La Flèche
La Flèche - Baugé
A landscape of woods and forest, an itinerary connecting two towns boasting a rich and varied heritage, and
ultimately, a river and a tributary in perfect harmony. The redeveloped former railway line offers a familyoriented escape route that will bring you to a clearing, or into the leafy shade. And after all that fresh air, why
not indulge in a spot of cultural tourism?
A bit of history about the former railway line
Until 1887, travel was by stagecoach, and it took five days to get from Baugé to Paris. The railway was built by the Paris-Orléans company in 1884, and the first train arrived in Baugé on 24 th October 1887. The La Flèche-Baugé railway line (extending it as far as Saumur), was taken over by the SNCF from 1938
until 1969. The former railway tracks found a new purpose when they were
redeveloped as green ways, open only to pedestrians, cyclists and riders.
Chateau de Baugé
Both the history and the heritage of the
town of Baugé are astonishing. Its most prestigious witness: the chateau. King
René d’Anjou was responsible for building
this majestic edifice (on the site of ancient
ruins) because he wanted to use it as – a
hunting lodge! Today, the fortress offers an
exceptional backdrop to a touring route fit
for a great spectacle.
La Flèche – from the Zoo to the Prytanée National Militaire (French military school)
The Zoo de la Flèche, stretching over 14 hectares, is home to 1,200 animals of 150 different species, and participates in the European Endangered Species
Programme. The Prytanée military school, with its classical early 17 th century
architecture, is one of the most prestigious establishments in the French
educational system, and is one of six military secondary schools on French
soil
The Apothecary of Baugé
The apothecary is a must-see on any tour of the Hôtel-Dieu de Baugé- the
town’s hospital, founded in 1643 and still in service until 2000. This hospital
dispensary still has all its walnut and oak furniture, in the Louis XIII style.
