Immigration Legislation in Texas
Immigration legislation and
reform is a federal issue
however Texas legislators
are trying to implement
laws that affect immigrants
at the state level. Arizona
SB1070 is a great example
of what can take affect
when we allow states to
pass immigration legislation.
The Texas legislature has
thrown around over 40 anti
immigrant bills. They’ve
included: Making English the

print certain public documents in a language other
than English (HB81), requires

immigration status of public
school students and provide
the information obtained to
the Texas Education Agency

MORE. Democratic state
Rep. Rafael Anchía, D-Dallas,
said that many of the immigration proposals are either
bad policy or simply unconstitutional. The legislative
session ends May 30th.

Southern Grassroots Economies Project
Como reportamos el pasado
mes, somos parte del Proyecto
de base Económico del Sur
(SGEP). El comité de coordinación esta trabajando en planear
una reunión grande de cooperativas del Sur en Epes, Alabama
organizado por La Federación
de Cooperativas del Sur. Hay
dos iniciativas mas del comité
de coordinación incluyen: el
desarrollo de currículo sobre
justicia social y el desarrollo de
cooperativas, el otro es un mapa de recursos para el aprendizaje continuo y compartimiento
de cooperativas por todo el

The coordinating committee is
working on planning a large
gathering of Southern Cooperatives in Epes, Alabama hosted
by The Federation of Southern
Cooperatives. There are two
other initiatives of the coordinating committee they include:

International Cooperative Collaboration
Thanks to grants from NALAC and Alice K. Reynolds Foundation we have been able to build on our
future collaboratively. We are in our 2nd year of our cooperative partnerships with several groups. The
purpose of our collaboration is to assist each other in our challenges, analyze economic conditions for all
groups to examine how we can improve our quality of life and working conditions. The groups involved
include:
Dignidad y Justicia was formed from unemployed workers from a local, Piedras Negras, maquiladora.
Jolom Mayaetik is a community of indigenous women from different tribes that produce a variety of garments that are sold by the group.
El Centro Obrero de Piedras Negras is a center that organizes workers in local maquiladoras.
Austin Tan Cerca de la Frontera is an organization that provides education in economic literacy, labor
& civil rights in the global economy.
North Country Fair Trade is a business committed to improving wages and labor conditions for production workers in Latin America by expanding the market in the United States for basic goods produced by
fair trade production groups.

April 8th -10th, Fuerza Unida was
in Piedras Negras for a followup convening with their International Cooperative collaboration. El Hilo de la Justicia /

North Country Fair Trade of
Minneapolis and Centro Fronterizo de Obrer@s hosted our
reunion with the purpose of
reporting and informing ourselves on the progress of our
work plans that have been followed through with in other
gatherings and phone conferences. Each group reported
back and presented the products they are currently working
on. The agenda also included a
commitment to each other.
Chiapas has committed to applying for funding to continue
their work with us. Fuerza
Unida has committed to sharing resources with the entire
group. There was also discussion about collaborating by
teaching each other and sharing
each other’s sewing abilities.
We also discussed the challenges in working as a cooperative in our cities and
towns. November 11-13th will
be our
next
reunion
in Austin to
continue
our
collaboration.

The Summer Youth Leadership Program is a
safe space for young people ages 13-17 to learn
about their neighborhood community while developing leadership skills. Young people will look into
the social, cultural and political structures that surround them and discuss what works, how they
would change them and develop a plan to stay involved in their community. A young person in the
program will:

Fuerza Unida was formed in 1990 when one of the Levi’s
Strauss factories on the South side of San Antonio closed,
leaving over 1,150 workers without jobs and with unjust severance pay. The women organized themselves to demand fair
compensation and better working conditions from Levi’s.
Through organizing efforts, Fuerza Unida has become involved in many other social struggles, working on issues of
