A Step-by-Step Explanation
by Thomas Richstatter, O.F.M. One day my friend Brad, who was interested in be‐
coming Catholic, stopped by my house after attend‐
ing a parish Mass. He wanted to ask some questions about the way we Catholics act in church. “Father,” he observed, “the thing that is most different be‐
tween my former church and your church is that you Catholics always seem to know what is going to happen next! In my church we sit and listen and sing now and then, but in the Catholic liturgy you have to know what to do.” Brad has a good point: We Catholics do “know what is going to happen next.” One of the basic, distinc‐
tive marks of our way of praying is ritual: We do things over and over. When the priest says, “The Lord be with you,” without any thought or hesita‐
tion the congregation responds, “And also with you.” The priest says, “Let us pray,” and the congre‐
gation stands up. Our daily lives have their rituals also: There are set ways of shaking hands, eating with a fork, respond‐
ing to a letter. And when we are accustomed to a certain way of doing things we seldom ask why we do it that way. In the Eucharist, too, we have many ritual actions which we perform without asking why. This “walk‐through” explanation of the Mass in the next several weeks will shed light on why we do what we do at Mass. I think these explanations will be help‐
ful for the great numbers of Catholics who attend Mass regularly but don”t always remember the reasons be‐
hind the various actions of the Mass. They may be es‐

Page Seven 24th Ordinary Sunday CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRF) On Saturday, August 25th, Tropical Storm Isaac hit Haiti, a country who has been trying to recover from the devastating effects of the 2010 earthquake. Rains and winds of 60 miles per hour has greatly affected the infra‐
structure of Haiti and destroyed many of the tents of those who had lost their homes two years ago. Farmers are taking the greatest hit of this storm, as many have lost plantains and other crops in the southeastern region of the country. The storm has also signifi‐
cantly affected the island of Gonave in the Gulf of Gonave. Catholic Relief Services is working closely with our Government of Haiti counterparts and local organizations to determine the damage of the storm and how to best re‐
spond to the country’s needs. As of now, CRS and other public health partners are working together to provide optimal treatment for patients in cholera treatments cen‐
ters since the disease can be worsened with flooding and heavy rains. CRS has been helping the people of Haiti to better prepare for future storms through text messages on safety and evacuation. To date, we have provided emergency food rations for thousands of families and have built 10,600 temporary shelters to with‐
stand storms. Join us in prayer for the families and individuals who are currently af‐
fected by this storm. By continuing to support our work in CRS, we can provide food, medicine and basic supplies to people caught in this natural disaster. tian Community program this fall. Small Christian Communities are made up of 6 to 12 members who meet once a week for 6 weeks to pray and to share the action of God in their lives. Each person shares at a level where he or she feels comfortable. No previous training is needed. The meetings will last about 90 minutes. This coming session is from a booklet called "Why Catholic? Journey through the Cate‐
chism". This session begins the week of September 30th and ends the week before Thanksgiving. The focus of this 6 week session will be "Life in Christ ‐ Walking With God". tual life. September 16, 2012 24th Ordinary Sunday SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 About Catechetical Sunday The ministry of the Word is a fundamental element of evangelization through all its stages, because it involves the proclamation of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God "The word of God nour‐
ishes both evangelizers and those who are being evangelized so that each one may continue to grow in his or her Christian life" Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? In 1935, the Vatican published On the Better Care and Promo‐
tion of Catechetical Education, a document that asks every country to acknowledge the importance of the Church’s teach‐
ing ministry and to honor those who serve the Christian com‐
munity as catechists. For the first few years after Catechetical Sunday was established, national catechetical congresses were held in conjunction with the celebration. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated the third Sun‐
day in September as Catechetical Sunday. What Does the Word “Catechetical” Mean? The word might be more familiar than you think. Many Catho‐
lics have used the word "catechism" for years, and they know it has something to do with the compendium of the Church's teachings. The root word, "catechesis," is from a Greek word meaning "to echo, or resound." Catechesis is the act of re‐
sounding or bringing the Church's teachings to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of the Church. Why do we have a special day set aside to commission cate‐
chists? Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life . . . her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (no. 7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our respon‐
sibility to share our faith with others. How are parents, the primary catechists of their children, recognized on Catechetical Sunday? Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechet‐
ical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. This is why the rite of blessing of catechists used on Catechetical Sunday includes an optional blessing of parents and guardians. Page Eight THISWEEK

Arcybiskup Metropolita Gdański Sławoj Leszek Głódź Abp Sławoj Leszek Głódź urodził się 13 sierpnia 1945 roku w Bobrówce (Arch. Białostocka). W 1964 roku rozpoczął studia w Białostockim Seminarium Duchownym, skąd w trzecim roku nauki powołano go na pełne dwa lata do wojska. Służbę wojskową odbył w jednej z utworzonych wówczas kompanii kleryckich w 32 Budziszyńskim Pułku Zmechanizowanym w Kołobrzegu oraz Mazurskiej Brygadzie Saperów w Szczecinie‐
Podjuchy. Święcenia kapłańskie otrzymał 14 czerwca 1970. Po święceniach pracował duszpastersko w Szudziałowie na Białostocczyźnie i w Paryżu wśród Polonii. Studia kanoniczne odbył w Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim. Doktoryzował się w Rzymie w zakresie prawa kanonicznego Katolickich Kościołów Wschodnich. W okresie od marca do grudnia 1980 roku był pracownikiem nadzwyczajnym Synodu Biskupów w Rzymie. Następnie pracował w Kurii Arcybiskupiej i Sądzie Arcybiskupim w Białymstoku. Jednocześnie był dyrektorem studium katechetycznego. W 1981 roku był kapelanem "Solidarności" Regionu Białystok. Od września 1981 roku rozpoczął pracę w Watykanie, w Kongregacji ds. Kościołów Wschodnich. 8 września 1984 roku otrzymał godność Prałata Jego Świątobliwości. 21 stycznia 1991 roku wraz z ustanowieniem Ordynariatu Polowego w Polsce został mianowany przez Ojca Świętego Biskupem Polowym Wojska Polskiego. 18 kwietnia 1991 roku otrzymał z rąk Prezydenta RP nominację na stopień generała brygady Wojska Polskiego, a 11 listopada 1993 roku na stopień generała dywizji. W uznaniu zasług na polu duszpasterstwa wojskowego Prezydent RP, Lech Wałęsa, w dniu 22 grudnia 1995 roku nadał mu Krzyż Oficerski Polonia Restituta. W 1994 roku Ojciec Święty Jan Paweł II powołał go do grona konsultorów Kongregacji ds. Katolickich Kościołów Wschodnich. Od dnia 2 maja 1995 roku jest delegatem Konferencji Episkopatu Polski do opieki duszpasterskiej nad harcerstwem polskim. 22 stycznia 1998 roku Ojciec Święty Jan Paweł II mianował go członkiem Centralnego Biura do Spraw Koordynacji Duszpasterskiej Ordynariatów Polowych w Kongregacji ds. Biskupów. Postanowieniem Prezydenta RP z dnia 2 listopada 1998 roku został odznaczony Krzyżem Komandorskim z Gwiazdą Orderu Odrodzenia Polski za wybitne zasługi w służbie duszpasterskiej w Wojsku Polskim oraz za działalność społeczną. Jest członkiem Rady Episkopatu Polski do spraw Społecznych oraz Rady do spraw Polonii i Polaków za granicą Konferencji Episkopatu Polski. Uczestniczy w Komisji ds. Stałych Kontaktów Episkopatu Francji i Polski. Był członkiem Krajowego Komitetu Roku Jubileuszowego 2000. Uchwałą Konferencji Episkopatu Polski na 313 Zebraniu Plenarnym w Łowiczu w dniu 22 czerwca 2001 roku został mianowany Krajowym Duszpasterzem Kombatantów. Natomiast w dniu 29 listopada 2001 roku Konferencja Episkopatu Polski na Zebraniu Plenarnym na Jasnej Górze wybrała go na Przewodniczącego Rady ds. Środków Społecznego Przekazu Konferencji Episkopatu Polski. W dniu 21 marca 2002 roku na Zebraniu Plenarnym Konferencji Episkopatu Polski został Przewodniczącym Zespołu Biskupów ds. Duszpasterskiej Troski o Radio Maryja. 320 Zebranie Konferencji Episkopatu Polski na Jasnej Górze w dniu 28 listopada 2002 roku powołało go do Rady Stałej Konferencji Episkopatu Polski. 17 lipca 2004 roku Ojciec Święty Jan Paweł II ‐ w uznaniu pracy i dokonań ‐ podniósł go do godności Arcybiskupa "ad personam". Dnia 26 sierpnia Jego Świątobliwość Jan Paweł II mianował Księdza Arcybiskupa "ad personam" ordynariuszem Diecezji Warszawsko‐Praskiej. Z Arcybiskupem Metropolitą Gdańskim Tadeuszem Gocłowskim współdziałał m.in. w Komisji Wspólnej Rządu RP i Konferencji Episkopatu Polski oraz w Zarządzie Fundacji Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia. 17 kwietnia 2008 r. Ojciec Święty Benedykt XVI mianował Księdza Arcybiskupa ‐ Metropolitą Gdańskim. Urzeczywistnienie Miłosierdzia Bożego – Sakrament Ołtarza
„Kościół otrzymał Eucharystię od Chrystusa, swojego Pana, nie jako jeden z wielu cennych darów, ale jako dar największy, ponieważ jest to dar z samego siebie, z własnej osoby w jej świętym człowieczeństwie, jak też dar Jego dzieła zbawienia...” (Jan Paweł II Ecclesia de Eucharistia, II). Eucharystia jest dziełem najwyższej miłości Pana Jezusa, jako człowieka, koroną wszystkich dzieł Jego – jakoby wielkim systemem słonecznym, w którym miłość wszystko porusza, dosięga swoimi promieniami końca wieków i sprowadza wszystkie stworzenia na świetlaną drogę, wiodącą do Boga. „Było to przed świętem Paschy. Jezus widząc, że nadeszła Jego godzina przejścia z tego świata do Ojca, umiłowawszy swoich na świecie, do końca ich umiłował (J. 13,1).” Zawsze On z nami zostaje i gotów nas przyjąć na posłuchanie, zawsze się modli za nami do Ojca niebieskiego, zawsze rozważa doskonałość Jego, wychwala je w imieniu naszym, wielbi, uniża się – zawsze dziękuje za nas, błaga o przebaczenie grzechów naszych, zadośćczyni i wynagradza Mu za nie – zawsze się ofiarowuje za nas jako Pośrednik i zasłania nas przed ciosami sprawiedliwości. I gdy jedna półkula ziemska pogrążona jest we śnie, na drugiej półkuli kapłani trzymają w rękach swoich ofiarę za grzechy świata. W ten sposób Ojciec niebieski ma przed oczyma swoimi nieustannego Pośrednika, zasłaniającego świat przed karami sprawiedliwości. Eucharystia jest więc potwierdzeniem, treścią i rozszerzeniem tego wszystkiego, co stworzyło nieskończone miłosierdzie Boże dla ludzi. Jakże smutno byłoby nam bez Sakramentu Ołtarza. W Kościołach nic by nie przemawiało do serca: świat byłby prawdziwym wygnaniem, bo nie byłoby pociechy w cierpieniach, światła wśród ciemności, rady w wątpliwościach. Tymczasem Przenajświętszy Sakrament zmienia wszystko w radość. Miłosierdzie Boże w Sakramencie Ołtarza wkłada na nas obowiązek najwyższej czci i miłości względem Niego oraz częstego i godnego łączenia się z Chrystusem w Komuni Świętej, jak również nawiedzania Go w Kościołach naszych i odpowiedniego w nich zachowania się. Bądź uwielbiony, miłosierny Boże, Żeś się zniżyć raczył z niebios na tę ziemię. Wielbimy Cię w wielkiej pokorze, Żeś raczył wywyższyć całe ludzkie plemię. O Tajemnico Miłosierdzia Bożego, o Boże litościwy, Żeś raczył opuścić tron nieba, a zniżył się do nędzy naszej, do ludzkiej słabości, Bo nie Aniołom, lecz człowiekowi miłosierdzia trzeba. (Dz. 1746) O Jezu mój, proszę Cię za Kościół cały, udziel mu miłości i światła Ducha swego, daj moc słowom kapłańskim, aby serca zatwardziałe kruszyły się i wróciły do Ciebie, Panie. Panie, daj nam świętych kapłanów, Ty sam ich utrzymuj w świętości. O Boski i Najwyższy Kapłanie, niech moc miłosierdzia Twego towarzyszy im wszędzie i chroni ich od zasadzek i sideł diabelskich, które ustawicznie zastawia na dusze kapłana. Niechaj moc miłosierdzia Twego, o Panie, kruszy i wniwecz obraca wszystko to, co by mogło przyćmić świętość kapłana – bo Ty wszystko możesz. (Dz. 1052) Jezu Ufam Tobie !!! September 16, 2012 24th Ordinary Sunday J Page Twelve eżeli pozwolimy sobie na bezmyślność i rutynę w przeżywaniu Mszy świętej, pozbawimy samych siebie radości i fascynacji największym na tej ziemi darem kochającego Boga. Nigdy w nas nie zakwitnie zachwyt nad tym Darem, jeżeli przestaniemy pielęgnować naszą szukającą zrozumienia miłość do Eucharystii. Jak jednak możemy to uczynić? Spróbujmy poszukać drogi zbliżenia się do tej zdumiewającej Tajemnicy poprzez odwołanie się do doświadczeń z naszego życia. Zakochani mają bliskie ich sercu miejsca, do których lubią razem powracać. Czasami jest to ławka w parku, na której chłopak po raz pierwszy odważył się wziąć dziewczynę za rękę, albo stolik w przemiłej kawiarence, który był świadkiem pierwszych miłosnych zwierzeń. Podobnie ma się rzecz w naszej miłości z Panem Bogiem. On również lubi zapraszać tych, którzy oddają Mu swoje serca, w określone miejsca szczególnego rodzaju. Takim miejscem, gdzie Bóg nas zaprasza na „randkę” jest Msza święta. Wielu ludzi powtarza tego typu formułę: „Nie muszę łazić na jakąś tam Mszę, gdzie kłębią się tłumy, organista fałszywie śpiewa, ksiądz gada o polityce. Nie będę brał udziału w tym cyrku, mogę spotkać Boga gdziekolwiek”. To prawda, że Boga można spotkać wszędzie i człowiek wierzący doświadcza tego w swoim życiu (kiedyś święty Augustyn śpiewał psalm w ubikacji, czym zgorszył swą pobożną matkę), nie warto jednak w imię tego rezygnować z pewnych szczególnych miejsc, gdzie randka z Panem Bogiem ma wyjątkowe znaczenie. Niedzielna Msza jest ulubionym miejscem Pana Boga, kiedy to chce On zasiąść z nami przy odświętnie zastawionym stole, aby wspomnieć i uroczyście przeżyć miłość, jaka nas łączy. Pan Jezus podczas tego spotkanie mówi ze wzruszeniem: „Przypomnij sobie ten dzień, w którym umarłem za ciebie na krzyżu, aby potem zmartwychwstać i otworzyć przed tobą serce, z którego płynie wieczne życie”. Pan przywołuje absolutny początek naszej więzi – wtedy, gdy jeszcze nie było nas na świecie, a On, wydając swe życie na krzyżu, miał przed oczami Ciebie i mnie. Tam dokonało się największe w historii wszechświata wyznanie miłości. Wówczas Bóg odsłonił swe serce. Dzisiaj, gdy przez wiarę, choć nieudolnie i z oporami, podjęliśmy Jego zaproszenie, przywołuje nas, abyśmy weszli w przestrzeń tamtych wydarzeń. Jeszcze raz, niestrudzenie przyprowadza nas pod krzyż, przerywa bieg codziennych czynności, zaskakując swym powrotem jako zmartwychwstała, wiecznie żywa Miłość (por. J 21, 1‐13). Reynolds ([email protected]) Whether you’re a political animal or not (I’m not…) perhaps you’re with me when I say that at least parts of the Republican and Democratic National Conventions these past few weeks made for good TV. Ann Romney (you know, the lady who never worked a day in her life…) looked wonderful and was heartfelt in telling us about her husband, as did/was Michelle Obama in tell‐
ing us about hers. If it’s true that politicians campaign in poetry but govern in prose, then some of that poetry was on display as Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton, and President Barack Obama took to the podium. Still, it’s some‐
thing I heard one of the commentators say as I walked past the TV set that really caught my attention. At least I’m pretty sure it’s something I heard one of the commentators say. And if I got it right, it surprised me in the moment and it still does even now. I have to be careful here in case I got it wrong, but I’m thinking it was during the DNC coverage, and I’m pretty sure it was a female voice (ABC was on, for what it’s worth). Anyway, the voice ob‐
served that a certain topic or point was not at the forefront of the party message that evening because it was being addressed only in speeches given by “unimportant people.” Did anybody else catch that? I smiled when I heard it (or thought I heard it) and wondered if those individuals who had prepared for their big day‐
‐or even their fifteen minutes‐‐would define themselves in the same way. Unimportant people. Hmmm… In today’s Gospel, we are posed the most meaningful question we’ll ever have to an‐
swer. Jesus‐‐this great teacher and clearly a man of God‐‐and his disciples are on the road between towns when he asks them, “Who do people say that I am?” They respond, “John the Baptist; others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” Making it personal, Jesus then counters, “But who do you say that I am?” and Peter answers, “You are the Christ.” With all of his uncertainties (“Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as hu‐
man beings do”) and all of his failures, “Amen, I say to you, this very night before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times”), Peter, by God’s grace, realizes that truly, this is the Mes‐
siah. We must agree that on an “important person” scale of 1 to 10, Jesus is off the charts, but here’s where it gets interesting. In Matthew’s judgment passage when the doomed challenge their fate by arguing they never saw Jesus hungry or thirsty or alone, Christ‐‐the Messiah‐‐responds, “Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.” Yeah. Unimportant/important descriptors can get real murky real fast. I saw a guy sitting outside a local grocery store the other day. He was holding a sign that read, “Help. Hungry.” By common meas‐
ure, he’s way less important than those speechmakers already deemed unimportant at the DNC. Or is he? I don’t have any an‐
swers, only questions. And some of them make me pretty uncom‐

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
