S ummer is in full swing and the weather here in the east has dramatically improved over last year - I hope that you’ve been taking advantage of great driving weather! By now we’re in full swing of our summer events so ensure that you look to our calendar for events occurring near you. We’ve already had a successful introduction to a new spring event. Carol and Rob Bernacci organized a wonderful event and attracted a substantial group of members. The event culminated at the Tamahaac Club in Ancaster where lunch was served along with refreshments. A special thank you goes out to sponsors Pirelli, Bridgestone/Remington Tire and Baron Auto Parts. The weather has been a bit more successful than our F1 team unfortunately. Ferrari launched the 2010 F1 season with a 1 – 2 finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso drove a superb race to emulate Nigel Mansell and Kimi Raikkonen, as he sped to victory on his debut for Ferrari. Felipe Massa made Ferrari`s victory even sweeter with a second place finish in his first race since last year’s season ending injury. Hopefully Alonso’s podium finish in Montreal will be a harbinger for a better 2nd half of the F1 season. Our second inaugural event occurs on July 10th when Yorkville and Cumberland Avenues will be shut down for the day in order to conduct the first Yorkville Exotic Car Show www.YorkvilleExotics.com. Working closely with the Porsche club, FCA is excited about the opportunity to finally conduct a car show in downtown Toronto. If you are interested in volunteering to help out, please contact Jim Hyatt at 905-2945070 or at [email protected]. While we are at capacity for display vehicles, we would encourage anyone who’d like to sponsor one of the Ferraris on display to contact Brad Shaddick at [email protected] or (905) 761-2681 to determine if a car is available to be sponsored. With your donation to the Sick Kids Foundation, your company will be accredited with a Bronze Level sponsorship which will ensure that your company logo will appear on the event website and your company name will appear prominently on the windshield of the sponsored car. Admission to the event is free so make sure you make your way downtown on the 10th of July and join us at this great venue. Thanks to Jim Hyatt, Brad Shaddick and Nika Rolczewski for their efforts in getting this event off the ground. A reminder to you that the website for the 2010 Ferrari Club of America International Meet to be held this September 29th to October 3rd at the New Jersey Motorsports Park Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America located in Millville, New Jersey is now open and accepting registrations www.fca2010.org. This year’s event will honour the Scaglietti Race and Road Cars and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 250 GTE. Events will all be based out of the brand new Motorsports Park which features two world class road courses and state of the art facilities for the sports car enthusiast. In addition to events associated with our annual meet, a trip to the Simeone Automotive Museum in Philadelphia is on the agenda. This museum is one of the most unique and finest sports car museums in the world and includes many of the most significant racing sports cars ever built including Ferrari and Scuderia Ferrari Alpha Romeo. A varied range of accommodation is available in close proximity to the event. A key event in August is an FCA signature event in Montreal, the Ferrari Dream Drive. Held annually since 2002, this event has traditionally brought Ferrari owners together from Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal to offer rides to young patients of the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Last year the event teamed up with the annual Semaine Italienne (Italian Week) festival in Little Italy and was a resounding success. More than 60 drivers participated in the event with close to $40,000 being raised for the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. Visit www.fcaquebec.ca for more details regarding this Saturday, 14 August 2010 event. This is an ideal event to bring together our chapters and region for a great cause. August 17th is the date for our mid-summer track event at Mosport. A less than expected turnout in May has resulted in a lot of emphasis being put on improving participation levels for this upcoming event. The last track event in May was fun, but we were way below the break-even mark for registration. We'll need a much better turn out for this Tuesday, August 17th date if we're going to see more of these FCA track events. We don't need to make money on a track event, but we can't take this level of loss and continue to operate track events. I know many of you have already registered for both events and thank you very much for that! We'll need a lot more of that in the future. We've got some great sponsors contributing to our events and I sure want to make sure that our events are worth their time. To everyone who has ever had fun at our track events this is the time to show some solidarity. We need as many people as possible to sign up for the up coming date to show our support for track events. I Northern Prancer page 1 know there are at least 60 people on our track list who have attended the FCA track events in the past. Let's just say there were more people at the track visiting than were actually registered to take part in this past event. We had almost double the registration last season at any one event. If you have fun and enjoy track events, please register as soon as possible. Evan Friedman is our Track Chair. He can be contacted at the track event website www.myferrariclub.com. chionne announced that Ferrari would be launching four new cars over the next three years. In 2011, it will unveil a replacement for the 612 Scaglietti as well as a 458 Spider (Hart top/Soft top?). The following year will see a 599 replacement (or a mid-life update) and a new supercar to “replace” the Enzo. Finally, an updated California will be coming in 2013. Lots to talk about! Enjoy your summer, Forza Ferrari! A final thought on communication from the Factory courtesy of Forza Magazine. Ferrari has traditionally been very tight-lipped about upcoming models, but that appears to be a thing of the past. ERRACE - Everyone Ride/Run Against Cancer Everyday - Sunday July 17 For all of you not racing at Lime Rock, this charity event benefiting the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center of Hartford Hospital may just be the ticket. It was created by a group of professionals with the common goals to live better, healthy lives. The organization was founded by Allyson Caputo, the wife of FCA/NER member Andrew Caputo to “raise cancer awareness, raise funds for cancer research and to inspire the community to be active and health conscious”. Activities include distance cycling, running, walking, distributing of wellness information, a raffle, live entertainment, lunch, and, as a special treat for everyone, a Ferrari Corral! Several Club members participated last year and Andy hopes 25-35 cars will be there this year. Although there is no entry fee, a donation is $40 per car is suggested. Think of it, you can enjoy your Ferrari and participate in the cycling, running, or walking events if you choose. Imagine - a healthy Ferrari gathering! The event website is www.errace.org. Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer page 5 Ontario’s Highest Octane www.sunoco.ca page 6 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer Summer 2010 A Message from Remo Ferri, President Ferrari Maserati of Ontario W ith summer now in full swing we, at Ferrari of Ontario, are looking forward to seeing everyone out on the road enjoying their Ferraris. Following on the last few “challenging” years in the car business, we are very pleased to see strong renewed interest in our newer models. We are barely able to keep up with demand for the California which continues to bring new people into the Ferrari experience. Maserati is also growing its appeal in the Toronto area – with a record 17 cars sold in May we became the #1 Maserati dealer in North America! Ferrari of Ontario will be participating at the first Yorkville Exotic Car Show on July 10. We hope to see you all there. New Models By the time you read this, the first examples of the spectacular 458 Italia will be arriving for delivery to eagerlyawaiting Toronto customers. So much has already been said and written about this incredible car – the latest evolution of Ferrari’s historic line of mid-engined V8s. Rally for Sick Kids The 12th Annual Ferrari of Ontario Rally for Sick Kids will be held on Sunday, August 8th. Mark this date in your calendar now. You won’t want to miss this spectacular event. Our Facilities Remain at your Disposal We remain committed to providing the best service available on all Ferraris and Maseratis – old and new. Please remember that our service facility in Vaughan offers a 10% discount on parts and service to all Ferrari Club members. Be sure to identify yourself as a Club member when you bring your car in. Please accept our personal invitation to visit our Dealership in Vaughan, our Downtown Toronto Showroom, and our dealership in Calgary. Ciao! Building on the very fast 599FXX, the limited edition 599GTO has been announced and will be arriving in Toronto later this fall. This amazing car, which has recorded the fastest production car lap times ever at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track, is, I believe, the true successor to the original front-engined, V12 GTO. Virtually all the Toronto cars have been spoken for and we can look forward to seeing them in action next year. Ferrari Racing Ferrari of Ontario is again fielding the largest team in the North America 430 Challenge Series with six drivers – Martin Burrowes, Guy Leclerc, Mike Louli, Rob Metka, Damon Ockey and Ryan Ockey As well, Ferri Competizione will continue its partnership with Risi Racing for the ALMS race at Mosport in August. This will be the last year for the 430 Challenge Series, which will be replaced by the 458 Challenge in 2011. Ford Lincoln! – New additions to the Remo Ferrari Group I’m very pleased to announce that the Remo Ferri Group has just opened the Pine Tree Ford Lincoln dealership at 100 Auto Park Circle in Vaughan (just around the corner from Ferrari of Ontario). We look forward to providing an even wider array of transportation options for our growing clientele. Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer page 7 It’s Been a Busy Time within the Quebec Chapter Here we have the announcement of Lance Stroll joining the Ferrari Driver Academy; a picture of Bernard Pisarzewski, Events Director for the Chapter, making friends with Bernie Ecclestone and an article that appeared in the local papers printed with permission from Panoramitalia - a specialized trilingual “People” magazine done by and for the Italian-Canadian community and Italian aficionados of Québec. We also have several write ups of recent activities within the Quebec Chapter. Lance Stroll A talented young Canadian for the Ferrari Driver Academy Maranello, 9 June – The Ferrari Driver Academy has taken on a new talent, this time coming from Canada. At just eleven years of age, Lance Stroll, born on 29 October 1998 in Montreal (Quebec), is the youngest driver to enter the Maranello program. Although very young, Lance’s karting curriculum is already impressive enough to have attracted the attention of the Ferrari Driving Academy: already on his record are two wins in the Canadian national championship in the Rotax Mini Max category as well as Coupe de Montreal and Coupe du Quebec Micro Max Championship in 2008 and both Mini Max Championships in 2009. Last year, Lance finished sixth in the World Finals at Lonato in the Mini Roc category and second in the Rotax Micro Max Florida Winter Tour, a series he won this year in Mini Max along with the championships for the Tag/Cadet Florida Winter Tour. It is no surprise therefore that Lance was nominated by the Fedération Sport Automobile du Quebec as Rookie of the Year in 2008 and Driver of the Year the following year. “We are pleased to welcome Lance to our group,” commented Luca Baldisserri, who runs the Ferrari Driving Academy. “He is very young, but he has already shown in karting that he is exceptionally talented. We will follow him step by step in his forthcoming events in North America and he will soon also take part in our courses at Maranello.” Ferrari’s long and illustrious history in Formula One would never have happened if it didn’t have a slew of excellent drivers racing their cars: the Scuderia has, without question, fielded some of the sports’ best drivers. Now, the Italian supercar makers are taking their scouting and talent development to a new level as it formally launched the Ferrari Driver Academy. page 8 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer Summer 2010 A Message from Umberto Bonfa, President Ferrari Maserati Quebec A s most of Northern Prancers' readers may very well know by now, Ferrari Maserati Quebec will have a new home soon. A 44,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility to move this fantastic brand and lifestyle to the next level. Our official grand opening will be in September 2010. Although, wouldn't it be great that for our 10th year anniversary, we try to have the showroom ready in the new store for F1 weekend. And so we worked with Divco Ltd-Ltee, our construction company. Our team, Sabrina, Carsten and Richard sacrificed their time to be sure we could have this incredible opening apart from the "business as usual" in the existing store and, may I add, the busiest time of the year for us. End result; a Grand opening in our new dealership grass laid at the last moment, asphalt still smoking hot, trees and plants being planted that same morning while the windows were being cleaned. Beryl from Divco Ltd-Ltee. made it happen. Electricians wiring, drywall workers plastering, catering company setting up the food stations, A/V guys setting the lights and speakers etc.... ing, I am shaking hands like Obama. I am on cloud nine. Formula 1 is back! I humbly thank everyone for being here and as new president I pledge my unconditional commitment for this beautiful brand. I also thank Mr. Stroll (owner and avid Ferrari collector) and then introduce Ferrari North America CEO Marco Matiaci, then, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa and Stefano Domenicali. The crowd goes nuts! The weekend goes by as fast as the Ferrari F10. Cannot explain how much we missed F1 in Montreal. As I write this story (Peter Davidson patiently waiting), I am in a hotel room in Salt Lake City - here for 458 Italia training at Miller Motorsport Park. Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer page 9 QUEBEC CHAPTER - Tech Session at Ferrari Quebec April 15, 2010 by David Weeks T he annual FCA Quebec chapter Tech Session, hosted by Ferrari Quebec, is the first sign of spring and the driving season for club members in the Montreal area. This year the event took place on April 15th, and it was the last time that it will be held at the current location, as the new, larger dealership facilities on Jean-Talon will be opening in a few months’ time. Club members were greeted upon their arrival by dealership staff members and had time to admire the fine selection of new and used Ferraris and Maseratis on the showroom floor. A buffet of sandwiches and light refreshments were served in the lounge area giving everyone the chance to catch up after the winter. Recently appointed dealership president Umberto Bonfa welcomed everyone in attendance and gave an overview of news from the Ferrari world and the new facilities’ construction progress. Chapter president Sam Scalia followed, with thanks on behalf of club members to Umberto and the staff at Ferrari Quebec for hosting the popular event. One interesting detail mentioned was the fact that the latest models such as the California have software that must be ‘unlocked’ upon request via the internet by Ferrari in Maranello in order to carry out some service procedures. We were informed that although someone may own the car, they have not purchased the rights to the software that controls certain parts of it. This is also apparently the case for those who own retired formula one cars through the F1 Clienti program, who cannot even start their race cars whenever they wish due to this restriction. Around 9:30 pm the evening wound down with everyone thanking the dealership staff and heading out ready for the start of a new season of driving and enjoying all things Ferrari. Photo by Bernardo Pisarzewski Thanks to Umberto and the team at Ferrari Quebec for once again hosting an interesting evening with lots to see and talk about. Photo by Bernardo Pisarzewski After finishing eating and drinking, the approximately thirty club members headed to the garage area for the technical part of the evening where the mechanics spoke about numerous topics of interest using a 430 on the lift to demon- strate and point out details. They answered many questions on various subjects regarding members’ cars. Additionally, they gave out many tips about servicing newer models on subjects such as brakes and oil change frequency, among others. page 10 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer Summer 2010 Photo by Bernardo Pisarzewski Photo by David Weeks Photo captions: opposite left - Ferrari Quebec service manager Charles Rivard demonstrates while, opposite right, Umberto Bonfa, president of Ferrari Quebec and members look on. Above left - general view of the gathering - above right David Weeks, author on the right, and Robert Boyer QUEBEC CHAPTER - Opening Dinner May 14, 2010 by Bernardo Pisarzewski O n May 14th, the annual banquet of the Quebec Chapter was held at the Rib’n’Reef Steakhouse in Montreal. Umberto Bonfa, the newly nominated president of Ferrari-Maserati of Quebec, with the aid of his executive assistant Sabrina D’Amico, offered to organize this year’s edition of the club’s annual banquet. Although attendance (when compared to previous years) was a little more sedate, it made for a more relaxed and informal atmosphere. It actually took on the allure of a family gathering rather than a banquet. Members casually gathered at the bar to enjoy a drink, get Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America re-acquainted, and share a few post-hibernation stories and anecdotes. Once seated, a sumptuous four course meal was served with the utmost of care. Prior to shifting the reception to the steak house’s exclusive cigar lounge, the guests were invited to visit the hallowed wine cellar. There, the sommelier (or wine steward if you prefer), Richard Rodriguez, described in great detail the steak house’s various vintage wines and spirits. A heartfelt thanks goes out to Umberto Bonfa and Sabrina D’Amico for making this evening possible. Northern Prancer page 11 QUEBEC CHAPTER - The Italian Rally May 16, 2010 by Bernardo Pisarzewski W ith winter long gone and spring in full bloom, the members of the FCA Quebec chapter were graciously invited by the Vintage European Auto club (VEA), to participate in their annual “Sortie des Italiennes” - loosely translated: “The Italian’s Jaunt”. This day long event would take its participants through some of the most breathtaking mountainous scenery of Quebec’s Mauricie region. The morning began under a crisp blue sky at the Benny’s rest stop on Highway 40 just east of Repentigny. There, the FCA members gathered along with the VEA’s cortege, as well as members from the Montreal chapter of the FLU (Fiat Lancia Unlimited). The first stop was carved through the Laurentian Mountains. The (quasi) final stop was at the Auberge Lac-à-l’EauClaire; a traditional lake front country inn located in St. Alexis-Des-Mont. There, the drivers were treated to a sumptuous gourmet buffet, with trout (the local specialty) served in various mouth-watering incarnations. Prior to heading back to Montreal, the participants were invited to stop by the country home of FCA members Dominique and Michel Gou to cap the day. All in all, a great start to the driving season. in Berthierville, home of Ferrari F1 legend Gilles Villeneuve and a visit to the Musée Gilles Villeneuve. What is most wonderful about the shrine to Canada’s favourite F1 son is that the exhibition is constantly changing. The curator, Mr. Alain Bellehumeur, explains that the museum is limited in space, and that many Gilles Villeneuve artefacts are in storage off site. This constraint allows the museum to rotate the exhibition. Once on their way, the drivers covered route 138 East, through Maskinogé and Louieville, and through some of the widest lots of fertile farm land. Once on route 349 North, the terrain changed suddenly, and the drivers ploughed through an exquisite twisty road, that page 12 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer Summer 2010 QUEBEC CHAPTER - Grand Prix Party in Little Italy June 12, 2010 by Bernardo Pisarzewski I t was a divorce that shouldn’t have happened - this was declared by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone during his speech at the Formula One Opening Gala at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal. He was of course referring to the absence of a Canadian date during the 2009 F1 season. 2010 however, saw the return of F1 to Montreal, and all of the associated festivities. No sooner had the date been confirmed by the FIA, I quickly contacted the board of Little Italy’s business association to confirm that they indeed were planning a big F1 bash. About 30 Ferraris were lined up on St. Zotique Street, and a few others were sprinkled throughout Little Italy. A few members were a tad antsy when they realized that their cars were not going to be cordoned off. However, nothing major was reported, other than a few hand and fingerprints. This, considering that an estimated (and well-behaved) crowd of 50 000 was in attendance. Little Italy was closed off to traffic and the streets were lined with vendors, entertainers, performers, artists, various collectible and exotic cars, and a go-kart track. The new Fiat 500 was also on display. Needless to say, the air was charged - Montreal had truly missed its Grand Prix. Almost 130 FCA members from various regions and chapters had gathered at Ristorante Piccola Italia. The largest out of town group came from the north-eastern US and was chaperoned by Dennis Liu (co-director of the FCA New England Region). Other members came from as far away as California, and the Maritimes, and as close as Ottawa and Toronto. See you all in 2011! Keep this day free and mark you calendars now. 2010: First Ferrari Owners’ Club International Meeting Circuit Paul Ricard httt La courbe de Signes, le double droit du Beausset, la ligne droite du Mistral ... these names are evocative of one of the greatest race tracks of all time. A place where an important page of Ferrari history was written exactly 20 years ago. Frenchman Alain Prost took his Ferrari to victory in the Grand Prix de France on the Paul Ricard race track at the Castellat and scored Ferrari’s 100th Grand Prix victory. S omeone called out as I rode past. "Wouldn't you rather be in your Ferrari?" “Not this weekend!” I replied. George Henne ~~~ We met at the break of dawn on the CNE grounds – nine intrepid riders representing the Ferrari Club of America in the 3rd Annual Ride-to-Conquer-Cancer. Together we raised over $33,000, contributing to the $16M+ raised by more than 4000 riders participating in the 2-day, 220km ride from Toronto to Niagara Falls on June 12–13. into the distance soon after the start. Paul also went missing. We learned later that he had been delayed by two flats but helped by a technical support team. No worries, as a veteran rider, he joined up with two good friends and finished the ride in good time. I also represented “Team Pauline”, Don and Greg rode to support Marilyn, Bob in memory of his father, and many others with personal stories to tell. The remaining six riders managed to stay together despite some urges to make breaks and similar urges to give chase. Our team jerseys (featuring the new 458 Italia) drew attention from other riders, resulting in discussions about the cars and their mystique. We met many individuals and teams along the route. The day one course was made somewhat difficult by a number of hilly sections. However we managed to avoid most of the rain falling in the area and all members arrived safely in Hamilton. After a slow careful start we settled down to day one, a 105km ride to Mohawk College Campus in Hamilton. My first thought…..impressive organization! Police or volunteers guided us safely through each intersection, medical and technical support vehicles were in close attendance, pit stops were set up every 20-25km along the entire route, providing food, drink, and facilities. Given the choice of a hotel bed or a shared pup tent in the “Tent City” set up at Mohawk College, we all elected for the hotel. Paula and the Priestmans supplied wine and snacks for an informal team meeting with wives and supporters. George organized a very pleasant dinner at the hotel and the group agreed (reluctantly on my part) to a 6:45am gathering in the morning in preparation for day-2. Somehow we lost Keith and Cynthia very early - apparently under the impression this was a race, they disappeared Returning to Mohawk early on day two we enjoyed a surprisingly good breakfast, collected our bikes, and set off with- Photo by Paula Knopf At the Break of Dawn page 16 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer Summer 2010 Photo by Gail Priestman Greg Ambrose, George Henne, Bob Priestman, Don Ambrose, Keith Griffith, Rodney Ellis hospital after my by-pass surgery last year before the Ride and rode with me last year to make sure I made it. The route was easier than day one and weather much improved. Again we regrouped at the pit stops and the six who had managed to stay together throughout the ride crossed the finish line in Niagara led by Team Leader Don. We smiled and waved to the supportive crowd. Somehow we really became a team at that moment. We had ridden 220km, brought together in support of a cause that has affected many of us personally. I smiled outwardly and cried a little inwardly remembering hopes and fears, hoping we have helped make a difference, helped someone somewhere to smile. Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America It was great to be at my first Ferrari event where speeding tickets were not an issue, though I admit to passing a police officer at 15 km over the limit at one point. Our team, with its white jerseys, stood out from the crowd. We often rode together as a group, sometimes hooking up as a line of six riders in the left lane. "Hey! We've just been passed by a bunch of Ferraris!" was the comment from one group as we went past. As you ride, you swap stories with your teammates and other riders: you realize that this event really does make a difference for many people. No one's life is untouched by cancer; everyone has an experience. This ride covers the annual cancer research budget for Princess Margaret Hospital, one of the top 5 in the world. Being on the ride connects you with this: you really feel you have done something. George Henne We all made it, no accidents or serious breakdowns, great Northern Prancer page 17 getting to know everyone! The spontaneous afternoon wine and cheese was a great part of the event. All day Saturday it seemed to be raining everywhere – but not on us. Six of us managed to stick together throughout the ride and crossed the finish line as one group. That was really special. Biggest impression? – The incredible work by all the volunteers in managing the streets and the rest stops. Next year we’d like to see many more FCA members join our team on this exciting and gratifying weekend. Cynthia Struthers ~~~ I’d like to sincerely thank the FCA and all the people within and outside the Club who so generously supported our riders and enabled us to surpass our goal with $33,400 raised to help conquer cancer. In addition to the nine on our team, we also met up with Mark Franklin, already committed to supporting another team, and Jeff Moore, a new FCA member from Burlington who promises to ride with our team in 2011. Keith Powell and Cynthia Struthers Keith Powell ~~~ Almost everyone is affected by cancer in their lifetime, and most people feel helpless in face of this difficult disease. The ride empowers individuals into action in an amazing effort to help themselves, loved ones and even strangers to prevent, cope, survive and even thrive with cancer. But I'm getting ahead of myself. This year's spring cruise was a tour of the small towns to the west and south of Ottawa. A small but enthusiastic group of drivers and wives turned out on May 23rd to see what Ottawa's Padrone dell'Itinerario had devised for their gustatorial and driving pleasure this time. The sea of red Ferraris was jarringly split by a silver Mercedes. The sole black Ferrari has a soul of rossa, so it doesn't count. We all oohed and aahed as Dominic lowered the Merc's hardtop with the press of a button. The roof retracted and folded away with an amazing articulation of bars, panels and linkages. Dominic's excuse for leaving his 360 at home? Eager to put more miles on the Merc and comfort. The group gathered at the Deifenbunker at 9 am. While many of the Northern Prancer readers may remember it from last year's Rodney Tour, many may not be familiar with Canada's only active underground museum. It's a neat place to visit. However it was not the focus of the group this year. After everyone had arrived, we headed north through the “Carp twisties”: five kilometers of swooping and undulating curves along the Carp Ridge. From there, the group headed to Pakenham and the single lane Five Span Bridge. The next leg was a wonderfully smooth country road to Almonte; curiously named after the Spanish General who I'm pretty sure never made it to the deep darkest woods of Ontario. We celebrated the founding of the town by stopping at that Canadian indicator of civilization: Tim Hortons. From there the group wound through Appleton, Prospect, Stapledon, Richmond, Mills Corners, Baxters Corners, North Gower and finally Manotick. Now we've arrived at La Piazza so I can tell you about our wonderful meal, atmosphere and tour of Ferne D'Addario's glass artisan studio. What? You thought it was all about the lunch? There you go, I hear you wondering about those nefarious connections again. Bounder Magazine is a new magazine for men. Based out of Ottawa, the magazine features articles about cars, fishing, garages, cigars and all things important to men. You won't find questionnaires about your compatibility with your partner of the moment, nor will you find recipes for those “oh so good for you” avocados that you could share with your spouse. The launch party was held at Loch March golf course on the Carp Ridge. Peter Evans, Chris Fox, Giuseppe Castrucci, Hagen Hohn, Natalie St. Aubin, Marco Mariani and Manfred Schlesiger made the trek and suffered through such indignities as free beer, air conditioned lounge, burgers on the patio and Ferraris on the grass. I wanted to park on the putting green but it was in use by the ladies auxiliary, so we parked just beside it, where our hot engines undoubtedly burned Ferrari shaped dead spots in the grass. Did I mention the free beer? Apparently, Hogsback, a new brewery, also starting out in Ottawa, took the opportunity to give away free beer. hrough some no doubt nefarious connections, Giuseppe Castrucci was asked if he could provide some Ferraris for the Bounder Magazine Launch Party. Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America Northern Prancer page 23 The First Drive of the Season: Destination Tamahaac Club, Ancaster May 16, 2010 by Jenelle Ross and Richard Taylor Carol and Rob decided to start their route at the Tim Hortons on Dundas, just east of the 403 - great highway access for everyone, no matter which direction you come from. A group of us thought it would be good to convoy to the meeting place – the Reids in their 400; the Hyatts in their 308; the Corys in their Ford GT and your authors. Something didn’t seem right ... Rick Cory was late. Rick missed the Shell Station where we were meeting. We heard his car go by and Jimmy was fast on the phone to tell Rick to turn around... we hit the 407 in fine formation and arrived “on time”. The parking lot was quite the scene ... about 30 cars. In addition to the Ferraris there were two Maseratis, a Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren, a Lamborghini, and a Ford GT. This event being the first of the driving season, there was a real buzz in the parking lot as there was a lot of catching-up with friends and meeting new ones. Rob and Carol were finally able to get the attention of the participants for a drivers’ / navigators’ meeting. We had our instructions and were ready to head out. The sight and sound of the assembled cars readying to get on the road, was spectacular. We enjoyed the drive ... through idyllic country-side, the lake shore in Burlington, weaving our way through Hamilton, and up the escarpment to our final destination. The weather page 24 Ferrari Club of America continued to cooperate, bright and sunny but not too hot; perfect driving conditions, especially for the older models, cool enough to be comfortable. Photo by Jim Hyatt arol and Rob Bernacci took on a lot – planning and executing their first (and we hope the first of many) event for the East and Central Canada Region of FCA. The drive, the location and the lunch were first class all the way! Both Carol and Rob were a little anxious – after all it was the first event they had planned and the day was upon them. They had driven the route numerous times to ensure clear directions, that no impassable construction had popped up overnight and that the Tim Hortons chosen for the assembly point and the pit-stop had excellent parking with low curbs. All was a go. Now only the weather needed to cooperate. Sunday May 16, 2010 was a beautiful late spring morning – clear blue sky, a light breeze and a freshness in the air (that is to say, those with jackets and sweaters were smart!). What a great drive! What a great destination - The Tamahaac Club in Ancaster - once a hunt club, now a beautiful venue complete with forest, winding driveway, stately clubhouse, and a breath taking view from the escarpment. To the north and east .... we could see the Toronto skyline. The staff had prepared a wonderful lunch ... an array of hot and cold buffet items, dessert and coffee. Special thanks go to Richard and his crew, who were able to accommodate ten late registrations. Wine was generously supplied by Steven Kreiger of Barton Auto Parts in Hamilton, who is also sponsoring Rob and Carol’s Ferrari for the Hospital for Sick Children fund raiser, the Yorkville Exotic Car Show.. The projected rain was a no-show - the track was dry. In attendance were a slew of both vintage and modern Ferrari and Maserati’s with their proud owners, including a 16M, 308s, 328s, 430 Scuderia, 599 GTB, GranTurismo S and Quattroporte. Ferrari of Ontario was present to transport a few Ferrari’s for Michael Louli and also to provide technical support. This is an biannual event where those with a passion and horsepower can indulge in a safe and exciting driving environment, while having the expertise of a professional instructor at their side. The drivers are split into three groups: Via for the novice, Scuola for the intermediate to advanced and Piloti for advanced lapping plus an Istruttore (Instructor) group for all those volunteers who provide instruction for the participants. There was an opportunity during the lunch period, called Family Touring, to bring along a friend or family member for a ride to feel the excitement and experience of being on a challenging race track. Throughout the day there were opportunities to drive page 26 Ferrari Club of America at the designated Skid Pad area to feel and test the limits of yourself and your car. Derek Hanson, Chief Track Instructor, stated “This event is all about car control, which relates to safe driving habits on public roads. Driving at your very best is an art form as well as a science and at this school we do both, which will result in extracting all the finer tributes engineered into car safety.” John Burnett, Instructor, commented that “everyone should take a school” because you learn skills that can save yourself from an accident. The East and Central Canada Region uses the proven FCA Driving School format that enhances driving skills and maximizes enjoyment while maintaining a safe and controlled driving environment. Normally only FCA members could attend this event, but Evan Friedman, Track Chair, allows any Ferrari or Maserati owner the opportunity to participate so as to introduce this extraordinary experience to like minded enthusiasts. Nick Tintor, who owns a Quattroporte Sport GT-S, found Northern Prancer Summer 2010 his first experience educational and found that he was able to learn cornering in an exciting and safe environment and test and push the limits of his vehicle. Nick says he would do it again and looks forward to the next track day. Many thanks go out to all that donated their time and assistance to make the day a huge success, which includes (in no particular order); Derek Hanson, Chief Track Instructor and cigar aficionado; Dr. Evan Friedman, Track Chair; Lucas Scarfone (Scarfone Automotive Photography) for the pics. and all the staff, volunteers, and Summer 2010 Ferrari Club of America support people. Northern Prancer page 27 Julie & Richard Cory’s 5th Annual Ferrari Drive in Support of Cancer Research O nce again Richard and I were feeling a little stressed before our drive this year. The weather forecast was not showing a beautiful sunny day with warm temperatures; instead, it was showing rain, thunderstorms and lightning. Much to our surprise we only experienced a few showers driving north on the 404. Everyone who registered assembled at the Petro-Canada station just east of the 404 on 16th Avenue in Markham. Although, it was not raining just yet, we were really surprised to see Jim Hyatt pull into the Petro-Canada Station in his BMW. We said to Jim “Oh no, what happened to the Ferrari” - and Jim was lost for words! He tried to blame it on Bob who also came in a BMW. At the end of the day Jim ended up with a parking ticket on his car. That’s what you get for bringing a BMW to a Ferrari Event. We had 20 Ferrari’s show up at the gas station. We saw lots of wide-eyed Petro-Canada customers and employees who were quite amazed with the sight and sound of these beautiful cars. We drove by the Briars Resort and would enter the next entrance to the Briars Summer Cottage where we would then park our cars. The weather was breaking and the sun was now shining upon us and the temperature was pleasant, making it very comfortable to mingle and catch up with our friends in the club. Around 1:00pm we were called in to be seated for lunch. We all enjoyed a buffet with a generous assortment of Italian cuisine. The Briars Cottage House is Photo by Julie Cory At 11:00am – Richard called a drivers meeting, giving out instructions and maps were distributed. The route would take us up Highway 404 to the end, then a quick jog over to Warden and continue north. From there on, it was a straight run through beautiful countryside until we reached Pollock Road. Richard and I made sure that we collected everyone in the group before this tricky turn. Once we checked that everyone was together and accounted for, we continued our drive towards the scenic south shore of Lake Simcoe. As we were getting closer to the water, it was wonderful to see the boats out in Cook’s Bay. In attendance was Marco Mattiacci, the newly appointed CEO of Ferrari North America. The Ferrari 458 Italia represents a genuine evolution of Maranello’s mid-rear engine V8 sports cars. As with every new Ferrari the 458 Italia is full of innovation from company’s racing experience and expertise. Employing the same techniques and methods used to develop the Scuderia’s F1 cars, Ferrari’s engineers concentrated on obtaining maximum efficiency in fuel consumption and C02 emissions and succeeded by setting the benchmark in this segment with fuel economy of 13.3 l/100 km and 307 g/km respectively. The new five litre V8 engine offers a boost in power and performance from the pervious 4.3 litre engine, pushing out 560 horsepower, and sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in under 3.4 seconds with a maximum top speed of over 325 km/h (202 mph). There have been significant improvements in the interior with the steering wheel and instrument cluster, mainly in the ergonomics and how they relate between the driver and car. page 30 Ferrari Club of America The main commands are grouped on the steering wheel, with the secondary controls located in two “satellite pods” on either side of the dash. Instrument displays are on the panel ahead of the driver. All previous steering-column mounted stalks have been eliminated. The signals and windshield wiper functions are now activated by buttons on the steering wheel. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth connectivity, satellite navigation, digital speedometer and a rear parking camera. Price starts at $279,000 Cdn. and of the 12 to 15 Italia’s coming, all are spoken for in 2010.
