Malaysia Oldest Art Society Celebrating 56 years
Foreword
First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank Dato’ Kho Wee Khian and all members for their support
and trust. Dato’ Kho is the last remaining founder of Penang
Art Society and even though he relinquished his position as
President at the age of 95,he is still driving and dancing. How
remarkable is that? I thank him for his guidance throughout
the years and look forward to his continuing contribution to
this society.
The Penang Art Society is the oldest art society in Malaysia
and it was established not just for artists but for all those who
appreciate all forms of art including, fine art, calligraphy,
poetry, music, photography, bonsai, feng shui and nature
stone so on. The purpose of establishing this society was to
bring art lovers together and to provide them with a platform
with the intention of creating an awareness of art in Malaysia.
When the society was established 57 years ago, Penang was
an important destination for both local and foreign artists.
Famous artists including Chang Dai-chi’en, Xu Baihong, and
Chao Shao-Ang were among those who flocked to the Pearl
of the Orient and helped to play a role in setting up the Society.
Today, the Society has about 300 members and is still growing.
My aim is not only to strengthen the Society’s position and
influence in Malaysian art scene, but also to make the Society a
platform for promoting Malaysian art abroad. The only way to
succeed in this challenge is to echo our Prime Minister, Datuk
Seri Najib’ Tun Razak’s ‘1 Malaysia’ concept. We are all different
in many ways but when it comes to art, we need to understand
that an artist who is selfish and has no ethics will never go far.
Only by branding and promoting Malaysian art and culture
as a whole, can we share our vision with the rest of the world.
I believe this that is the best way for the Malaysian art scene to
move ahead.
I hope this new Penang Art Society magazine will lead by
example to bring the Malaysian art scene to the next level.

I Penang Art Society
The Penang Art Society celebrated its 55th
anniversary in style last year. The purpose of
organizing these art exhibition and dinner were
to bring together artists, collectors, curators,
promoters and art lovers that share the same
ideals and principles to foster better ties to
collectively work together to promote Malaysian
art internationally. The society also marked this
occasion with the publishing of a 160-pages
art catalogue entitled ‘CREATION’ that will be
distributed to selected important galleries and
museum around the world. Showcasing the
works as well as participating artists’ contacts
and information for parties that are interested to
learn more about the artists featured. About 250
guests attended the dinner at the Hydro Majestic
Hotel, Penang . Among the VIPs were Jason Yeap
representing National Gallery Victoria, Australia;
Ong Zhen Min curator of Singapore Art Museum
and Director General National Art Gallery Malaysia
Dr Mohd Najib Ahmad Dawa.
The Penang Art Society is the oldest art society in
Malaysia . This year more than 70 Malaysian senior
and up-coming Malaysian artists are showcasing
their artworks in the Penang State Art Gallery in
Dewan Sri Pinang. It is a record for the society to
have so many participants from all over Malaysia
. The society has been acting as a platform for
artists to display their creativity and to promote
local art in Malaysia. Taking advantage of the
Asian art boom, the society is aiming to not only
promote art locally but also to unite all Malaysian
artists and to expose Malaysian art to the world.

Most of the composition of my paintings is symbolic
of serenity and tranquillity of harmony in nature. It

Even when I was a child, I had been fascinated with
colors and various artworks; although I never thought
that I would eventually walk into an art gallery seeing
my own work on display. This is truly God’s blessing.
I get my inspiration by observing nature and find peace
and joy when I work on my art.

I believe in “Art is reflection of Life”, a saying so old

main characteristics of my works. My favorite media

Calvin
has a deep affinity with ‘morning glories’, flowers quite common in
Malaysia. His sensitive approach to these weather-hardened flower result in works
that brim with texture, color, space, mood and balance. His strokes evidently bring
a tropical touch to his paintings of morning glories.

I love art and traveling. During my traveling trips, I would grab every
opportunity to sketch or even to paint watercolor if time allows.
Something is amiss if I come back from my trip without a single
sketch. The streets capes and old buildings I visited and the local
people I encountered are the most loved subject for my expression
in watercolor.
