PARISH ACTIVITIES
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
On more than one occasion, Pope Francis, has mentioned that one of the reasons why he thinks that this is the time of
Mercy, that there is a great need to proclaim the mercy of God and, thus, the reason why he called the Extraordinary Jubilee
of Mercy, is the fact that his two immediate predecessors, namely St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, had insights that he
considers inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The Pope Emeritus made the proclamation of God who is love, the central them of his pontificate and, as Pope Francis constantly points out, the canonized Polish pope unexpectedly published during the second year of his pontificate an encyclical
entitled Dives in Misericordia, Rich in Mercy, in reference to the love of the Father. In it, St. John Paul II, reminds us that the
Mercy of God is love that becomes incarnate and demands
from us conversion and concrete actions.
“Jesus Christ taught that man not only receives and experiences the mercy of God, but that he is also called "to practice
mercy" towards others: "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy." The Church sees in these words a call to action,
and she tries to practice mercy. All the beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount indicate the way of conversion and of reform
of life, but the one referring to those who are merciful is particularly eloquent in this regard. Man attains to the merciful love
of God, His mercy, to the extent that he himself is interiorly transformed in the spirit of that love towards his neighbor.
This authentically evangelical process is not just a spiritual transformation realized once and for all: it is a whole lifestyle,
an essential and continuous characteristic of the Christian vocation. It consists in the constant discovery and persevering
practice of love as a unifying and also elevating power despite all difficulties of a psychological or social nature: it is a question, in fact, of a merciful love which, by its essence, is a creative love. In reciprocal relationships between persons merciful
love is never a unilateral act or process. Even in the cases in which everything would seem to indicate that only one party is
giving and offering, and the other only receiving and taking (for example, in the case of a physician giving treatment, a teacher
teaching, parents supporting and bringing up their children, a benefactor helping the needy), in reality the one who gives is
always also a beneficiary. In any case, he too can easily find himself in the position of the one who receives, who obtains a
benefit, who experiences merciful love; he too can find himself the object of mercy.

In this sense Christ crucified is for us the loftiest model, inspiration and encouragement. When we base ourselves on this
disquieting model, we are able with all humility to show mercy to others, knowing that Christ accepts it as if it were shown
to Himself. On the basis of this model, we must also continually purify all our actions and all our intentions in which mercy
is understood and practiced in a unilateral way, as a good done to others. An act of merciful love is only really such when we
are deeply convinced at the moment that we perform it that we are at the same time receiving mercy from the people who are
accepting it from us. If this bilateral and reciprocal quality is absent, our actions are not yet true acts of mercy, nor has there
yet been fully completed in us that conversion to which Christ has shown us the way by His words and example, even to the
cross, nor are we yet sharing fully in the magnificent source of merciful love that has been revealed to us by Him.

Thus, the way which Christ showed to us in the Sermon on the Mount with the beatitude regarding those who are merciful is
much richer than what we sometimes find in ordinary human opinions about mercy. These opinions see mercy as a unilateral
act or process, presupposing and maintaining a certain distance between the one practicing mercy and the one benefitting
from it, between the one who does good and the one who receives it. Hence the attempt to free interpersonal and social relationships from mercy and to base them solely on justice. However, such opinions about mercy fail to see the fundamental link
between mercy and justice spoken of by the whole biblical tradition, and above all by the messianic mission of Jesus Christ.
True mercy is, so to speak, the most profound source of justice. If justice is in itself suitable for "arbitration" between people
concerning the reciprocal distribution of objective goods in an equitable manner, love and only love (including that kindly love
that we call "mercy") is capable of restoring man to Himself.

Más de una vez, el Papa Francisco ha dicho que una de las razones que lo llevan a pensar que este es el tiempo de la Misericordia, que hay una gran necesidad de proclamar la Misericordia de Dios y por eso mismo ha convocado al Jubileo Extraordinario de la Misericordia, son las intuiciones de sus dos predecesores inmediatos San Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI, que él
considera son obra del Espíritu Santo.

El Papa emérito hizo de la proclamación del Dios que es amor, el eje de su pontificado y, como el Papa Francisco destaca
constantemente, el Santo Papa polaco publicó durante el segundo año de su pontificado, una encíclica que nadie esperaba,
titulada Dives in Misericordia, Rico en Misericordia, en referencia al amor del Padre. En ella, san Juan Pablo II, nos recuerda
que la Misericordia de Dios, es amor que se encarna, que exige de nosotros conversión y acciones concretas.
“Jesucristo ha enseñado que el hombre no sólo recibe y experimenta la misericordia de Dios, sino que está llamado a « usar
misericordia » con los demás: « Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia ». La Iglesia ve en
estas palabras una llamada a la acción y se esfuerza por practicar la misericordia. Si todas las bienaventuranzas del sermón
de la montaña indican el camino de la conversión y del cambio de vida, la que se refiere a los misericordiosos es a este respecto particularmente elocuente. El hombre alcanza el amor misericordioso de Dios, su misericordia, en cuanto él mismo
interiormente se transforma en el espíritu de tal amor hacia el prójimo.
Este proceso auténticamente evangélico no es sólo una transformación espiritual realizada de una vez para siempre, sino
que constituye todo un estilo de vida, una característica esencial y continua de la vocación cristiana. Consiste en el descubrimiento constante y en la actuación perseverante del amor en cuanto fuerza unificante y a la vez elevante: —a pesar de
todas las dificultades de naturaleza psicológica o social—se trata, en efecto, de un amor misericordioso que por su esencia
es amor creador. El amor misericordioso, en las relaciones recíprocas entre los hombres, no es nunca un acto o un proceso
unilateral. Incluso en los casos en que todo parecería indicar que sólo una parte es la que da y ofrece, mientras la otra sólo
recibe y toma (por ejemplo, en el caso del médico que cura, del maestro que enseña, de los padres que mantienen y educan a
los hijos, del benefactor que ayuda a los menesterosos), sin embargo en realidad, también aquel que da, queda siempre beneficiado. En todo caso, también éste puede encontrarse fácilmente en la posición del que recibe, obtiene un beneficio, prueba
el amor misericordioso, o se encuentra en estado de ser objeto de misericordia.
Cristo crucificado, en este sentido, es para nosotros el modelo, la inspiración y el impulso más grande. Basándonos en este
desconcertante modelo, podemos con toda humildad manifestar misericordia a los demás, sabiendo que la recibe como demostrada a sí mismo. Sobre la base de este modelo, debemos purificar también continuamente todas nuestras acciones y
todas nuestras intenciones, allí donde la misericordia es entendida y practicada de manera unilateral, como bien hecho a
los demás. Sólo entonces, en efecto, es realmente un acto de amor misericordioso: cuando, practicándola, nos convencemos
profundamente de que al mismo tiempo la experimentamos por parte de quienes la aceptan de nosotros. Si falta esta bilateralidad, esta reciprocidad, entonces nuestras acciones no son aún auténticos actos de misericordia, ni se ha cumplido
plenamente en nosotros la conversión, cuyo camino nos ha sido manifestado por Cristo con la palabra y con el ejemplo hasta
la cruz, ni tampoco participamos completamente en la magnífica fuente del amor misericordioso que nos ha sido revelada
por El.
Así pues, el camino que Cristo nos ha manifestado en el sermón de la montaña con la bienaventuranza de los misericordiosos,
es mucho más rico de lo que podemos observar a veces en los comunes juicios humanos sobre el tema de la misericordia.
Tales juicios consideran la misericordia como un acto o proceso unilateral que presupone y mantiene las distancias entre el
que usa misericordia y el que es gratificado, entre el que hace el bien y el que lo recibe. Deriva de ahí la pretensión de liberar
de la misericordia las relaciones interhumanas y sociales, y basarlas únicamente en la justicia. No obstante, tales juicios
acerca de la misericordia no descubren la vinculación fundamental entre la misericordia y la justicia, de que habla toda la
tradición bíblica, y en particular la misión mesiánica de Jesucristo. La auténtica misericordia es por decirlo así la fuente más
profunda de la justicia. Si ésta última es de por sí apta para servir de « árbitro » entre los hombres en la recíproca repartición
de los bienes objetivos según una medida adecuada el amor en cambio, y solamente el amor, (también ese amor benigno que
llamamos « misericordia ») es capaz de restituir el hombre a sí mismo.”
