PHYSICIAN PARTNERSHIP
Physicians of Botsford Medical Imaging, P.C.— from left, Drs. Steven Lewin, Andrew Mizzi, James Lyddon, Stephan Morse and Rocky Saenz, and unpictured, Drs. Samuel Jassenoff, Michael Schwartz, Eugene Tryciecky and Steven Zuckerman — have pledged $100,000 toward Botsford Hospital’s new breast center. Botsford Advance A publication for the donors of The Botsford Foundation HOLIDAY 2009 PHYSICIAN PARTNERSHIP RADIOLOGISTS’ PLEDGE SUPPORTS BREAST CENTER In November, Botsford Hospital opened the Dr. Louis and Lucille Spagnuolo Breast Center located in the Botsford Cancer Center on Grand River Avenue. The breast center brings digital mammography to the Botsford campus. Patients also benefit from breast ultrasound, stereotactic core biopsy and access to breast MRI—the newest, most advanced technologies to detect breast cancers in the earliest and most treatable stages. Botsford has made the screening experience less intimidating, more comfortable and encourages women not to delay their mammograms. Should a mammogram lead to a cancer diagnosis, Botsford provides advanced technologies that help their oncologists develop and implement the best possible treatment plan. Patients move seamlessly from diagnosis to treatment in the Botsford Cancer Center. continued page 4 LETTER FROM MARGO GORCHOW Executive Director, The Botsford Foundation a difference to families waiting for loved ones in the Emergency Center and to those now able to receive needed medical oncology and radiation oncology services in their community. He continues to serve on its Executive Committee and Capital Development Committee. He and his wife, Mary Anne, have two grown daughters Jill and Amy. RADIOLOGIST’S PLEDGE SUPPORTS BREAST CENTER Without the support of the community, Botsford’s breast center would not have been possible. One of the gifts that made the breast center a reality was from Botsford Medical Imaging, P.C. led by Dr. Stephan R. Morse, Chairman of Botsford Hospital’s Radiology Department. This group of radiologists has been involved in the diagnosis of hundreds of cases of breast cancer over the years. They were honored to pledge $100,000 toward this new facility. continued from cover Dr. Gordon says, “Patients diagnosed with cancer will find the support they need at the Botsford Cancer Center. The center supports Botsford’s mission to provide great care, comprehensive cancer education and physician training. The addition of the breast center is a wonderful way to complete the circle of care from start to finish.” Dr. Morse is thrilled about the new digital technology at Botsford. He says, “With digital mammography, we can review electronic images of the breast, using high-resolution monitors. We can adjust the brightness, change contrast and zoom in for specific areas of interest. Being able to manipulate images is a wonderful benefit of this technology. In addition, digital images can be stored easily, copied without loss of any information and transmitted easily without relying on one set of original films. With the new offering of digital mammography, all of Botsford’s radiology services are now completely digital.” If the results of a mammogram lead to a diagnosis of cancer, the patient has the convenience of being treated at the Botsford Cancer Center. There are two medical oncology practices located in the building, Clinical Oncology Associates headed by Dr. Craig Gordon and The Oakland Medical Group headed by Dr. Harold Margolis. Radiation oncology is also provided at the cancer center. MEMORIAL AND TRIBUTE DONORS (CONT.) NAMES IN MEMORY OR TRIBUTE APPEAR IN BOLD Leroy Juliano, D.O. cont. Or, fortunate timing. To other donors, tax incentives make the difference. Most donors have several reasons, which together provide the impetus to give. Consider how these donors came to make major gifts to Botsford’s new breast center. Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Cykiert’s charitable giving to Botsford has followed a progression. Their 2009 gift of more than $14,000 to the breast center pushed their giving to a new plateau. Lifetime giving of almost $27,000 elevated them to the “Patron” level on the hospital’s Allen Zieger, D.O. Tribute Wall and to the “Vision of Compassion” level on the Botsford Cancer Center Donor Wall, which acknowledges major donors to the Share the Vision capital campaign. Dr. Cykiert is an internal medicine specialist employed by Botsford Hospital. Scott K. Stern sold a business, and for tax reasons, found advantages to making a charitable donation. His father, Norton Stern, an investment advisor who has written planned giving articles for Botsford Advance, suggested supporting Botsford’s new breast center to him. The younger Stern acted on Dad’s advice with his gift of almost $7,000. 6 2009 AUTUMN GALA GLOWS U.S. Congressman Gary Peters speaking passionately about health care. The Guests: Botsford Hospital physicians, hospital administration and business partners, as well as community leaders. The location: The Ritz-Carlton, Dearborn. On November 14, the camaraderie among the more than 430 guests made the 2009 Botsford Autumn Gala an extraordinary celebration and highly successful fundraising event. During the cocktail reception and silent auction, guests bid on many fine auction items, including: • A 7-day stay for two at the Ixtapan Spa Hotel and Golf Resort in Mexico Dr. Harris Mainster, longtime fundraising champion of the Autumn Gala, with his wife Dr. Phoebe Mainster. • Riding in the Jetcopter 760 with WJR’s Joel Alexander • A 4-night stay at a two-bedroom condo at Disney World plus air transportation to Florida Lucille Spagnuolo unveils the image of the new breast center named by the hospital to honor her and her late husband Dr. Louis Spagnuolo. • A get-acquainted session with the penguins at The Detroit Zoo • A 7-night stay at a Sapphire Beach Club condo on St. Maarten/St. Martin in the Caribbean The dinner program included remarks from Botsford Health Care President and CEO Dr. Paul LaCasse and President of the Botsford Medical Staff Dr. Philip Kaplan. United States Congressman Gary Peters (Michigan’s 9th District), who voted for the 2009 federal budget that included an appropriation for the Botsford Cancer Center, addressed the guests. Guests lined up for the Ritz-Carlton’s Delicious and Divine Dessert Display and danced the night away to the Sun Messengers’ spectacular music. “For a long time, I have hoped for the day when we would have important fundraising events for Botsford Hospital,” says Dr. Harris Mainster, a member of The Botsford Foundation Board of Directors. “I began working with the Foundation, advocating the expansion of the Autumn Gala for this purpose. It gives me great pleasure to see how this annual celebration has evolved into not only a successful fundraiser, but also the most important social occasion of the year for the hospital.” The construction of the new Dr. Louis and Lucille Spagnuolo Breast Center was completely paid for through $500,000 in funds raised through charitable donations, which included more than $200,000 raised at the 2009 Autumn Gala. BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP FORE! In October, LSG Insurance Partners participated in the Chubb Charity Golf Challenge, hitting big at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina to bring home $7,250 for Botsford Hospital, selected for the fourth time as their designated charity. Mark Fisher, Sheldon Goldman and Steve Zack, of LSG Insurance Partners, along with Harold Etkin of Etkin & Company, were one of 45 teams from around the country competing for a portion of the 2009 purse. “…LSG has enjoyed a decades-long relationship with Botsford Hospital… we are grateful when our success on the golf course has a successful outcome for Botsford Hospital. ” Mark Fisher, Principal, LSG Insurance Partners In 2000, Chubb Group of Insurance Companies came up with an inspired idea—combine a first-class golf event for Chubb’s agents, brokers and customers throughout the United States and Canada that would also benefit charitable organizations in their local communities. In less than 10 years, the annual Chubb Challenges have exceeded everyone’s expectations, raising more than $7 million to be reinvested in non-profits where Chubb agents, brokers and clients work. “As a provider of property, general liability and other insurance solutions, LSG has enjoyed a decades-long relationship with Botsford Hospital and its affiliated organizations,” said Mr. Fisher. “At LSG, we are much more than insurance agents. LSG continually looks for new ways to partner with our clients on more than just a business level. We work to understand their evolving goals and needs. We are aware that, like other hospitals in southeast Michigan, Botsford is challenged to ensure that its Mark Fisher facilities and technologies keep pace with the requirements of modern health care while meeting the changing needs and expectations of its patients. We are pleased that the Chubb Group has made it possible for us to have one more way to participate in Botsford’s growth. And, we are grateful when our success on the golf course has a successful outcome for Botsford Hospital.” MEMORIAL AND TRIBUTE DONORS (CONT.) Held in October, the event featured a variety of local home cooks displaying their chili masterpieces with local “celebrity” judges deciding the top winners. Proceeds from past events have benefited local organizations, including the Farmington Hills Police Department’s K-9 unit, Team Farmington Special Olympics and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This year’s proceeds were generously donated to the Botsford Cancer Center. We thank Page’s Food & Spirits for including Botsford in this annual event. If you or your organization is interested in holding a third-party event to benefit Botsford, please contact Diane Shane at (248) 442-5046 or [email protected]. She would be happy to discuss any ideas you may have. PHYSICIAN PARTNERSHIP THE SPAG PROCEEDS BACK BREAST CENTER An apt use of proceeds from this year’s Botsford Medical Staff golf outing, The Spag, is to support the new Dr. Louis and Lucille Spagnuolo Breast Center, according to Dr. Eugene Laveroni, the event’s Chairman. A foursome of colleagues at The Spag held last July. From left, Drs. Sanford Vieder, Matthew Warpinksi, Darrell Vlachos and Richard Traicoff of Farmington Emergency Medicine Associates, which was one of this golf outing’s sponsors. He says, “Our medical staff has always used this summer event to raise money for local charities in an effort to give back. It makes sense for our Dr. Eugene Laveroni physicians to support Botsford, a non-profit hospital where most of us spend our entire professional lives. For The Spag to help fund the hospital’s new breast center named to honor Spag and his wife Lucille, well, it’s quite satisfying indeed.” “On behalf of The Botsford Foundation, I wish to express my deep appreciation to our physicians for voting to make a $25,000 gift from their golf outing proceeds in support of Botsford’s breast center,” says Executive Director Margo Gorchow. “Your steadfast charitable support of the hospital has made a lasting difference to Botsford and to our patients.” MEMORIAL AND TRIBUTE DONORS (CONT.) HENRY FORD WOULD ENCOURAGE GIVING TO BOTSFORD INN Have you ever wondered why Henry Ford bought the Botsford Inn? He was keenly interested in preserving Americana—think Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum, now collectively known as The Henry Ford. Another reason cited for Mr. Ford’s purchase of the inn in 1924 was that he had accompanied Clara Bryant there for dances in their youthful days, arriving by horse and buggy. When the snow was deep, they traveled to the inn by horse-drawn sleigh, such as the one in the photo. Miss Bryant became Mr. Ford’s wife in 1888. When the Botsford Inn came into their possession, the Fords had been married for 36 years. Ah, nostalgia for one’s youth. By purchasing an inn commemorative brick, you would be contributing to an important project that helps to preserve a prime example of local Americana. Once inscribed, your brick will be placed outside Botsford Inn. Small bricks are $250, large $400. Call (248) 442-5065. Mr. Ford has been widely quoted for voicing memorable thoughts. Here, we share two of his musings on money and giving for your consideration as you ponder making a charitable contribution to help fund the interior renovation and restoration of the Botsford Inn: The highest use of capital is not to make more money, but to make money do to more for the betterment of life. The man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed. Ω BOTSFORD COMMONS FOUNDATION SUPPORTS Botsford Commons has launched the Fullness of Life campaign; the first phase is directed to those living with dementia on its Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Center (third floor). Gifts to The Botsford Foundation fund this program. “Dementia presents many challenges,” says Suzanne Lipar, Recreation Manager. “By educating staff and families, personalizing residents’ environment and strengthening relationships, we hope to bring a greater fullness of life to those living on this special unit.” Staff recently trained on problem solving and communication strategies unique to caring for dementia residents and relating to their loved ones. Another component to overall well-being is integrating family members into the resident’s care plan with family nights and other interactive events. You can help the third floor to achieve an environment reflecting home by supporting the renovation of its patio. This safe place—open to fresh air and sunshine—will be a place where residents and their families can relax, visit or tend a mini garden. Please consider a gift to the Fullness of Life. Contact Camille Purdie, (248) 426-6904 or [email protected]. PLANNED GIVING DONORS FEEL ESPRIT DE CORPS WITH BOTSFORD Hermine Biechele, and son, Walter Biechele, are using estate planning to support Botsford. This summer, an attorney contacted The Botsford Foundation to say that his clients, Hermine Biechele, 80, and her son Walter Biechele, 60, had named The Botsford Foundation as the remainder beneficiary of their respective wills. Our reaction: We have to meet the Biecheles and thank them.” They graciously invited us to their home in Redford Township, where we became acquainted. The Biecheles hail from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, which borders Germany. Emigrating to Canada and subsequently to the United States, the Biechele family suffered greatly during the Second World War. They came to America with nothing but each other, their son and dreams for a peaceful and safe life. “In France, there is a humanitarian tradition through Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières,” said Walter Biechele. “Botsford doctors also do this through several longstanding medical missions. Mom and I appreciate that.” Their entrepreneurial spirit led Mrs. Biechele and her husband, Jacques, now deceased, to become business owners: he, a barber with shops in the Fisher Building in Detroit and in Southfield; she, a hairdresser with two salons. Their son owned his own travel agency. The Biechele family knows good service, having made their livings in service to their clients. Many years ago, the Biechele family became patients at Botsford Hospital where their personal physicians were on staff. Mrs. Biechele and her husband were impressed with how Botsford’s doctors, nurses and other staff treated them. They felt no discrimination though both spoke with pronounced accents. This year, Mrs. Biechele suffered a string of health problems. She credits Botsford physicians for keeping her going, including the family’s longtime primary care physician Dr. Paul Thomas, and her specialists Dr. Cynthia Sandona and Dr. Craig Gordon, as well as visits to the Emergency Center and inpatient units. Thankfully, Mrs. Biechele now feels well enough to winter at her apartment in Spain. The Biecheles appreciate Botsford’s commitment to medical education and training the next generation of health care professionals. They hope that their bequest will aid Botsford to continue its mission of personal and compassionate care. When asked how she feels about this extraordinary gift that she and her son have planned, she said, “ I am happy and at peace.” HOW TO GIVE: As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, The Botsford Foundation assists in these gift opportunities: cash, appreciated securities, property and life insurance, testamentary bequests, charitable gift annuities or charitable trusts. Please contact Diane Shane, Manager, Programs and Services, at (248) 442-5046 or [email protected]. PLANNED GIVING IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER The federal IRA Charitable Rollover law allows individuals aged 70 1/2 and older to donate up to $100,000 from their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and Roth IRAs to their favorite charitable causes, such as The Botsford Foundation, without suffering adverse tax consequences. But, this law is expiring on December 31, 2009. Since the IRA Charitable Rollover was enacted in August 2006, older Americans have made millions of dollars of new contributions to the nonprofit organizations that benefit people every day, and they did this without having to count the distributions as taxable income. 11 Please, do not delay! If you need to take a distribution from your IRA in 2009 and wish to use it to make a charitable gift to Botsford, contact The Botsford Foundation today. We will assist you in any way we can. Our donors’ gifts provide the engine that propels our team of physicians and employees to continue our work in the community. One gift at a time, the financial support we receive at Botsford allows us to change lives. A wonderful example of philanthropy changing lives is the new Dr. Louis and Lucille Spagnuolo Breast Center at Botsford Hospital. Opening in November 2009, this new comprehensive and convenient approach to the early detection of breast cancer can make a difference for many women in our community. Breast cancer is a terrible disease. With the exception of skin cancers, it is the most common form of cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. This year alone, there will be more than 192,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer affecting women in the United States. A woman’s chance of having breast cancer at some time during her life is almost one in eight. Early detection is critical. The sooner breast cancer is found, the better a woman’s chances that treatment will work. Botsford’s new breast center has the best technology available to detect breast cancer. The imaging modalities include state-of-the-art digital mammography and breast ultrasound. In addition, physicians are able to perform stereotactic breast biopsies for suspicious areas. These services are provided in a convenient and accessible location with service excellence always at the forefront. Your gifts make a difference. This is how Botsford physicians and employees are able to make these advances in our community. One gift at a time, our organization is able to add technology and resources that would not otherwise be possible. Your generosity and kindness provide tremendous benefit and change lives.
