When you choose local products, you’re choosing to please your taste buds.
When harvested at its peak, food has a richer flavour, and is better-tasting
and more nutritious.
The Haut-Saint-François
SADC’s mission is to
promote and support local
economic development
throughout the area.
We provide support and
guidance to self-employed
workers and businesses in
setting up and carrying out
their projects. For more

When you purchase from a local producer, you can ask questions that will
influence the production of the food we all consume. Your choice also has
an impact on fair income for local producers, enabling their livelihoods and
businesses to survive. It also helps them to continue to provide food for
the surrounding population.
Investing in Our Economy
In Quebec, the average family consumes approximately $8000 of
food products in one year, but less than one-half of these products
are from Quebec.
An increase of just 1% in sales in the Quebec food industry would
lead to the creation of 1800 jobs in our region.
According to a statistic provided by Agri-Réseaux, if each Quebecker
were to replace $30 worth of products that come from elsewhere
by products grown in Quebec, this would create a one billion dollar
profit over five years, and would create tens of thousands of jobs.
Protecting the Environment
Even though our environment is increasingly toxic, we are fortunate
to still be able to control the quality of the food we eat!
Bringing producers and consumers closer together reduces energy
consumption related to transportation, storage and marketing,
and thus reduces our impact on air pollution and climate change.
Local products need less packaging in their journey from the farm
to our plate, which also reduces waste.
This directory promotes producers who register
on a free and voluntary basis.

Fruits and Vegetables
Eat Local, Eat Organic
By purchasing locally, you are
choosing recently harvested food,
which increases its nutritional value.
When fruits and vegetables are harvested at peak maturity, they are
able to reach their full vitamin potential with greater concentrations
of vitamin C, folic acid (vitamin
B9), polyphenols and antioxidants.
When you choose organic products,
you are choosing food that is free
from pesticides, GMOs and chemical products. Also, they generally
use less irrigation which means their
juices are more concentrated for
enhanced flavour.
4
Agricultural income for fruits and
vegetables in the Haut-Saint-François
is currently at approximately
1.9 million dollars, according to a
MAPAQ study completed in 2010.
Tips for
Eating LOCAL
• Visit farmers’ markets such
as those in Lingwick and
Scotstown
• Buy directly from producers
• Make fruit and vegetable
preserves and freeze them
to keep them longer.
• Make preserves, sauces
and jams

Meat
Superior Quality
With more space than on industrial
farms, animals that are raised ecologically in the region are given more
respect and have a better quality of life.
With regard to organic meat, it offers
a remarkable difference in taste. In
addition to being fed solely with hay,
and organic grain with no hormones
or antibiotics, these animals spend
a large portion of their time outside,
and are slaughtered later in life. Their
meat is therefore more compact and
contains much less fat and water
than conventionally-raised meat.
8
Income from beef, pork, poultry,
sheep, heavy veal calves and fish
farms reached 45.6 million dollars in
2010 according to a MAPAQ study
completed in 2010.

Dairy Products
Essential Nutritional Elements
Many studies have shown that dairy
products can help reduce the risk
of certain diseases such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis and colorectal cancer.
Vitamin A
Helps in the development of teeth
and bones. Also contributes to
maintaining good night vision
and healthy skin.
Calcium
Stimulates the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones.
Vitamin D (added to milk)
Improves the absorption of calcium
and phosphorus, which the solidity
of bones and healthy teeth depend on.
Riboflavin
Helps convert food into energy
and tissue regeneration.
proteins
Involved in the formation and repair
of body tissues, including muscles
and bones, while training antibodies
to fight against infections.
14
Zinc
Plays a role in tissue formation, including bones, and transforms food
into energy.
According to MAPAQ statistics, dairy
products in the Haut-Saint-François
net over 22 million dollars, which
is 26% of the agricultural income
of our region in 2010.

Maple Products
Natural and Versatile
Maple syrup contains more minerals
and vitamins than sugar or corn
syrup. As well, a 60 ml portion of
maple syrup (1/4 cup) has antioxidative activity comparable to one
tomato, a serving of broccoli, or
one banana.
The income from maple production in the Haut-Saint-François is
close to 4.5 million dollars (source:
MAPAQ 2010).
