Embracing Lives. ransforming Futures. Vol. 34, Number 2 Summer/Fall 2015 L-R, J. Warren Steen of RYE Foundation/Margo Jackson Crotts, Marcus B. Crotts, Laura Crotts Paschall, Vernon L. Walters, Jr. of Nazareth. Nazareth Dedicates Memorial Gazebo ROCKWELL—A Winston-Salem couple has made a major gift to Nazareth Children’s Home to name their campus gazebo in memory of their son. Leaders announced that a private dedicatory event was held on Wednesday, October 21, following a quarterly Board of Trustees meeting. Marcus B. Crotts and his wife, Margo Jackson Crotts, made the gift to the RYE Foundation and designated that it be utilized to provide a place of healing and hope for the children of Nazareth. At the dedication, the brick gazebo was formally named the Van Jackson Crotts Gazebo, and a bronze plaque was unveiled. Van Jackson Crotts was an Eagle Scout and graduate of North Carolina State University. He also earned an M.B.A. from Wake Forest University. He served as President of Crotts and Saunders Engineering in Winston-Salem. Earlier this year, he died at the age of 56. Josh Regan, Nazareth’s Director of Development said, “This wonderful gift from Mr. & Mrs. Crotts will be a lasting memorial to their son Van. We believe the gazebo will be a gathering place for all of the special children we serve at Nazareth.” Nazareth’s President & CEO, Vernon L. Walters, Jr. also noted, “Marcus and Margo have always been loyal and liberal supporters of Nazareth, with Marcus serving as a Trustee for many years.” Warren Steen, President of the RYE Foundation, explained that the organization has been made several charitable gifts to Nazareth. “Our philanthropy is aimed at projects in the areas of religion, youth, and education,” he said. “We have observed that the leaders of Nazareth practice good stewardship and accountability, and are genuinely concerned about the boys and girls in their care.” Currently, Nazareth is home to 52 boys and girls who live in family-style cottages, attend weekly worship services, and are enrolled in public schools, as well as Crescent Academy, the home’s on-campus school. 725 Crescent Road P.O. Williams Kalispell, MT From the Desk of the President/CEO While our staff and children prepare for the new school year, those of us privileged to actually live and work with children and families have been looking back with fond memories at Nazareth Children’s Home’s past and ahead with great hope for its future. I assure you that we think with affection and pride of all the children who have found a measure of love and care here and we have thought with gratitude and admiration of the literally thousands of warm-hearted people who have made this agency possible through their support. The children and families who come to us are troubled and face problems too difficult for them to resolve without help. They are going through hard times. They are struggling with feelings of worthlessness, confusion, frustration, sadness and anger. Their successes are few and far between. The danger of their developing a delinquent behavior pattern is real. Unaided, they will have difficultly moving from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. We are here to provide assistance and to extend the helping hand our children and families need at a crucial moment. The help we offer is available around the clock, provided by a skilled and understanding staff working to develop an effective program for each child and his/ her family. It is help that they have been unable to find in their home. The staff has worked closely together to improve the quality of care, counselling, academics, vocation education and recreation. We have the capability of providing a large measure of love and badly needed special care to serve individuals who few other individuals and organizations can help. This is true only because of the support given to us, over these many years by so many people having compassion for these hurting children and families. Your continued support is greatly appreciated by all of us here at Nazareth Children’s Home. Sincerely, Vernon Walters, Jr. President/CEO Bikers Summer Events at Nazareth It was a fun-filled summer for the children at Nazareth. Outside of the usual activities of going to the movies, swimming and playing on the basketball court, there were fun activities that also involved learning. One week was celebrated as Multicultural Week. Each home represented a culture and was responsible for decorating and planning a full course meal for that culture. They also presented information about each culture through dance, videos, drawings, etc. The cultures recognized were Indian, Greek, Chinese, Cajun, African, Cuban and French. There was also an afternoon of poetry, where the children wrote and cited their own heartfelt poems. FUNFEST 2015 & TICKET WINNERS June 6th turned out to be another huge success for Nazareth Children’s Home. Winners: 2015 Honda Civic: Willie Neal of Landis Big Green Egg: Darrell Efird of Salisbury $1,000 Bass Pro Gift Card: Victoria Armes of Kannapolis Apple iPad: David Jones of Boone NC Sony Playstation 4: Margaret Corriher of China Grove $200 Nazareth Outlet Gift Card: Jean Puckett of Rockwell Back in 2008 Darby and Betty stepped in at the last minute to continue an event our children had been looking forward to…The Bikers Toy Run. For the last 10 years the children had been treated to quarterly birthday parties and a Christmas Toy Run with lots of Bikers. In 2008 the group in charge was unable to have the Toy Run and when Darby heard this, he and his wife along with other Bike Groups stepped in to continue this tradition. This was just the beginning. Betty and Darby have worked with local businesses and have grown this event. Each quarter the children are treated to hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, cake, ice cream and lots of gifts. The children are asked to fill in a wish list for their birthday. These lists are sent to Darby and Betty who set it up on www.bikerswithacause.com. Each event is entered on this site for others to purchase gifts for the resident. Darby always reminds everyone, “you don’t have to ride a bike to participate, just join us at Nazareth or ride along in your car.” Even during some hard times for Darby and Betty, they have always been there for our children. And our children know it. They are sure to be sure that their “wish lists” have been received. If they have never been to a Biker Event, the other children are sure to update them on the event. The Christmas Toy Run will be on Saturday, December 12. The children and staff will be treated to a ham and turkey dinner with all the fixings and desserts, a visit from Santa, gifts, and will end the party with the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” Please contact the website or you can call Cheri at 704-279-5556 Ext. 117 if you would like to be a part of this Christmas Celebration. Page 4 Page 5 Carolina Counseling Needs Our clinicians at Nazareth Children’s Home strive to provide evidence-based treatment for children and adults. Wake the World On July 16th the Nazareth residents and day treatment students were able to participate in the Wake the World program on Lake Tillery. This event is a day of fun water activities for kids who would not normally get the opportunity. “I have never got to do something this awesome before!” remarked one of the kids. They were able to ride on tubes and wake boards. They also had mini golf and a therapy pony available for the kids. Prior to the event we had a lot of kids who had not even been swimming before. Some of them got swimming lessons before the event, while others were inspired to start swimming lessons after the event. Volunteers are one part of this event that make the day special. They took the time to teach the kids how to participate at various comfort levels. As this is the second year that Nazareth has been able to participate in the event some of the volunteers were able to reconnect with kids who attended the event last year. We look forward to this continuing as an annual event. For more information you can connect with the organization at www.waketheworld.org or visit the Wake the World Lake Tillery Facebook page. Crescent Academy day treatment program has been operating at two sites since April 2015. So far we have been able to serve 20 students. We are excited to announce that by November of this year we will be adding an additional site at Henderson Independent for middle school students. The program is a program designed to work with students who have struggled in a traditional classroom setting learn appropriate behaviors and social skills so that they can be successful when they transition back to a regular classroom setting. This is done by taking a therapeutic approach to interacting with students. In addition to attending during the school year, students were able to participate in a summer program. This program allowed students to have a safe, structured place to have some summer fun. Over the summer they participated in a summer reading program as well as hands-on activities such as swimming, hiking, rollerskating and arts and crafts.
