It is so hard to believe that February and March are here. I keep thinking how wonderful this
year has been so far. Our 8th graders are working hard knowing that everything they are doing is
helping them prepare for high school and the 7th graders are no longer the new students but are
fully immersed in our daily routines here at SRMS. There is still a full quarter of school left and
it is so important that everyone finishes strong.
There are many things to look forward to in the upcoming months. Multi- Cultural Week will
take place starting Feb. 16 and will culminate with the Multi-Cultural Dinner on Friday, Feb. 19.
All week long, our students will be able to listen to and see people from other cultures. Friday
Night Multi-Cultural Dinner is a special event for the whole community. There will be foods
from around the world offered at reasonable prices with an evening of free entertainment. The
event starts at 5:30 on Friday, Feb. 19. Please join us!
Also in February is 6th Grade Orientation Night. This event is on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Our 7th
and 8th grade students will have a minimum day with school dismissed at 12:30. Starting at 6:30
PM in the gym, parents and families of future 7th graders are invited to the gym to listen to a
description of our school. Following this, classrooms and teachers will be available to share more
information about each subject area. Please make sure to pass this information along to current
6th graders interested in coming to our school.
I am so grateful to be a part of this special school community. We have staff members committed
to helping students, making connections with them and making sure they are successful. We
have a fantastic parent community who is supportive of all that is happening here. Finally, we
have a great group of students that make me smile every day I am here. Thank you everyone for
your support.

Es difícil creer que febrero y marzo están aquí. Sigo pensando en lo maravilloso que este año ha
sido hasta ahora. Nuestros estudiantes de 8vo grado están trabajando duro sabiendo que todo lo
que están haciendo les está ayudando a prepararse para la escuela secundaria y los alumnos de
7mo grado ya no son los nuevos estudiantes, pero están completamente inmersos en nuestra
rutina diaria aquí en SRMS. Todavía queda un trimestre de escuela y es muy importante que
todos terminen fuerte.
Hay muchas cosas que esperamos con interés en los próximos meses. Semana Multi-Cultural se
lleva a cabo el 16 de febrero y culminará con la Cena Multicultural el viernes, 19 de febrero.
Durante toda la semana, nuestros alumnos serán capaces de escuchar y ver a la gente de otras
culturas. La cena por la noche Multi-Cultural es un evento especial para toda la comunidad.
Habrá alimentos de todo el mundo con precios razonables y entrada gratis. El evento comienza a

Estoy muy agradecido de ser parte de esta comunidad de la escuela especial. Tenemos miembros

We want all students to be safe, responsible and respectful here
at Santa Rosa Middle School. However, we realize that conflicts
do occur. When a student has a conflict with another person,
he or she should let someone know about it. Parents, teachers,
counselors, and administrators are all people that students can
come to when they have a problem. Please encourage your son
or daughter to use these people as a resource to help solve
problems here at school.
Queremos que todos los estudiantes estén seguros, responsables
y acertados aquí en Santa Rosa Middle School. Sin embargo,
realizamos que los conflictos debidos ocurren. Cuando un
estudiante tiene un conflicto con otra persona, él o ella deberían

Students walking and riding bicycles to school need to be aware
of traffic. Please remind your children to look
carefully when crossing streets and not to
assume that drivers are watching out for
them. Also, if adults are harassing or
bothering someone on the way to school or after school, the
student should come to the office immediately so police can be
called.

ser conscientes del tráfico. Por favor recordar a sus hijos a

This is a reminder to all students and parents that students
should not bring personal electronic devices to school. IPods
and other personal music devices should be left at home. If they
are brought to school, these devices should not be
used during the school day. Like cell phones,
electronic devices should be turned off and in their
lockers until after school.

Respect and responsibility are taught and modeled throughout
the day. Every day our students listen to a message on what it
means to be a responsible, caring person. We want our students
to understand that they have choices in the world and that they
can choose to make good choices every day.

This year all students will be tested with the Smarter Balanced
Assessment Test which will start after Spring Break. Students
will be using computers to take this test and will be tested in
English and Mathematics. 8th graders will also be tested in
Science on the California Standards Tests which will be given
between April 8th and April 30th.

Santa Rosa Middle School Prepares for Emergencies
Santa Rosa Middle School has a plan in place to deal with a variety of emergencies. We work with local
emergency agencies including Santa Rosa Police to evaluate and update our emergency plans. It is very
important that each student’s Emergency Card is kept up to date with so that we may know to whom we
may release your child in case of emergency. Our Student Release area is at the gate on 5 th street on the
south side of the campus between rooms 67 and 68.
Please plan to pick up your student ONLY from the 5 th St. gate. In order for our staff to maintain records of
who has been picked up, we must not have any student taken from the campus except from that gate. We
are trying to avoid a chaotic exodus from the site.
In the event of a major emergency, there are things you can do to help us to be prepared. Talk with your
child about who is on the Emergency Card you have turned in to the office. Tell your child to wait for the
Student Release process to take place and follow the directions of the staff at school. You and your child
will feel more secure knowing students will be kept safely at school until a parent or designated person is
able to pick them up.

Santa Rosa Middle School tiene un plan para a variedad de situaciones de emergencia. Trabajamos con las

por otra entrada excepto a partir de esa puerta. Estamos tratando de evitar un éxodo caótico en el sitio.
En el caso de una emergencia, hay cosas que usted puede hacer para ayudarnos a estar preparados. Hable
con su hijo/hija acerca de quién está en el tarjeta de emergencia que se han convertido en la oficina. Dígale

Dear Parents and Guardians;
Santa Rosa Middle School is continuously working to
improve our ability to serve the needs of our students in
the event of a disaster. We have been building our
stores of supplies to care for our students in case of
such an event; tools to evacuate trapped students,
medical supplies, restroom facilities, games, food and
water supplies.
We would like you to consider this list of needs for our
emergency bin. These items are all items recommended
by Homeland Security and other organizations specializing in emergency preparation.
Some of these items may be found lying about your home unused and or all purchases
are tax deductible. Supplies can be delivered to the school’s front office. Please identify
the items as deliverable to Jackie Crow.
Thank you for supporting our efforts in preparing for your student’s needs in the event
of a disaster.

9. Honesty is expected. No cheating, plagiarism,
or collusion will be tolerated.
10. No harassment of any kind will be tolerated.

and any unwelcome aggressive behavior.

COUNSELING CORNER
Happy New Year! The majority of school holidays are now
past. The next few months will be packed full of academics
and activities as 8th graders prepare to become high schoolers
and our 7th graders work hard to become the leaders on the
SRMS campus.
We encourage you and your student to seek our services.
Students can drop into the counseling office before school, at
break or after school as well as receiving permission from
their teachers, during class time, to come to our office.
Students can also leave notes for us with our secretary in the
counseling office. Parents can reach us by phone at 5285397. We work with students on all social, emotional, and
academic areas.
Student Change of Address and Email Notification
So much mail comes back to SRMS every
month due to change of addresses. If you
are in the process of moving, have recently
moved or if you have a phone number or
email change, please call Sheila in the
Counseling Office, 528-5397 as soon as possible. We know
that you want to stay informed of your student’s
education and we rely on the mail and phone system to
communicate with you.
6th Grade Orientation Night
Come see and explore Santa Rosa Middle School. SRMS
will be hosting our 6th Grade Orientation Night on
February 10th at 6:30 pm in the gym. All students and
parents of potential SRMS Cougars are invited. A brief
introduction to SRMS will begin the evening and will be
followed by introductions to the various department chairs,
counselors, administrators and various leadership kids
currently attending SRMS. It is a wonderful night where
incoming 6th graders and their parents can feel a part of the
SRMS family.
Registration for 2016-2017 School Year
SRMS Counselors are working hard to get
ready for next year. We have found that the
earlier we organize the registration process, the more
smoothly the process goes. Current 7 th graders will be given
elective packets through their English teacher on March 1,
2016. These completed forms are due back to their
English teachers by March 4th. If students do not turn in
their elective sheet, counselors will be forced to choose an
elective for the student.
ATTENTION ALL 7TH GRADE PARENTS
If your child has been attending Santa Rosa Middle School
this year on either an INTER or INTRA-District Transfer,
you MUST re-apply for next year, 2015-2016. If you do not
reapply for this Special Permission, your student will be
automatically dropped from our rolls for next year!
Forms are available in the Counseling Office. They must be
completed and returned FIRST to your child’s school of
residence and then to SRMS.
If you applied online for Permanent Open Enrollment,
you do NOT need to reapply for the Special Transfer
noted above. If you have questions, please call the
Counseling Office at 528-5397.
ATTENTION ALL 8TH GRADE PARENTS
If your 8th grader has been attending SRMS on an
INTER or INTRA-District Special Permission
Transfer AND you want your child to attend
Santa Rosa High School as a 9th grader, you
MUST reapply for this Special Permission. If your student
has been attending SRMS on an OPEN Enrollment basis, you
do NOT need to reapply. Without an approved transfer, you
must register your student at your high school of residence.
Forms are available in the Counseling Office or at any SRCS
High School/Middle School. The forms need to be
completed and returned, for approval, first to your
child’s high school of residence, then to your high school
of choice.
Tips for Parents on How to Academically
Support Their Student
It is our aim to inform parents/guardians as early as possible
if their students are in need of interventions and additional
support. Every six weeks or so, a grade report is generated
for students. If your child is receiving a C- or below in any
class, he/she will receive an Interim Progress Report alerting
you of this fact. In addition, all students receive Quarter
Grades which, again, will alert you if there is a grade issue
that can be ameliorated before the end of the semester.
Remember, only Semester Grades are recorded on your
child’s permanent transcript.
Agendas: Every student at SRMS receives an agenda at the
beginning of the school year. The agenda should be used
every day to write down the daily assignments in their
classes. Parents can check this agenda nightly to make sure
the assignments are being written down and can check the
work their students have done. If you are concerned that the
assignments are not being written down, you can ask your
student to have each teacher initial the agenda daily. This
way the teacher can check for accuracy and open
a dialogue with the student.
Weekly Progress Reports: The counseling
office supplies students with daily and weekly
progress reports. These reports give the student
and the parent a picture of how the student is doing both
academically and behaviorally in class. We recommend
NOT waiting for a six-week grading report. This item also
opens dialogue with the teacher.
Homework Hot Line: Teachers have set up their voice mail
system to give students and parents a list of homework due
during the week. This is a great way to check the accuracy
of agendas as well as informing students of assignments when
they miss school due to illness or personal necessity. The
teacher numbers are enclosed in this Newsletter.
Teacher Voice Mail: Every teacher has voice mail. If you
have a question or concern about your student in a particular
class, please leave a message for the teacher
and he/she will call you back. Many teachers
will also give you an email address to utilize.
Ask the teacher if this is an option.
Home Access Center: If you have not already done so, you
can register for the Home Access Center on the main Santa
Rosa City School’s website at www.srcs.k12.ca.us. If you
have any questions, please call Sheila at 528-5397.
Parent/Teacher/Counselor Meeting: Students sometimes
struggle with the transition to middle school. Being an
adolescent is a hard job; the job which can be harder is that
of being parent to an adolescent. Many parents feel lost and
“out of the loop” when their students become more
independent. If you need help, call the counselors and we
will work with you and your student through this awkward
time.
Grading Period: Parents receive grade reports
from teachers every six weeks.
These reports are mailed home.
Below are important grading dates.
Students who are in danger of failing any
course, receive a mailed Interim Progress
Report. The mailing dates are February 12 and April 22.
Third Quarter grades are distributed on March 16.

Computers and Cell Phones
At SRMS, we understand technology plays a increasing role
in our student's social and academic lives. Many of our
students own an electronic device and we understand the
value in having students learn to use a cell phone/computer.
However, we would like families to please help educate
their child how to be a responsible cyber-citizen. Here are a
few ideas:

Limit your child’s computer use. Set specific hours when it
is OK to use the computer.
Monitor your child’s computer “history” to see the websites
they are visiting.
Limit texting and, again, review your child’s phone history.
Set aside specific times when all devices are turned off (e.g.,
dinner time) and you and your child can speak to each other
uninterrupted.
Talk with your child about texting and computer abuse and
what the consequences can be for the victims. Teach your
child about empathy.
We get from our children what we expect and what we model
in our own behavior. The use and abuse of technology is too
pervasive to neglect our children's behavior. For more ideas

Feliz Año Nuevo! La mayor parte de las vacaciones
escolares se ha pasado. Los próximos meses se llena de
actividades académicas y los estudiantes del 8vo grado se
preparan para convertirse en estudiantes de la secundaria y
nuestros estudiantes del 7 º grado trabajaran duro para
convertirse en los líderes aquí en SRMS.
Le animamos a usted y a su estudiante a buscar nuestros

automáticamente eliminado de nuestra es cuela para el

como estudiante de noveno, usted TIENE que volver a
solicitar este permiso especial. Si no se vuelva a aplicar, su
hijo automáticamente se regresara a su escuela de
residencia. Si su hijo ha estado asistiendo a SRMS en forma
de inscripción abierta, NO es necesario volver a aplicar. Sin
transferencia de la aprobación, debe registrar su estudiante
en su escuela secundaria de residencia.

Correo de voz : Cada maestro tiene correo de voz. Si

1. Limitar el uso de equipo de su hijo. Establecer un

Free the Children Pizza Sales
Every Thursday in February, pizza will be sold after school. Each slice is
$2.00. All proceeds from sales will go towards “FREE the Children”, a non-profit
organization that helps less fortunate families that live in areas of poverty overseas.
Every $50.00 or 4 pizzas sold, gives a goat to a family, providing nutritious milk and
sustainable income for years to come. Help “FREE the Children” empower 25,000
families with the resources to support their children and take charge of their future.
Student Store
Every Tuesday and Wednesday the student store is open. Students can purchase
school supplies, cougar gear, frozen yogurt and Popcorn.
Spirit Friday
February 12 and 26
are Spirit Friday’s. We would like both 7th & 8th
graders to dress in Blue and Gold or Cougar gear. This helps build school spirit
and cougar pride.
Spirit Month
March is Spirit Month. There are 3-dress up days. March 4 is a Spirit Friday,
March 11th is College Sports Rally- students may wear College sports only, NOT
th
Professional sports teams, March 18 is Saint Patrick’s Day Rally and we’d like
students to wear anything that’s a shade of green.
We’re off and running to start the 3rd
Quarter in the Physical Education classes.
Our 7th grade classes have been playing
Badminton, and Golf, and end the quarter with Track
& Field. Our 8th grade classes are in a Hockey unit,
as well as participating in our fitness lab during the
week, and end the quarter with Field Games. All PE
classes do monthly fitness testing to prepare for the
State Physical Fitness Testing during the spring. All
classes also spend one day a week in the classroom
working on Fitness For Life, which is our Health
based curriculum at SRMS. Ask your son/daughter
to see their Sportfolio?
We had a great 1st semester with our students,
introducing them to Speedminton, Pickelball, Frisbee,
Orienteering, Volleyball, Line Dancing, Folk
Dancing, and HOPSPORTS/CARDIO on Mondays.
We also had a lot of fun with the Turkey Trot, where
we gave out 15 Turkeys, 20 Pumpkin Pies, 100 TShirts, 20 Sees Chocolate Turkeys, and numerous
dress passes. 180 students walked away with prizes
that day. Thank you to the families who donated to
this cause.
As we approach the late Winter months, we still have
plenty of sweatshirts and sweatpants that your
son/daughter may purchase. Just have your student
see their PE instructor. If you need to contact the

Nos vamos y en ejecución para iniciar
el 3 º Trimestre en la clases de Educación
Física. Nuestras clases de 7 º grado han
estado jugando al bádminton y golf, y
al final del trimestre con Track & Field.
Nuestras clases de 8 º grado están participando en
la unidad de hockey, así como participando en
nuestro laboratorio físico durante la semana, y con
juegos de campo finales del trimestre. Todas las
clases de educación física toman pruebas
mensuales para prepararse para la Prueba de
Aptitud Física de Estado durante la primavera.
Todas las clases también pasan un día a la semana
en el salón trabajando en la Aptitud Para la Vida,
que es nuestro plan de estudios de salud basado en

Hemos tenido un gran semestre primero con los

7th grade Spanish students are
currently studying probably the most
popular unit; food and health. Of
course, this would not be as popular if it were not supplemented
with trips to Chelinos to order food in Spanish and then eat it!
Thank you to Chelino’s for feeding both our hungry 7th and 8th
graders year after year. We are also wading into the wonders of
Spanish grammar and verb conjugation!
8th graders have finished studying the house and family and are
now on clothing and shopping. Where would vocabulary be
without grammar? So we now reveal to them the wonders of
reflexive and past tense verbs! Remember, two successful years
of middle school Spanish is the equivalent of one year of high
school Spanish, so most 8th graders will be going on to 2nd year
Spanish (Spanish 2). Some will be recommended for Honors
Spanish 2 if they have earned A’s in middle school and shown an
interest in speaking Spanish.
Los estudiantes de séptimo grado están estudiando la unidad

like to eat and how to order in a cafe in
French. This study includes learning new French vocabulary,
grammar and pronunciation.
We are learning the names of
food and drinks in French.
Students are having fun designing
their own menus in
French. When we complete
those, the cafés will be open and
students can visit each other’s, ordering in French, of
course! We have continued to enjoy taking our monthly
field trips to local cafés. In January, we will go to the
SoCo Café which is just around the corner from our
school. The students enjoy ordering food and drinks of
their choice. These fun trips help us to experience
French food and café culture.
8th Grade French class is working on how to give
directions in French. We are studying about how to
talk about cities, small towns and villages. We are also
familiarizing ourselves with major cities in France such
as: Tours, Marseille, Lyon and many others. In addition,
we are learning how to say names of streets, along with
vocabulary for key places within
cities. Furthermore, we are studying the French
vocabulary for rooms in houses and designing our own
homes, while labeling the rooms. We have also learned
new French vocabulary to describe people, places and
things. In January we will go to the SoCo Café for our
monthly filed trip. The students enjoy ordering food
and drinks of their choice. These fun trips help us to
experience French food and café culture.

In 8th grade English/History classes,
students have been moving through
the history of the Revolutionary War
and its aftermath, including the
challenge of creating a viable government.
Students are studying the Articles of Confederation,
its weaknesses, and the problems in the early nation
that prompted the Constitutional Convention. Also
included are an exploration of the first two political
parties, and the conflicts between the Federalists
and Anti-Federalists, as represented by Alexander
Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. Some classes are
working on an activity entitled “Meet the Press”, in
which students take on the role of 17th and 18th
century thinkers, some of whose ideas influenced
the creation of our Constitution, and are then
interviewed by their classmates about the question:
“What is the best form of government?” To go
along with this historical study, several classes
have read novels set during the Revolutionary War,
such as The Fighting Ground, Johnny Tremain, and
My Brother Sam is Dead, or novels whose themes
revolve around the tension between governments
and individual rights, such as The Hunger Games.
Students are keeping reading logs, writing literary
response essays, and participating in class
discussions of themes and connections to the
modern day. Others are working on short and longterm research projects. On the horizon is a study of
Manifest Destiny and Westward Movement;
possible literature include Tom Sawyer or The Call
of the Wild. Others will be reading Shakespeare, or
The Diary of Anne Frank. Throughout their
studies, students in English/history classes are
reinforcing the core academic skills of reading
complex texts closely and deeply, citing evidence
to support their conclusions, both orally and in
writing, and striving to make meaningful
connections between the material and their own
lives. They are making significant progress
towards being ready for high school.

At the beginning of the new semester, many
teachers were taking the opportunity to review the
basics in each class, prior to embarking on a new
unit. The first major unit in the seventh grade
classes for 2016 is a study of the Ancient
Americas. The focus is on America prior to
European exploration, so students will examine
the Olmec, Maya, Aztec and Inca civilizations and
attempt to establish connections to previous units,
and focus in on universal themes of history.
Students will also use the comparison skills to
analyze primary sources about
the fall of the Aztec and Inca
civilization and the involvement
of the Spanish conquistadors.
The literature focus tends towards traditional
stories and legends of the Americas. Most seventh
grade classes will read John Steinbeck’s The Pearl,
which is based on a Mexican folk tale and explore
the theme of good versus evil. The overall idea is
to look at different viewpoints and perspectives.
Upon completion of the Americas, the shift of
history will turn to Europe. For the rest of the
year, history will move in a chronological order in
Europe starting with Ancient Rome,
to Medieval Europe, Renaissance,
Reformation, and Scientific
Revolution. All the while establishing connections
to material already learned.
Drama is working on several things this quarter.
First, we are preparing a scenes from
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to
perform for Sixth Grade Orientation. We are also
embarking on a production of The Wizard of Oz,
to be performed in April.

critically, explain their
answers, persevere in solving
problems and work collaboratively on mathematical
problems.
You may notice that your child is working on more
open-ended mathematics problems. Encourage your
child to explain her thinking as she works through the
problems. To help your student you might want to
remind her of the common problem solving strategies
such as: working backwards, building a model/drawing
a diagram, making lists, solving an easier problem and
guess and check. If your child needs guidance here are
three prompts to help her think through the problems.
1. What do you notice/wonder about the
problem/situation?
2. Is there an answer that would be incorrect? How/Why?
3. What problems/strategies have you been working on in
class? How is this problem
similar/different?

solving the problems instead of solving it

For the beginning of the second half of our school year
students in 8th grade classes have begun the study of
chemistry. In the 7th grade, Ms. Crow’s and Mr.
MacDevitt’s classes are exploring Human Body Systems
and Mrs. Wheatley’s students are investigating the
natural world through the study of Ecology,
Classification and the Plant and Animal Kingdoms.
The 8th grade annual field trip to the Exploratorium in
San Francisco on Tuesday, December 5 th, was a great
success. Thank you to all the parent chaperones and 8 th
grade teachers that helped to make the experience
possible for our students!
Students building robots and using
circuit boards to build radios, alarms,
and strobe lights at Santa Rosa
Middle School? Yes, it's really
happening! Every Tuesday after school until 4 pm,
students are building cool stuff in room 20, with Miss.
Katz. Not only do students learn the basics of circuitry
and its application to real-life, but they also get extra
credit for their science class. There's one catch, only
8th graders can join. Sorry 7th graders! We'll see you
next year in.... Electronics Club!
Help keep students on tract for the second half of the
year! Encourage your student to keep their Science
Binders and Notebooks organized and to use their
Student Planner every day in science class. Science
teachers can be reached by Homework Hotline voice
mail and by District email with any questions or
