members either have advanced degrees or are currently enrolled in an advanced degree program. By collecting flat donations or per-lap sponsorship, our runners have a day full of fun-raising AND fund-raising. The Black & White Auction is a lovely event that provides an opportunity for the SJE community to come together for food and fun. The event features a silent auction with items like theater/sports tickets, vacation packages, Game Night baskets, and even a golf bag signed by Archbishop Gregory! The main event is the live auction, which includes high-demand items like reserved seats to the Christmas Musical, student art, tuition certificates, and the highly coveted First Spot in Carline. Home & School also sponsors many community-building events like Mother/Son Bowling, the Father/Daughter Dance, Sandwich Making, and the SJE 5K.
