INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Community Update
The building extension to Rembrandt Court is really looking very
impressive. The builder’s are now painting, laying floor coverings and
finalizing electrical fit-out. The interior décor is coming together
beautifully, with a wonderful array of blue tones. I feel that this accommodation will be
held in high regard by the Dutch Community, and serve the community well for many years
to come.
I am also very excited to announce that as part of the new Rembrandt Court extension, we
will be offering Dutch satellite to all rooms, Wi-Fi connectivity, and Foxtel availability. As
you are all aware, at Dutch Aged Care, we continue to be focused on providing our clients
with the highest quality of care possible. We continue to receive many compliments about
our services both in Community Care and Residential.
As you are also probably aware, The Australian Government is encouraging people to stay at
home and receive services, so as to delay entering residential care for as long as possible.
The team at Dutch Aged Care would dearly like to provide more “in home” services for as
many Dutch people as possible, and as we know from our population reports, there are
many Dutch people living across all areas of metropolitan Adelaide but at Dutch Aged Care
we are not hearing from them about their needs.
We need your assistance to spread the word about our services; if you hear about a Dutch
person who is requiring some assistance at home, whether that be home cleaning, social
support or personal care, please encourage them to contact me on 8377 2322 and I will be
happy to chat with them about where we can help.
On another very sad note, I would like to take the opportunity to pay my respects to a staff
member of Dutch Aged Care who has recently passed away. Some of you may have known
Vivian Krottje who has worked as a care worker at Rembrandt Court for over 12 years.
Vivian was a genuine and caring person who loved her work, loved life and was in turn loved
by all the residents she cared for.
We love and Miss You
Rest in Peace.

From the Manager Community Services
Goede dag allemaal,
2014 is here and we have hit the ground running with lots of exciting new projects
for us to get up and going for Community Services.
The Commonwealth Government has approved funding for us to expand our Uit en
Thuis (social group) program to provide a service in both Mt Gambier and Whyalla.
Effectively this means that we are now a state-wide service which is in line with
the Dutch Aged Care’s strategic plan.
We have already employed a
Coordinator in Mt Gambier,
Nel Jans, she has good
connections with many Dutch
people living in Mt Gambier
and so she was a perfect fit.
It is hoped that Uit en Thuis
will be up and running in that
location within weeks. We are
in negotiations with the South
East Regional Community
Health Service to lease a
building known as “The
Junction” right in the heart of
Mt Gambier, with easy access
Herfst in Holland
for Dutch people who want to
join us in the new program.
Then our focus will shift to Whyalla, where we are already booked to participate in an Expo. This
way we can advertise our new service and hopefully on the same trip develop partnerships with
other providers in the area. We have a target to get the Whyalla Uit en Thuis started by April and
this will require a lot of background work before that date.
Funding was also approved for the commencement of a Community Visitors Scheme. It is hoped that
we can also use this to reach out to people of Dutch speaking background in more regional and
remote areas. To do this we will use modern technology and programs such as Skype for volunteers
to connect with persons who are isolated and in need of some friendly interaction.
So far this year we have had one successful bus trip to the Barossa Valley for our Community clients
and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Our film mornings have also recommenced with
a good range of new films available this year.
The consultants report into Home and Community Care services by David Stevens has been
received. This has given us valuable considerations and recommendations, many of which we will
take on board and use for strategic planning of our Community Services as we embrace the new and
changing environment of Community Aged Care service provision in the years to come.
Met vriendelijke groeten en tot ziens.

Uit en Thuis North
Hello everyone,
It has been a hot start to the year, this is the reason we commenced Uit en
Thuis later than usual. We were all keen to see each other again.
We have two new volunteers. Wayne is our new bus driver and Joan will be assisting at Uit en
Thuis as Rudy and Lien will be retiring from their
service to our organisation. We hope they enjoy their
next stage of life.
We had a couple of guest speakers informing us about
the Aged Rights Advocacy Service (ARAS) and
‘Incontinence’. We thoroughly enjoyed the
entertainment from ‘John Kampes’, ‘the Strutters’ and
the variety group ‘Troupdours.’
Marie Gabriel from ‘Gabriel’s little Angels’ shared with
us her beautiful price winning baby dolls (they looked
so real!)

Hallo lieve mensen!

Hello everyone,
The “Uit en Thuis” social groups
on the Fleurieu closed off a
successful 2013 with a BBQ on
Wednesday 11th of December in
the Centre Hall of the Bay Village in Victor
Harbor. Clients brought in some nice food like
salads, nibbles, drinks and some sweet treats.
Jack was in charge of the B.B.Q. and cooked
up a storm. See the photos where Karin and
Henk are helping themselves to some nice
treats. Joke is entertaining the volunteers
Annie and Ineke including their husbands,
spreading some Christmas cheers. Everybody
liked it so much that we will have a B.B.Q
again in a few months time. A week prior to
that we had again “het Sinterklaas Feest” in
Rembrandt Court and all of us did enjoy that
very much as the photos will show.
After the summer break we commenced our
regular meetings. Everybody was happy to
reunite and was happy to see each other
again. Our next outing will be on May 4th where
the group will board the ferry to Kangaroo
Island and visit the ‘Farmer’s market’ and
enjoy a nice lunch in the Penneshaw Hotel.

THE HUGO VAN DAM BEQUEST: AN ORIENTAL FANTASY
Now showing until 4 May 2014
Gallery 19A
Free admission
Highlights from the Hugo Van Dam collection of blue and white Dutch delftware and Asian ceramics are now on
display for the first time since their acquisition in 2012.
From his Adelaide Hills home, Hugo Van Dam collected ceramics for thirty years. His most obvious passion
was for chinoiserie blue and white Dutch delftware of the eighteenth century. Decorative vases are well
represented in this exhibit along with tableware such as dishes and drainer plates, and wall tiles. Together they
transform the Gallery’s collection which now has examples by the leading Netherlands manufacturers De Drie
Klokken (The Three Bells), De Grieksche A (The Greek A) and Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles (The Porcelain
Bottle, later Royal Delft).
Hugo Van Dam’s evident interest in Asia also led him to collect the wares of Asian countries traded locally and
to Europe. The Dehua wares (blanc de chine) reflect his European background and notions of connoisseurship.
Also displayed are Min yao (folk) wares from the Yuan-Song dynasties and large Burmese martaban storage
jars from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The Hugo Van Dam Bequest: An Oriental Fantasy provides the opportunity to encounter the collection of this
passionate collector.

Volkslied (Wilhelmus)
Een volkslied is een lied dat een land
symbolisch vertegenwoordigt. In Nederland is
het 'Wilhelmus van Nassouwe' het officiële
volkslied sinds 1932. Tot die tijd was het 'Wien

wel eerder ontstaan dan het 'Wien Neêrlands

Gebruik van het Wilhelmus
Het Wilhelmus kan bij nationale en
internationale gebeurtenissen gespeeld en
gezongen worden. Meestal wordt alleen het
eerste couplet ten gehore gebracht. Dit kan
worden gevolgd door het zesde couplet 'Mijn

BRAIN TRAINING FROM THE TV SHOW ABC 2 Thursday nights 8:30 p.m.
Todd's Challenge — Assessments
You saw how much Todd Sampson improved his thinking speed,
attention, and memory in Redesign My Brain. Now it’s your turn! You
can use the same exercises Todd used to improve your brain
function.
Start by taking the two assessments you saw Todd take to set your starting scores: “What’s
That” categorization (where you have to decide if an object is a writing utensil or a tool) and
Attentional Blink (where you have to notice two numbers mixed among letters).
BrainHQ from Posit Science is your personal brain gym. It is an online
program with more than 20 exercises that work out your memory, brain
speed, attention, intelligence, and people skills. Built by a team of scientists
under the renowned Dr. Michael Merzenich, the BrainHQ exercises have been
clinically proven to strengthen many aspects of brain function. Nearly 70
published studies have shown that BrainHQ exercises improve memory by 10+
years, speed up processing by 130%+, dramatically improve driving safety and
confidence, help people keep up with the busy demands of life, and even
keep people happier.
These two assessments measure your speed of thinking and attention.
The “What’s That” categorization assessment checks your thinking speed. It
measures how fast you can identify what you see and react to it correctly. In
other words, it measures how quickly you can make the right decision.
The “Attentional Blink” assessment measures your attention. In this case, it
checks how much your brain really processes what you see. You can think of
it as a measure of how alert you are.
Thinking quickly and focusing your attention are key factors in your personal sharpness. They
are what makes the difference between finding your glasses quickly and getting frustrated
looking for them; braking your car in time or getting in an accident; and choosing the best
response to a question or fumbling over an answer. So improving your thinking speed and
focus are great advantages in everyday life!

As we age, many of us have a fatal flaw that
can lead to a fatal fall - we lose our balance,
stability and co-ordination.
Stephen Jepson says he can change that for
everyone. And as a bonus, he believes it can
help you build brain cells, develop neural
pathways and prevent or delay Alzheimer's
and dementia.
What is his prescription? Play!
Stephen believes the key to never losing your
balance or your mind is in the games and
activities of our youth.
Wait until you see his incredible playground!
At age 72, Stephen Jepson is living proof of
his philosophy of lifetime fitness called
“Never Leave the Playground.” For example:
 He rides a unicycle,
 juggles while balancing on a bongo board,
 throws knives and plays jacks with both
hands,
 walks a tightrope,
 swam across Iowa’s Spirit Lake at age 66,
and has won over 80 gold medals in
swimming since age 65,and much more.
