Last November 25th, at the UNIS Hanoi Campus, approximately 10,000 adults and children enjoyed a fantastic day of cultural diversity, delicious food from all around the world, fun games and activities, an amusing entertainment program and the opportunity to do some pre-holiday season shopping. A collective effort that together raised an amazing VND 2,625 million (about US$ 125 thousand) that will be used by the HIWC Community Aid Committee (CAC) throughout 2013-2014 for various charitable projects throughout Vietnam. This energy fuelled event lasted for five and a half hours, a lapse of time that passed incredibly quickly. It is often hard to put into perspective the amount of work that takes place each year in the months prior to the actual Bazaar day. To be able to put together an event this big with such successful results demands a lot to happen on many different fronts. Of course, one needs planning, but it is essential to have a great team of coordinators to ensure the event becomes a reality. And we certainly did. It is also very rewarding on so many levels to see how so many people from such varied places and backgrounds come together, now for the 23rd time, in great spirit for such a worthwhile cause. One of the most common comments is how unique this event has become. Not only for how many people it brings together within the wider community and the increasing amount of money we have been able to raise, but essentially for the unique atmosphere that surrounds the whole event. The fact that this Charity Bazaar has grown in the hearts of so many here in Hanoi, from the generous support from our sponsors, among which I’d like to highlight Asian Tigers and UNIS, to the company that provided us with the tents, to the team that helps keep everything clean, to the families and Embassies behind the country and community tables, and to each of the more than one thousand volunteers who worked in different capacities and in almost 200 stands the day of the event, makes the Charity Bazaar one of the is the most rewarding activities for all of us at HIWC. The fundraising we do at our annual Charity Bazaar, is not only a way for the Hanoi International Women’s Club to engage in a meaningful and entertaining way with our community, but it is also the key milestone which gives us the opportunity to improve the lives of so many in our host country, Vietnam, throughout the rest of the year. We hope that in the pages of this special edition of our newsletter we have been able to reflect not only the spirit of the 2013 Charity Bazaar, but also to pay tribute and thank all those who helped make it happen. Ideally it will also serve as inspiration for many of you to take an active role in next year’s event. Thank you! By Brooke Badon, Bazaar Coordinator I am proud and excited to announce that 2013 was another record-breaking year for the HIWC Annual Charity Bazaar! Thanks to the collaboration of many different generous teams of people we were able to raise an incredible total of VND 2,625 million (just over US$125 thousand). With the hard work and dedication of the HIWC Community Aid Committee (CAC), this money will support many individuals, families and communities in need. If you are interested in learning more about the CAC and their tireless work funding projects in and around Hanoi, please visit the website www.hanoi-iwc.com. The event itself would not have been possible without the amazing efforts of the 2013 Bazaar Coordinators Team and Sponsorship Team as well as the participation of Country and Community Stands, Charity Stands, Commercial Stands, Kids Corner activities, Entertainment acts, and of course, all of our volunteers. A HUGE thanks to each and every one of you for making it all happen and for creating such a wonderful and successful day! 4 C h a r i t y B a z a a r 2 0 1 3 A special thank you to the Sponsorship and Silent auction team for working around the clock to reach out and spread the word about the Charity Bazaar, you guys did an amazing job. This year, thanks to the team and to all of our sponsors we were able to raise about US$ 16 thousand! Thank you to all of our Gold, Silver and Bronze Sponsors not only for helping us raise funds, but also for donating fantastic in-kind items to our silent auction, making it a huge hit this year! I would like to thank this year’s Diamond Sponsors: Mazars, Splendora, Thai Airways, UNIS Hanoi, VanPac Group Asia, BTG and Rent A Port. Your support means more than words can express. Your contributions were incredibly generous and instrumental in putting on this event. Not only did you help us raise money, but you also helped us immensely in preparing for the day. THANK YOU! It was an especially exciting year as we were supported by 41 Country and Community representatives. This is one of the highest numbers we have had participate and it is particularly impressive as this is all volunteer work! Thank you everyone, for your exceptional commitment to the event and to raising money for charity. The traditional food, drinks and authentic taste of culture you provided added to the vibrant atmosphere of the day and created a truly unique experience for all who attended. A special recognition is in order for the Russian Country and Community Stand team for being awarded the bestdecorated stand. Last, but certainly not least, a MASSIVE thank you to the Belgium Country and Community Stand team for raising the most funds with a total contribution of just over VND 141.3 million. I would also like to thank all of the Charity groups, Commercial stands and Kids Corner teams we had participate this year. On behalf of the Bazaar Team I will say we were blown away with your enthusiasm and it was a pleasure to work with you! The entertainment this year was above and beyond expectation. With 29 voluntary acts including DJs, bands, fashion shows, dance teams and more, the main stage was a non-stop lively source of energy throughout the day from start to finish. To all of our volunteers, thank you for reminding us of just how much can be done when we come together as a community. Between hanging signs, working the gates, selling tickets and so much more, we really could not have done this event without you. Your time is greatly appreciated by all of us on the Bazaar team. As a first time participant in the Charity Bazaar, I have to say the experience is one I will never forget. I am amazed at the amount of people who invested endless amounts of time and energy into making this day special. I am so proud to have been a part of this day and to have met so many fantastic people during the process of working on the event. It really just can’t be said enough, THANK YOU to everyone involved in the creation of the 2013 Annual Charity Bazaar! It was, to say the least, a HUGE success and a day to be remembered! By Victoria Atria , aged 13 By Tania Cattanach T Fairly new in town I got kind of roped in to help with the Bazaar. I was given the task, together with Anita, to maintain a record of people who wanted to volunteer and then give their names to the various coordinators of the bazaar. his year’s HIWC Bazaar was great fun and a great experience. My siblings and I, friends and lots of other Latin families got together to help out at the Latino stand at the bazaar. We first got together to help prepare and make food to sell at the bazaar. Then, during the event, we all took turns helping selling the food. It was great fun helping to raise money for the charities that the HIWC supports. When we weren’t helping at the stand, we toured around the UNIS fields where there was a wide variety of stalls. We tried many different types of food, including Australian hot dogs and refreshing “slushies” (crushed ice with flavored syrup) at the Philippines stand. It was amazing to see how many people there were! People from all over Hanoi came to enjoy the nice day at the HIWC bazaar. Even when my friends and I were not trying delicious food, or buying merchandise from the stands, it was incredibly fun to just admire the variety of cultures gathered there that day. The Bazaar was a wonderful way to spend my weekend, because not only did I get to hang out with my friends and family, but I got to experience many different cultures and help a great cause. I had heard the Annual Charity Bazaar was a big event in Hanoi, but I was not prepared for the huge amount of organizing involved, nor for the amount of people that attended on the day. Although, as an insider, I could see some frazzled people from time to time, the day unfolded as a happy, busy, well -received event with a record attendance. By the end of the day there were a lot of very tired people, but the feeling of having achieved and surpassed our goals was very present. For me, it was great to see the Ladies of the Club rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into it. But it was also great to see many other groups not involved with the Club giving so freely of their time and efforts for this unique Charity event. Looking forward to the next one!!!!! Tôi mong đợi Hội Chợ sắp diễn ra trong năm 2014!” w w w . h a n o i - i w c . c o m 7 8 H I W C C h a r i t y B a z a a r 2 0 1 3 Country and Community Stands By Sally Melville, Country and Community Table Coordinator. O nce again the Hanoi international community has much to be proud of after the 2013 Charity Bazaar. Another year with record crowds, record charitable donations received and one of the highest numbers of participants from different countries and communities, with a massive 41 representatives. Bazaar day is unlike anything I have experienced before. For the Country and Community participants it is both a celebration of people’s home country and an expression of gratitude and giving back to Vietnam, the country we all call home at this moment. As always the Country and Community stands were full of national colour, dress, food and drink, music, handicrafts and happy hardworking people who were there to show the best of their homeland. 1st Russian Community On the day we could not have asked for better weather, which brought out a huge crowd to enjoy the culinary delights of our Country and Community stands. The range of food and drink on offer was exceptional. Unfortunately there was just so much choice and not enough time to try it all. For those looking to do a bit of shopping there were beautiful national handicrafts from many of the countries. The whole area around the Country stands had a wonderful festive feel about it, made possible by both the great layout and the love and thought that had been put into each stand. 2nd Belgian Community What a truly wonderful day of diversity, unity and community spirit. A big thank you to all the Embassies, community groups, volunteers and sponsors involved in this year’s bazaar. Without your dedication, hard work and support this day would not be the success it was. It was a privilege to work alongside you all and I look forward to see you all back at the 2014 Bazaar. 3rd British Community Best decorated stands Each year there is a friendly completion for the best decorated stands and it is always such a hard task for our judges to make their final decision. This year our judging panel was made up of our Diamond Sponsors and Mrs Lan Anh the winner of the 2013 Female Vision Awards. Thank you to each of our judges, it certainly is a big job you undertake. It is an all-important event for charities as they are given a platform to showcase their monumentally valuable causes and it simultaneously allows them to engage in direct fundraising for themselves on the day. This year we encouraged charities to“think outside the box”and be creative in their stall decoration and layout, to help attract bazaar visitors to their tents. The charity table’s team met with several participating charities and helped them brainstorm. The outcome was an incredibly creative and colourful area of the bazaar. Charities offered a beautiful mosaic of handicrafts and a variety of entertainment. From face painting, clay painting, bamboo dances, henna tattoo art, magic balloons and manicures to motorcycle balancing and water games. There was something for the little ones and something for the bigger ones. For the first time in the history of the bazaar, the HIWC’s charitable arm, the Community Aid Committee (CAC), invited three of our partners beneficiaries to visit the bazaar and enjoy a day out. Children from the Yen Phu refuge enjoyed a fun day at the bazaar and students from the Will to Live centre and Blue Dragon also had the opportunity to experience this special event as guests of the HIWC. Also for the first time this year, we introduced the “pink flag”. A small banner with the lotus flower (our HIWC logo) and the words “HIWC Beneficiary” printed on them. These flags were proudly displayed on tents of charities that had benefitted through the CAC, from the funds raised at the previous year’s bazaar. This indication helped connect the visitors of the bazaar to the charities the HIWC donated funds to in the past year. It allowed visitors the opportunity of a more in-depth look into the work and projects of the charities that were sponsored. All charities and social enterprises that participated in the 2013 Annual Charity Bazaar, were very pleased with the new set up and all expressed their desire to participate again next year. In 2013 a record number of 34 charities and 5 social enterprises participated in the HIWC’s Charity bazaar. However, the main goal of the Bazaar is fund raising, funds to be used for Charity purposes throughout the year to help many Vietnamese children, women and communities who are most in need. The Sponsorship team is one of the first teams to start moving before the Bazaar with the aim to reach out to as many businesses as possible. This year we received very generous support from our most valued Sponsors and collected over VND 336 million (US$ 16 thousand) in cash. I would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to all our Sponsors for their support, with special mention to our record breaking 7 Diamond sponsors BTG, Mazars, Rent a Port, Splendora, Thai Airways, UNIS Hanoi and VanPac group Asia. It is very rewarding to see many sponsors return from one year to the next, building a lasting relationship with HIWC. It is also encouraging to be able to welcome many new companies who have so generously stepped forward to support this worthwhile charitable endeavour. Of course, such successful work would not be possible without a wonderful sponsorship team. I would like to thank Eunice, Tanya, Natasha, Sharlene, Eva, Hanh Ly, Muriel and Nadja for their time and energy. It was a great fun and such an experience to work with all of you. As well, I am grateful to all the other members who brought in a contact or a sponsor for the 2013 HIWC Charity Bazaar. Each year we hold a Silent Auction at the Charity Bazaar. In this section of the Bazaar, various items, vouchers and services that have been donated by different organisations and companies are displayed on individual Silent Auction boards. Businesses have the chance to promote their goods 18 C h a r i t y B a z a a r 2 0 1 3 and services through their participation in the Silent Auction. Any visitor to the bazaar can register to receive a bidding number and make a bid on any item on display. Bidders can revisit the Silent Auction throughout the day. At the end of the event, the highest bidder for each item wins. In 2013, we had generous donations such as works of art, fine dining and hotel accommodation vouchers, airline tickets, SPA and fitness vouchers and we managed to raise over VND 168 million (US$ 8 thousand). The Silent Auction is a fun way to raise funds for charity and made possible by the team effort. The union is a force and nothing can be more true in the case of organising the Sponsorship and Silent Auction section of the 2013 HIWC Charity Bazaar. All funds are raised at the Annual Charity Bazaar, held on the last Sunday in November each year. This year the total raised was just over US$ 125 thousand which the CAC will use to support a wide variety of projects in Hanoi and Northern Vietnam. Projects are selected based on three categories: Health (41%), Community Aid (35%) and Education (24%) with the figures in brackets representing the percentage of overall funds donated to that category in 2012/2013. During 2013 a combination of renewed support for on-going projects, plus new ones has enabled the CAC to fund 19 projects including orthopedic eye and cleft palate surgeries, sexual and reproductive health checkups, scholarships for children to stay in school and funds to support women undergoing cancer treatment at the K hospital. Projects come into the CAC through committee members and a network of partners. The committee particularly encourages projects that are sustainable, make a direct and measurable difference, but might be too small to receive support from the large NGO’s and improve the lives of women and children in Vietnam. As the CAC does not directly deliver the projects it supports, it has a stringent process for selecting partners and will only support those with a clear and transparent process for delivery, accountability for how funds are spent and named beneficiaries. With a minimum of two committee members heading each project, the aim is to visit regularly throughout the funding period to meet the project partners and beneficiaries first hand. Teams have travelled far and wide during 2013 to projects including genital reconstruction surgeries in Hanoi and Danang, scholarships for students at the Nhan Chinh deaf school, micro finance for Black Thai women in Dien Bien Phu and a women’s shelter for victims of domestic abuse, exploitation and trafficking. Every single VND raised goes directly to projects, with no administration costs. CAC volunteers fund their own travel and expenses to visit project partners. The application process and monitoring is rigorous as committee members are aware of the need to support as many suitable projects as possible, with a professional transparency to account for the money raised by the international community Hội chợ Từ thiện HIWC 2013 đã quyên góp được tổng số tiền là hơn 125.000 đô la Mỹ 19 dự án được tài trợ trong các lĩnh vực: Sức khỏe – 41% tổng số tiền quyên góp; Giáo dục – 24% tổng số tiền quyên góp và Hỗ trợ cộng đồng – 35% tổng số tiền quyên góp Các dự án đến với chúng tôi thông qua các đối tác trong nước chứng minh được qui trình minh bạch và rõ ràng, có khả năng giải trình được các chi phí cũng như liệt kê được tên tuổi của người thụ hưởng Một số dự án tiêu biểu trong năm 2013 như phẫu thuật tái tạo bộ phận sinh dục ở Hà Nội và Đà Nẵng, tín dụng nhỏ dành cho phụ nữ dân tộc Thái đen ở Điện Biên Phủ, phẫu thuật mắt và hở hàm ếch cho các bệnh nhi tại Sơn La và Hà Giang, học bổng giúp học sinh tiếp tục tới trường cũng như hỗ trợ các bệnh nhân nữ đang điều trị ung thư tại bệnh viện K 20 H I W C C h a r i t y B a z a a r 2 0 1 3 w w w . h a n o i - i w c . c o m 21 Health By Hoang Thi Na Huong, Thien Nhan & Friends I n 2013, the Hanoi International Women’s Club (HIWC) raised US$ 10 thousand for Thien Nhan & Friends, a 100% volunteer-run project that organizes genital reconstructions for poor children with severe genital birth defects or injuries. Thanks to HIWC members’ hard work and generosity, during the June 2013 medical mission, Thien Nhan & Friends was able to purchase much-needed foreign medical equipment and support an outpatient program at Vinmec International Hospital. During this mission, 86 boys and girls were examined at Vinmec Hospital and 20 children underwent life-changing genital surgeries. As well as bringing foreign surgeons to Vietnam to operate on affected children and train local doctors, Thien Nhan & Friends supports impoverished families’ travel and hospital fees. Since 2010, the project’s Italian and American surgeons have donated their time to make five trips to Vietnam. To date, they have examined 388 children and performed 74 surgeries. These operations are made possible by generous private donations. For an average cost of just US$ 2 thousand per surgery, a child’s life can be changed forever. 24 C h a r i t y B a z a a r 2 0 1 3 This project was inspired by “Miracle Baby”Thien Nhan, a little boy who was abandoned in a jungle at birth and brutally mauled by wild animals. As a result, Thien Nhan lost one leg and suffered severe genital injuries. After news of Thien Nhan’s successful surgery spread, poor families across the country came forward seeking help for their children. Thanks to the kindness of HIWC members and other donors, more children can look forward to leading normal lives following Thien Nhan & Friends’ upcoming June 2014 medical mission. Education By Alison Vidotto, President ACCV Initially, their parents had to borrow money for their medical care. Being in dire financial situations their options became limited very quickly and it was not possible to continue to borrow; treatment was therefore limited or non-existent. Mo’s situation was more serious than Chin’s. She could not support her body weight; her bones were so brittle and, unfortunately, she suffered multiple fractures. T he Australian Charity for the Children of Vietnam (ACCV) was established in 2007 when we began working with a small group of young blind people. In 2013, just six years later, ACCV supported some 200 families living in poverty with blind or seriously ill children. ACCV is a non-funded organisation; we must generate support from individuals and the community. We are grateful for the support of HIWC; as a result our programmes have changed the lives of many. At ACCV we welcome the friendly hands-on approach of the CAC committee. The relationship between our staff and the committee is an added benefit. Regular visits by HIWC are always welcome, and I believe when organisations like ours work together for the greater good we achieve much more. We are delighted that HIWC supports ACCV’s vision and purpose in that everyone must have access to fundamental resources such as medical care and education for a community to have social development. We have worked closely on several projects involving educating young blind and disadvantaged students living in poverty, and supporting ill children at the National Paediatric Hospital. HIWC’s impact on the lives of these children cannot be overstated. I’d like to share the heart-lifting stories of Mo and Chin, both children born with Brittle Bone Disease. Since the support of ACCV, both children’s health has improved markedly. Mo is now able to sit in the wheelchair donated by ACCV, and Chin is thriving at school and generally enjoying life. Now both are able to socialise with friends and family. Their general health has also improved and they suffer much less pain and less bone fractures. All other children receiving support have similar stories, and it’s a joy to see them happy and enjoying life. What life changers basic medical care and a wheelchair or two can be! HIWC recently funded the implementation of the ELITE course in the Dong Da Blind Association. This class is already proving a big success. Fourteen blind students form the first class and these numbers will increase after Tet. HIWC funds all course materials and student transportation. These classes open enormous opportunities for young blind people. Many students have been at home isolated since they lost their sight. Socialising and learning skills for the future makes an appreciable difference to them. From classes ACCV has run in other districts we have found that after completing English language and IT courses students get jobs, go back to school and to university; some have returned to their rural community to teach English and IT to the blind. ACCV programmes would not be possible without the support of organisations like HIWC. Thank you, and “Chúc Mừng Năm Mới” to all. Mười bốn thanh niên khiếm thị ở Hội Người Mù Đống Đa đã tham gia lớp học tiếng Anh đầu tiên của ACCV - Tổ Chức Từ thiện cho Trẻ Em Việt Nam của Úc - sử dụng tài liệu và phương pháp Elite do HIWC tài trợ. Khóa học nhằm mục đích tạo cơ hội lớn cho thanh niên khiếm thị hòa nhập và tham gia hoạt động xã hội. Since its creation in 1998, the organisation enables thousands of women and men living in extremely difficult circumstances to improve their living conditions: it provides support for their own economic initiatives and helps them gain access to products offering significant health, economic and environmental benefits. It helps these people to be successful, which in turn enables them to make economic and social progress. Entrepreneurs du Monde operates in Asia, West Africa and Haiti, either through its own programmes or in collaboration with local partners. Our social microfinance projects provide female market traders, dressmakers, hairdressers, farmers and other people working in the informal sector with financial services (loans, savings, insurance, etc.) and socio-economic services, including training programmes, individual monitoring, referral to other specialised agencies, etc. Our social entrepreneurship programs encourages the distribution of products offering significant health, economic and environmental benefits: gas stoves and improved wood or charcoal cook stoves, solar-powered lamps, spirulina, and housing designed to suit the constraints and meet the needs of the local population. This area of operation serves as an incubator for social and environmental innovation which benefits the families supported by Entrepreneurs du Monde. It enables the development of a local network of independent social enterprises, managed by local entrepreneurs who, with our help, have already developed their skills. As of today we operate in 11 countries and, in 2012 for instance, we reached 145,000 families with the provision of 124,000 loans and 226,000 attendances to our training sessions in various programs. Anh Chi Em was set up in 2007 in the remote and mountainous area of Vietnamese Dien Bien Province, at the border with China and Laos, following the same belief that microfinance shall remain a tool to improve living conditions. ACE provides clients with financial services (loans, savings) and non-financial services (social trainings, business trainings, agricultural technical trainings, individual counselling and referral services). The direct beneficiaries are the most vulnerable, mainly women from marginalised ethnic minority groups living in conditions of isolation and great poverty as well as inhabitants affected by AIDS, whose incomes are mainly generated from farming (raising pigs or poultry, growing rice, manioc, corn, coffee…). Since the beginning, ACE has disbursed more than 10,000 loans and registered 28,000 attendances to its training sessions over the last 4 years. Since 2011 Hanoï International Women’s Club has contributed 586 million VND to the fund for credit. This partnership significantly participated to the growth of the portfolio, to serve directly 254 families but also to increase the financial autonomy of the program. Although it is challenging to achieve financial sustainability without compromising its social mission Anh Chi Em has made a significant step forward over the last 12 months: it covers now more than 80% of its expenses with its revenues. It is very meaningful to us that the contribution of HIWC comes from families living in Vietnam because it connects people from different communities who share the common goal of offering their children a better environment. HIWC has demonstrated its involvement not only though financial support but also through visits paid to beneficiaries in the villages and ACE staff. Đã có hơn 10.000 khoản vay và 28.000 người tham gia các khóa đào tạo trong bốn năm qua. w w w . h a n o i - i w c . c o m 27 28 H I W C C h a r i t y B a z a a r 2 0 1 3 w w w . h a n o i - i w c . c o m 29 Bronze Sponsors !"#$"%&'$ ()'*+"), $-.#/0$(-.& 01#,%2#(*&3$#4$*&5#$-.#-.*$ 6666#'.$#0&$%#$-.#/0$(-.&# !"#$%#&'%(#)*&+#$*,#-%+#-& 30 H I W C $78#9#:";<#!=>?#@A=? /BCDE7F-GFHBI'JGB86DHJ C h a r i t y B a z a a r 2 0 1 3 Silver Sponsors -%*.+"&$/)0&+1&2$/#%01" Co - Sponsors Asvelis Au Bon Marche Bhaya Cruise Chairman Kao of CTCVN Hai Phong branch Chula Commune Contrabande/ Things of Substance Crown Plaza El Gaucho Entreprise Ireland Georges Green Tangerine Guylian Hanoi Bootcamp Hanoi Club Hanoi Cooking Center Hanoi DVD Hanoi Small Goods Huong Jewellry I-Mer Foods Vietnam Indian Palace / Tandoor Ipa Nima Jaspas Restaurant La Badiane Lan salon, Sofitel Plaza Metiseko Module 7 Mondoro Furniture Novotel Halong Bay Oasis Oi Soi Oi Old Ika Joint-stock company Orana Pots’n’Pans Press Club Puratos – Grand Place Pure Heaven Santal SPA SBB TA salon Tai Tong Company Tan My Design Thank Brand The Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Hanoi Three Trees Topas Ecolodge Viet Sail Travel Zed’s Trends Credits: Thank you to photographers: Alexia Berta, Blue Dragon, Michele Stoeckel, Michiko Kadano, Monika Pacolakova, Mukkhayo Burkhanova, Sally Melville, Therese Loidl, Thibaut Matelot, Tiffany Banner, Will to Live Thank you to the 2013 HIWC Charity Bazaar Coordination team: Alexia Berta, Anita Hummel, Brooke Badon, Hoa Cuvelier, John Reilly, Katrin Kohnert, Kay Wood, Nada Offner, Nathalie Grun, Penny McDonald, Rasa Delsol, Sally Melville, Soledad Pineda, Tania Cattanach, Tanya Guthrie, Tess Dunne w w w . h a n o i - i w c . c o m 31 The Hanoi International Women’s Club (HIWC) is a non-profit group whose membership is open to all expatriate women living in Vietnam.
